A personal note about Dan Kneece (RIP) from your OWC RADiO Host, Cirina Catania. "The world lost a wonderful person last week. Dan Kneece was loved by all of us in the entertainment industry. He worked tirelessly and with a great attitude. Ask Dan what is most important and he would say, "I work for the script and the director." Words are hard to find right now, but I wanted to share this interview I did with him back in July of 2019. May you find the love in it and may it help you to savor every moment of your lives. Because every day counts, and the friends you leave behind will remember you for how you made them feel and in Dan's case, also what they learned from you." (Cirina Catania, August 25, 2021) Dan Kneece On Set (Courtesy Dan Kneece) Cinematographer Dan Kneece worked with some of the world's most iconic directors, including David Lynch, Wes Craven, Quentin Tarantino, and Joel Schumacher. But did you know that he was an award-winning musician, that he comes from a very small town in the American south, that he has worked on more than one movie simultaneously, traveling across the country to meet deadlines with no sleep, and that his favorite camera is… nope, no spoiler alerts. I am speaking today with Dan Kneece, who was a longtime Steadicam operator and now a cinematographer. We call them DPs in our business. And, Dan, I'm so happy to talk to you on the air because you're just a rarity in this town. And welcome to the show. Thank you very much for having me. We have so much to talk about. Let's just start almost at the beginning, and I like asking people what they liked to do when they were 5, 6, 7 years old. What were you like as a little boy, and what was life for you growing up? I grew up in the small town of Black Hill, South Carolina. It had a population of about 2000 people and was surrounded by swamps and alligators, and it's 10 miles from Barnwell, South Carolina, where James Brown was born. In 14 miles, another side of that is a little town called Allendale, where Jasper Johns grew up. I think what really happened in the area, people are saying this must have been something in the water. But I think really, what happens is so darn boring down there that if you have a creative urge, you got to figure out a way to get it out, or you're going to go nuts. You need time to be creative. And I think in a busy life in the cities,
In episode 29 of the Investing in Impact podcast, we speak with Dan Miller, Founder and CEO of Steward on creating an innovative online lending platform that helps fund the growth of regenerative agriculture for the next generation of regenerative farmers.Dan Miller is the Founder and CEO of Steward, a private lender providing regenerative farmers, ranchers, fishermen, and producers the capital they need to expand and sustain their businesses. And through our innovative online platform, qualified lenders have the opportunity to join in our mission and help fund the growth of regenerative agriculture by purchasing loan participations. It's really that simple.Steward's story begins with its founder and CEO, Dan Miller. Ask Dan what inspired him to create Steward, and he'll tell you about early mornings spent crabbing with his father on the Chesapeake Bay.This was the experience that rooted him to the land, but it was a meeting with a well-known chef in Dan's hometown, Washington D.C., that would plant the idea of Steward in his mind. This chef spoke of the difficulties facing the independent farmers that supplied his restaurant: the more specialized the farms were, the harder it was to get a loan.Dan felt that instead of forcing farmers to fit within a box, it should be the other way around. So he committed himself to creating a system that empowers each unique farmer to steward their land sustainably, with consumers—the people with the most to gain from sustainable farming—having the opportunity to join in their success. After graduating from the Wharton School with a B.S. and M.B.A., Dan co-founded a pioneering investment crowdfunding business called Fundrise. In 2010, it was the first and largest real estate crowdfunding platform in the United States, and has since raised more than $500 million. It's this experience, combined with a passion for agriculture, ecology, and local food that led Dan to launching Steward in 2017.Listen to more Causeartist podcasts here.Check out the Impact Investor platform here - Discover Impact Investors from around the world. We are powered by:Podcast Made with TransistorPodcast cover design Made with CanvaBuild amazing web platforms with Webflow

