I got a rare opportunity to interview Joe Mullins at the end of his forensic workshop at the Academy. After filming his class for work to create a short video I wanted to get a more in depth understanding of who Joe was and what his work meant to him. His job is serious and can bring closure to many families who have lost their loved ones so I highly recommend you watch the video version of this interview to look through the images at the end of the video and share it with your friends. The full length video interview: LinkYou can find the short video about Joe's class here: LinkHis Forensic Workshop in NY annually takes place around May at the New York Academy of Art. I'm delighted to be delving into my CD's again, and I think I've come up with some gems for you. Great bluegrass from the likes of JD Crowe, The Dillards, Sawmill Road, Kenny & Amanda Smith, Sister Sadie and Joe Mullins; a new original opening track from me with Jean-Luc Leroux, and a track from Cliff Waldron that didn't make it into last week's show.
Joe is joined by Limerick-based actor Joe Mullins to discuss the film he stars in, "The Line", which was created by Limerick filmmakers and is set to be shown at the Lighthouse Cinema on February 26th as part of the Dublin International Film Festival. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We kick off with some ‘original ‘ bluegrass from Bill Monroe & the Blue Grass Boys, and include both contemporary bluegrass (Sassafras, Jordan Tice, Del McCoury), some ‘classic' bluegrass (Country Gentlemen, Joe Mullins, Nashville Bluegrass Band and the HCBB) and some that defies categorization (J D Crowe & the New South, Dan Walsh) but it's all bluegrass, folks!
In this episode of Zone 7, Crime Scene Investigator, Sheryl McCollum, talks with forensic artist, Joe Mullins. Joe discusses how he uses his artistic talents to help law enforcement solve cold cases. He shares stories of bringing names and answers to families, challenges interpreting ancestry from skulls, memorable lessons from John Walsh, and the rewards of teaching forensic art. Guest Bio and Links: Joe Mullins is a forensic artist with 25 years of experience, particularly, in facial reconstruction for cold cases. Mullins has studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design and attended the FBI Academy. He works with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. [2:00] Sheryl introduces guest, Joe Mullins to the listeners [4:10] Question: Where and how do you have these skulls? [9:15] The Art of Forensics at the New York Academy of Art [12:10] The process of facial reconstruction [15:10] Question: When do you start to see the face, meaning, when do you see the person looking back at you? [17:30] Question: Why are lips so challenging for a sculptor? [26:00] Question: Can you talk about some cases solved because of your efforts? [35:30] "People say closure. I don't, I don't like that word. I'm never, never going to forget my son. A better way to explain the service that the National Center is providing with these images is you're providing answers to families because not knowing is a nightmare you can't wake up from." - John Walsh to Joe Mullins [45:30] Training and mentoring the next generation [46:45] Take a moment to look at the current list of missing children at www.missingkids.org [48:50] “At first, it was a bit eerie for the students as they unpacked the skull replicas. But about four days into the class, something changed. Students were no longer looking at a skull, a relatively abstract concept of a human, but a person.” -J.V Thanks for listening to another episode! In episode four of our Applications of Forensic Science for Human Identification season, Just Science sat down with Katharine Pope, a Research Public Health Analyst at RTI International, Dr. Bruce Anderson, a Forensic Anthropologist with the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner, and Joe Mullins, an Instructor at the New York Academy of Art, to discuss human identification using forensic anthropology and facial approximations. From skeletal remains found in the woods to mass casualty events, forensic anthropologists use their knowledge and expertise of biological profile estimation and skeletal trauma analysis to help establish identities for unknown individuals. Forensic artists who are trained in facial approximations use skulls and other identifying information to recreate victims' faces. Listen along as Katharine, Dr. Anderson, and Joe discuss how their disciplines interact, coordination with various entities to resolve cases, and how to get in touch with local forensic anthropologists and forensic artists. This episode is funded by the National Institute of Justice's Forensic Technology Center of Excellence (Award No. 15PNIJ-21-GK-02192-MUMU).

From March 26, 2015, Apex Combat's Dave Markert joins Dave Willis of WTNJ-FM in Beckley, West Virginia, looking ahead to his rubber match with in-ring rival Joe Mullins as the featured pro bout at the 2015 Toughman Contest. The show returns to the road. Not a very long road though. We're back in downtown Nashville at the City Winery with a lineup split in two chapters. In the first half, it's Americana rock and soul with Nora Jane Struthers, offering material off her acclaimed album Champion, and newcomer Emma Hern with a sultry and exceptional voice. Then it's bluegrass, traditional form with Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers and in the more exotic, adventuresome form with the Travellin' McCourys. And father Del joins for a couple of songs as well.
Australian artist Michael Zavros is The Art Hub's first 'in studio artist', forensic artist Joe Mullins and student Antonia Barolini share their extraordinary work recreating the faces of eight men found dead on the US-Mexico border, Barbara Heggen meets some of Melbourne's most experienced life models, and we speak to some very clever kids about what they see in one of Australia's most prestigious artwork.
In honour of the birthday of Joe Mullins we feature songs from his two most recent CDs with the Radio Ramblers. Plus, some great new music and more birthdays to celebrate!
We at Roots probably have you conditioned by now so that when we say “bluegrass” you know we mean the whole range, from roots to branches. Our all-bluegrass shows generally include a Greensky or a Sam Bush Band, because one of the greatest things about the field is its freedom. It’s one of the ultimate artist-driven, innovation-friendly genres and we’ll always celebrate that. But this week was different – a turn toward bluegrass fundamentalism if you will. It was all trad. No rad. And boy was it excellent. Lineup in order: The Lonesome River Band Foghorn String Band Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers The Isaacs

THE ANNIE MOSES BAND has wowed audiences performing their unique roots music that blossoms into a baroque-pop sound flavored with a shot of classical fervor and dy-namic string instrumentation. Named after their great grandmother who prioritized mu-sical education for her children, even in poverty stricken times, The Annie Moses Band is comprised of 9 members of the Wolaver family, several who are Julliard alumni. The band has just released their latest album 'Pilgrims and Prodigals'. It's a sophisticated, complex blending of classical, jazz, folk, bluegrass and even a frisson of Celtic thrown in for good measure. JOE MULLINS & THE RADIO RAMBLERS are one of the hottest music acts in the Midwest. They are the 2012 IBMA Emerging Artist of the Year. The band is collaboration of veteran Bluegrass musicians who have worked with one another during former musical endeavors, in the Ohio Valley. They are fronted by Joe Mullins, a banjo player and AM radio station owner that has earned 5 IBMA awards and 3 SPBGM awards over the past two decade.
