Blake Hudson, also known as the Eartheartisan, is a leader in the world of permaculture consulting, design, and education. With a passion for utilising cutting-edge technology to conduct site analysis and read landscapes, Blake is able to provide tailored edible garden plans or "green prints" for clients seeking to grow organic food in their home gardens. From urban blocks to hobby lifestyles or homesteading farms and eco-villages, Blake's expertise extends both locally and internationally. In this episode, we discuss his earlier inspirations that led him on his path and the dogma of permaculture, as well as his commitment to accuracy and attention to detail with the use of drone mapping and 'Sun Surveyer' for data collection. He has spent the past decade perfecting his design process, which has resulted in mentoring his students and personalising landscape manuals with prescribed plant collections that help people put the right plant, in the right place, at the right time. Blake is an avid plant enthusiast with a nursery, and he grows, harvests, and cooks with a diverse array of species from his very own "garden of eating." He recently published a comprehensive resource, "Tropical Food Plants - A Field Guide to Tropical Edible Plants," which explores 121 edible plant profiles suitable for tropical regions worldwide. Beyond his fetish for making fertile soil, one of Blake's unique talents lies in his ability to retrofit ornamental gardens with food species, which is becoming a strong desire by many people who want to become more self-sufficient within the space they already have without having to move to a farm. He is particularly drawn to perennial plants such as bananas, which offer multi-functional benefits, and comfrey, which he considers to be his super healer home-grown medicine. In addition to his expertise in permaculture, Blake has a deep understanding of various regenerative land practices, including broad-acre regenerative farming, biodynamics, syntropic and market gardening, as well as bio-intensive and nutrient-dense gardening. His love for 'spreading the worms' is infectious, and his love of practical workshopping in hot composting, food forestry and banana circle management. Blake generously shares his knowledge through workshops and courses in collaboration with @earthmumma (me!). Beyond his work in permaculture, Blake is also a talented visual projection artist, lighting up the festival scene with patterns from nature and inspiration from the psychedelic realm. He invites you to join him at upcoming events, such as Rootbound and the Eco-fiesta, for an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and experience the magic of the natural world. He is offering a $100 discount for his next workshop and a link to download a free tropical annual planting guide. Blake Hudson just wants to serve his country well as a lawyer for the United States Justice Department—but when an unknown threat begins plotting his downfall, he must find who is setting him up before it costs him his life.Scavenger Hunt is a suspense novel chronicling the plight of Blake Hudson, a Justice Department lawyer assigned to a clandestine counterterrorist group created to bypass onerous legal requirements. After the group mysteriously disbands, Hudson becomes the scapegoat and is transformed from hunter to hunted. As he searches for answers and attempts to piece the puzzle together, people are following him, trying to kill him. Written for fans of fast-paced thrillers, dry humor, political gamesmanship, and Clue-like twists and turns, Scavenger Hunt carves out a distinct niche best described as a hybrid of the Robert Ludlum classics and works by Brad Meltzer. Blake Hudson's story addresses issues that have shaped recent elections and continue to frustrate interest groups and government leaders, while featuring the inner workings of the U.S. Department of Justice Building—arguably the most important and misunderstood agency in the federal government. Author Chad Boudreaux's unique voice and page-turning storytelling packs a plot-driven punch that readers won't be able to put down. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. This episode of Sales Career Podcast with Kevin Hopp features Blake Hudson, SDR Manager at Tapcart. The skill of listening is one of the most important skills a seller must have. Blake also talks about the growth he experienced by getting let go, his advocacy for every seller to become accountable for their own mental health, and being a voice for others.  HIGHLIGHTSBlake's mission is to help SDRs find their vision, identity & purposeSelling during the pandemic was the biggest challenge so farThe Gratitude Gap: Happiness is when gratitude creeps just above entitlementGetting let go from re:work and learning accountability for mental healthNot knowing is the start of growing QUOTESA mission to help others find their purpose Blake: "My personal mission in life is to help people get clear about their identity, their practice, and purpose. Who they are, what they're doing, and why."Listening is important in politics and sales Blake: That's where my background in politics really helped out because politics is also what I studied in school—communication, political science—learning how to speak the language of the audience that you're in front of, learning how to shut up and listen, ask a great question, and before you can even say anything, you got to understand where they're coming from."The Gratitude Gap explained Blake: "Because that gratitude