Andy Vargas, acclaimed successor to the throne of Latino soul music in the U.S., has been making waves in the music industry for over two decades. As Santana's lead vocalist since 2000, he has collaborated with musical titans such as Juanes, Mana, Chris Perez, Frankie J, The Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce, and Enrique Iglesias. Given his first shot by legendary producer and managers Terry Melcher, Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys, and Lou Adler, Andy inked a record deal at the age of 16 to Ron Fair at RCA, BMG. Here, he wrote and recorded Pop, Latin funk, and R&B Soul music. This caught the interest of Clive Davis and Carlos Santana, who asked him to support the worldwide smash “Supernatural” record. Vargas has crafted a unique music genre, earning him widespread recognition and acclaim. He has also expanded his professional reach by co-founding Malaspalabras Records (MPR) alongside acclaimed comedian George Lopez and music distribution giant, United Masters. MPR is committed to safeguarding artists' rights and launching fresh talents in both conventional distribution and the evolving Web3 arena. This year marks a significant milestone in Andy's journey as a musician. He has earned solo recognition, securing a coveted spot among the illustrious lineup of the Dave Koz Friends at Sea Cruise. For two weeks of musical bliss sailing through the Mediterranean, he'll share the stage with fellow superstar musicians, promising an unforgettable experience for all aboard.% But Andy's musical odyssey doesn't end there. He's set to join his mentor, the legendary Carlos Santana, and the Santana Band for the 2024 Oneness tour, featuring the iconic Counting Crows. This collaboration with musical giants is a testament to Andy's talent and unwavering dedication to his craft. Beyond his musical pursuits, Vargas is dedicated to giving back. In 2015, he founded The Andy Vargas Foundation (AVF), a non-profit organization with a mission to inspire, mentor, and educate underprivileged youth with dreams of making it in the music industry. AVF offers a host of free community programs, such as instrument training, vocal coaching, music composition and production workshops, music business courses, and college scholarships. Amidst these grand ventures, Andy remains deeply connected to his roots, finding solace and joy in performing on his favorite local So Cal stages, Spaghettini in Seal Beach and Herb Alpert's Vibrato, throughout the year. Here, amidst the cozy ambiance and intimate setting, he shares his gift with fans, creating moments of magic that linger long after the last note fades. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matt-brown57/support

Born in Buffalo NY, his father wore two hats as pianist and conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He would seat Dave in the orchestra pit during performances as early as seven years old. Dave's brother Robert would soon become a multiple Grammy-nominated classical percussionist, and his sister an accomplished rock/soul singer. Shortly after his father's passing when Dave was 10, he suddenly took an interest in the piano that was sitting idly in the living room. Osmosis? Within six months Dave had mastered the C Sonata by Mozart, and began an obsession with XTC, Herbie Hancock, Yes, Todd Rundgren and of course, DEVO. Pretty diverse for an 11 year old. He clearly made the right choice. By the age of 17, he was one of the top keyboardists in his hometown, winning multiple awards consistently for seven years. Finally the big break came, when Robby Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls called and left a simple message from sunny LA: “you wanna come out and tour with us for a year?” In a matter of one day Dave went from playing in front of 300 in a local Buffalo bar to playing Woodstock in front of 65000. This led to a two-and-a-half year relationship with the Goo Goo Dolls that took Dave around the world twice as touring keyboardist/vocalist for the “Dizzy Up The Girl” tour, the landmark album that spawned five top ten singles between 98 and 2000. visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and moreIn the early 1980s, when percussionist extraordinaire JUAN ESCOVEDO was in his early 20s, he was working for his cousin as a landscaper at different homes around the Bay Area, CA. However, he also just so happened to be in heavy rotation on the then-very-popular MTV, appearing as part of his sister Sheila E's band in the video for her smash hit “Glamorous Life” along with their siblings Zina and Peter Michael. The song got played so much that people started to recognize Juan while he was mowing lawns, though he felt too awkward to admit that it was him. It got to the point where he called his sis, talking bout: “Sheila, everybody's noticing me now because of the video. You gotta hire me.”As it turned out, the request wasn't unwarranted. In fact, Sheila's mentor and co-producer PRINCE had already been scratching his chin regarding her live show, trying to figure how he could get her to step out from behind the timbales and take the mic center stage. Having another percussionist who could recreate her patterns onstage would be ideal. So Juan got the gig! And like a true Escovedo, he not only knew how to navigate life as a hired gun, but also how to keep getting called back. “You never want to overplay to where they tell you ‘Shut up,'” he explains. “Or ‘Be quiet' or ‘You're playing too much.' I'd rather somebody say ‘Can you give me more?'”These days, Juan's musical journey has reached its apotheosis with the release of his first solo album, The J, a crowning achievement that has been a long time coming. Co-written with Michael “Angel” Alverado, the album features Martin Kember of Color Me Badd, Andy Vargas of Santana, Juan's longtime pal El DeBarge, and of course the “E” Family. In this engaging and heart-filled interview, Juan recounts his early love for the trumpet, explains why he used to be called “Goldie,” and describes how they put together those amazing outfits he wore while touring with Prince. Juan also reveals his thoughts on recording with a click track, explains why he has a standing invitation to play with El DeBarge any time he comes to town, and discusses working with kids through Elevate Oakland, a program intended to bring music back to public schools.visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more

