I speak with award-winning music photographer Michael Weintrob about his unusual path through the visual side of music, and how keeping his head down and his heart open has resulted in one of the most exciting careers in the business.Michael and I met around 2013. I was instantly struck by his combustible hustle, a kind of leaning forward in life. I was rocking bowties back then (call it my Willie Wonka phase) and… he grabbed me in my native habitat.I've been following him ever since — through his launch of the Instrumenthead series, his installations at Jazzfest in New Orleans, the two exquisitely crafted Instrumenthead coffee table books, and the Instrumenthead Live concert series he produced during the pandemic, which featured more than 70 concerts filmed and broadcast out of the Weintrob studio. Pivot, move forward, pivot, move forward. Along the way Michael has cemented his reputation as a go-to live concert photographer for some of the coolest venues in the world: Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Ascend Amphitheater, the Newport Jazz Festival, the Newport Folk Festival, the Barcelona Jazz Festival and Bluegrass Underground. In this wide-ranging conversation, we talked about the evolution of Instrumenthead, from its genesis as a spontaneous idea backstage, to a slowly accruing catalogue of artists and opportunities. How it was anything but an overnight success. We also share stories of loss and tragedy — Michael going through a cousin's suicide and the death of my little sister — and how those life experiences changed our perspective and priorities. I also share a story I've never told before about a fated trip to see the Grateful Dead my senior year of high year, and the tragedy that happened along the way.Throughout, we take a look at some of the artists captured in Weintrob's camera, and learn why he chose the poses he did. Artists like Derek Trucks, Rhiannon Giddens, Bootsy Collins, Mickey Hart, and… me.I have a ton of respect and admiration for Michael Weintrob. A guy who not only blazed an original path through a fraught industry of intense competition and constant uncertainty, but who came out of it creating somethingculturally important, historical even.Website https://michaelweintrob.com/Instagram https://www.instagram.com/michaelweintrob/The Morse Code is a reader-supported publication. Our latest guest on Jrodconcerts: The Podcast is something of an institution when it comes to the realms of music. Michael Weintrob is an American photographer, philanthropist and creative who has snapped anyone who's anyone in the music industry. He's also served as house photographer for the Newport Jazz Festival, the Newport Folk Festival, the Barcelona Jazz Festival and the Bluegrass Underground. Michael has also had a long-standing relationship with the Nashville music scene, and is currently launching INSTRUMENTHEAD REVEALED, the sequel to the critically acclaimed INSTRUMENT collection. The INSTRUMENTHEAD collection is a surrealist look into the soul of a musician, not through their eyes as with traditional portraiture, but through his/her instrument. It began in April 2000, through a candid moment in a photoshoot with the Derek Trucks Band, which sparked an unprecedented art project, bringing together more than 500 musicians from across the globe over the course of nearly two decades. Instrumenthead revealed is the sequel, where Michael unmasks these musicians in a way you've never seen before. You can find more about the project and pre-order your book at www.michaelweintrob.com

Oteil & Mike talk with singer, songwriter and musician Billy Strings on the heels of his GRAMMY win for Best Bluegrass Album. Billy shares the genesis of his 6-night ESP experiment stream series at the Capitol Theatre, which paid homage to the Grateful Dead's 1971 run. He talks about the mentors that helped turn his life around, coming full circle when he got to introduce his dad to Bluegrass legends like Del McCoury and David Grisman, and explains how songwriting for him is like traveling through outer space. Billy also discusses a recurring dream of his, stories from roughing it early in his career, and so much more. Acclaimed singer, songwriter and musician Billy Strings recently won Best Bluegrass Album at the 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards for his critically acclaimed record, Home. Michigan-born and now Nashville-based, Strings arrived on the music scene as one of the most compelling new artists with the release of his 2017 debut LP, Turmoil & Tinfoil. Since his debut, Strings has been awarded Guitar Player of the Year and New Artist of the Year at the 2019 International Bluegrass Music Awards, selected as one of Rolling Stone's 2017 “New Country Artists to Know” and performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and PBS' “Bluegrass Underground.” Often playing over 200 shows per year, he has also become known as an electric live performer, keeping the improvisational tradition of bluegrass alive while incorporating elements of several diverse genres. There's a new record forthcoming for 2016 Trucker Talent Search winning singer-songwriter Jason Lee Wilson, due in the new year. It's dubbed, simply, "Tennessee," and it's title track is an appreciation of home for the East Tennessee resident. He performed it as part of a three-song set at The Caverns venue in Pelham, Tenn., current home of the Bluegrass Underground television program -- you can hear it, and hear more about just where the song and the album are coming from, in today's edition of the Overdrive Radio podcast. Also there, a talk with trucker/singer-songwriter Tony Justice about his recent performance in quite a nontraditional venue for many artists -- though not exactly for Justice himself: Bristol Motor Speedway, where he gave a post-race infield show for attendees of the Bandit Series big-rig-racing finale (congrats once again to Ricky "Rude" Proffitt for the season points championship). He also speaks to ongoing advocacy efforts of Trucker Nation, an organization he cofounded, and the difficulty he's had getting his crystal ball to work when it comes to the question of whether FMCSA Administrator Ray Martinez's impending departure as agency head holds any import for the hours of service changes Martinez played a large role in fast-tracking.