It's the human voice that can start a riot and welcome love. It can say 'you're hired' and 'it's over.' As a creative business owner, maybe you've had moments when you don't feel heard. And you want to walk into a room with a voice people want to listen to. Let's explore how to do just that! Upspeak is a way of speaking, which goes up at the end. And according to a study by Pearson, a UK publisher, 85% of managers found the trait of upspeak as a clear indicator of uncertainty or weakness. The opposite? Speaking with a different type of tone. I've received a question from a fellow ENFP, Judy, a Syrian living in the Netherlands for the past 3 years. She says she picked up the language pretty quickly and started her Bachelor's degree this year, which was great, but there is a problem: "Everywhere I go, I find myself feeling like an outsider. It's such a shame that I barely interact or hang out with my classmates or roommates unless I'm drunk because I'm insecure about my Dutch and it makes me appear as less friendly, but silent and distant. Which is, of course, a nightmare for an ENFP. Aside from that, I can't relate or be engaged with most subjects that are brought up in a typical conversation and the Dutch are really distant people and difficult to approach unless they're drunk. So I truly miss the Syrian spontaneity in everything. When I use English, though, I am way more open, can have fun conversations easily and express myself way better and just be myself. The only problem is it is really awkward to start speaking English out of nowhere with everyone and it is not very beneficial for learning Dutch. So do you have a tip for me to be myself, communicate better with native speakers, and use a new language?" Homesteady - Stories of homesteading farming hunting and fishing
Sometimes the most obvious way of solving a problem is not the best way. On this episode of Homesteady, we explore our most valuable non-renewable resource: time. Beginning with the story of the Village on the Hill, we see that looking outside the box for a different solution may be the best way for us to achieve our goals. In part two of our ten part Homestead Business Series (miss part one? Listen here ) we head to North Idaho to meet Dan Ohmann on his grassfed homestead. How did this police-officer-turned-stay-at-home-dad-and-farmer do it? On the surface, we see a couple and a child living on a homestead raising lamb and pastured poultry. Dan's spouse still works a traditional job in the software industry, and they gross approximately $2,250 from their meaty side hustle. Like so many of us, the arrival of his first child inspired Dan and his wife to escape their HOA-ruled suburb for something different. Dan decided he needed to take a lot more responsibility for his resources-namely, food, and increasing food security and self-sufficiency. (An aside-food security is an incredibly weighty and important topic. Learn more here.) Dan's explorations led him to the concept of permaculture. Designing sustainable systems using the natural resources that are available led him to Geoff Lawton's work. "The primary goal of permaculture is to provide a permanence of culture on the earth for people and all living things." -Geoff Lawton So, what is permaculture, anyway? It is an amalgamation of social and agricultural systems that, like most things, is best defined by Wikipedia. Dan experienced a paradigm shift in watching Geoff Lawton's permaculture videos and taking his online permaculture course. Dan realized that like so many of us, he had designed his life according to the socially accepted success formula- good grades+ good college= good job, good money, good life. The permaculture model not only shifted Dan's thinking about sustainable agriculture, but showed him that he could apply these same principles to design a lifestyle that deviated from the acceptable success formula. Why? There has been a growing awareness though that firstly, there is the need to pay more attention to the peoplecare ethic, as it is often the dynamics of people that can interfere with projects, and secondly that the principles of permaculture can be used as effectively to create vibrant, healthy and productive people and communities as they have been in landscapes. (Wikipedia 2018) When Dan's son ran into health problems that were directly related to his diet, that was the final push he needed to start figuring out how to provide what he needed for his family himself. They were able to make a big change, and leave their home in suburban Atlanta when his wife got a big promotion at work where she received a large pay raise and could work remotely. Leaving the police force was a difficult transition for Dan. It was his entire career: he had worked his way through the ranks for many years. This was a meaningful job for Dan, with real value in serving his community, and he knew that he had continued career growth with his department. However, North Idaho was calling, with the land and lifestyle that Dan and his wife wanted for their family. After a two year search for the right property was finally completed, Dan started developing his homestead right away. Sheep were delivered less than 48 hours after move-in day, and they were off! Currently, they are in their second season of raising animals, with a focus on grassfed lamb. How is Dan growing his business? Start small and with with people you know. Dan raised four lambs his first season. Sending strategic emails that resulted in a friend buying a half a lamb, Dan networked his way into selling two lambs, which left two for his family to eat. Make a marketing plan based upon on-the-ground feedback from your possible customer base. When Dan was marketing his lamb, everyone asked, "But how do you cook lamb?" With a series of YouTube cooking videos, he answered this question for his consumers. He developed these videos over the winter to share at a local food advocacy group event. In alignment with slow food principles, Dan showed his consumer where their food came from and what to do with it. Have reasonable growth expectations. Through word of mouth, Dan has sold six lambs and cut off sales. He has since been turning