Does healthcare deliver for patients? Insights from OECD's PaRIS initiative

OECD

Play Episode Listen Later May 12, 2025 28:00

For far too long, healthcare performance indicators have centred on inputs—like funding and infrastructure—or processes—like hospital admissions or waiting times—without adequately capturing the experiences and outcomes of the people receiving care. The OECD's PaRIS Survey upends that dynamic, shining a light on how older people with chronic conditions feel about their care, how healthy they really feel, and how their everyday lives are affected. The latest figures are now out: with over 107K patients in over 1800 primary care practices across 19 countries, the survey highlights that living longer doesn't always mean living better, especially if care experiences are poor and chronic conditions aren't managed in a way that reflects patients needs. In this episode of the Behind the Numbers podcast, our host Ashley Ward is joined by OECD Health Economists Frederico Guanais and Michael van den Berg to explore the work behind this innovative survey. Learn how policymakers, healthcare providers, and patients themselves can use these data to drive more people-centred healthcare. Host Ashley Ward, Director's Office Advisor and Communications Manager (OECD Statistics and Data Directorate) Guests Frederico Guanais, Deputy Head of Health Division (OECD Directorate for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs) Michael van den Berg, Senior Health Economist (OECD Directorate for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs) To learn more about policy area: https://www.oecd.org/en/about/programmes/patient-reported-indicator-surveys-paris.html To learn more about the OECD, our global reach, and how to join us, go to www.oecd.org/en/about.html To keep up with latest at the OECD, visit www.oecd.org/ Get the latest OECD content delivered directly to your inbox! On a daily basis, we're faced with a deluge of online content, only swelling further with the mainstreaming of generative AI and rising political polarisation. Improving our joint understanding of how people consume news, and how effectively they distinguish between fact and fiction, is one of the key challenges of our time. The OECD Truth Quest Survey implements an innovative methodology to answer this question. With over 40,000 respondents across 21 countries, the survey provides unprecedented insights into media literacy and its implications for global policy making. In this episode of Behind the Numbers, our host Ashley Ward is joined by OECD Head of Digital Connectivity, Economics and Society Molly Lesher to discuss the dangers of misinformation, overcoming measurement challenges, and the survey results so far. Explore the work behind this innovative survey and learn how policymakers can use this data to create targeted strategies to fight misinformation. Most people know Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as the go to number to evaluate an economy's performance. It is often referenced in the news, sometimes directly, other times implied in discussions of economic recession, recovery or boom. But other indicators, further removed from the limelight, are also vital for economic analysis: for example, Household Disposable Income (HDI) helps us to monitor changes in money that households have available to either spend or save for the future. How do human senses compare to those of animals? In what ways are they similar, how are they different, and how do they help us make sense of the world?Ashley Ward is a Professor of Animal Behavior at the University of Sydney, Australia, and also the author of several books about animal behavior. His latest book is titled Where We Meet the World: The Story of the Senses.Ashley and Greg discuss the complex labyrinth of sensory perceptions, illuminating how vision, taste, and smell can shape our understanding of the world. Ashley dissects the extraordinary ways animals and plants detect threats and communicate, the surprising power of smell in social insect communication, and interesting theories about the evolution of human behaviors like kissing and hand-shaking. They dive into animal behavior and group decision-making, including swarm intelligence and the dynamics of animal hierarchies in this fascinating exploration of animal behavior and sensory experiences.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Can we train ourselves to smell fear and excitement?08:53: So, there's a huge value to interacting directly with other people, and an awful lot of cues are provided that go beyond the visual and hearing when we communicate by language. As to whether we can smell fear and excitement, the evidence suggests that we do produce different chemicals when we are in an aroused emotional state, such as when we're terrified by something or when we're thrilled about something. And those kinds of subtle cues can be collected by other animals. Dogs are an obvious example. And we might think that we're simply not capable of this. Our sense of smell, let's say, is not sophisticated enough to pick it up, but it does vary enormously from person to person. And there are people who have such an exquisite sense of smell that they can start to pick up these cues.Information is a vital currency to animals47:20: Information is a vital currency for all animals, and by pooling that information in whichever way, they can develop much, much better strategies. That applies to humans: If we're trying to make excellent decisions, then the best way to do that is to take a broad view of the information that's out there. Now, there are two ways of getting that information. You can either go out there and collect it all yourself, which is incredibly time-consuming. Often, in many cases, totally impossible, or you can use social information, which is readily available and relatively cheap, and as long as you get enough of it, it's very accurate. This is what the animals are doing. Decoding scents38:51: Our perception—our sensation of smell—is produced by a mosaic of different activations in the receptors. We have 400 different smell receptors, and each smell is a composite of different activation patterns. Receptor numbers 189, 157, and 14 might all be activated, giving you the smell of a tangerine. But if it's not 14, 15, then maybe that's a lemon or something. And that's the difficulty. There are so many different permutations of inputs that go into each smell. There's a very difficult matter to untangle that and find the exact right receptor activation pattern which corresponds to each different smell.Taste complexity across species43:30: The pattern is that the more carnivorous an animal is, the fewer the different kinds of tastes, the less sensitive its sense of taste is, and the more herbivorous an animal is, conversely. The more complex and sophisticated their sense of taste is. So cows have a much better sense of taste than we do. We sit somewhere in the middle. We have approximately the same complexity in our sense of taste as a pig does. We're more complex than cats and dogs. We're less complex than rabbits and cows.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Movie Theaters Smell Like People's FeelingsHand Shaking and SmellQuorum Decision-Making in Foraging Fish ShoalsConvoy battles of World War IIJack the Railway BaboonAssateague IslandBayesian inferenceSynesthesiaGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at The University of SydneyAshley Ward's WebsiteAshley Ward on LinkedInAshley Ward on XHis Work:Where We Meet the World: The Story of the SensesThe Social Lives of AnimalsQuestions and Answers on Saltwater Aquarium Fishes: Understanding Behavior for Successful FishkeepingQuestions and Answers on Freshwater Aquarium Fishes: Everything You Need to Know to Successfully Raise HealthyGoogle Scholar ArticlesResearchGate Articles

