A pediatrician by training, Najat Maalla M'jid has always been dedicated to rescuing children from suffering. Now United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, she works tirelessly to protect young people around the world. “What I learned in my life, it's the eyes. […] When you are speaking with children, when you have light in their eyes, it's still possible. When the light switches off, it's too late.” Half of the world's children are exposed to violence every year, often leaving devastating, lasting impacts on their mental health. In this episode, Najat Maalla M'jid reflects on the importance of rapid intervention in cases of violence against children and the extraordinary courage and resilience of youth. "You hear some policymakers telling us our children are our future. They are not your future. You are the past; they are the present and they are their own future.”
We are in a mental health crisis and the pandemic has been the straw that broke the camel's back. According to Mental Health America, nearly 1 in 5 American adults have a mental health condition each year. 46 percent of Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition sometime in their life, and half of those people will develop conditions by the age of 14. Today, I'm joined by a woman who understands the severity of the lack of mental health awareness and aims to change that for kids and adults. She is Mandy Teefey, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Wondermind, CEO of Kicked to the Curb Productions, and mother to Selena Gomez. Drunk with passion and fueled by drive, Mandy is using Wondermind to change the narrative on how mental health is portrayed much like the acclaimed Netflix Series, Thirteen Reasons Why. Mandy is a Patron of Women in Film and is a member of the Producers Guild of America. Mandy's philanthropic endeavors include Alliance for Children's Rights, mentoring youth and Mental Health rights. She is a national organ donation reform advocate and has been working with bipartisan Congressional leaders including Congresswomen Ayanna Pressley, Katie Porter and Cori Bush to address urgent racial justice issues to help more patients receive life saving transplants. During her down time, she enjoys scavenger hunts, spending time with her family, going glamping and being an arm couch detective! In conversation with Ms Opal Sibanda The annual campaign for the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria is #Tech4Rights: Rethinking a human rights-based approach to new technologies in Africa. The campaign focuses on the impact of new technologies on different aspects of human interaction and the impact of technology on human rights. This campaign has a series of activities that look into technology in various specific areas. The use of digital technologies has become an essential aspect of most people's daily lives and children are not an exception to this. The digital space exposes children to new ideas and diverse sources of information. Using digital technologies also arguably exposes children to new opportunities to learn, reduces inequalities and contributes to the realisation of their rights such as the right to education, the right to privacy, freedom of expression, access to information and public participation. Adversely, the use of digital technologies also presents risks for children. The focus of the this episode is to contextualise the long term effects of internet use on children's well-being, to find ways to support a positive and effective use of digital gadgets in advancing children's rights and addressing inequalities in children's access to technology and to inform and guide policy makers, child rights activists and parents alike, on how to maximise the potential of technological advancement. Ms Opal Sibanda is an Assistant Legal Researcher at the Secretariat of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. She obtained her LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) from the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria in 2020. She has extensive experience in children's rights and has interests in juvenile justice and children's rights in the digital age. Anyone who has spent any time in Washington, DC, or cities like it, has experienced the phenomenon: a young man and woman walking down the street, pushing a stroller—but in that stroller, there's no baby. There's a dog. It's true. In so many circles the decisions surrounding family formation, and especially children, are becoming nothing more than another lifestyle choice. We are increasing drinking the kool-aid as a culture, that children, similar to pets or a new car, are little more than a symbol of status or achievement. But children are so much more. And while children are a part of a family, they are also endowed with rights of their own. Katy Faust, Founder and Director of Them Before Us, joins Tom Shakely and Noah Brandt to talk children's rights, bioethics, and how we can strengthen the American family Them Before Us: Children's Rights Before Adult Desires https://thembeforeus.com Them Before Us: Why We Need a Global Children's Rights Movement https://www.amazon.com/Them-Before-Us-Childrens-Movement/dp/1642935964/

