Angela is joined by Dr. Dale Bredesen, who discusses the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and the difference between Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. He emphasises the importance of early detection and treatment, as Alzheimer's is a progressive disease that can be present for many years before symptoms appear. Dr. Bredesen explains the four phases of Alzheimer's and the potential for prevention and reversal of cognitive decline through lifestyle interventions. KEY TAKEAWAYS Alzheimer's disease is a common and devastating form of dementia that affects millions of people worldwide. Alzheimer's is characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive function, including memory loss, difficulty with language and communication, and impaired daily functioning. Early detection and intervention are crucial in managing Alzheimer's disease. The earlier the treatment is initiated, the better the chances of preventing or reversing cognitive decline. Lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, brain training, detoxification, and targeted supplements play a significant role in preventing and managing Alzheimer's disease. Hormone therapy, specifically bioidentical hormone replacement, may be beneficial for women experiencing menopause-related cognitive decline BEST MOMENTS "Your generation is the first generation that does not have to fear Alzheimer's." "We can pretty much prevent it or do early reversals in just about everyone." "We do see people even in late stages where we get some improvement, but they don't tend to come all the way back to normal." "Sleep is one of the ways that you stay sharp, that you improve your processing speed." Do you believe it? That Alzheimer's can be prevented, stopped, and even reversed? It's true. Does that mean it will be eradicated from our culture? We know how to stop obesity in an individual too, but it's not happening here in America. This show is about you however, you and those close to you. Can you do something about preventing, stopping, and reversing Alzheimer's? Absolutely. There are never any guarantees when it comes to one's health, but there are probabilities you can count on. In this show we bring you quite possibly the world's leading authority on prevention, stopping, and reversing Alzheimer's. Dr Dale Bredesen, author of, The End of Alzheimers and The End of Alzheimer's program. You need to realize most of the traditional leaders in the arena of Alzheimer's aren't of the belief you can do anything but manage Alzheimer's and its inevitable decline. Alzheimer's disease has become the third leading cause of death in the United States, after cardiovascular disease and cancer, destined to rob 45 million of the Americans currently living of their most fundamental reasoning capabilities if we do not do something to prevent and reverse the process. Dr Bredesen profoundly cites, “You know cancer survivors. Hardly anyone knows an Alzheimer's survivor.” But he knows many. Dr Bredesen's credentials and bio are long enough for a show in and of itself. If you are concerned about Alzheimer's, and everyone should be, type B R E D E S E N and Alzheimer's in your search engine and you'll find all you want. Dr. Dale Bredesen is not only intelligent, talented and someone who can think unconventionally, but someone who is also kind, humble and can express very complex systems in terms we can all understand. Today we learn more about his groundbreaking research in dementia. It was an honor to have Dr. Bredesen on the podcast back in 2021 and now a double honor to have him on for a second time to discuss one of his most recent books The First Survivors of Alzheimers. Dr. Dale Bredesen is a scientist, a researcher and an expert in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease. He published over 200 papers, which many of them you can find in a pubmed search. In 2017 he wrote a groundbreaking book and New York Times bestseller called : The End of Alzheimer's and then several years later wrote a follow up book: The End of Alzheimer's Program (2020). And last year he wrote “The First Survivors of Alzheimer's: How Patients Recovered Life and Hope in Their Own Words”. Dr. Bredesen is a professor at UCLA, but he's also taught at UC San Francisco, and the University of California San Diego. He directed the Program on Aging at the Burnham Institute before going to the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in 1998 as its founding president and CEO. Most doctors and experts in this field say there is no cure for Alzheimer's. But Dr. Bredesen blatantly says that Alzheimer's is absolutely reversible and preventable. He is going against the grain with his research, which he has been working on for decades. He's been consulting patients who have been told by their doctors to get their affairs in order before they die, because there is nothing they can do to help them. But now, Dr. Bredesen is not only giving these people hope, but actually a future they can look forward to. This episode is sponsored by Oxford Healthspan. This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker, Athletic Greens, and Paleovalley. Until recently, the most popular approach to treating Alzheimer's has been to focus on managing the symptoms in the brain. This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker and Birch Living.Alzheimer's disease is one of the most significant global health threats we face today. It is an ailment that, as our population ages, is forecasted to become a worldwide epidemic. Immunodeficiency [20:52] Mary says: Hi Robb and Nicki! I love your podcast and have been listening on and off for a few years. You are the only health based podcast that I still listen to since everyone has gone crazy this