Maintaining Your Focus With MATT WICKS From GRINDING EYES

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersGrinding Eyes craft a uniquely dark sonic landscape, fusing psychedelic shoegaze, drone rock, and ambient garage punk. The Sydney band released their third studio album, Out of Focus, last Friday, further capitalizing on the momentum built through their 2018 self-titled album and 2021's Taste the Monochrome.Known for their relentless touring, Grinding Eyes have shared stages with The Jesus and Mary Chain, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, Swervedriver, Graveyard, Moon Duo, Dinosaur Jr., Monkey Wrench, Superchunk, New Candys and Mudhoney, as well as Australian bands, Amyl and the Sniffers, Cosmic Psychos, Spiderbait, The Drones, Straight Arrows, DMA's, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, POND, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and Tropical Fuck Storm. The band's line up also boasts members from past and present bands The Mess Hall, Treatment, The Laurels, Bliss and Kimono Drag Queens, further cementing their deep roots in Australia's underground music scene. But Grinding Eyes are more than just the sum of their past bands. They are a sonic extension into another realm of musical experimentation held back without boundaries or expectations.Vocalist Matt Wicks joined HEAVY to tell us more."With this album, I suppose we sort of concentrated a little bit more on the sounds where previously we've pretty much done everything live," he measured. "We would dive straight in, start recording, do a lot of long sessions and sort of see what comes out. On this one we tried to refine it a little bit more, do most of the songwriting and we actually played most of these songs live for a couple of months. So they became a life of their own. We wanted to really harness more of a tighter sound where we could mess with it more in the studio than just having the sort of raw organic rock and roll feel of it."In the full interview, HEAVY spoke with Matt about the release of Out Of Focus following a year of delays. Matt expressed his relief regarding the album's completion and highlighted the band's creative evolution, mentioning that they have already started writing new material. The album features a mix of musical styles, reflecting their organic songwriting process.During their forthcoming Australian tour, the band intends to perform a substantial portion of the new album alongside some older tracks. Furthermore, they will support Pig's Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs on their European tour later this year.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Rose City Band - “Chasing Rainbows” from the 2023 album Garden Party on Thrill Jockey. Rose City Band, the brainchild of Ripley Johnson (also of Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo and, with a name like that, was either born to play music or be the keeper of facts that you may, or may not, believe) is due to release their fourth record later this month. Titled Garden Party, the album follows up 2021's Earth Trip and is said to be, “A celebration of summer and all it brings: communal gatherings, the respites offered by nature, and an appreciation for even the simplest beauty, from 12-foot sunflowers to a contorted carrot planted in the spring.” The record's lead single and our Song of the Day does not dispute that claim. “Chasing Rainbows,” by name alone, suggests the nostalgic innocence of childhood when one's summer days might consist of chasing things one cannot capture but deeply believe they can. Led by a rollicking pedal steel by Barry Walker, the song actually tells a story not of childhood but on the road on tour, which can feel like a certain kind of childhood in that your days are filled with car rides and playing music. ”Tour ‘round the world and back,” sings Johnson. “Throw it out and you blaze a path /Wanderin' a dream all our own.” Rose City Band will be chasing rainbows all the way to Seattle on Friday, May 5th to play the Tractor Tavern. Read Martin Douglas' Throwaway Style piece on Rose City Band and watch Ripley Johnson front a Wooden Shjips KEXP in-studio performance from all the way back in 2013 at the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Marc Hauser from Rotondes joined tom on The Breakfast Show this morning to talk us through the line up and let us know what people can expect from this year's edition. Since 2008 Congés Annulés has been held in Luxembourg by the team behind the Rotondes music venue in Luxembourg City. Taking advantage of the quieter month of August in Luxembourg's cultural calendar, the festival sees concerts being held nearly every night over the course of four weeks. Past editions have seen acts like Parquet Courts, Bo Ningen, Molly Nilson, The KVB, Los Bitchos, Moon Duo and Angel Olsen play to intimate crowds on warm summer evenings. As Marc points out the festival aims to touch many different sounds so that there is something for everyone over the course of the month. This year highlights include Math Rock giants, Battles, Warp Records signees Squid, Ugandan electronic outfit Nihiloxica, Australian boogie-pop maestro Donny Benet and British indie-dance duo PVA. Festival passes have already sold out but tickets for all of the concerts and more info can be found at: https://www.rotondes.lu/fr/programmation/temps-forts/conges-annules

He's developed into a guitarist who rarely takes a wrong step, minimal, moody, and lovely.” Johnson joined us for a conversation about coming up in the punk and counter culture scene, his multiple bands, the influence of the Dead, and “the ultimate rock & roll statement” of ? and the Mysterians' “96 Tears.”

