They look at all of the odds stacked against Firefly by the Fox Network, and how so many of those marketing woes made the show catnip for fandom. Plus, the Jossification of scifi in the 2000s, silliness about Nathan Fillion and Jewel Staite, and why Firefly (gulp) might not hold up in 2023. Are you a Firefly fan? Three days ago, I literally jumped with joy ... but I'll get to why in a moment. First, I want to talk about Iron Man. In 2008, Jon Favreau's superhero-spy movie exploded into cinemas and lit the fuse on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How? With the exception of Sam Rami's Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 – the superhero genre had been patchy at best. But Favreau represented a different approach. He wasn't just a director for hire. He was a fan. He worked for Marvel, not just for some studio who'd optioned the character rights. He consulted legendary comic book writers. He created inside jokes and Easter eggs. He polled comic book fans on who should play Pepper Potts. (Full disclosure. I voted for Jewel Staite from Firefly ... who would have KILLED it.) The insight is ... actually ... this leads back to me jumping for joy three days ago. I was playing Cyberpunk 2077 on the Playstation, fighting a rogue AI. (Yes. Just an ordinary Wednesday.) And then it spoke ... with the voice of an angel. Actually, it wasn't an angel, it was sing-song voice of GLaDOS ... the psychopathic and hilarious antagonist from Portal (2007) and Portal 2 (2011) talking about cake. A moment of pure surprise, recognition and joy. Perhaps, this means nothing to you. That's fine. Focus on the lesson beneath. Because the creators of Cyberpunk 2077 share the (obvious) secret of great storytelling with Jon Favreau. They KNOW and CARE about their audience. Deeply. Nick ---- Notes: I'm playing the patched PS5 game ... which doesn't suck ... so I'm giving CD Projekt Red a little latitude on the whole 'caring' thing. The point stands. This is Business Storytelling essay 9/30. Please SHARE this this follow me to get the whole series. ------------------- The Stories Mean Business podcast with Nick Warren. One Idea A Day, Every Day. Well this episode bummed us out. Produced and pseudo-researched by Kristen Riley. Produced and edited by Daive Reed.   Follow on Twitter @CastFiles Email us at TheeCastFiles@gmail.com https://www.teepublic.com/user/the-cast-files Music by Hal Six  Logo by @OokaArt   SHOW NOTES: Since this one was a bummer I wanted to reiterate my favorite anecdote, told by Jewel Staite about her co-star Michael Chieffo, who played her kidnapper and torturer in the episode.: "I do remember the man, Michael [Chieffo], who played my kidnapper was so lovely and so concerned that I would feel scared of him, I guess, or uncomfortable around him that he made an effort to be very sweet and warm with me, which my mom appreciated. I think my mom thought [it] was really classy of him." That was really nice, because this episode heavily played on an actual crime in which the girl did not survive. Polly Klaas was 12 when she was abducted and killed, her killer remains on death row today. Because of the similarities Fox's standards and practices was "uncomfortable" with the original screenplay because Amy Jacobs (Jewel Staite) was supposed to be 12 years old. The network decided it would be better if Amy was in her midteens so the production aged up her character to be 15. The actor, Staite, was 13 when she played the part.  Oh! And on the Spotify playlist this week, the one Daive is always adding to, I made a suggestion. Since this episode everyone is searching for Amy, I went with If U Seek Amy by Britney Spears. All my peers, you're welcome.    Xx Kristen

Jewel Staite is the actress behind a veritable parade of dynamic characters, including the volatile and feisty Abigail on Family Law, the kind-hearted mechanic Kaylee on Firefly and Serenity, the brilliant and insecure Dr. Jennifer Keller on Stargate Atlantis, and a pair of sadistic magical twins on The Order. She's also an entrepreneur, a mother, a wife, a friend, a fan favourite, and really funny. Her Twitter followers know that she doesn't suffer trolls: she'll call out the insanity of the unrealistic beauty expectations placed on women, and the absurdity that people expect her to look exactly the same as she did when she was on Firefly, a series that premiered in September 2002. In this expansive and riveting episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast, Jewel Staite reflects on the characters she's played and loved over the course of her career, as well as self-care during COVID, navigating social media, what Nathan Fillion taught her about being number one on the call sheet, and what goes on in the Firefly group chat. BriouxTV: The Podcast

Jewel Staite was five-years-old when an agent stopped her and her mom walking through a mall. Did the girl want to be in a TV commercial, the agent asked? Staite had no interest until her mom suggested that if she did it, she'd buy her some new outfits with the money. And she's been working in TV and films ever since.Mainly, she's been doing sci-fi shows that became cult favourites with fans, including Firefly with fellow Canadian Nathan Fillion, the spinoff feature "Serenity," and Stargate Atlantis. Since then, she's starred in The LA Complex, had a recurring role opposite Joel Kinnaman on The Killing and starred in the feature, "How to Have an Orgy in a Small Town."Her latest project is Family Law.  Global's new Friday night drama is set and shot in Vancouver and stars Staite as Abigail Bianchi, a once promising lawyer who hits rock bottom after another booze binge until only one firm is willing to take a chance on her -- her father's. He's played by Victor Garber, and the two and the rest of the cast have already completed work on the series' first two seasons.Staite also shares what she's watching now, sings a bit of her all-time favourite TV theme song and answers whether or not she'd encourage her own five-year-old to get into the biz.