people away. "I can't meet the demand-yet," says Dan. Also- is the business profitable? Let's get down to brass tacks, shall we? (What does that even mean, anyway?) Aust invokes the spirit of Accountant Mike to get down to the nitty gritty dollars-and-cents with Dan. Through a value system that incorporates money as only ONE part of the value of an enterprise, however: is Dan's homestead profitable? Through a permaculture lens, yes. Despite challenges, Dan has built many different forms of capital into the value of his endeavor. Namely? Control over his life- specifically, his TIME. He values being able to schedule his work around his son. As parents, the truth of the matter is that we have to spend time on commutes, on working out of the home- time doing what I call "The Things" that take us away from our children. However, you ARE able to build your OWN system to optimize your opportunities for fulfillment. Shout out to The Survival Podcast for inspiring the story of the village on the hill. Topic - Nicknames. The only thing that everything has, is a name. When you consider a name for your child, think about the nickname that may arise from it. Nicknames given by family and friends tend to last a lifetime. If “Little Ray” is a bartender, then fine, but it's not gonna work if he's a dentist. Think about how Danny, Joey or Frankie is going to “fit” him when he's a 6 foot 2 stockbroker who's the father of three boys. Children have a tendency to live up to their names and if their names have a childish sound to them, how might that impact their lives? Will it shape how Mikey sees himself? Clearly, it's up to you as parents to give them their names, but you might want to stick with the name you gave them and see if they want a nickname as they grow older. That way, it's their choice. You may find a struggle with grandparents who persist with using nicknames and it may just have to be that way! Ask Dan if it's OK that Grandma calls him Danny. He may not mind! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drclaudia/message

We also got a very, very nice comment here on Episode 004 from Marshall Ponzi. Thank you Marshall for your kind words and you’re so right...it IS amazing what we can do without. And, I think we’d agree that doing without all the extra allows us to truly appreciate what we do have all the more. Marshall also has a terrific podcast over at InboundInFocus.com that gives great inbound marketing tips for business owners. If you’re a business owner you’d be well served to check out Marshalls podcast, Inbound In Focus, as well. Main Topics: Vanessa's Topic: The One Secret To Accomplishing Anything "I'm often asked what my secret is to being organized and how I get my clients to become more organized." The single most important component to becoming organized is commitment. So why is commitment to change so difficult? 1. It’s not a priority....at least not yet. 2. Change is hard...even when you know it’s good for you. 3. It takes a lot of work...and that can be daunting and discouraging. 4. Unfortunately, often times people have to reach some sort of “breaking point.” Vanessa highlights some of her efforts to change: Finances $24K in debt Electricity and phone cut off Creditors hounding her for payments. Fitness 40 lbs heavier than her current weight Combined, the struggles led to: Low self esteem Depression Low energy Keys to her commitment to change: Stopped playing the victim Committed to a lifestyle change vs “quick fix” Results? Paid off debt in 2 years Rebuilt credit score Kept the weight off Better level of fitness than in high school (20 years ago! Wow! She’s OLD!) Vanessa’s Truths: Truly believes “If I can do it, so can you!” One key is to be realistic about the change you want to make...and understand that it’s a process...not a quick fix. Be patient, systematic and strategic...otherwise you might do something you’ll regret or resent. One positive example is a blog she subscribes to, “Becoming Minimalist” by Joshua Becker. I like the word...Becoming...because it implies that it’s a process. So, here are some points to ponder if you are thinking about making a change in your life: 1. Change your mindset...it’s a lifestyle change not a quick fix. Just like my progress with weight loss and fitness. 2. Change doesn’t happen overnight. 3. Realize that you may get discouraged at the task ahead. But don’t sell yourself short. You can do it! Again, think of it as a process and break it down into bite-sized chunks. (organize one space at a time...pay off one bill at a time...try one eating lifestyle or fitness plan at a time) 4. Realize that you may “fall of the wagon” and that maintaining your lifestyle may be difficult. Pick yourself back up, and hop back on the wagon! 5. Once you get in the groove, you’re probably going to get addicted! Ask Dan...I can be a real grouch if I've missed a few workouts and if my house gets too cluttered. That's because I've gotten addicted to the results and love how they make me feel. Feeling comfortable in my clothing and in my home are incredibly elating. You'll feel the same once you get in the groove. These are healthy addictions in my opinion. 6. You'll start to build confidence! And reduce stress. You won’t have those negative thoughts lingering around in your mind. Instead you’ll be thinking about taking the next step...decreasing your debt further....