The Big Playback is a podcast about all things music.Episode 1 of ‘The Big Playback' is titled Is Music A Religion? This first episode investigates how music and spirituality are inextricably intertwined and takes a closer look at the transcendent experience of live music, the re-enactment of its rituals, connection and belonging. It examines what it means to be a part of the music community, from the maker to the listener – the spectrum of ways music affects us, from the individual to the collective, which can be both a social glue and a vehicle for transcendence. The episode centers around conversations with three guests: Brian Collins (Chair of Indian Religion and Philosophy, Ohio University), Sanae Yamada (Moon Duo, Vive La Void) and Yale Evelev (Luaka Bop Records). The ScholarAs an actively lecturing professor, music lover and record collector who often writes articles about religion and popular culture on the side, Brian Collins takes us through the various aspects of Indian philosophy and religion which were incorporated into popular music in the 60's, giving birth to a radical psychedelic culture which lead to so many modern musical genres of today. The SeekerSanae Yamada is a Portland-based artist, composer, musician and writer, who plays keyboard in the bands Moon Duo as well as her solo project Vive La Void. As an investigator into many spiritual traditions, from buddhism and meditation to feminist anthropology, Yamada takes on the question Is Music A Religion? from the perspective of someone who, for over a decade, has been active within a scene which glamorizes spirituality without necessarily practicing it.The DevoteeFounded in 1989, Luaka Bop Records boasts a rather mysterious catalogue, the crown jewels of which are often archival projects of artists who have already passed on, or rarely still play live. While their releases include the likes of Alice Coltrane, Tim Maia, William Onyeabor, as well as the upcoming Pharoah Sanders and Floating Points album, Yale Evelev speaks about his process and philosophy behind the World Spirituality Classics series, and why he views himself as merely a conduit for the music, in his work.Host of 'The Big Playback' is Margaret Munchheimer, an American visual artist and writer living in the Netherlands, and veteran Le Guess Who? supporter since 2012.CreditsProduction: Margaret Munchheimer & Le Guess Who?Contributing Editor: Jasper WillemsArtwork: Lily McNeil, Lily Nilly Art / www.lilynillyart.comMusic: Ultrabillions / ultrabillions.bandcamp.com

Rose City Band - "Only Lonely" from the 2020 album Summerlong on Thrill Jockey. Portland-based musician Ripley Johnson returns with his project, the appropriately-titled Rose City Band, the latest addition to his musical resume that also includes Moon Duo and Wooden Shjips. While the "band" name might allude to a larger outfit, the Rose City Band is more of a solo endeavor for Johnson, with just the addition of John Jeffrey on drums. While his Moon Duo partner Sanae Yamada was committed to a theatre project, Johnson took to his home studio to write and record this sophomore album, Summerlong. With today's Song of the Day, he taps into those feelings of isolation, revealing in a press release: “There are times when you’re feeling so down that you wish you were just plain lonely. I think there’s a sense of resilience in it, though, a determination to roll with the punches and push on through. I wrote the music a while back and figured it would be an upbeat kind of tune. I guess I was just pretty down when I got around to writing the lyrics.” Read the full post KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