crept just above my entitlement, that gap was happiness. And for my teammates that remained entitled and that crept just above their gratitude, that was their frustration."Blake's advice to sellers on the first day of the job Blake: "Not knowing is where you begin growing. I was selling fintech, remote finance and accounting, and Kevin, I didn't know a damn thing about remote finance or accounting. No, we wanted to get to the heart of growth leadership, finding talent, nurturing talent, and helping people to unlock their giftings. Blake knows (and he's right) that there aren't enough people talking about that. In a turbulent world heading for inflation bubbles, interest hikes, supply constraints and talent frenzies, we think he's on to something. How do you lead and create a magnetic culture, that attracts strong talent, so that it can be blowing a gale outside with monsoonal economic hail, and the team are so solid with such focus that they can navigate it through? That's what Blake has been ‘getting into' lately. His bomb from the episode? And under every professional veneer lies a more complex person, with histories and experiences that shape their personalities and performance.  Terry and Blake discuss the necessity for leaders to understand this and to know that there is a "narrative in the numbers." To effectively lead, you need to get personal. Many people new to sales are afraid to share fears or insecurities. The ability to understand those that we work with, allows trust to be built on both sides. Ashleigh and Kasey talk to Blake Hudson, the Admission Manager at Victory Lap, about gratitude, his background in politics, and how to clarify your identity and purpose.Show NotesThe Gratitude Gap-Blake hit the ground running in his first sales role, hitting quota for the first three months. In the fourth month, the stakes increased. His quota doubled, leads narrowed, and he felt he wouldn't be able to meet the metrics.-After spending the better part of the quarter sulking, a conversation with a friend helped him to realize that if he could change his viewpoint to one of gratitude, he would be happier and more likely to succeed at work.Politics-In his junior year of high school, Blake attended Boys State, a week for learning about civic engagement and responsibility that impacted him greatly. He returned for his senior year, signed up for an American Government class amid the 2008 election, and his group won the mock campaign assignment.-Believing that politics could be where he would shine, Blake went to college and studied Political Science and Communication and, upon graduating, began working on the Senate Floor.-While there, he saw what the real work in politics is: listening to your constituents, understanding their needs, taking that to the state or national level, and building coalitions around it.-He then went on to get his Master's in Public Administration before running for State Senate.Sales-His Senate campaign ended, and he worked on a congressional campaign. After this, he found himself at a very liminal spot in his career.-While attempting to make sense of his resume, he worked as an admissions counselor. His manager emphasized that this role was a sales position he was selling the university.-Blake realized he wasn't getting paid or trained like a sales professional, so he brainstormed ways he could break into sales and eventually found Victory Lap.Talking to People About Sales-A tactic he learned early on from giving speeches is to put your focus on the audience. Think about how they are benefitting from your interaction. Sales is about solving problems for other people.-For underrepresented groups, it can be hard to picture success in the sales industry. Someone must be actively seeking individuals of those groups out and presenting the job in a way that instills the confidence that they can learn and succeed in the role.Sales as a Start-Sales is a phenomenal launching point for a variety of different careers. Not only are you able to dip your toe into a wide array of departments, but the skillset relates to every industry and even to personal life to build better relationships.Who You Want the Be-The question of who you want to be is overwhelming but can be approached practically.-Blake helps professionals find clarity and understand what they want by asking what they needed when they were growing up. From there, they then think about how they can provide that for other people, and how those people then change as a result.-Another tactic would be to ask why multiple times.Resources-Ditch the Pitch by Steve YastrowConnect with Blake-LinkedInSend in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/othersideofsales/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/othersideofsales/support

In this episode, Blake Hudson, Professor of Law and A.L. O'Quinn Chair in Environmental Studies at the University of Houston Law Center, discusses his article "Denying Disaster: A Modest Proposal for Transitioning from Climate Change Denial Culture in the Southeastern United States," which he co-authored with Evan Spencer, and published in the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review. Hudson begins by observing that the Southeastern United States is especially vulnerable to climate change, but voters in the region resist policies intended to mitigate climate change. He reflects on the reasons for that resistance, and offers thoughts on how advocacy organizations could communicate with Southern voters more effectively.
