We're hearing a lot about diversity and inclusion these days (which is great!) but as we'll learn in this episode, those two words and what they stand for are at the very core of what guided the earliest days of Newport Folk and Jazz over sixty years ago, continuing to this day. And as we know, there is still much work to be done to make our world a just and equal place. Listen in as the women of Our Native Daughters share the experience of their powerful performance at Newport in 2019, their mission of amplifying the perspectives of Black American women from the time of slavery through the present, and discuss the ongoing need for better representation across genres - in particular Americana and Country - that have their roots in the black community, and at events like Newport Folk. Amplifying women's voices, and women of color, is an important part of this conversation, too, and Yola speaks on the importance of The Highwomen's debut at Newport Folk and Brandi Carlile's all female headlining set, as well as her own sense of purpose in occupying and owning space in what is currently an overwhelmingly white genre. We dive into the history of Newport and why the insistence racial equality and diversity of its lineups was an especially personal mission of George Wein's - one that he carried to New Orleans when creating Jazz Fest alongside the parents of Preservation Hall's Ben Jaffe. and how that festival in turn helped to integrate New Orleans. And Colin Meloy and Judy Collins join us to talk about folk music's history as a tool for organizing and empowering the disenfranchised, especially through the voice of Pete Seeger. The fight continues to surround hate and force it to surrender. Festival Circuit: Newport Folk is presented by Osiris Media, and hosted by Carmel Holt. It is co-written, co-produced and edited by Carmel and Julian Booker, who is also the series' audio engineer. Production assistance from Zach Brogan. Executive producers are RJ Bee and Christina Collins. Show Logo and art by Mark Dowd.  The series theme music is "Ruminations Pt. 3 (Afternoon Haze)" by Steven Warwick. Welcome to Festival Circuit: Newport Folk!  In our first episode, we take you straight to historic Fort Adams State Park, the site where the Newport Folk family gathers to celebrate music and community each July. We learn directly from Newport crew members about the energy, planning, work, and love that goes into envisioning and building the festival each year. We'll take you across the Harbor, through the gates, and into the Fort to experience Newport through the eyes, ears, and hearts of some of the people who are at the center of making Newport Folk what it is, year after year. And we'll find out why one Veteran Nurse from Newport takes her vacation days every summer to stand at her gate. This is where we begin to weave together some of the voices and stories across the decades that all make up the fabric of the bigger story of how Newport Folk has endured and continues to offer magic and the unexpected, for all. We'll see you at the Fort, don't forget to hydrate and wear sunscreen! Festival Circuit: Newport Folk is presented by Osiris Media, and hosted by Carmel Holt. Fenne Lily is a singer and songwriter from Dorset, England. She released her first album in 2018, but I didn't find her music until 2023, when she put out her third album, Big Picture. The album she released in between those two was one that got a little lost in the lockdown, when all her touring plans around it got canceled. All of that plays into the story she tells in this episode, about making her song “Lights Light Up” from that third album. I spoke to Fenne in front of a live audience at WBUR CitySpace in Boston. Coming up, you'll hear how the song evolved across different versions of demos and then in the studio, where she recorded it with Grammy-nominated producer Brad Cook. For more, visit songexploder.net/fenne-lily.