We enter Family Law by way of Abigail “Abby” Bianchi, played by Jewel. Abby is a whip-smart lawyer, mother, wife, and recovering alcoholic. She's spent her life blaming others, especially her estranged father, for her myriad of problems. But a very public humiliation off the top of the series almost gets her disbarred, and the only firm willing to hire her is the one owned by her smart, shrewd, handsome, charming and still very much estranged father Harry, and staffed by Daniel and Lucy, his two other children from two other relationships. Family Law is the only dramatic series from a Canadian national broadcaster to film in Vancouver. It's a big deal for the local screen scene, and warrants a big deal of an episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast: one that begins with an in-depth conversation with Family Law showrunner Susin Nielsen, and concludes with a chat with Jewel Staite and Victor Garber, the entertainment icons who portray the dysfunctional daughter and dad duo of Abby and Harry. On this week’s episode of Not A Bomb, TV has invaded the podcast as Troy, Brad, and John tackle 2005’s Serenity. The film acts as the conclusion to the short-lived 2002 Fox television series, Firefly, which was cancelled during its first and only season. Serenity and Firefly were created by Joss Whedon of Buffy and Angel fame (possibly, two of the greatest shows of all time according to one host). Despite the high anticipation from the Firefly fans, Serenity was not too “shiny” at the box office and performed poorly. The film did, however, garner favorable reviews and still lives on as a cult favorite. The gang kicks off the show talking about their favorite television shows and then takes a look back at Joss Whedon’s career. They also examine why this beloved movie failed to attract more fans. There is a lot of talk about Serenity’s theme song which might be one of the worst things in music history. Ever. Seriously, it’s that terrible. Serenity is directed by Joss Whedon and star Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau, Chiwetel Ejofor, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, and Morena Baccarin. If you want to leave feedback or suggest a movie bomb, please drop us a line at NotABombPod@gmail.com. Mark talks about the space Western premise of the show and the film, both created by writer and director Joss Whedon, and he also talks about the amazing, compelling, and diverse crew of characters of the Firefly-class spaceship "Serenity" and the actors who played them, including: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Ron Glass. Both "Firefly" and "Serenity" have been highly regarded by Mark since he saw them, as well their characters, and he explains why to him and to others like him both the TV series and its motion picture sequel are considered to special in many ways and will continue to be counted among some of the best that television and cinema has to offer. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

Raze the land and boil the sea; you can't take this week's podcast from... us? What is it about this _Joss Whedon_ franchise that has survived cancellation and a lack of conclusion? Why is it that so many are such adamant fans of this short-lived series? This week, we're talking about fans of Firefly, the aptly-named _Browncoats_! Next week, we'll be tackling our final topic of the season: Disney fans (and its a doozy)! ## Episode outline ### [Last Episode's](http://fanthropological.com/e/34-james-bond-fans/) Famous Last Words **Tom:** Why do people care about this show? I guess Nathan Fillion is cool... Why do you care so much about it? Get over it! **Z:** What is the place of duelling in the world of firefly? How common is it? **G:** Is it really that good? **T:** Where's the second season? Why hasn't it been kickstarted? ### Fandom Facts **Origins:** > "Firefly" is a space Western set 500 years in the future, in the aftermath of a civil war between rebels known as Independents (or Browncoats) and a tyrannical conglomerate called the Alliance. The Independents lose the war, and under Alliance control, corporations rule openly; > > — [SFGate - When Fox canceled 'Firefly,' it ignited an Internet fan base whose burning desire for more led to 'Serenity'](http://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/When-Fox-canceled-Firefly-it-ignited-an-2628890.php) Firefly was a Sci-fi Western show broadcast in 2002. Created by Joss Whedon, only 11 of the 14 recorded episodes were aired in its original US run on the FOX network before the show was cancelled. Due to DVD sales, the show was deemed successful enough to have a movie produced, _Serenity_. It stars several fan favourite actors such as Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and the late Ron Glass. **Names:** Browncoats, ["dubbed ... in honor of the doomed-but-noble Independents"](http://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/When-Fox-canceled-Firefly-it-ignited-an-2628890.php) in the show. **Most Active:** Firefly fandom was most active around [October of 2005](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F014v3t,%2Fm%2F02j9_2), which is just after the release of the movie, _Serenity_. Otherwise, interest in the show has been on a very slow decline with about half as much interest now as five years ago. **Size of Fandom:** We would estimate the size of the fandom as more than 200 000 people; After the show's cancellation, FOX released a DVD set of the show which sold more than 200 000 copies — enough to get the movie greenlit. **Fan activity:** Mostly shipping characters, as in other fandoms. During the early 2000's, "Shindigs" (informal gatherings) were popular. **Fanfics:** Archive of our own has over 5600, and Fanfiction.net has over 7200. ### Are you in, or out? **T is in.** **Z is out.** **G is out.** ### This week's spotlight **[Can't Stop the Serenity](http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/)** Can't Stop the Serenity is a group that organizes screenings of Serenity for charity, usually [Equality Now](https://www.equalitynow.org/), an organization working for equality for women and girls. Since 2006, they have raised over $1 mil USD, and it is entirely run by volunteers! > We share the ideal that people should “aim to misbehave,” if it absolutely means doing the right thing. We hold true that anyone can make a difference, and no effort is insignificant. Further we believe that a government shouldn't destroy the rights of its citizens, regardless of sex. Basically, we watch our shows, support our causes and allow our voices to be heard because we live in countries which allow us to do so. But we realise that there are other people out there who can not do what we can do. > > — [Can't Stop the Serenity](http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/) **[The Race Against Time](http://raceagainsttime.

