David talks about attending Levin College of Law at the University of Florida where he currently serves on the Board of the UF Law E-Discovery Conference. After graduating law school, David took a non-traditional path and began his career as a reporter at The National Law Journal. Immersed in all things e-Discovery, David discusses how he makes an effort to make the topic fun and engaging. Brian and David share some stories of practicing law in higher education as David spent time early in his career representing Brown University and Brian spent a decade as the General Counsel for Grand Canyon University. David explains how he became interested in e-Discovery and learned about legal technology during the September 11 attacks when he was a reporter at the National Law Journal and was one of only two reporters to make it down to Ground Zero, writing for many days on the 9/11 attack and the resulting impact on the e-Discovery industry. As Discovery Counsel and Legal Education Director at Relativity, David talks about how he gets to enjoy the best of both worlds as a lawyer and journalist by researching, writing and presenting across the country on the world of e-Discovery.David advises law students and young attorneys to keep your options open early in your career and consider e-Discovery as a career. He talks about the intersection of law and technology and how quickly the industry has changed in a very short period of time beginning with major amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure in 2006 where the rules were modified to make clear that emails fell into the definition of what was discoverable in civil proceedings, followed by the Da Silva Moore case in 2012 where Judge Peck blessed technology assisted review, and up to today where ChatGPT has caused an explosion in the use and interest in artificial intelligence in the world of legal technology. David talks about how many e-Discovery firms got their start as litigation copying firms and offers an interesting note that the company IKON stands for “I Know One Name,” which leads to an interesting discussion about the hidden meaning behind some corporate names and logos. The discussion evolves into the history of e-Discovery, the early days of Concordance of Summation and the founding and history of Relativity which was originally named kCura (a mashup of “k” for knowledge and “cura”, the Latin root for management). Relativity understood early that the volume of electronic data was skyrocketing and the legal market needed a solution that could handle the unique demands of dealing with large amounts of data. Today, Relativity is a giant in the e-Discovery industry and annually hosts the popular Relativity Fest conference where industry leaders converge to discuss the latest developments in the industry. David discusses the implementation of AI into e-Discovery and the tools that Relativity has been developing to stay out in front with the latest technology to meet the needs of clients. Given all of the advancements in technology and its rapid adoption in the legal industry, Brian and David have an interesting discussion on the future of law and how they expect it to evolve going forward.Last, Brian and David discuss the future of legal operations and the opportunities that exist for enterprising young entrepreneurs and attorneys. The rapid development of legal ops has led to an explosion of opportunities in that field and the exciting career opportunities that have developed recently. Please visit the links below for more information on David, Brian, Relativity and Array, who serves as the host sponsor of The Attorney Lounge.Links:David Horrigan: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-horrigan-3a482a6/Brian Roberts: https://www.linkedin.com/in/beeberts/Relativity: https://www.relativity.com/Array: https://www.trustarray.com Lawyers careers

Stare Decisis, a Latin term meaning “let it stand,” is a key element of how American law is interpreted, applied, and adjudicated. When applied, it leads courts to stand by decided cases, to uphold precedents, and/or to maintain former adjudications. How exactly that principle should be applied, however, is a topic of some debate. In Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court held that a proper application of stare decisis required an assessment of the strength of the grounds on which the prior precedent was based. That articulation has led some to question: what are the implications of applying that conception of stare decisis to the Court’s constitutional criminal jurisprudence under the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Amendments? What might be its effect on those rights and remedies?Featuring:Hon. John F. Bash, III, Partner, Quinn EmanuelMr. Michael Caruso, Federal Public Defender, Southern District of FloridaProf. Meghan J. Florida's housing crisis has been a growing concern in recent years, affecting a wide range of communities throughout the state. Among those hit the hardest are victims of domestic and sexual violence, who often face unique challenges when seeking safe and stable housing. In this podcast, we will explore the root causes of Florida's housing crisis, including systemic poverty, discrimination, and limited affordable housing options. We will also examine the ways in which the housing crisis has a disproportionate impact on victims of domestic and sexual violence, who are often forced to remain in abusive situations due to lack of affordable housing options. Joe spent the first two years of his legal career as an Equal Justice Works Fellow practicing Community Lawyering for immigrant families. He has since transitioned