Let's talk about HOW we're talking about Diddy. Though Sean "Diddy" Combs is in jail on a variety of SA allegations, a lot of social media content has reduced his alleged behavior to "being freaky" - raising a larger conversation about society's understanding of SA, consent and it's complicated relationship with consensual sex. Our resident kink enthusiast, Queen breaks down how sex and kinks get harmfully conflated with acts of violence and SA, while J. gets in their Black church kid Telfar about the influence of cultural Christianity, domination & control on community concepts of sex and deviance. Also the kink spectrum, group sex, the closet queer to r*pist pipeline (that's not a thing), queerness and possibility, and more. Dr. Olsen was that kid who witnessed to his elementary teachers and still got A's. In college, he poked theological holes in his Cedarville classmates' theologies and was still popular. But ultimately, his quest for knowledge and truth caused him to deconstruct his fundamentalist faith and fully accept his identity as a queer man. Despite emerging from Cedarville with mostly fond memories, Dr. Olsen recognized that the evangelical culture's toxic views of queerness made many students, faculty, and staff suffer greatly, with some losing their friends and family, and some even taking their own lives. With that in mind, Dr. Olsen started a group called Cedarville Out to give support to LGBTQ+ people at Cedarville, and decades later, he is still helping people find their way. There's nothing more important, as a human being, than having the rights to live life on your terms - provided it doesn't intentionally hurt someone else. From body autonomy, to loving who you love, and worshipping the way you choose to worship. Everyone deserves these rights. Yet, in the politically charged environment - not only in the U.S., but across the globe - the war against personal human rights is on. Helping me unwrap this fight in a big way, is my friend Alex Jamieson. Artist, activist, author, filmmaker, and overall beautiful human being. She's making her voice known through her Instagram videos, by calling out the hypocrisy that is the GOP hatred towards women, LGBTQ individuals, and anyone who doesn't fit into their box of how you should live your life based on their definition of living an"uncloseted" - so to speak, in their world. In this episode you'll... Discover Alex's amazing art in her Abortion Trading Cards and Facist Tarot Cards Unlock ways for standing firm in your resolve to be you regardless of what others think Learn ways to have a voice in this U.S. election to make a difference. About Alex Alexandra Jamieson audaciously spends much of her waking life making art despite not having any art school debt. A third-generation self-taught artist from Portland, OR, she gets her studio dirty in Brooklyn, NYC. In her other work, she has published five books on food, communication, and personal growth, and was the co-creator and co-star of the Oscar nominated documentary Super Size Me. Her latest art includes the Abortion Trading Cards and the Fascism Tarot Deck, both fundraisers for abortion access groups and pro-democracy work. She creates commissions for private clients around the world and has been featured as a writer and coach in Oprah Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Good Morning America, CNN, USA Today, and more. Life is full of choices. Some easy, and some not so easy, right? Coming out, changing jobs, finding that just right soulmate. All of these decisions come with choices. Ironically, we put  a lot of emphasis on making the right choice, and too often try to find the easy choice simultaneously. Yay, who doesn't want the easiest way when given the chance. But, what if the easiest choice isn't always the right choice. That's what we're uncovering today. In this episode you'll... Discover how easy peasy may not be the best way to make decisions Unlock the fears that come with having to make the right, right, right choice Explore a comfortable way to be at peace with difficult choices About Rick Rick is a life and business coach, speaker, author, and podcaster. With his husband by his side and two grown children, life looks dramatically different than it did more than 20 years ago. “I started living by my expectations rather than others, and gained the confidence to love me. “Instead of seeking out hidden sexual experiences and lying about who I was, I found love with a man who embraced me and my kids. “Of course, none of this was easy. I wouldn't bullshit you. That's not my style.” In addition to speaking from stages around the country, today Rick helps men who are struggling with their sexuality to learn to be themselves, to stop making excuses, face their fears, and commit to living an unapologetic life. “The truth of who you are is far more powerful than the false truth you are pretending to be, so let's work together to show the world WHO YOU ARE!” Ready to explore coaching? Medaya Ocher and Eric Newman speak with author Patrick Nathan about his latest novel, and this month's LARB Book Club pick, The Future Was Color. The novel chronicles the life of Hungarian immigrant writer George Curtis. When we meet George, he's writing the hacky sort of monster movies that are today's cult classics, trying to find sex and love amid the closeted ambiance of life between the wars and in the midst of the McCarthyite purges of communists and homosexuals that plagued the mid-century film industry. As George demurs writing the studio's next big hit to create something of greater substance about Hungary and the war from his exile perspective, he follows a passionate affair with his coworker in the writers' room. But when he departs the studio office for a residency of sorts with a Malibu actress and her gay husband, a dramatic chain reaction brings new motivations and possibilities to light. A novel about a moment in time that is also in so many ways timeless, The Future Was Color is an exploration of the line between the personal and political, between safety and risk, the art we create and the art that creates us. Also, Claire Messud, author of This Strange Eventful History, returns to recommend Susie Boyt's novel, Loved and Missed.

“The Courtship of Bess Richards” (October 4, 1986) The second episode of Amen concerns Sherman Hemsley's Ernie trying to land his choir a new singer in Nell Carter's Bess, and the result is a comedy of errors in which both he and she perform romantic interest that neither is capable of actually feeling. The result is a WWF-style wrestling match between these two iconic sitcom stars, and we're joined once again by Dr. Alfred L. Martin to discuss how this is rendered all the stranger because Hemsley and Carter both were closeted and therefore all too accustomed to acting out hetero identities different from how they lived privately.  This episode mentions a TV Guide article about Sherman Hemsley's private life that I now cannot find online. Matthew recounts his first relationships in the closet while attending SPU, a Christian University in Seattle.Over the years, you may have seen Seattle Pacific University mentioned in news publications for its discriminatory policies. Namely, refusing an adjunct professor a full-time position by citing his sexuality in 2021. In this episode we explore the homoerotic nature of hyper-religious academic institutions, and the impact their policies have on students.Stories cited from: https://www.thestranger.com/features/2011/03/30/7435772/the-secret-sex-lives-of-spu-students**Make sure to rate our podcast and leave us a review, it really helps us out in reaching the right people! After building a successful career and family, you've come to realize you'd rather spend your remaining days in the company of men half your age rather than with your wife of 25 years. Now that it's time to retire, should you stay tepidly wed or chase all the young dudes, instead? We'll explore this and more here on Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: After building a successful career and family, you've come to realize you'd rather spend your remaining days in the company of men half your age rather than with your wife of 25 years. Now that it's time to retire, should you stay tepidly wed or chase all the young dudes, instead? Every time you land a career, some global economic catastrophe seems to send you in search of a new one. How can you future-proof yourself against financial displacement if your next chosen field once again goes kaput? How can you resolve a pet custody dispute with an unreasonable ex when your state doesn't have laws to definitively settle such matters? Since being preemptively stigmatized as a potential child molester by your brother-in-law's vindictive ex-wife, you've gone from being an uncle who takes the kids to the zoo and plays board games to the man who leaves the room when your niece enters. How do you handle this situation without punishing your daughter and niece — or running the risk of being baselessly accused of the unthinkable? You've discovered that your neighbors can hear your Zoom therapy sessions through the paper-thin wall between apartments. Should you talk to them about it? Have any questions, comments, or stories you'd like to share with us? Drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com!