Agent Stargate Pioneer unboxes his personal Guardians Of The Galaxy Crate showing off all the great stuff that the giveaway winner will receive. For your change to enter and to help with the war against Stark’s “special” flamingo, enter into the contest and let us know what the next animal that Howard Stark is going to add to his collection, the animal’s name, and the backstory and personality of the animal. Is the animal a superhero or villain? We’ll need to have your entry in before 8:00 PM Eastern on February 24th, 2016. Bonus Points for starting a Twitter account for the animal and to start a Twitter war with @BernardSt4rk.   GONNAGEEK CONVENTION APPEARANCES 2016 [06:53]   - Haley At Gallifrey One - Upcoming C2E2 GonnaGeek podcasting panel March 18th, 2016   AGENT CARTER “The Atomic Job” [09:44]   ABC’s Agent Carter second season reaches the half-way point with a heist episode sure to be full with zany physical comedy, one liners and relationship mash-ups. In an overall fun episode “Team Carter” emerges as “The Wrong Stuff” but still gets the job done while bringing everyone home from the mission. As Jason Wilkes continues to have phasing issues the Carter-Wilkes pair gets to share a brief physical moment. However, it is still unknown what exactly Whitney Frost and Jason Wilke’s Zero Matter built-in detectors mean or just what exactly is on the other side of the Zero Matter that has Jason so concerned. The funny meter was peaking throughout the episode as Hayley Atwell and Ray Wise played Men-In-Black Flashy-Thingy, Jarvis attempts to bake a nuclear bomb core like a soufflé, Agent Rose gets her first taste of very successful field action and Dr. Samberly gets a chance to contribute and perhaps start a budding new SSR office romance. The Agents discuss what is up with Howard Stark’s portrait and comment on almost losing the start of the show to puncturing re-bar.   "The Atomic Job”   Directed By:  Craig Zisk http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0957197/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1   Written By: Lindsey Allen http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2640743/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1#writer   Episode Transcripts: http://transcripts.foreverdreaming.org/viewforum.php?f=140   JESSICA JONES “A.K.A. 99 Friends” [24:54]   The Jessica Jones series starts to take off with “The Sandwich Saved Me” and the Legends Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents Lauren and Stargate Pioneer geek out about it. The episode theme of heroes arising was seen in Jessica, Trish, and Will. Trish brings out the Jewel costume in a very funny scene. We see Trish, Jessica and Malcolm in the days leading up to Kilgrave coming into their lives for the first time including the actual meeting between Jessica and Kilgrave. The Agents give their take on why Malcolm turned to drug abuse. Will and Trish have a very special Marvel first on the screen, and Will helps plan the Kilgrave extraction – he is here to help, albeit somewhat misguided, but still here to help. And Hope’s scene is a reminder with abuse that you simply cannot save everyone, no matter how hard you try.   "A.K.A. (not in context of Jewel Staite of course) - THAT was surprising, that their plan more or less worked out, still I have a BAD feeling about this! - tracker...of course Kilgrave had a backup plan - David Tennant really has the "positive crazy" like the Doctor as well as the "negative crazy" as Kilgrave down - was expecting that Hogarth was the one who set up the surveillance team which rescued Kilgrave   Bottom line: 9 out of 10 delicious banana breads   Outro [60:41]   Haley, Lauren and Stargate Pioneer love to hear back from you about your top 5 Marvel character lists, your science of Marvel questions, who would you pick in an all-female Avenger team, or who’s Marvel abs you would like to see. If Kevin and Kornflake sound exhausted, you can blame Boston Comic Con, which was huge and crazy and perhaps a bit overcrowded and WOULD ALL YOU MANIACS JUST GET OUT OF OUR WAY?!? Thank you. Wandering the convention, we encountered Space Chickens, Tiki Zombies, Press Your Luck Whammies, Amy the Mermaid, Jewel Staite's finger, Sergio Aragones' mustache, and 50,000 people in Doctor Who costumes. And you'll hear a couple of quick interviews with a new friend (Nashville's Superman, Allen Shervelle) and an old friend (Adventure Time artist Andy Ristaino, who has a great "Weird Al" Yankovic story). Also: National Radio Day is this week -- so you had better do as you are told.