such efforts into housing discrimination enforcement and outreach, where he manages Florida Legal Services' Fair Housing Initiative Project via the HUD funded FHOI/EOI programs. He has a bachelor's degree from DePaul University, a M.A. from the University of Colorado in Public Policy, and a J.D. from the University of Florida, Levin College of Law. Since graduating from the University of Florida in 2007, Erika Recek has spent most of her legal career working in public interest law, ensuring that individuals in vulnerable situations have a voice in the judicial process. She has worked at various legal aid organizations, helping survivors of domestic violence with legal issues involving injunctions, family law related matters, housing, and consumer law issues. Erika joined Florida Legal Services in 2018, where she has continued to assist survivors of domestic violence in her role as Director of Survivor Advocacy while also engaging in systemic impact advocacy for vulnerable populations. #FloridaHousingCrisis #DomesticViolence #SexualViolence #AffordableHousing

GUEST: Melissa Register, senior wealth planner, Fifth Third Private Bank As 2016 draws to a close and we look towards 2017 many of us take time to reflect on our lives to determine what is working and what do we want to change. Many of us set new goals or reaffirm old ones. Formally sitting down and thinking about what you want to achieve in the new year can be inspiring and empowering. I actually go back to my spreadsheet where I have defined my life purpose, my values and I take the time to realign my goals with my long-term vision. This has kept me on a course towards fulfilling my dreams. Whether inspired by a formal, sit down process or simply drawing the line in the sand and saying this year will be different, an estimated one in three Americans are said to make a New Year’s resolution related to their finances and it is important to recognize that actions you take now in December can impact your financial goals for the new year. To support year-end planning success, Fifth Third Private Bank recently released digital guides with strategies for individuals and families to consider in preparation for tax season. Among the strategies, Fifth Third experts recommend reducing taxable income, maximizing investment opportunities and strategically planning for charitable giving. Melisa Register, senior wealth planner from Fifth Third Private Bank explains these strategies on this show. About Melissa Register: Melissa Register is a vice president and senior wealth planner for Fifth Third Private Bank. In this role, Melissa works with clients to develop strategies for all aspects of their financial lives, including tax, retirement, family wealth, business succession and estate planning. Prior to joining Fifth Third, Melissa was a practicing attorney with experience in estate and trust planning, tax planning and corporate law. While in law school, Melissa received the University of Florida College of Law’s Certificate in Estates and Trusts Practice. She holds a B.A. in French and international trade from Clemson University and a J.D. from University of Florida’s Fredric G. Levin College of Law. Melissa currently resides in Cleveland, OH. On June 19th, 2015 America and Great Britain celebrated the 800th birthday of the Magna Carta. This small piece of paper represents one of the two greatest documents westerns have, yet most know nothing about it.  We can tell you about Robin Hood, Russel Crow and Kevin Costner versions, but we cannot tell you where the backdrop of this fictional story came from. But, without it, we do not the Bill of rights or our Constitution.  We simply would not have the United States of America. Long, long ago, students were taught the principles of liberty in the school houses and homes, but that has long since passed away. While Common Core promises to equip today's children to be able to work in the 21st century, it does nothing to prepare them to live and operate as a free individual in a republic. Bring your family around and join returning guest, KrisAnn Hall, as we discuss the significance of the Magna Carta. KrisAnne Hall is  an attorney and former prosecutor who travels the country teaching the Constitution and the history that gave us our founding documents. She is the host of The KrisAnne Hall Show, she pulls no punches, puts Liberty First and gives no quarter to those who hide behind party labels. Like no other can, KrisAnne teachers tell what the founders had to say on today's relevant issues. KrisAnne is a disabled Army veteran, a Russian linguist, a mother, a pastor's wife and a patriot. She received her undergraduate degree in Bio-Chemistry from Blackburn College in 1991 and her J.D. from the University of Florida, Levin College of Law. A common question, then, is what can people truly expect to be be private when so much information is accessible. In his new book Privacy in the New Media Age (University Press of Florida 2015), Jon L. Mills (University of Florida, Levin College of Law), discusses another issue related to privacy in the digital environment: the conflict between privacy and freedom of expression. In so doing, Mills examines how the law, particularly in the United States, is always chasing advances in technology, and discusses how countries in the European Union have attempted to tackle this matter. That privacy in the digital age is an important concept to be discussed is axiomatic. Cameras in mobile phones make it easy to record events and post them on the web. Consumers post an enormous amount of information on social media sites. And much of this information is made publicly available.
