A few weeks ago, a New Yorker cartoon of a bookstore employee moving a stack of dystopian novels from the 'fiction' section to the 'nonfiction' section went viral. It naturally set off a polarised conversation online about which of the novels – '1984', 'Brave New World', 'The Handmaid's Tale' – offered the best prognosis for our world today. With the onslaught of abortion bans, which seek to limit and control women's reproductive rights and their freedom of choice, being passed by several states in America, it seems Margaret Atwood's 'The Handmaid's Tale' has hit the bullseye. With this episode, we decided to break up our regular programming to bring you a podcast special about something that is unfolding right now as you're listening to this. We talk to to Joe Dator, the author of the New Yorker cartoon, about his brilliantly tongue-in-cheek attempt at crystallising the raison d'être of this podcast in a single image. We then hand off the microphone to two of our colleagues here at Mashable, Rachel Thompson and Rebecca Ruiz, who discuss how 'The Handmaid's Tale' is used, as narrative and aesthetic, by women protesting the abortion bans in the US. They then go on to talk about the impacts such restrictions have on the lives of women in America and compare it to the case of Northern Ireland, where abortion is illegal.

It's time for Rebecca Ruiz and Josh Wodarz to dive deep into the tastes that created their musical and beerical palette. Yes, it's another canon show. They take a close look at the 2013 album We the Common by Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, and talk about it's funky groove, and simple, but effective poetry. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a long standing classic American Pale Ale, one that even set the scene for craft brews to come later. The beer is also simple, but effective, and brings a smile to the cohosts. Hey, everyone, it's the 47th episode of Pint Notes. That's right. Pint Notes. After two years, we're changing the official name to match our social media handles. It's kind of like when Josh was 8 and decided he didn't want people to call him Joshua anymore, only Josh. It's the same seedy basement bar, the same Joshua Wodarz and Rebecca Ruiz. As always different music - this week they look at The xx, Allison Crutchfield, and Ron Gallo. Oh, and a new logo by the talented Zoe Wodarz.
Welcome to the second canon show from Half-Pints, Whole Notes, where Rebecca Ruiz and Josh Wodarz go over one beer and one album that helped shape their palates for both beer and music. This one centers on the excellent Bell's Two Hearted Ale out of Michigan, and the debut album by Montreal indie rock band Arcade Fire; Funeral.
Hey everyone, Josh Wodarz and Rebecca Ruiz apologize for their hiatus and have come back to the cast. The pod? Is there a "hip" word for podcasts? If so, we're trying to use it like we're hip. Oh well. There's beer and new albums from Honey Blood, Mannequin Pussy, Slothrust, Justice, NVDES, and Our Girl. Enjoy! https://open.spotify.com/user/riskylengths/playlist/5a4jZXOJgYRzjvUQfE7L4g
Though it is the last show before Halloween, the only spooky thing about this episode is the drawing of a sculpin monk fish on the cans of Ballast Point. And the disappearing pineapple. Oh right, music. There's new releases from Phantogram, Shovels & Rope, Twist, and LIZZO. Plus we introduce MBecca's Metal Minute. That is not a typo. She made me type that. Oh; and as always, it's hosted by Rebecca Ruiz and Josh Wodarz. https://open.spotify.com/user/riskylengths/playlist/0diN4efVpaDoocam6BJdpb
It's October, and new releases are ramping up. And of course, there's beer. There's always beer. https://open.spotify.com/user/riskylengths/playlist/4siptlC2lLSBiSYpYg9NbD

Rebecca Ruiz and Josh Wodarz talk bout their four favorite albums from the past half year! It's a check in on whether they still love what they said they did months ago. A bonus, they think things sound weirder in the headphones than actually came out on tape. This episode is fine and they have nothing to worry about. More bonus, they talk about a recent article that talks about the death of purchasing media, especially digital. As always, there is the beer, things from the last half year (well in one case more than half a year) not featured on the podcast, but they can't get out of their head - Boom Island Saison Farmhouse Ale, and Tyranena Painted Ladies Pumpkin Spice Ale. Plus, the albums they liked that they realized they haven't been listening to as much. Show notes and links: Saison (boomislandbrewing.com).
