Statius finally tells Virgil what we all want to know: the story of his conversion. How did this Latin poet who dedicated his great epic to a Roman emperor become a Christian.Through a long process and by subterfuge. Statius was a closeted or hidden (or to use the medieval Florentine term, "closed") Christian.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we look through this passage in which Dante the poet attempts to justify putting this pagan Roman poet in Purgatory and on his way to Paradise. If you'd like to help out with the costs of this podcast, please consider a one-time donation or a small monthly stipend, using this PayPal link right here. Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:20] My English translation of the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto XXII, lines 76 - 93. And was Dante the poet rethinking his position toward the neutrals in INFERNO?[08:08] Statius' journey in the afterlife to the fourth circle of Mount Purgatory . . . and where else?[08:40] Statius' improvised backstory and the inclusion of a historical figure: Emperor Domitian.[13:13] Dante's concept of conversion (v. modern conceptions).[16:36] Statius' words and the problem of the "above" text.[20:01] Texts in texts and the inevitable overlay of irony.[24:50] Rereading the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto XXII, lines 76 - 93.

In the early morning of July 8th, 2022 20 year-old Jimmie Jay Lee dressed only in his bathrobe, a gold bonnet, and house shoes left his student apartment in Oxford, Mississippi. Private messages would eventually lead investigators to his alleged killer Timothy Herrington Jr., a college grad from a longtime "church family".

You've probably heard Caleb Martin's music somewhere on TV. I met Caleb in our music community through Shin Kawasaki, whose music you hear every week on Chapel Probation. But I had no idea Caleb had an evangelical background until just the past couple of years when we started chatting on IG about religious trauma. And I'm glad we did chat because it gave me the perfect excuse to talk to him, someone I've admired for the past 10 years or so. The admiration I have for such a fine musician and composer is still there, but now I also admire Caleb for his courage to come out of high control religion and forge a life of music and community outside. Let's talk about HOW we're talking about Diddy. Though Sean "Diddy" Combs is in jail on a variety of SA allegations, a lot of social media content has reduced his alleged behavior to "being freaky" - raising a larger conversation about society's understanding of SA, consent and it's complicated relationship with consensual sex. Our resident kink enthusiast, Queen breaks down how sex and kinks get harmfully conflated with acts of violence and SA, while J. gets in their Black church kid Telfar about the influence of cultural Christianity, domination & control on community concepts of sex and deviance. Dr. Olsen was that kid who witnessed to his elementary teachers and still got A's. In college, he poked theological holes in his Cedarville classmates' theologies and was still popular. But ultimately, his quest for knowledge and truth caused him to deconstruct his fundamentalist faith and fully accept his identity as a queer man. Despite emerging from Cedarville with mostly fond memories, Dr. Olsen recognized that the evangelical culture's toxic views of queerness made many students, faculty, and staff suffer greatly, with some losing their friends and family, and some even taking their own lives. With that in mind, Dr. Olsen started a group called Cedarville Out to give support to LGBTQ+ people at Cedarville, and decades later, he is still helping people find their way. There's nothing more important, as a human being, than having the rights to live life on your terms - provided it doesn't intentionally hurt someone else. From body autonomy, to loving who you love, and worshipping the way you choose to worship. Everyone deserves these rights. Yet, in the politically charged environment - not only in the U.S., but across the globe - the war against personal human rights is on. Helping me unwrap this fight in a big way, is my friend Alex Jamieson. Artist, activist, author, filmmaker, and overall beautiful human being. She's making her voice known through her Instagram videos, by calling out the hypocrisy that is the GOP hatred towards women, LGBTQ individuals, and anyone who doesn't fit into their box of how you should live your life based on their definition of living an"uncloseted" - so to speak, in their world. In this episode you'll... Discover Alex's amazing art in her Abortion Trading Cards and Facist Tarot Cards Unlock ways for standing firm in your resolve to be you regardless of what others think Learn ways to have a voice in this U.S. election to make a difference. About Alex Alexandra Jamieson audaciously spends much of her waking life making art despite not having any art school debt. A third-generation self-taught artist from Portland, OR, she gets her studio dirty in Brooklyn, NYC. In her other work, she has published five books on food, communication, and personal growth, and was the co-creator and co-star of the Oscar nominated documentary Super Size Me. Her latest art includes the Abortion Trading Cards and the Fascism Tarot Deck, both fundraisers for abortion access groups and pro-democracy work. She creates commissions for private clients around the world and has been featured as a writer and coach in Oprah Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Good Morning America, CNN, USA Today, and more. Life is full of choices. Some easy, and some not so easy, right? Coming out, changing jobs, finding that just right soulmate. All of these decisions come with choices. But, what if the easiest choice isn't always the right choice. That's what we're uncovering today. In this episode you'll... With his husband by his side and two grown children, life looks dramatically different than it did more than 20 years ago. “I started living by my expectations rather than others, and gained the confidence to love me. “Instead of seeking out hidden sexual experiences and lying about who I was, I found love with a man who embraced me and my kids. “Of course, none of this was easy. I wouldn't bullshit you. That's not my style.” In addition to speaking from stages around the country, today Rick helps men who are struggling with their sexuality to learn to be themselves, to stop making excuses, face their fears, and commit to living an unapologetic life. “The truth of who you are is far more powerful than the false truth you are pretending to be, so let's work together to show the world WHO YOU ARE!” Ready to explore coaching? We kick of the series exploring desire and freedom. In this episode you'll Learn how to get real with your desires Awaken to the vision of what true freedom means for you outside your life's closets Unlock the doorway to living by your desires, not your needs About Rick Rick is a life and business coach, speaker, author, and podcaster. My goal is to support you in kicking ass and moving from, "Crap I'm stuck in this rut of life," to "Damn, I'm a badass gay/bi guy living a life the turns me on!" I'm a straight-forward, no BS kind of coach that challenges you to stop jerking yourself off, cut the lip service, and get in action - no excuses, no fears, no apologies. If you're ready to explore, invest a bit of time and a little bit of money in yourself and scheduled a "Your Next Move" coaching session today. Click here to schedule.