I wanted to make a song about the ebb and flow of a longtime love story. I thought it might feel untraditional, but a little more in alignment with my experience to write about feeling insecure or foiled in some way internally, but always finding your way back to a newness or an intimacy with the same person.” The track will appear on her forthcoming full-length, Tigers Blood, out March 22nd via Anti-. The LP was recorded with Brad Cook at Sonic Ranch in Texas, and features guest appearances from Spencer Tweedy and Phil Cook, in addition to Lenderman. Today I talk to Philip and Truett from the Austin, Texas band BRISCOE.  We talk about their recent show where they got to open for The Dave Matthews Band, the making of the new album WEST OF IT ALL, a couple of the songs off the new album and more!   ABOUT BRISCOE: Briscoe is Truett Heintzelman and Philip Lupton. To record West of It All, the duo was joined by producer Brad Cook on bass, drummer Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver), and multi-instrumentalist Phil Cook (Megafaun, Hiss Golden Messenger). Signed by ATO Records while undergrads, the Texan duo wrote West of It All as graduation loomed in the distance, funneling the stories of their college experience — from heartbreak to hard-won lessons to weekend trips into the rural countryside — into a raw, rugged blend of classic and contemporary influences. The result is a collection of 10 songs with folksy hooks and bold songwriting that bridges the gap between classic American roots music and its modern-day incarnation.    Formed at University of Texas at Austin, Briscoe quickly went from college gigs to selling out Antone's and the Continental Club Gallery. As Briscoe continued to perform and grow their fanbase, a wider audience began to take notice. They soon opened shows for Noah Kahan and Ruston Kelly and were selected for dates with Zach Bryan and Caamp. After recently graduating from UT, Briscoe has had a packed touring summer filled with festivals alongside some of music's biggest names — Bonnaroo, Winnetka Music Festival, FairWell Festival, Catbird Music Festival, and Iron Blossom Music Festival are a few.  The band is currently headlining a tour this fall to support West of It All.  You can order the new album and Briscoe Merchandise at : www.briscoetheband.com **************   KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.     Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see a couple video segments from each of our interviews.  Just search "know good music".   Thanks for listening Rob

In the winter of 2007, a songwriter by the name of Justin Vernon returned to the Wisconsin woods, not far from where he grew up. Just a few months later, he emerged with “For Emma, Forever Ago”—his first album produced under the name Bon Iver. Since then, Vernon and various bandmates have released three more records, won two Grammys, and collaborated with Kanye West, becoming one of the most celebrated bands in indie music. The music critic Amanda Petrusich spoke with Vernon at The New Yorker Festival, alongside his bandmates Brad Cook and Chris Messina. They discuss using made-up words as lyrics; Vernon's deep, deep love of “Northern Exposure”; and how a group like Bon Iver engages with current events in today's toxic political climate.    Bon Iver performed “U (Man Like),” “Marion,” and “RABi”; Vernon was accompanied by Sean Carey, Jenn Wasner, and Mike Lewis.     This story originally aired November 29, 2019