8/12/20-- This week on Gateways, Ben checks in with state Rep. Andy Vargas on the unorthodox end of the legislative session. With the deadline for major policymaking extended from July 31 through the end of the year, Rep. Vargas provides a look back on the session thus far and what’s on the horizon. A police reform bill has not yet been passed, but with the elements currently in conference committees, Vargas is optimistic that it will be resolved soon and is pleased with how it came together. “There’s a commitment from both chambers and the governor to get something done,” he says. Vargas would also like to see an amendment expanding expungement opportunities in the final version of the bill. “If not, we’ll certainly be fighting next session.” One opportunity that Vargas urges school districts not to miss is a federal school nutrition program. The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) provides universal free breakfast and lunch to every student in school districts in low-income areas. Vargas says it’s been a “huge success” in the city of Haverhill where it was implemented. As Ben points out, 97% of Gateway City students attend schools where over 40% of the students are economically disadvantaged. “So basically, every Gateway City student could benefit from this,” Ben says. The deadline to apply for CEP is August 31. --- As school districts across the commonwealth develop and announce reopening plans, parents are grappling with a whole host of anxieties. Some of these stem from what’s been described as a lack of sufficient communication. Two leaders at Massachusetts Parents United, Keri Rodrigues and Natasha Megie-Maddrey, join us to talk about this. Rodrigues, the founder of Massachusetts Parents United and the president of National Parents Union, says that while school districts have held virtual meetings between faculty and parents, “Whether or not they’ve been listening is a horse of a different color.” Some school districts have announced an all-remote start to the school year, which requires a lot of effort on the part of parents, who are turning to fellow community members to form their own systems or “microschools,” wherein families come together, coordinate their schedules, and pool their resources. This form of schooling is getting broader attention now, but “microschools” and “homeschool pods” are nothing new, Rodrigues says. “I know that that’s the fancy way that rich white folks are now calling these things, but this has been what poor Black and brown folks have done forever.” Massachusetts Parents United is encouraging these co-ops by providing $200,000 worth of direct grants to parents and families. In building these community homeschool pods, families are taking the opportunity to customize their childrens’ learning. Grant applications have expressed a desire to adhere to the district’s curriculum but also provide a supplemental Afro-centric curriculum, Latino cultural lessons, Spanish lessons, or music lessons. Others have asked for money to pay for desks or sensory toys, or to hire a special education paraprofessional. The deadline for applications is August 15.
Following on the success of its Dollar-for-Dollar Gift Card program for restaurants, the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce is helping retailers give customers 25 percent off future purchases. The “#HaverhillLocal” program is open to Haverhill stores whether or not they are members of the Haverhill Chamber. The group will reimburse participating businesses 25% of total purchase prices, up to $100 per customer. For example, stores may sell a $100 gift card for only $75. Appearing live Friday on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program, state Rep. Andy X. Vargas said the initiative is similar to what is being offered to restaurant owners.“We're going to launch that program again today for small businesses that aren't restaurants so we will include retail as well which is having a tough time as you can imagine not being able to sell anything,” he said.Haverhill Chamber President Dougan Sherwood added, like the restaurant program, people are being asked to contribute online at GoFundMe.com to help pay for the retail plan. Participating businesses will be listed at haverhillchamber.com.Vargas says the takeout, delivery or gift card program so far has matched nearly $30,000 and “translated into some hope” for eateries. “The good news is that they can really feel and appreciate the support of the Haverhill community that has rallied around them.”Vargas used the opportunity to also warn people about unreliable news sources. “We did say make sure that you're subscribing to your local news at this time, including WHAV, of course, because part of the challenge with this pandemic is that folks are getting their information from sources that aren't always accurate,” he said. The state representative helped Greater Haverhill's only public radio station make its pitch.“Special thanks to all of the folks at WHAV for keeping local news going. For anyone listening, please consider being a supporter of WHAV. They do fantastic work and at this time it is so important to have verified sources particularly at the local level,” he concluded.Support the show (https://whav.net/become-a-whav-member/)

Loretta McNary Live is a premier blog talk radio show created for an empowered, active, and diverse TV, radio, social media and online listening audience. LML uses a progressive live call in format to target an ever expanding market of online listeners wanting an impressive menu of meaningful, and authentic conversations. Our guest today is Patrick Martin, CEO, YB Limited. YB Limited is a fashion watch and accessory brand for professionals and is centered on the philosophy of unlimited possibilities. The brand that has become synonymous with luxury and elegance was founded in 2005 by Paul Youngblood and Patrick Martin as Youngblood Timepieces, Inc., a small company that developed unique blueprints for fashionable wristwatches—combining style, creativity and sophistication for the elite urban market. YB Limited launched its Limited Edition ROSE GOLD collection of signature men and women fashion watches. The brand does not stop there, as it further expands their platform beyond watches to include exclusive designer hoodies and scarves, both for men and women. Paying it forward is a critical component of YB Limited as the vision goes beyond becoming an international brand. Founder and CEO Patrick Martin was inspired by Hill Harper’s book, the Wealth Cure and as a result launched Ybelieve, the fundraising platform of the company. Ybelieve teams up with select non-profits to bring awareness to their missions and visions by co-branding and marketing through visibility on the company’s website and financially by donating 100% of net proceeds that are generated at partner non-profit events. A few of the selected non-profits include Hill Harper’s Manifest Your Destiny, Oakland’s K to College, and The Milagro Foundation supported by Andy Vargas of Carlos Santana Band. Each of these organizations share a common mission with their commitment to children's health and education.