past year and I highly value all the work that you are both doing! So.... my husband has described me as the most sickly health fanatic that he has ever met. I catch every cold, have frequent sinus, bronchitis, yeast infections, strep, skin rashes, stomach flus, bouts of fatigue and dizziness. I have tried every diet out there to feel better. I have your books Wired to Eat and The Paleo Solution, so I am familiar with carb testing and using a glucose meter. If I am active, running (10k plus or hard intervals etc) and lifting weights, I know that fast acting carbs like sugar are needed or my recovery will suffer. For days. I use a manual glucose monitor to track this. Intermitent fasting and keto are both a no go for me as I will have disrupted sleep, poor performance and fasting blood sugar levels under 4mmol/L, and with keto my ldl levels go up. I know everyone is so sick of hearing about covid but it plays into my question. I had been low carb for years, and in the most recent year eating closer to carnivore with fruit and local raw honey. I have also had chronic low ferritin for years, even eating steak fried in a cast iron pan once or twice a day and avoiding grains and dairy. I am a personal trainer and runner and was very fit. I got covid October 30 to be exact. It knocked my socks off and I have never been the same. Energy crashes, days of extreme fatigue and dizzy spells, limited running performance. I have not worked full time since. I was referred to a post covid pulminary clinic and I am showing slight blockage in my lungs. They were testing for autoimmune and I surprised them with underimmune, low immunoglobulin IgG. We have recently been in contact with previously unknown family and found out that my 1/2 aunt has primary immunodeficiency. I am on the wait list to see an immunologist but it could be months before I get seen. I am at a loss at what to do now. I have given up on paleo etc mostly out of dispair that anything is going to help. What was working diet wise (the near carnivore) prior to having covid no longer works. I did the DNA fit after listening to that episode of your podcast and it has come back recomending moderate carb and protien, no celiac etc. Besides my Low IgG and ferritin all my bloodwork is great. Not sure where to go from here, what questions I should be asking Drs, should I redo the carb testing as my body seems to have changed? Should I join your group for the upcoming reset? Sorry that this has been so long and rambling! I would greatly appreciate any insight that you may have. Thank you, Mary 2. Is Alzheimer's preventable? [29:18] Edrie says: Hi Robb and Nicki, hope you guys are doing well. Thanks for all that you do, your podcast is something I look forward to every week. I have a subject I'd love your insight on: Alzheimer's Disease, specifically the prevention of it. My dad was diagnosed about 5-6 years ago (at age 64ish) and we just had to move him to a memory care facility because he needs 24 hour a day care. It's heartbreaking and terrifying to watch a loved one slip away and now to see all the advanced stage residents, a glimpse of what's to come. It's too late to delay or improve my dad's disease, but I am very interested in not spending my senior years living that way. Aside from maintaining a healthy diet, exercise, sleep, and managing stress (which are all things I prioritize), is there anything folks can do to prevent Alzheimer's? Are there any studies or research that you know of that you could point me toward? Thank you again, Edrie https://www.wndu.com/content/news/The-good-side-of-nicotine-for-Alzheimers-patients-567810531.html#:~:text=%22And%20nicotine%20can%20help%20imitate,improvements%20in%20attention%20and%20memory. The End of Alzheimer's Program 3. Ice hockey / sleep [31:47] Jator says: I have hockey practice typically 20:45-22:00 3 days a week. This is a requirement and I sleep (obviously) terrible on those nights, also shows objectively on my Oura ring. Not in a place ready to give up hockey BUT would love your thoughts on how to mitigate the stress response as much as possible to catch a decent night of sleep. Thank you for considering Huberman Lab - Science of Muscle Growth, Increasing Strength & Muscular Recovery 4. BPPV [37:22] Carla says: I have recurring BPPV. I am wondering if you have any suggestions in terms of diet and exercise that will help with this condition? I have asked my doctor and she says I just have to live with it. I have done the Epley maneuver several times which gives me temporary relief but nothing lasting. I am a 51 yo female and about 30 lbs overweight. Any insight you could provide would be welcome. Thank you for all you do!! Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo 5. Imodium [39:56] Tom says: I've heard you talk about low dose Imodium to help with loose stools. I take 1/2 of a pill each morning, which is 1/4 of a dose. Are there any long term side effects to this. Have recently switched to carnivore due to unresolved issues with Keto. Did the keto masterclass last year and saw great improvements, thanks for that and the content you put out on the regular. Tom-Full Time RVer. Today's guest is Dr. Dale Bredesen - an expert in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease. He wrote a groundbreaking book and New York Times bestseller that you probably have already heard of : The End of Alzheimer's (2017) and then several years later wrote a follow up book: The End of Alzheimer's Program (2020). And just several weeks ago he published a new book called “The First Survivors of Alzheimer's: How Patients Recovered Life and Hope in Their Own Words”. This is a great book to hear first hand real stories of people who have reversed their Alzheimer's diagnosis. Dr. Bredesen is a professor at UCLA, but he has also taught at UC San Francisco and the University of California San Diego. He directed the Program on Aging at the Burnham Institute before coming to the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in 1998 as its founding president and CEO. Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative condition where we have a progressive decline in cognitive function, like thinking and reasoning. People with Alzheimer's are eventually unable to do any activities of daily living, simple things like bathing, driving and dressing. It's the most common form of dementia in people over the age of 65; about one in 10 people over 65 has Alzheimer's disease, but if you're a woman, your risk is 1 in 5. Nearly half of all people over age 85 are affected by Alzheimer's. That's 50%! What's crazy is that almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer's are women. So we explore why this is with Dr. Bredesen today and what we can do to lower our risk. Most doctors and experts in this field say there is no cure for Alzheimer's. But Dr. Bredesen blatantly says that Alzheimer's is absolutely 100% reversible and preventable. He is going against the grain with his research, which he has been working on for decades. He's been consulting patients and getting results with his ReCODE protocol, while traditional treatments haven't. Most everyone knows of a cancer survivor. But, by and large, when a person receives a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, it is often assumed that this is an indication of an almost certain outcome. Alzheimer's disease is not caused by a specific flaw. While energy deficiency, inflammation, infectious agents, beta amyloid, acetylcholine deficiency, trauma, toxins, metabolic issues, and genetics are all worthy of consideration, it is clearly myopic to consider that targeting one of these popular ideas is going to solve the problem. It doesn't. Our guest today has taken a different approach. Rather than trying to find a unique drug or technique that can help the Alzheimer's population at large, this novel approach focuses on identifying how variations in multiple parameters can be targeted with the overall goal of improving brain functionality that is compromised in the developing Alzheimer's situation. This approach, a personalized medicine approach, directly challenges the notion of a one-size-fits-all mentality as it relates to treating medical problems. And to be sure, Dr. Bredesen is demonstrating incredible success not just in stabilizing Alzheimer's patients but actually in bringing about their improvement. This is revolutionary, and I urge you to pay close attention to his message today. Dr. Bredesen received his undergraduate degree from Caltech and his medical degree from Duke. He served as Resident and Chief Resident in Neurology at UCSF, then was postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Nobel laureate Prof. Stanley Prusiner. He was a faculty member at UCLA from 1989-1994, then was recruited by the Burnham Institute to direct the Program on Aging. In 1998 he became the Founding President and CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, and Adjunct Professor at UCSF; then in 2013 he returned to UCLA as the Director of the Easton Center for Alzheimer's Disease Research. The Bredesen Laboratory studies basic mechanisms underlying the neurodegenerative process, and the translation of this knowledge into effective therapeutics for Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions, leading to the publication of over 220 research papers. He established the ADDN (Alzheimer's Drug Development Network) with Dr. Varghese John in 2008, leading to the identification of new classes of therapeutics for Alzheimer's disease. He and his group developed a new approach to the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, and this approach led to the discovery of subtypes of Alzheimer's disease, followed by the first description of reversal of symptoms in patients with MCI and Alzheimer's disease, with the ReCODE (reversal of cognitive decline) protocol, published in 2014, 2016, and 2018. Dr. Bredesen is the author of the New York Times bestseller, The End of Alzheimer's, and the newly released, The End of Alzheimer's Program. His newest book, The First Survivors of Alzheimer's, chronicles how this program has virtually rewritten the lives of so many, and reveals, from the patient's perspective, what this has meant. Here's a link to his latest research paper showing improvement in an astounding 80% of Alzheimer's patients.
Today we're joined by Dale Bredesen, MD, a pioneer in brain health research and an internationally recognized expert on the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. His career has been guided by a simple idea: that Alzheimer's as we know it is not just preventable, but reversible. Dr. Bredesen's research explains the physical mechanism behind the erosion of memory seen in Alzheimer's disease, and has opened the door to new approaches to treatment. His work has placed him at the vanguard of neurological research, leading to the discoveries that today underlie the ReCODE Protocol. He put much of his findings and research into the best selling books "The End of Alzheimer's," "The End of Alzheimer's Program," and "The First Survivors of Alzheimer's: How Patients Recovered Life and Hope in Their Own Words Paperback." Dr. Bredesen earned his MD from Duke University Medical Center and served as Chief Resident in Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), before joining Nobel laureate Stanley Prusiner's laboratory at UCSF as an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow. He held faculty positions at UCSF, UCLA, and the University of California, San Diego.