The music of Kevin Morby has colorful textural layers much like the human who creates it. On his newest album, Sundowner, Morby is embracing a mellow, yet dramatic sound that runs parallel to his current surroundings of his hometown, Kansas City. He moved back to a house he purchased in 2015 recently and has been working on music relentlessly since then, which is what produced the songs on the new record. He recorded the album in Texas with Brad Cook in order to capture the essence of the midwest. After living and making music on both coasts, he wanted to create something that was entirely landlocked. On Basic Folk, we talk about the process of writing and creating this new album. Morby also talks about his experience with panic attacks as a young man and his current relationship with fear and anxiety. He talks about the death of musician Jamie Ewing, who was his best friend. Jamie died of an overdose 12 years ago, but has had a huge impact on shaping Kevin's life.Morby also talks about how his partner, Katie Crutchfield, who is known as Waxahatchee. This is the first record that Katie's been in Kevin's life for the entire creation of an album. It's interesting to hear the effect they both have on the other's music! I also got him to talk about his painting, which you can find at KevinMorbyArtsnFarts on Instagram. Kevin's a friendly, insightful and sensitive person, which is reflected in everything he creates. I am grateful he found time for the interview! This is a good one!!! Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Listen in as the CXR community discusses a wide range of topics focused on attracting, engaging and retaining the best talent. We're glad you're here. Chris Hoyt 0:16Hello everybody, this is Chris Hoyt with CareerXroads, and I am on the line with Brad Cook head of global talent over at Intuitive Surgical Brad, how are you, Brad Cook, Intuitive 0:24Good how are you? Chris Hoyt 0:25I'm doing pretty well. I'm kind of excited about this topic. For those who don't already know, a whole bunch of us have come together to stand up a new nonprofit called the CXR Foundation. And it's sort of spun out from under some work that was being done before. Last years charitable work in the field when we actually used to work in soup kitchens, and shelters and all these really, really interesting places when we were traveling back in the day. And then, most recently out of a project called recruiters, recruiting recruiters, which you were heavily involved in. And so I want to take a pause, I'll take a breath right there and just ask you, maybe you can give an overview to listeners who haven't heard yet, what the CXR Foundation has been established to do, why a nonprofit? What what it's all about? Brad Cook, Intuitive 1:13It's a good question. I think, for me, it really stemmed from the recruiters recruiting recruiters, and it's still a mouthful doesn't matter how many times I say it, um, it really jumped out from that there was so many people wanted to get involved and wanted to help, and it was vendors that would normally be competing with each other. Yeah, and to do it under the umbrella of a nonprofit just means Yeah, we're gonna start to offer it to a lot more people out there and do a lot more good. I think that's Yeah, the roundtable stuff really showed there was so many people in our industry, especially in tough times with COVID, wanting to do whatever they could, and you know, if we can put an under a nonprofit, and then more people can be part of that, or actually, the work that comes out of it can now help industry, I think it just makes the industry a better place and continues to make the industry a better place. And quite frankly, that's why I love being part of CXR it continues to give back to our community and makes us all better individuals. Chris Hoyt 2:12Yeah, I think you raise an interesting point, because it's not just about talent, giving back we're talking about our talent practitioners giving back we're now talking about sort of grouping together a teaming up or pairing up people who are in the solution space, the vendor space providers under the umbrella of a nonprofit, so they can continue to do good work alongside their competitors. And alongside some of their customers, potential customers, but never customers. Right, right. Yep. Yeah, so there's a number of projects, because we're talking about community, the community aspect, we're talking about the charitable aspect. And we also talk about the industry standards are establishing those pieces. And we've got about four projects that are one full blown that's in the works, which has been pretty successful recruiters recruiting recruiters. Okay, doesn't mouthful every time. And then we've got the one project that we've talked a little bit about, and that's the interview coaching for those who are employed helping those who are still looking for work. We've got another two that are sort of on the in the ideation looking for the correct sponsorship and alignment on which is the I'm going to put you on the spot in a minute, which is the get cooking program, which is kind of a fun one where we have a theme around some sort of meal, people can donate a minimum amount of money, but up to whatever they want. And part of those proceeds goes to the Chef's Choice, charity of choice, and then they get access to the online cookbook, etc.

Announcer 0:00Welcome to the CXR channel, our premier podcast for talent acquisition and talent management. Listen in as the CXR community discusses a wide range of topics focused on attracting, engaging and retaining the best talent. We're glad you're here. Shannon Pritchett, CXR 0:17Welcome, everyone, we have just wrapped up our third and final analytics meeting of the year, which ironically, we ended 2019. Remember that year with analytics as well. So it was a fabulous meeting, we had two and a half hours, packed, crammed full of information, we implemented something new, which was a speed dashboard sharing. And with me today are a three out of four of the people that share the dashboards. Cheri Hansen from Sierra Nevada, Ted Chung, from EY, and Tony from BASF. Thank you so much for joining us. Really want to hear some of your favorite parts about today's meeting. So Cheri, why don't we start with you? What did you enjoy most about our meeting today? Cheri Hanson, Sierra Nevada 0:58Yeah, I love thanks, Shannon. There were, there was so much I enjoyed it, I think I was smiling through the whole thing. I had in my first meeting, breakout session where I really liked all the breakout sessions and how it kind of broke everything up with the different surveys and things. I really like having to brand new people to CXR meetings and my first introduction, and so I could help share them, share with them some things about the group itself. And then I have a couple little takeaways to give them of information that they that would help them just in their jobs that was outside kind of what we were talking about today. But we're what keeps you up at night kinds of things for them. So that was that was really cool to be able to do them. So hopefully, we've made converts out of them today. Shannon Pritchett, CXR 1:44Yeah, it was always nice to see the analytics community expand. And I think the theme of the last couple analytics meetings I've been a part of is, you know, all the new people that keep joining in and keep returning, just helps the community grow, and of course, the knowledge to share. So great observation with that. Ted, any highlights from you your point of view today? Ted-Phai Chung, EY 2:04I guess, the favorite part is probably no. Same as, as aha moments is that, you know, we got people in different capacities, trying to do the same thing. You know, whether it's just how we're organized, you know, what kind of focus that we're or the amount of resources that we have. And then we'll try and solve similar problems or answer the similar business questions. And, and, you know, and we're taking similar approaches. And and I think it's just a matter of, you know, talking about data visualization, how do we send that message and have it resonate with our, with our business? And, you know, with data visualization is, you know, if you can make it simple and effective, you know, stick with them a lot longer, and a lot better. Shannon Pritchett, CXR 2:58Yeah, I would agree, I was surprised, not really surprised. And maybe because I haven't heard this conversation with our past analytics meetings was how much that you know, us all looking at different dashboards, we focus on how it's presented to our end user, you know, whoever is looking at it. And I guess putting myself in your shoes, I didn't realize not only how important is the quality of the data, which we talked about, but also how its presented. And so that was a big takeaway moment. And big aha moment for me too. And I loved hearing the feedback that was shared with you, Ted, because I got to look at your dashboard. And also the feedback that you gave to Brad Cook, who shared his dashboard after you. So that was that was my aha moment. And takeaway, Tony, what about you? Tony Lioi, BASF 3:48Thanks, Shannon, for me, you know, my favorite part of all these meetings, whenever I can have an opportunity to take part of them is just the simple interaction tha...

