Shalita Grant from Netflix's "You" and TK Dutes visit friends and discuss natural hair freedom, how to treat 4C Hair with Four Natural Hair Care, the CROWN Act and more with host Marina Franklin.   Shalita Grant, a Tony-nominated actress, made headlines when she courageously left a popular TV show due to her struggle with traction alopecia and hair damage, which affected her in front of millions of viewers. Determined to find a solution, she developed a groundbreaking plant-based hair treatment that addressed her own complex type 4 hair issues. This led her to establish Four Naturals Hair in her dining room in Toluca Lake, California in 2019, which has now expanded into a nationwide salon and home care treatment system. With its plant-based active ingredients, the Four Naturals Treatment has become a transformative solution for textured hair, allowing Shalita's characters to look their best. Through her brand, she has empowered her clients, lovingly called Curlfriends, to experience newfound freedom and confidence with their type 4 hair, whether on vacation or in their daily lives. Shalita's commitment to healing and uplifting Black women has also extended to developing a patent-pending textured hair detangling technique that brings pain-free and stress-free experiences to both mothers and their children. Despite her own hair struggles, Shalita chose to rise above and make a positive impact in the industry, while finding joy in her personal life with her partner, former MMA World Champion Jessica Aguilar, and their three dogs in Puebla, Mexico. Keisha "TK" Dutes is a self professed "Rich Auntie" and a visual artist. You can find her experiments all over her IG page. She loves exploring the full potential of audio. Her experience spans terrestrial radio (WBAI-NY) , online (TK in The AM/Bondfire Radio), podcast (Buzzfeed's Thirst Aid Kit, Hear to Slay, etc) and audio drama, from W.E.B DuBois' The Comet, The Weeksvile Project, to Take Me To The Water - a 2020 Sarah Award winning piece for art history podcast, Accession. The first project under her new company Philo's Future Media is Open World, a podcast anthology about better futures through science and tech in partnership with Rose Eveleth and Flash Forward Presents. It has been featured in The Bello Collective's 100 Outstanding podcasts of 2020 and listed as a Top Podcast of 2020 by Spotify. TK spreads the gospel of radio/podcasting through workshops, mentorship, public speaking, and was listed on Current.org's "Black Talents in Public Media You Should Know.". She also serves on the board of the Association of Independents in Radio. When you started podcasting, things were different. Maybe a little. Maybe a lot. At some point, those differences are going to start adding up and you won't podcast the same way ever again. And that's OK.  Change comes for all of us at some point, and podcasters like you and me are not immune. Neither are those individuals who run companies that provide services to podcasters like you and me. The same goes for those providing services to podcast listeners. They aren't immune either. In reality; no aspect of podcasting is immune to change. Changes to podcasting don't have to be predicated by massive upheaval. And the stabie podcasting world you think you live in is either an illusion or a temporary condition.  Change is inevitable and has been with podcasting since the beginning. But as I look back at recent months, it sure looks like changes are coming at us a whole lot faster than they were before. Here are 3 indicators: 1. "Inactive" podcasts are swelling, whatever that means. There are many reasons why a podcaster makes the decision to stop podcasting at a certain point. But one commonality is that something has changed for that podcaster from the time they started podcasting to the time they posted their last episode.  2. Podcast-listener-focused services getting out of the game. It's not just https://bellocollective.com/the-final-newsletter-c30c140a5415 (Bello Collective), but they did specifically point to changes to the landscape that led to their halting—or at least pausing—of operations. Changes not only to podcasting, but to how people listen. 3. Podcaster-focused services are consolidating.  Flying under the radar of mergers with envy-inducing price tags are a slew of smaller mergers and roll-ups as interest from creators change. If there's a takeaway for you in all of this, it's simply a reminder that change comes for us all. In podcasting. In life. In business.  For those of us who've wrapped all three of those things together, it sure is making for an interesting ride. ----- Links Looking for a remote recording solution that handles both audio and video? you need https://evoterra.link/riverside (Riverside.fm)! https://podcastindustryinsights.com/apple-podcasts-statistics/ (Tracking "inactive" podcasts, whatever that means) https://bellocollective.com/the-final-newsletter-c30c140a5415 (Bello Collective closing up. Prioritize Community Building With, Not For, Your Podcast

