Episode 122 features a conversation that Josh had with Andrew "Thorp" King on March 9th. Many of our listeners will be familiar with the tremendous output that Andy has had with Thorp Records and Sailor's Grave Records over the last two decades. Andy discussed with Josh how he put the book together. While covering the five rules of failure in his book, Andy keeps things interesting by connecting these rules to pop culture icons as well as many people from the hardcore community. The experience of failure sucks - often resulting in depression, self-loathing and identity crisis. But if you follow the rules of failure—seeing beyond the mess and picking through the good stuff left in life's shit heap of life's catastrophes — you can bounce forward from failure into success. Embrace the F-word and let hard times make you stronger. Because after it sucks, FAILURE RULES! SOME OF THE VITAL TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ONE…What made you choose the five failures that you included in this book? How did your role as record producer for punk rock enter into your journey from failure to success? How difficult was it for you to come to the decision to pursue a job you love rather than one that made sense financially? What is your biggest piece of advice for people whose fear is holding them back from taking the leap towards their passion? How important is it for entrepreneurs to have back up plans whenever they embark on their pursuits? How long did it take you to shift your mindset and view failures in the way you do now? What role does humor play during the low moments of experiencing failure? What does being authentic, even in the face of failure, mean to you? Can you think of a time where you really leaned into your failure instead of letting the negativity of it consume you?About Dr. John's Guest:Andrew Thorp King is an executive fintech banker, spy novelist, speaker, punk rocker, podcaster, ex-bodybuilder, cigar lover, and serial entrepreneur. HI, I'M ANDREW THORP KING… I'm also a serial failure. I've crashed and burned through bankruptcy… Been through hell and back in a divorce… Went through a mortgage default, needed public assistance, and failed at more businesses than I can remember. But I don't tell you any of this to gain your sympathy. Nope, I tell you this because I know that after it first sucks, FAILURE RULES!…and you need to understand this too… Because although the experience and immediate, tangible results of failure SUCK…If you learn the rules of failure and see beyond failure's immediate mess, you can turn failure into your greatest asset and move forward into success. After I hit rock bottom in my professional life and then my personal life I discovered there were rules to failure that anyone can use to turn the pain of failure into their secret recipe for success. Since then, I've been a fintech banker, entrepreneur, novelist, bodybuilder, founder of two independent record labels, and now a purveyor of Failure Wisdom for Entrepreneurs, Creatives, and Authentic's. For the past two decades, I've fulfilled mentorship roles in multiple leadership capacities across many spaces as an entrepreneur and a corporate executive. Now, I coach people on how to identify the North Star Pursuit of their Calling Journey and the main areas of friction holding them back from aligning with that Calling Journey. In this, I help people dig deep to work through complicated obstacles and ultimately turn their failures into their greatest successes with a detailed, curated action plan. And today, you can learn, first hand, all the principles I use to coach my clients (without paying for all the coaching fees!) in my latest book FAILURE RULES!: The 5 Rules of Failure for Entrepreneurs, Creatives, and Authentic's. ⚡ Connect with Andrew: https://www.instagram.com/andrewthorpking/ | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLRJqrHRDoc0gh-kZuKo9rg | https://twitter.com/andrewthorpking ⚡ Connect with Greg Witz: witzeducation.com | LinkedIn | Instagram | Twitter | FacebookCheck out our betterLEADER Program: https://www.witzeducation.com/betterleaderGreg's sole mission in life is to challenge all of us to be better. Thorp Records and Sailor's Grave Records founder Andrew Thorp King is on the podcast today. Andrew's experience running multiple record companies, body building, spy novel writing, and cigar aficionado experience led him to write his latest book, FAILURE RULES: The 5 Rules of Failure for Entrepreneurs, Creatives, and Authentics. We talk about how Andrew has marketed the book and has adapted to the marketplace with it, dive deep into Rule 2 (Nothing is Safe), talk about why the mosh pit is the perfect example for life, and show the practicality of Rule #4 (Build your Thing One and Thing Two Dependency). Failure rules if you know how to use it, and this is the perfect podcast to understand that. Do you believe that you have what it takes to be successful, but your fear of failure holds you back? It took me a long time to learn how to be successful; and I didn't learn from the book of success. Rather, I learned from lessons that came out of the books of fear and failure. I went from feeling like I wasn't good enough and shying away from going after what I wanted in life, to becoming a dragon slayer. I learned how to fight fear and failure. You see, growing up I dreamed of travelling the world as an entertainer. But because I never thought I was good enough, I spent most of my time just dreaming about it, admiring others' success, and never really taking a bold step. I kept thinking…“when I do “x” (i.e., get better, have more money, find the perfect time), I'll go for it.” But, as time passed with little to no action, I became discouraged. I felt sad and deflated. One day, however, I saw something. It was like someone threw gas on my struggling flame inside. My life would never be the same. The combustion was so powerful that I set out on a mission to do whatever it takes to succeed. But here's the thing…my success didn't come easy. There were so many challenges. That spark propelled me and gave me the determination, but it was learning to fight through my failures that brought me success. I went from believing I was a loser to performing on stages all around the world and being inducted into the Hall of Fame of a little known, but prestigious performance group! But here's the thing…I wasn't the best, I wasn't a great talent, my struggles were many and hard. So why was I successful? I learned some crucial lessons about becoming successful and for me it came down to understanding how to overcome failure. From this new mindset, I started to see more wins and ultimately more success and fulfilment. But what about you? What is the success, the goal, the life you want, but are too afraid to go after it? And how will you deal with failure along the way? How can you leverage your fear of failure to be an advantage? That's what this episode is all about. You will learn to embrace the “suck”, be resilient, and about the 5 crucial rules to success, by way of failure. In this episode you will learn: - The 5 rules of failure - How to embrace the “suck” and let hard times make you stronger. - How to be resilient - How to use failure to catapult you forward to success. It's like, it's just that, you know, it's, it's the flames just burning, you know, it's like the Phoenix needs to burn to emerge, you know, sure.” - Andrew Thorp King “There's this emptiness, there's hunger, there's, there's lack of meaning in their life, because they didn't learn how to marry money with meaning necessarily, they got the money thing, right. And now they have the time, and they have the money, but they don't really know what to do to have that meaning in their life.” - Andrew Thorp King *** We hope you enjoyed this episode of The Nicholas Gregoriades Show!