En realidad, se querían llamar Derek And The Dynamics. Escuchar audio

Produced by Brad Cook of Bon Iver and Johnathan Rado of Foxygen, it sees the duo of Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich expanding and deepening their sound. Sitting down for a backstage interview with AD, Kakacek says “more of our own true emotions” made it into the new songs, which were informed by the constant touring that followed the band’s first album. “We knew better what it felt like to play them every night.”   You might recognize Don Slepian’s name from Light in the Attic’s I Am the Center: Private Issue New Age Music in America 1950-1990 compilation, where he appeared alongside Laraaji, Joanna Brouk, Iasos, Steven Halpern and other early practitioners of cosmic devotional music. Two of his early ‘80s works have recently been reissued—Sea of Bliss by Numero Group and New Dawn on Morning Trip—and he had plenty to tell guest interviewer Jesse Locke about those heady, early days.   Earlier this month, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds released their 17th studio album, Ghosteen. A double album, ambient in nature and featuring two longform spoken word performances, it’s one of Cave’s most tender, centered on the loss of his son, and the idea of “a migrating spirit.” Marty Sartini Garner, longtime Aquarium Drunkard writer and a frequent guest on this podcast, wrote a review of the album for AV Club, praising its “otherworldly and spiritual quality.” He and co-host Jason P. Woodbury got together to discuss.

HOWA EP 53 - BRAD COOK      I was listening to Larry Klein on a recent mix with the masters explain this idea that a producer is someone that sees the spark of uniqueness in an artist and tries to amplify that.  That is a noble process and so nuanced that it takes years to know when to speak, when to encourage, when to call it a night, when to listen and so on. Brad knows aaaallll about aaaallll of this ! He's an excellent energy in the room and so many musicians can benefit from his touch.  I've only been privy to his vibe in a session on two occasions but his presence is both large and also magically effortless.  I think it's the fact that you know he gets it. He knows a real moment and he's in it for the depth, not the racking up of medals and the shallow status games.  The first time I met him, he was rather high and laughing at a bass. It was a gathering with Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) and a large crew of players in Nashville where I ended up shouting into a mic with the other members of the collective they call “Gangs” . That first meeting was a great hang but there was no time to chat and so I was super happy to bump into him again on my mystical trip to the sonic ranch in Texas. Turns out that's where a lot of the latest Bon Iver record was made and Brad was there the whole time as producer so it only seemed right to jump into that story and to see what that was all about and to feel out the ways Brad has learned to listen and cultivate the fledgling music growing in the room. He's a formidable musician and a very easy going chap. I loved chatting with him! Please welcome to the show BRAD COOK!   _______________________________   In the nitty I gently roll the dice on music asking what probability can offer the sequencer? Greetings from the rainy west. Welcome to the February episode of the Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions podcast. This episode, we’ve got a duo of musicians whose art blurs the lines between minimalism, the avant-garde, and Americana (whatever that word means in this fractured age). This episode, we’re joined by guitarist William Tyler. You might recognize him from our podcast’s theme song, “Four Corners,” or the essay he recently penned for Aquarium Drunkard, “Cosmic Pastoral,” which drew lines connecting the tranquil sounds of Windham Hill to cosmic new age, the modern jazz and classical sounds of ECM, and William’s own music. Your host Justin Gage sat down with him at Gold Diggers in East Hollywood as part of our recurring Talk Show series, to discuss and hear live selections from his most new record, Goes West. But first, we head to Wickenburg, Arizona where Jason P. Woodbury sat down with Bruce Hornsby to discuss his brand new, just announced album, Absolute Zero. It’s out April 12th, and like everything he does, it’s hard to put it in a box. Self-produced, the record features collaborations with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Brad Cook, ECM veteran Jack DeJohnette, guitarist Blake Mills, yMusic, Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, and others. There are moments inspired by jazz, others inspired by classical, some which draw on Hornsby’s folk and roots influences.