Audience building and community building in podcasting are two very different things, though we use the terms interchangeably. And tend to ignore the latter. But true-community building has its own rewards. As a podcaster, it's often considered important to grow your audience. And I agree with that. But it's also important to do actual community building, where you and your podcast play an active role in helping build out or support the community in which you and your podcast belong. Why? Because you live within communities. Not just professionally, but also personally. When you think about community building, think wider. Here are three aspects to consider. Get Involved With Your Local Communities The people within a five-kilometer radius of where you podcast from may not be the audience of your show, but you still have to live near them! So play an active role and at least attend local community organization meetings or business mixers. Get Involved In Podcasting Communities There are several vibrant and active online communities you can join. Again, not to rake in new listeners, but to support all of podcasting. Like the https://bellocollective.com/ (Bello Collective), https://www.earbudspodcastcollective.org/ (Earbuds Collective), https://www.thepodcastacademy.com/ (The Podcast Academy), and other groups that support, spread, or empower the people who make podcasts.  Get Involved In Your Trade/Industry Communities And finally, don't forget the communities in and around the trade or the industry in which you and your podcast belong. Just about every industry or trade group out there has governing bodies or other special interest groups that put on mixers, create publications, host trade shows, and more.  Podcasters tend to know the importance of community building, but all too often take too narrow of a view. Hopefully, this higher-level picture of how you and your podcast can get involved with the communities in your orbit might be helpful. ----- Links Looking for a remote recording solution that handles both audio and video? you need https://evoterra.link/riverside (Riverside.fm)! https://bellocollective.com/ (Bello Collective) https://www.earbudspodcastcollective.org/ (Earbuds Collective) https://www.thepodcastacademy.com/ (The Podcast Academy) Serious about podcasting? I spoke to Galen Beebe who is a contributing editor at Bello Collective. Bello Collective is a website that is dedicated to writing about podcasting that focuses on criticism. Made up of a diverse team of writers, curators, podcasters and fans who are all passionate about the power of audio, they publishes analysis of specific podcasts, innovations in technology and journalism, and highlight shows that are worth listening to. It’s really a great hub for discourse about podcasts that goes beyond the well-worn hobby horses of monetisation and audience expansion. Galen comes from a literature background which is why we get on a trip about writing in relation to podcasting, along with talking about the website and the newsletter which anyone who listens to this show should subscribe to. We also cover topics such as production values of podcasting during the pandemic, journalistic ethics in podcasting, podcasting's relationship to legacy media (what’s new and old about it), helping academics turn research into podcasts, podcasting as ekphrastic writing and difficulties of writing about podcasting in general, what should podcast criticism do in terms of the focus on form and content, and engaging the labour of difficult art. In my opening remarks I think about the interrelationship between writing and speaking, between audio and text, and how the nomeclature we use to talk about podcasting can reflect the complex layers of technologies and practices that make defining a definitive criteria of the medium, so difficult. Most people can name a famous attraction or historical event in Berlin. Many can tell you a musician or artist that spent time in the city. When it comes to city politics, local business and garbage in Berlin, Radio Spätkauf picks up where the others left off.Hosted by four international residents of Berlin, Radio Spaetkauf presents facts and opinions on local issues with entertaining cultural insight. The show is produced for podcast and live audience and calls listeners to action on local issues. Bello Collective has recognised the podcast for its examination of the Berlin Brandenburg Airport project, aptly titled “How to Fuck Up An Airport”.You don’t need to live in Berlin to enjoy Radio Spaetkauf. Listeners from other international cities will recognise common themes of urban life. The hosts provide irreverent, analytical twists on each topic, resulting in a show with local and international flair.“What’s going on right now with Covid in Germany or Berlin ends up in the international press, but local elections don’t,” explains Daniel Stern, one of the show’s hosts. “That’s one of the times when I really feel like we’re doing our job and something valuable.”In this episode of MetaPod, we learn about current affairs in Berlin and how the Radio Spätkauf team performs with a sense of humour and wonder. We also hear about expat life and two pressing issues for the city, the housing crisis and notorious Berlin Brandenburg Airport.Daniel also reveals to MetaPod a few of the hot topics of life in Berlin, like trash sorting and abandoned bike locks. Introducing Our New Director of Podcaster Success

A few episodes back we mentioned Matt Medeiros, our new Director of Podcaster Success. With a few days as part of the team under his belt, we’re welcoming Matt as the official co-host of Audience. The purpose of our interview today is to give you an inside look at how Matt plans to take our customer’s shows to the next level. To define what the heck a “Director of Podcaster Success” means and why his background uniquely positions Matt as an authority on all things podcasting and WordPress. To break the ice, listen to the full episode to familiarize yourself with our team’s newest voice and point of view. Who is Matt Medeiros? You’re going to be hearing Matt’s voice a lot more going forward. But why should you trust the things he has to say? Well, there are a few good reasons. Starting from the beginning, Matt’s family owned local car dealerships in the Massachusetts area for over 50 years. But rather than try to mimic the big guys, they started with a family-oriented approach. For them, success was making sure they were positive contributors to their community. That’s where Matt’s roots in business, sales, marketing, and support were laid. Fast forward