In this episode, I am playing a classic from Black Chick Lit in which they discuss Addicted. Enjoy. This is Part two of two. We're back for round two of Zane's Addicted, and the second half is as incomprehensible as the first. We wrap up Urban Fic January with the second half of our discussion of this "erotic" book, and things are problematic, to say the least. The storyline touches on rape, molestation and murder, and none of those topics are handled well. Want a fun drinking game? Count how many times we say the words "gross" and "unsexy." Your liver will hate us. If you're interested in seeing the rest of Dani's notes, you can find them on Goodreads. Missed the first half of our conversation? Listen in to last week's episode. Dani and Mollie from the Black Chick Lit podcast join me to discuss Jessie Redmon Fauset's third novel, "The Chinaberry Tree". A fascinating novel that explores the lives of three black women in a small suburban town in early 1900s New Jersey. The novel explores their desire for respectability and security through marriage. But a family secret lingers in the background of their lives and threatens to disrupt all their dreams. In the first 30 minutes we have a spoiler free discussion of the book and Molli and Dani provide great insights on how Faucet's classic work share similarity to some contemporary literary genres. The remaining portions of the discussion dig deep into the characters and the dynamics of life depicted in this novel. Dani and Molli bring great wisdom and fun to the discussion of this novel. Black Chick Lit is a bi-monthly podcast that talks books by and about black women. Each month, they host an in-depth look at a title written by a black woman and its author. Dani and Mollie read across genres and forms, including literary fiction, non-fiction, YA, poetry, and urban fiction. Previous episodes include Queen Sugar, by Natalie Baszile; The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas; and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. In between book discussion episodes, they host Black Chit Lit Chats. Each month, they ask listeners to share their opinions about different aspects of reader life. Check out this episode where we discuss books every black woman should read.

Boy, what a title, eh? What could "bunch of blondes" and "Black chick" have to do with education? Well, I bet if you look at your class or campus full of students, you see people who remind you of yourself--the parts you like, yourself--the parts you don't like, or people you either have an affinity for or dislike of. Some educators may not make the connections to how they feel, they may stuff their preferences down, or at least they may think they do. It's a bad plan. Students know. And truth will out. So listen to my own reckoning and do some of your own. Find some connection and see how you can adjust for that experience to make doubly sure that no connection to a past experience is keeping you from being the most welcoming teacher that you can be. You'll be better for it and so will your students. Mollie was there with me when I discovered the series, so it's only proper that she join me for this trip back to Not Hoth. We had a lot of questions: How did Josie not feel that IUD slip out her pants? Where is the Ice Planet sex planet? And is Haeden actually an idiot? The pod is off next week, but be sure to check back the following week when Melinda, from Romance Sparks Joy and the RomBkPod joins me to discuss book seven, Barbarian's Heart. Got a comment?