Ripley Johnson’s Rose City Band project started as an act of wish fulfillment. One of the creative minds behind Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo just wanted to “start a country-rock band so I can retire and just play down at the pub every Thursday night during happy hour.” The resulting first album in 2019 was a hazy stroll through the morning dew of a not yet technicolor world. With hints of psychedelia and twang, it was a peak at the source of a style of music before it heads further out into the cosmos. One year later, Johnson is back with Summerlong, an album that echoes Rose City Band’s quiet beginnings but imbues its primal sound with brightness and warmth that is worthy of its title. Brokedown Pod’s Jonathan Hart joins us to discuss this latest chapter in Ripley Johnson’s wild trip across the universe. PLUS! New music from Melbourne, Australia’s Bananagun!Love this show? Another week, another two beers, another six albums to talk about. Join Becca Ruiz and Josh Wodarz as they once again dive through the new releases... and end up talking about about pre-1900 art? Yeah, that's the way we roll, apparently. We dive through new releases by Colleen Green, MISTERWIVES, BADBADNOTGOOD feat. Ghostface Killah, Moon Duo, The Mighty Sceptres, and Lady Lamb the Beekeeper. Spoiler Alert: We like it all, but to varying degrees. But we sure as hell don't agree on pre-1900 art. Show notes and links: Squatters Hop Risin (squatters.com). Colleen Green (hardlyart.com). This show features several new releases from March 29. More information about the records is below.*Update!* I think I mentioned in this show that All Eternals Deck was the Mountain Goats third LP, which is obviously incorrect (ouch, indie cred!). What I meant to and should have said was that this is the third LP with a more rock-oriented trio. Sorry, ya'll.Beat City Radio #583 PlaylistDownload show (right-click, save target as): Beat City Radio #583Stream: A Few of This Week's New Releases The Mountain Goats released All Eternals Deck, which takes its name from a fictional set of tarot cards. The album shows that John Darnielle's songwriting is still quite solid and the rhythm section gets a boost from Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster.  Stream the album on NPR's website. Favorite tracks: Damn These Vampires, High Hawk Season, The Autopsy Garland, For Charles Bronson, Birth of Serpents.Hosannas is a duo from Portlandia who create sweeping and beautiful experimental dream pop tinged with cosmic spaghetti western sounds and shoegazing tendencies. They are back with a FREE EP, Thug Life Nicole, that follows the release of their third album, Together late last year. Find out more about the band and download the EP from the link above.Bonus mp3s:   Hosannas - Obsolete PeopleHosannas - Walroos From the Moon Duo website: "Moon Duo was formed by Ripley Johnson of Wooden Shjips and Sanae Yamada in San Francisco in 2009. Inspired initially by the legendary duo of John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, Moon Duo counts such variant groups as Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide, and Cluster as touchstones. Utilizing primarily guitar, keyboards, and vocals, the Duo plays space against form to create a primeval sound experience." This experimental psychedelic duo dropped Mazes this week on Sacred Bones Records.Bonus mp3s:Moon Duo - MazesMoon Duo - ScarsMoon Duo - When You Cut The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are a shoegazing bliss/gliss rock quartet from Brooklyn, NY. They released their debut self-titled album a couple of years ago to much critical acclaim. That record was very much rooted in the 80s, with elements of post-punk, dream pop, twee, and the C86 sound. It was a very saccharine heart-on-the-sleeve album, but balanced those elements with some darker tones and distortion. The sophomore album, Belong out on Slumberland Records, builds on the first album's elements and takes them further with a BIG and slick wall of sound production style, courtesy of Flood and Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode). The overall sound of this album is early 90s guitar pop-rock, though there are some synth-washed tracks that recall Modern English and The Cure. Belong is a big-sounding, shimmering and slick, heart-breakingly blissful record that glides along beautifully and is enjoyable, though cloying at times. Favorite tracks: Heart in Your Heartbreak, My Terrible Friend,Anne With an E, The Body.Bonus mp3:The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - I Wanna Go All the Way (B-side of the Belong 7" vinyl single). We also played a new one from Swedish indie rockers Peter Bjorn and John's new album, Gimme Some and a couple from Dirty Beaches. We'll feature Dirty Beaches in another post.Enjoy!Bonus Video: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Young Adult Friction from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart out on Slumberland Records in 2009.

The sweat continues to drip from my fingers and on to tasty new platters of wax as Vancouver is pummeled with a heat wave. The show kicked off this week with some serious feminine heat, courtesy of midnight disco-murk goddess Nite Jewel, a new CDR of outtakes by the Magik Markers taken from their recently released 'Balf Quarry' LP, the new tightly wound Little Claw on Ecstatic Peace, and a new re-issue from Grouper. No wonder my palms were so sweaty in the booth this week.New 10"er by Nerve City has been receiving many hits at home, and I couldn't be more excited for a full length LP from them due in the coming months from local label Sweet Rot. Stay tuned for more on them...Managed to snake a copy of the limited to 200 cassette (sold only at the Captured Tracks/Woodsist fest that happened a few weeks back in NYC) by the Fresh and Onlys. Wow, can that band ever punp out the tuneful garage kickers. Two 7"s, two cassettes, an LP all in one year? Scratch that...two LPs. New full length of all unreleased material due out on Woodsist sometime in September. Band of the year?Ty Segall continues his onslaught of 2009 with a handful of 7"s, a new full length and a split LP with the UK's Black Time. West Coast tour coming from the one-man wonder. Have to fit that into my schedule somewhere along the lines...Coupla' new-ish numbers popped in the mail from the burgeoning Almost Ready label. The new Pink Noise is worth the peeping, but the best of the batch is the 'World Is Lousy With Ideas Vol. 8', which contains the best Blank Dogs song I've e'er laid ears on (played on this show, thanks to Grimmertown for heppin' me that one), not to mention exclusive tracks by Pink Reason, Times New Viking, Vivian Girls, Sic Alps, and a heap of others. This one won't stick around for too much longer. Finally got to lay my hands on a copy of the Amen Dunes LP, which is slowly making it's way up the ladder of best of '09. A lot of acoustic-based lo-fi downer-pop. It's a mouthful but worth the investigatin'.Moon Duo, which is Ripley the guitarist from Wooden Shjips, continues on down the trail being burned by his mothership. Get a hold of Aquarius Records for this one, as it seems to be disappearing fast. New Blues Control finally made it's way up to Canada, and was it ever worth the wait. 4 tracks of molten psych, submerged and raised up in all the right spots. Not quite as tops as Puff, but a necessary piece of future psych.Squeezed in a nice spotlight on Indiana cassette label El Tule, which just released the Ducktails side-project Parasails. More drifting beach psych from the reigning king. El Tule has also been pumping out some other great cassettes, two of which are highlighted below. Anyone interested in some Parasails action should drop a comment below.Until next week, keep yer records out of the sun.