Global Tennessee brings you a special Podcast featuring renowned photographer Ronald Modra, 25 years with “Sports Illustrated” and a whopping 70 “SI” covers! In our second segment we talk with Lisset Diaz, lead singer of the Sweet Lizzy Project, a band with its roots in Havana, Cuba that is now working hard to make it big in Music City in the process making some great sounds. LEGENDARY LENSMAN Mention any legendary athlete from the last four decades and there’s a likelihood that she or he has been at the other end of Ron Modra’s camera lens. Mickey Mantle, Muhammad Ali, Pete Rose, Brett Favre, Nolan Ryan, Martina Navratilova, Lawrence Taylor, Tom Brady, Cal Ripken, Joe Montana. World Series, Olympic Games. Portraits, action shots, coffee table books. Well you get it. Ron’s 25 years with SI put him front row with the world’s best. Then there’s his love of the Blues and his portraits of some of America’s finest musicians. But there’s more. Travel photography. We loved talking with Ron about the best of the best professional athletes and his great stories – like winding up in Gordie Howe’s home for Thanksgiving dinner – but our lane in the road is Ron’s international travel photography. Galapagos, Argentina, Cuba, China, Italy, Scotland, and many more. Special images of people and places – bringing the world to you in the magic of still photography. Join us in our conversation with photographer Ronald Modra, one of the people who make Nashville a special place, as we learn about capturing the world with a camera. Also learn about how you can join Ron and his colleague, Don Smith, on an upcoming photo excursion. “Fall in the Scottish Highland” next October can be your chance to experience the mystical landscapes and villages of the Isle of Skye, Isles of Harris and Lewis and the Glencoe area. Check Don Smith’s web site for details on this fabulous opportunity. http://www.ronaldcmodra.com http://www.donsmithphotography.com SWEET LIZZY PROJECT “Turn up the radio.” Indeed. In our conversation with Cuban native Lisset Diaz (aka Lizzy of the Sweet Lizzy Project) we learned the value of being in the right places at the right times. If making great music is only part of the formula for success in a tough business Sweet Lizzy Project is well on their way. Mix in their good fortune of being profiled in a PBS documentary “Havana Time Machine” along with the “Mavericks” from Nashville and lead singer Raul Malo. That connection led to an invitation to Nashville, an opportunity that was almost lost to Washington’s change in visa policy under the current White House. Fortunately Sweet Lizzy Project had performed for American diplomats in Cuba and managed to get their paperwork through just under the wire. Listen to this Global Tennessee Podcast to hear the rest of Lisset’s and the band’s story of making great music in Nashville, inside a Tennessee mountain cavern and in their travels around America – “a distinctive sound imbued with overtones of classic American indie pop-rock suffused with an intoxicating Latino flair.” We have several of Sweet Lizzy Project’s songs in our Podcast for your enjoyment. Hello everyone and welcome to the Live Music Podcast episode 35. If you are joining us from the Live Music Blog then let me welcome you back for Part 2 of Keep on Votin' in the Free World. If not make sure you check out Part 1. If you haven't guessed it yet, the theme for this episode is registering new voters. Voter registration deadlines are fastly approaching in many states, with October 4th being the first, so there is no time to waste if you aren't yet registered. Even if you are not planning on voting it is still a very good idea to register in case you make the decision to vote when it's too late. There really aren't any downsides to registering…it's fast and requires very little effort. A great place to start the process is by going to non-partisan websites Rockthevote.com or HeadCount.org to begin the registration process or to check the voter registration deadlines in your state. Part 2 of Keep on Votin' in the Free World takes place where Part 1 left off with more great sounding audience recordings featuring politically charged music. Once again all music was downloaded via archive.org and bt.etree.org for artists with open taping policies. Thanks again to the bands for allowing these recordings and to the tapers that made them. Please enjoy part 2 and if you still need to register do it today!