Medaya Ocher and Eric Newman speak with author Patrick Nathan about his latest novel, and this month's LARB Book Club pick, The Future Was Color. The novel chronicles the life of Hungarian immigrant writer George Curtis. When we meet George, he's writing the hacky sort of monster movies that are today's cult classics, trying to find sex and love amid the closeted ambiance of life between the wars and in the midst of the McCarthyite purges of communists and homosexuals that plagued the mid-century film industry. As George demurs writing the studio's next big hit to create something of greater substance about Hungary and the war from his exile perspective, he follows a passionate affair with his coworker in the writers' room. But when he departs the studio office for a residency of sorts with a Malibu actress and her gay husband, a dramatic chain reaction brings new motivations and possibilities to light. A novel about a moment in time that is also in so many ways timeless, The Future Was Color is an exploration of the line between the personal and political, between safety and risk, the art we create and the art that creates us. Also, Claire Messud, author of This Strange Eventful History, returns to recommend Susie Boyt's novel, Loved and Missed.

Today I want to introduce you to an absolutely gorgeous soul who I can only describe as ‘exquisite.' I was so moved by this guest's heart, and she literally is walking love.  Sophia Spallino is a dynamic feminine, lesbian business coach, and inter-spiritual advocate. She helps powerful women build profitable brands as a social media strategist, personal brand coach and content creator, but there is so much more to her story that she reveals in this beautiful conversation. In this potent episode, you'll hear:  Sophia's story of growing up, discovering her sexuality and building her own business from the ground up [9:41] The wisdom she has gained and thoughts on staying true to your word and having the courage to be yourself, without putting yourself in a box [17:42] How Sophia was able to embody inside of herself and live into the truth of her oneness with Jesus [25:29] A look at her morning routine and the three containers she prioritizes her day [35:10] What Sophia says should be the non-negotiables that you need to be doing on social media as a business right now [37:46] Her expert advice for women who want to work on gaining a bigger presence on social media [42:53] Sophia not only overcame personal and professional challenges, in the process she embraced her true identity, and she now empowers others to live authentically. I'm honoured that Sophia joined me on the podcast to share her insights on faith, resilience, and the power of self-expression, and I invite you to move into this interview with such an open heart and allow yourself to receive what's here for you.  Did something Sophia say inspire you to live more authentically, and not inside of a box as well? “The Courtship of Bess Richards” (October 4, 1986) The second episode of Amen concerns Sherman Hemsley's Ernie trying to land his choir a new singer in Nell Carter's Bess, and the result is a comedy of errors in which both he and she perform romantic interest that neither is capable of actually feeling. The result is a WWF-style wrestling match between these two iconic sitcom stars, and we're joined once again by Dr. Alfred L. Martin to discuss how this is rendered all the stranger because Hemsley and Carter both were closeted and therefore all too accustomed to acting out hetero identities different from how they lived privately.  This episode mentions a TV Guide article about Sherman Hemsley's private life that I now cannot find online. However, I bought the issue on eBay and will post as soon as it arrives. You can see Zach Wilson's posting of it on Twitter. Thanks, Zach! Buy Dr. Alfred's book, The Generic Closet: Black Gayness and the Black-Cast Sitcom. Listen to Hemsley in the performance of Purlie that Alfred mentions. Watch a clip of Hemsley's gay villain turn in 2000's Screwed.  Listen to Dr. Alfred's previous episodes: Roc Has a Gay Uncle Moesha Meets a Gay Guy Sanford Arms Meets a Gay — And He's Black!