One of my favorite things is to be a fly on the wall in the recording studio and watch how other people make records.  I've had the opportunity to do that with a ton of artists/producers over the years, but few of them bring the level of commitment and ownership to a project the way Brad Cook does. Since moving to North Carolina over 10 years ago with his brother Phil and future Bon Iver founder Justin Vernon, Brad has become an integral part of an ever increasing number of essential recordings being made here in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area.

Matt Alder talks to Brad Cook of Informatica One of the most common themes I hear in conversations with in house recruiters is their frustration at the failings of their recruitment technology. A decade and a half on from the online recruitment revolution many employers are finding that their technology is holding them back rather than being the enabler it should be.My guest this week is Brad Cook, Global VP of Talent Acquisition for Informatica. Over the last five years Informatica have harnessed their CRM and ATS to win the battle against the global skill shortages in the talent markets where they operate proving that recruitment technology can be used strategically rather than just reactively.  In the interview we discuss:    •    Brad’s philosophy of capturing data once and using it many times    •    Why you need an SEO mindset to attract active candidates    •    The importance of analytics    •    How Informatica have reduced friction in their apply process to capture data from 45k applicants a year    •    Why candidate experience is critical    •    The one piece of data you must collect from each prospect    •    The current revolution in the ATS market that is driving a move away from legacy vendorsBrad also empathises the importance of humans at all stages of the recruitment process and makes it very clear that recruitment is not just a science it is also an art.Subscribe to this podcast in iTunes

This week on the Kansas City Baseball Vault, we discussed the young season and the Royals early success in 2013 and shared the elements that stood out to us in the first place start. Then we cycled in some great guests, starting with Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Kendrick's spirits were high following a successful Red Carpet premiere of "42", which saw a packed AMC Theater show the Jackie Robinson biopic. The event featured an collectibles auction and many Royals made appearances, as did the stars of the film, Chadwick Bozeman and Harrison Ford. We spoke about the movie, the event, and the lasting impact of sharing a story like Robinson's through film. We could talk to Bob for hours to hear all the stories, but we had to move on. We then talked with Brad Cook from OOTP Developments about the newest edition of Out of the Park Baseball and the new features of the highly-addicting baseball simulation game. We finished up by talking with Jason Parks of Baseball Prospectus. He wrote an article detailing concerns about Bubba Starling and we brought him on to ask him a bit more. He had an interesting take on some of the circumstances that may hold Starling back and while it's not uplifting, it's also important information to think about in evaluating the local prospect.

This week on the Kansas City Baseball Vault, we covered a little bit of everything. There were a few bright spots about the Royals play this year, though how much matters and how much is just spin was a question we tried to answer. There are still big holes to fill, especially starting pitching, and that led us to discuss the future rotation and who may be a part of it. Of course, that led us to the question of Luke Hochevar. Comments in the Royals post-season press conference suggest that they'll bring Hochevar back. That same conference also unleashed a whole other set of questions about the organization and how it's looking to fix the problems. On a brighter note, we got to talk with an Orioles fan - Neal Moorhouse - who you know as Carne Cabeza or the LuchadOriole from the final episode of the Royalman Report. He talked about Baltimore's response to their playoff win against Texas and the feelings within the city going into the next series. Finally, we talked with Brad Cook from Out of the Park Baseball.
