Barry Eisler, whose latest novel is “The Killer Collective,” in conversation with Richard Wolinsky. The author of fifteen novels in the thriller genre, plus short stories and essays, Barry Eisler is an attorney who spent three years working in the CIA before realizing he did not want a career in a government bureaucracy. Most of his novels feature a mixed race Asian/Caucasian assassin named Rain. Two other characters, a black ops specialist named Ben Treven and a Seattle detective named Livia Lone, also appear in various books. All three characters come together in “The Killer Collective,” which examines a government cover-up in the Secret Service, and outsourcing involving a mercenary army similar to Erik Prince's company (formerly known as Blackwater). In this interview, Barry Eisler discusses his career as a writer, secrecy in government, how he builds his novels, along with his use of technological extrapolation, which often pans out in real life. Even those of us who believe that the internet is overall a tremendous positive force when it comes to discourse and culture can admit that, in many parts of the online world, having constructive and substantive conversations is... difficult. And that issue has most certainly come to the fore in the last couple of years. So this week, we're joined by author Barry Eisler (one of our first and most frequent podcast guests) to tackle the challenge of framing important debates in productive ways, and actually getting somewhere with them.

On episode 24 of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, Ryan speaks with Chris Garetano about his lifelong search for answers to the Montauk Project, said to have been carried out at Camp Hero on Long Island, NY. The government claims that this site is a shuttered military base that once protected Americans, but for decades endless rumors maintain that the United States government engaged in a pattern of covert behavior that saw it experiment on its own citizens in such programs as the Tuskegee Experiments and MK Ultra. Could Montauk’s Camp Hero–with its rumors of mind control experiments, acid tests, child abductions, possible alien contact, and time travel have any truth behind it? Chris is a filmmaker who released a documentary in 2015 titled, THE MONTAUK CHRONICLES, which covered these very rumors and accusations by those who claimed to have been there. Some admitted having participated in the experiments while some even claimed to have been those experimented on. The film was then expanded on in a recent History Channel special called THE DARK FILES. With a thorough investigation by Steve Volk, Barry Eisler, and Chris himself, they unravel the mystery one witness at a time and find stunning evidence that the Montauk Project may be shockingly all too real. Chris gives us the inside scoop on both the documentary and the television special and reveals some of the incredible evidence they uncovered in their dark and mysterious investigation. Guest Bio: Christopher Paul Garetano is the owner and president of White Phosphorus Pictures LLC. In 2005 He released his first documentary titled, Horror Business; an experimental study regarding the struggles of independent horror movie making. In 2006 he set out to make Montauk Chronicles, focusing on the alleged secret experiments that are said to have been conducted between 1971 and 1983. The final version of Montauk Chronicles was completed in the winter of 2014 and it premiered at the Philip K. Dick Film Festival, in New York City (in January of 2015) where it won the “Best Documentary Prize.” Christopher is an executive producer, director of re-creations and the co-host of the new History Channel show, The Dark Files. In addition to several motion picture projects, he is currently developing a new science fiction thriller with another Network, for 2018. Best-selling author Barry Eisler talks about his latest novel "The Gods Eye View," exploring issues of whistleblowing and mass surveillance. For one hour, Kevin Gosztola and Barry Eisler discuss Eisler's fiction book set in the present-day, where the government will hunt down and kill whistleblowers and journalists to protect secret worldwide surveillance programs. They talk about Eisler's key inspiration for the book, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, and other sources of inspiration for the story. They also have a conversation about the culture within the global security state, which is reflected in Eisler's novel.
When Evelyn Gallagher discovers the existence of an NSA program code-named God’s Eye, and connects it with the mysterious deaths of a string of journalists and whistleblowers, her doubts put her and her son in the crosshairs of a pair of government assassins and NSA director who believes unlimited surveillance is the only way to keep America safe. Last week, we shared the first half of Mike's interview with Barry Eisler at the Commonwealth Club of California. This week, we've got the second half of that discussion, which pivots from national security and the surveillance state to Barry's novels, his experiences publishing them, and the time he met Keanu Reeves.
Those of you who've heard our previous episodes with Barry Eisler know that he has a unique insight into many of the topics we discuss here at Techdirt, stemming from the wide variety of perspectives he's had in his past: as an operative for the CIA, as a tech industry lawyer, and now as a bestselling author (his new book, The God's Eye View, explores a plausible future inspired by the Snowden revelations). Recently, Mike conducted an interview with Barry at the Commonwealth Club of California, and on this week's podcast we've got the first half of that interview, with a fascinating discussion about the truth (and fiction) of the modern surveillance state.
