Mayor elect Zohran Mamdani has announced his transition team, WFUV's Nora Malone has more on their experience. The White House has agreed to partially fund SNAP benefits as the government shutdown continues. But it could still take months for people to start receiving the aid. One community organization in the Bronx has seen longer lines at their food distribution drives. WFUV's Xenia Gonikberg explains how they are trying to fill in the gap. WFUV's Livia Regina shares some of Karly Hartzman's, from the band Wednesday, interview with the station. Plus, a surprise drop from Katie and Allison Crutchfield and a non-profit initiative launched by Chappell Roan. The Best of the Month episode is normally Patreon-only. We are making this one fully public. This month's best of the month guest is Nialler9 Podcast regular Louise Bruton. We discuss the album of the month with the most chatter around it - Lily Allen's new direct diaristic divorce album West End Girl, along with records from Irish music scene stalwart Maykay with her long awaited debut solo album, the new sixth album from Florence + The Machine, Katie & Allison Crutchfield's Snocaps record, the supernaturally-inspired Old Earth from Dublin producer Rory Sweeney and friends, the Philadelphia shoegaze band They Are Gutting A Body Of Water and the new PinkPantheress remix album. Along with spotlights for previous guest Ailbhe Reddy and short king hater Alex Cameron. Plus some TV, film and books we've enjoyed. Thank you to our Co-producer patron Kevin Wetter for selecting this week's topic! This 1994 indie rock album means a lot to its fans as proof positive that you can survive a romantic breakup. We look at the small business that drove its creation and try to put ourselves in the shoes of the listeners who cherish it. Interested in the media we discussed this episode? With Robin Hilton out for one more week, NPR Music's Ann Powers and Lars Gotrich join Stephen Thompson for a whirlwind tour of a busy release day. We've got the first album in five years by the spiky pop-rock band Swearin' (featuring the great and good Allison Crutchfield); the gorgeous first album in six years by Chan Marshall, a.k.a. Cat Power; the heavy, almost absurdly ambitious rock and roll of F***** Up; the versatile country of Eric Church; the springy and inspirational anthems of multi-hyphenate powerhouse Tunde Olaniran; the sprawling, deeply searching rock of mewithoutYou; the rugged metal of Matt Pike's long-running band High on Fire; and Phosporescent's Matthew Houck, whose beatific folk-rock sprawls with winsome approachability.
On today's episode I talk to musician Allison Crutchfield. Originally from Birmingham, AL, Allison first started playing music with her sister Katie in the bands The Ackleys and then later P.S. Eliot. Eventually, the two felt the need to work on their own personal musical projects. Katie created Waxahatchee and Allison co-founded the wonderful indie rock band Swearin'. Allison has also recorded a self-released solo EP Lean In To It and her debut full-length Tourist in this Town was released on Merge last year. Recently, Allison's been part of the Waxahatchee live band, and Swearin's new album Fall into the Sun will be released by Merge in October. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

In this first episode of the Jukebox Graduate, Dave and Eugene discuss how music has been a guiding light in their lives, how they met, the first moment that they caught the bug, how they consume music, what they can still learn from great records, the losses of 2016, the unknowable legacy of rock and roll, and the relevance of outtakes. After listening to a new Chuck Prophet song they discuss recent releases from Ryan Adams, Joseph, LP, Bash & Pop, Porcelain Raft, Allison Crutchfield, John Mayer, Ron Gallo, Strand of Oaks, Dawes, Sturgil Simpson and Ty Segall. They close out with a song from Wesley Stace backed by the Jayhawks. Somehow in the midst of all of that we hear a little bit of Russell Scott & His Red Hots, Jason Isbell, David Bowie, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and the Band. This episode of the Jukebox Graduate was brought to you by Satellite Amplifiers with thanks to Yep Roc Records and Redeye Worldwide. www.thejukeboxgraduate.com
Once you get past the intrigue of her backstory (PS Eliot drummer with her now Waxahatchee-fronting sister Katie, collaborator with her ex in the apostrophe sporting band Swearin'), Allison Crutchfield -- freshly minted solo artist -- weaves a tangled-by-way-of-intriguing tale on her first full length LP, 'Tourist In This Town.' She may be angsty, but she isn't without something relevant to impart, and what's with so much interesting music coming out of Philly these days? Join us as we break it down (just the one time). Grab Tourist In This Town on Amazon A Few Minutes With "Fish Heads" by Barnes & Barnes; a strange song with an even stranger art film/video directed by and staring the late Bill Paxton. A Current Affair Grandaddy's "Last Place", their first output in 11 years, includes Evermore. The video is chock-full of the stuff of psychological group studies. Have an album you want us to cover? Will, Anurag and Barrett discuss new music by Allison Crutchfield, Moon Duo, Priests, and Fred Thomas, plus a death of the week.
Hey, everyone, it's the 47th episode of Pint Notes. That's right. Pint Notes. After two years, we're changing the official name to match our social media handles. It's kind of like when Josh was 8 and decided he didn't want people to call him Joshua anymore, only Josh. It's the same seedy basement bar, the same Joshua Wodarz and Rebecca Ruiz. As always different music - this week they look at The xx, Allison Crutchfield, and Ron Gallo. Oh, and a new logo by the talented Zoe Wodarz.
Allison Crutchfield (twin sister of Katie Crutchfield aka Waxahatchee) has paid her dues in bands like P.S. Eliot, Bad Bananna, and Swearin', but on her new LP Tourist In This Town (Merge Records) she's blasting off into a whole new phase of her career. Lousy with emotionally supercharged synth jams, Tourist reveals Crutchfield as one of the most vibrant voices of her generation, so of course, we're gonna talk about.PLUS! Sampha's Process drops in a few weeks. We've got a taste of this masterful R&B excursion. This week's Side B is just a whole lot of goddamn Swearin'! I got to meet up with them (Allison Crutchfield, Kyle Gilbride, returning champion Jeff Bolt, and, although he decided not to join the interview, Keith Spencer) when they came to Vancouver a week or two ago now, and we hung out for a while at the Biltmore before they went on. We talked about how they all met and got started playing music, Bay Area burritos, annoying questions, Batman, and more! Bonus--their full live set (minus the first song they played, unfortunately) is up right after the interview! // As always, tap Now Playing on your iThing for more info., and use the Next/Prev. buttons to flip around.// surfingstrange.com// swearin.bandcamp.com// swearinnyc.tumblr.com// albiesrocknrollmixtapes.tumblr.com// albielovesrocknroll@gmail.com