a few years, after Matt started a WordPress agency and worked as a sale person for a WordPress hosting company, he solidified himself as an expert on the open-source software. While hustling in the WordPress community, he also started creating podcasts about his passions for entrepreneurship and building connections with his community. His success podcasting is what lead to new opportunities like this job with Castos, connecting with major voices across multiple industries, and amplifying brands from his own circle of content creators. And somehow along the way, he found time to launch a successful YouTube channel with more WordPress tutorials designed to help business owners create better sites. If you have a question about marketing, podcasting, YouTubing, building relationships, or finding your unique voice, chances are Matt has an idea for you. Check out Matt’s other podcasts, The Matt Report and South Coast FM. Where is Audience headed now that Matt is onboard? From the start of the show, Audience has been a mixture of formats. We’ve recorded in-depth interviews with industry authorities like Tom Webster, Galen and Ashley from the Bello Collective, Rachel Corbett, or Jeff Umbro. We’ve dabbled in producing This American Life-esque episodes including our conversations about how to craft a narrative. And we’ve tried monologue formats to explain the finer points behind podcasting best practices like 4 ways to create a vide

With a diverse team of writers to build a solution, the Bello Collective started publishing podcasting resources to help hosts get started, grow, and sharpen their craft. Fast forward to 2020, that community has grown to elevate voices that don’t always get enough airtime. With readers and writers across Slack, email, Twitter, and their website, Ashely Lusk and Galen Beebe are the co-editors steering the ship. On this week’s episode of Audience, Craig sits down with Lusk and Beebe to talk about the Collective and how they built such an engaged community. Listen to the full episode now to hear firsthand why interrogating your definition of success can make you a better podcaster. Why Communication Is Key In the past, blogging and podcasting were primarily one-way conversations. The writer publishes an article, the reader digests their thoughts without the opportunity to directly collaborate with them. The podcaster releases an episode, the listener tunes in without being able to connect with the person on the other side of their headphones. But as industries shifted, so did the technology that enabled creators and consumers to start a dialogue. Podcasters are urged to start newsletters, social media accounts, YouTube channels, and Patreon followings to fuel the connection. Bello Collective was built from this foundation of dialogue. When pressed about how they morphed a static publication into a living community, Ashley and Galen highlighted the importance of having conversations with intention. Open dialogue is at the forefront of all of their interactions. For new writers, this means clear expectations about the editing process and what content they are looking for. Within their Slack channel, members can’t join until they agree to community guidelines that say keep all responses off the record. By doing so, every member can speak freely and surface discussions that may have otherwise bee

A student once asked me “How do you find the stories you feature on HowSound?” I’m asked that a lot, actually. And, I’m sorry to say, I don’t have any secrets to reveal. I probably find stories and podcasts the same way everyone else does. Here’s my very quick and cursory list. * I listen to the radio. A lot. * I ask people “What are you listening to that was really interesting? Or that pissed you off?” * I pick the brains of my students. They often get out their phones and rifle through what they subscribe to. * I’m always scouring newsletters and emails on radio listserves I belong to: a. The list for the Association of Independents in Radio b. The Transom Story Workshop Alumni listserve c. The list for the Sonic Soiree, a local listening group in Boston (I bet there’s a group near you). d. The newsletter from the Bello Collective e. The newsletter from Hot Pod f. Sam Greenspan’s occasional newsletter YSLTF: You Should Listen to Fridays. * I’m a member of a couple of Facebook groups: a. The Podcasters Support Group b. The BEA Teaching Audio Production Group * I subscribe to podcasts that feature work from a lot of different producers: a. Short Cuts from the BBC b. Unfictional from KCRW c. The BBC’s Between the Ears podcast * I search for subject matter I’m personally interested in. For instance, I might search for “Arctic” and “podcasts.” Or, “podcasts on the environment.” I’m sure I’ve left something out. (What would you add?) Perhaps the short answer is: my ear radar is always on; I’m constantly on the hunt. I should mention, too, that as I’m listening, I look for a way into the story for a HowSound episode. Is there a “teachable moment” in the piece? Did the producer do something unusual and notable? Do I find myself wondering “How the heck did they do that?!” Sometimes it’s just a matter of being satisfied by the story or a production technique. That’s what this episode of HowSound is about. On a recent road trip, I listened to several hours of stories and made a mental list of segments from those stories that caught attention, that I found satisfying. This is a different way of producing HowSound. Typically, I find one story and interview the producer. But, today, I feature a slew of clips that caught my ear and I offer some thoughts about what worked and what didn’t. Stories from Earshot, The City, and Sound Africa. If you get a chance, let me know if this episode worked for you. And, tell me what I should be listening to next.