It involves breaking down these beliefs into their constituent parts, reevaluating them, and often challenging or revising them based on reason, doubt, or new perspectives. This process can lead to a shift in one's religious worldview or the abandonment of certain beliefs altogether. Over the past few decades, as trade and investment barriers have lessened, and transport and communication costs have declined, multinational enterprises or MNEs have become an increasingly important fixture in the global economy. As these entities begin to represent a larger share of global economic activity, the importance of monitoring them and understanding their behaviour has never been greater. However, MNEs cross borders by definition, making them notably difficult to keep track of at the national level. The new OECD UNSD Multinational Enterprise Information Platform gathers together data on the world's largest multinationals from a range of public sources. These data cover the geographical and digital scope of individual multinationals and an array of indicators, complementing major recent reforms to the international tax system led by the OECD and in response to the challenges arising from digitalisation. But what new benefits does this initiative deliver? What does the data reveal? And how can it be used for economic analysis? And what does this say about where the global economy is heading? This OECD Podcast aims to address these questions and more in conversation with one of our own data experts. This week, we wrap up our OGs & Young Guns Series with Amelia Ashley-Ward and Evan Ward, the owners and publishers of Northern California's oldest Black newspaper, the Sun-Reporter. The paper was founded in 1944 by Thomas C. Fleming and Dr. Carlton Goodlett to give a voice to the growing population of African-Americans in the Bay Area. It quickly became a beacon for Civil Rights activism, and served as a waypoint for prominent Black figures like Malcom X, Muhammad Ali, and the Black Panthers. Even young political figures like Jerry Brown, Willie Brown, and Art Agnos found counsel and inspiration there. An award-winning journalist herself, Amelia has carried on Dr. Goodlett's tradition with great pride and success. Through the Sun-Reporter, she's found unique ways to give exposure to the new generation of leaders in the Bay Area's Black community, helping them improve and enrich countless lives. She intends to pass this important work onto the next generation, as she is now teaching her sons to run the business. Why does the world appear different when we're in love? How can one colour make us feel anger and another calm? Why do sounds like chewing and yawning cause emotional distress for some people? Aristotle said that there were five senses but scientific research suggests that there could be many more than that, with some studies claiming that there are up to 52. On this episode we're joined by Ashley Ward, Professor in Animal Behaviour at the University of Sydney. In discussion with zoologist and broadcaster Lucy Cooke, he explores some of the fascinating findings in his brand new book, Sensational: A New Story of Our Senses, and the mechanisms at the heart of how we navigate the world. ... Our senses are at the heart of how we navigate the world - coalescing in any moment, in any combination, to varying degrees, to relay what is going on around us and within us. But when you stop to think about the level of complexity involved in making sense of all of this in your brain - it really is quite astonishing. That being said, are we guilty of doing our senses a disservice by reducing their scope to just five? Is there more to it than just smell, sight, taste, touch, and hearing? If so, what are the other ways we sense the world and what function do they serve? Ashley Ward is a professor in Animal Behaviour at the University of Sydney & author of ‘Sensational: A New Story of Our Senses' - he joins Jonathan to discuss.
