Ali Liebert won a Canadian Screen Award for her nuanced portrayal of queer icon Betty McRae on Bomb Girls – but Betty is only part of Ali's story. As a teen, Ali pursued musical theatre dreams and sang “Papa, Can You Hear Me?” at the Pacific National Exhibition. In the years since Betty, Ali has appeared in all manner of indie, big budget, and network projects, from BH90210 to Mech X4 to Ten Days in the Valley to The Devout. She's also expanded into producer and director territory, including Cooking With Love and Spotlight on Christmas and the deeply moving Crazy8s film The Quieting, which stars friend-of-the-podcast Sara Canning in a queer identity story mined from moments in Ali's own life. Sara and fellow friend-of-the-podcast Gabrielle Rose starred in Ali's feature-length directorial debut, Amish Abduction, for which she was recently nominated for a big award from the Directors Guild of Canada. Ali is also an activist, and an advocate for queer youth. In 2019, when Hallmark pulled an ad featuring a gay couple, Ali – who is a star for the network – used her platform to speak out against homophobia in the film and television industry. In the fall finale of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast, Ali discusses her move into the director's chair, how Bomb Girls' Betty McRae changed her life, and her lifelong pursuit of truth. She later reprised that role on the series, at the request of the show’s creator. Additionally, one Phillips’s favorite roles was that of ‘Vera Burr’, the empowered lead on Bomb Girls, both the TV movie and the series, opposite Meg Tilly. Image Copyright: JA Productions. They knocked on doors, phoned voters, and tried to make sense of national stories on a local level while documenting their experience. These personal accounts provided fodder for the new Canadian play The Election, by Natasha Greenblatt and Yolanda Bonnell, in collaboration with the company. In 2019 The Election sparks urgent dialogue just as Canadians take another swing at the ballot box. Exploring the realities of Indigenous, Settler and Newcomer experience with the political process, this play asks: Do we have a voice and does that voice count?Following the wildly successful run of The Public Servant, Common Boots Theatre delivers a provocative and hilarious investigation of how Canadians engage in democracy. The team of six actors (Augusto Bitter, Rachel Cairns, Joelle Peters, Anand Rajaram, Rose Stella, and Courtenay Stevens) take on over 35 characters. Woven throughout the chaos of the federal election are the personal stories of people struggling to make a difference within their own communities and families.www.commonbootstheatre.ca Tickets: https://www.passemuraille.ca/tickets/

ACTRESS - LAUREN ASH Lauren Ash stars as the ever-so convincing Dina, on NBC's new comedy Superstore. Dina is the no nonsense assistant manager you certainly don't ever want to mess with. I still can't believe I am watching her most of the time, and that's because I've known Lauren as the ultimate bestie and birthday wingman of my dear friend Niki, for quite some time now; shout out to the Get Fresh Dog Crew. I became so accustomed to seeing and hearing about Lauren, that you could imagine my surprise when I learned that her natural, comedic sensabitiy and grace wasn't just for nothing. I had no idea. I watch her on Superstore and I am constantly amazed and in awe. Her timing is just so good. The day of our recording was so fun, free and easy. I find that most refreshing; she's just a real, true girl's girl. Her moments that killed me most of all were the ones about life growing up as a teenage "old lady", and of course our teenage sex song exchange. However, those stories I got off the mic though, I wish I could of played those! Lauren Ash is orginally from Toronto, Canada. She started out at The Second City, Toronto and was later invited to perform at the company's main stages in Toronto and Chicago. Last year she killed us as Hortense on the Comedy Central series Another Period, with Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome. Her past roles include ABC's Super Fun Night, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, Lars and the Real Girl, Camille, Scare Tactics, Howie Do It, and countless Canadian series including Lost Girl, Cracked, The Ron James Show, Call Me Fitz, Bomb Girls, Spun Out, and Match Game. She's been nominated for an ACTRA Award (Canada's SAG Awards) and the winner of a Canadian Screen Award (Canada's Emmys) for her performance on "Spun Out." Last year she even threw the first pitch at a Blue Jay's game. WHAAAAT! Superstore airs Mondays at 8pm on NBC and it's also streaming on Hulu. Crystal was a big hit with Kris and Stephanie -- they would have pizza and beer and vent with her anytime. She was a likeable, interesting character in her own right, and our love for Betty McRae, Ali Liebert's character on Bomb Girls, only added to our affection toward Crystal. We discuss the moments that made us like Crystal, some Bomb Girls references you may have missed, and why Crystal needs to come back in season 5. Find shownotes for Half Pint: Crystal — Episode 44 and check out our other podcasts at ASK Genre TV.

Episode 13 of the ‘Schmootz On podcast is part two of my conversation with Ali Liebert and Charlotte Hegele of the award winning WWII drama series, Bomb Girls. In Part 2 of the podcast, Ali and Charlotte expound on the complicated, war-time relationship that is Betty and Kate, what we can expect from their characters in Season 2, the very special soundtrack and Charlotte's role in song, and what we can expect from the two of them in other projects. Enjoy, and then check out Bomb Girls. A catch-up marathon of season one will air in the US on REELZ channel (check your local listings) Wednesday, March 27, starting at 12:00 PM EDT/9:00 AM PDT. Season 2 will premier March 27 with two new shows starting at 8:00 PM EDT/5:00 PM PDT. On Canada's Global TV, Season 2 resumes March 25 at 9:00 PM E/PT
*The conversation with Ali and Charlotte is so informative, that I couldn’t bring myself to edit any more than what I did. Lucky for us all, I have divided the pod into parts 1 and 2. Episode 12 of the ‘Schmootz On podcast is with Ali Liebert and Charlotte Hegele of the award winning drama series, Bomb Girls, about the Canadian women who risked their lives in a munitions factory building bombs for the Allied Forces during WWII. Long before there was Rosie the Riveter, the women of Canada stepped up to serve their country in factories such as the fictional Victory Munitions by providing a crucial workforce. They played their own necessary part in winning the war against the legitimate Axis of evil. War is hell on the home front, too, as the trials of these women reveal deep, personal strengths that push past their inner insecurities. All are running from something both literal and figurative, in that they run into each other, gives this diverse band of sisters an unlikely solidarity in Victory. Ali portrays Betty, the tough-talking girl from the rural prairie with a hard cynical skin honed from years of hiding her personal truths. Closeted in more ways than the obvious, Betty dons her protective battle dress in the form of a barbed, impatient tongue that keeps strangers at a safe distance…until she meets Kate. Kate (Marion), played by Charlotte, is on the run from an abusive, fanatical father that utilizes the evangelical cloth as a ligature to keep his family bound to him and his street ministry. The Canadian selective service and the associated work in the bomb factory provide a timely escape from a life of violence and persecution. Through Betty, she finds her champion, and through her singing, her voice. Ali and Charlotte (Ali calls her Charlie, which is so damn cute) were gracious enough to speak with me about their characters, what we can expect from season two, and about what is so special about Bomb Girls as a whole. Enjoy, and then check out Bomb Girls. A catch-up marathon of season one will air on REELZ channel (check your local listings) Wednesday, March 27, starting at 12:00 PM EDT/9:00 AM PDT.