Fulfilling the needs of end-users and involving them in the design process are fundamental principles of design. How well are these ideals applied when designing for children? By law children have a right to participate and a right to be heard in matters that concern them. However, it seems that there is a systemic bias excluding kiddos from our society to restricted areas, “kids' corners”, that are not really designed with children in mind. The reality is that children use most of the same tools, services and apps adults use. When children's perspectives are not taken into account as part of the design of our everyday things, we can't know what kind of experiences children are exposed to, nor protect them from harmful exposures. In this episode we talk about the role of legal design in designing for children with Jonna Tötterman, a Design Lead and Co-Founder of D4CR, Designing for Children's Rights Association. Jonna tells us why children should be considered as a stakeholder group by default, and how to make a kid participate in a design sprint. We also discuss why children's ability to navigate in the digital world is often overestimated, and why apps and other digital tools should be designed in a way that kids can use them without adult supervision.
How have New Zealand's COVID-19 lockdowns affected children's rights and wellbeing? Erin Gough (Office of the Children's Commissioner) and Carol Mutch (University of Auckland) introduce us to the range of experiences which children have faced during these unprecedented times, emphasising that children who were experiencing hardship before COVID are likely to have been further marginalised by the lockdowns. Erin and Carol also discuss the challenges and opportunities that disaster can bring in terms of hindering or furthering children's rights and wellbeing.

#freeouryouth Trigger Warning: per usual, this episode will include descriptions of violence against children and delve heavily into the systemically racist foundation of United States fostercare This is (hands down) our favorite episode and we could not be more thrilled to release it from the vault it's been waiting in since July. We are soo grateful to Erin McGuinness for her invaluable education. Children's Rights began as a project of the New York Civil Liberties Union and, later, the American Civil Liberties Union, and in 1995 became an independent nonprofit organization. We have won landmark legal victories in Connecticut, Georgia, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Washington, DC and Wisconsin and engaged in advocacy efforts that are changing the way child welfare is practiced in the United States. Children’s Rights is proving that failing child welfare systems not only can be fixed, but can be made to run well. Did you know that 53% of "black families" will be targeted and traumatized by a CPS intervention? We didn't either. It's time to face this Shadow and self educate. And if you happen to notice where we edited content out, please understand that we candidly discussed open legal cases and this is why we waited to release this episode - we just couldn't wait anymore. Our allies with Children's Rights will update us on the content we have to shh until then. So for those of you wondering what rights children have in the United States, join us. On this episode, Michael Torrance speaks with report co-author, Tytti Kaasinen Associate Director, Engagement Services at Sustainalytics and Simon Chorley, International Programs Manager at UNICEF Canada. In 2019, UNICEF and Sustainalytics partnered to develop Investor Guidance on Integrating Children’s Rights into Investment Decision Making. The resulting guidance is directed at investors and ESG research providers interested in exploring how companies and investors can mitigate risks and identify opportunities that advance children’s rights while generating both societal and upside financial benefits. It aims to help investors ensure that child rights impacts linked to business activities do not constitute a blind spot within their approach to responsible investment and active ownership. There are many things under threat during a national lockdown: jobs, availability of resources, access to education, to name a few. But there are people who are working hard to ensure that the rights of children are not on the list of things under threat. In this episode we hear from Angie Makwetla Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission Responsible for Children's Rights. She offers perspective on how children’s rights have been impacted by COVID-19 and the lockdown – and why she’s hopeful that we’ll emerge stronger as a nation on the other side of this pandemic. The United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda for sustainable development includes a strong commitment by all states to respect human rights. This covers the rights of the child. No action to implement the SDGs can be detrimental to the rights of the child. Healthy, well-nourished, well-educated children, who are protected from violence and abuse, are the best guarantee of long-term sustainable development. The EU prioritises children's rights and relevant SDGs in its external action. The European Parliament has repeatedly defended the need to protect and promote children's rights through EU external action, and has asked the Commission to propose a strategy and action plan in this sense. http://www.europarl.europa.eu/thinktank/en/document.html?reference=EPRS_BRI(2019)642285 Source: © European Union - EP

In this episode, we speak with Katy Faust, Founder and Director of Them Before Us. The organization was created to advance social policies that encourage adults to actively respect the rights of children rather than expecting children to sacrifice their needs to the desires of adults. Katy testified in March of 2019 in opposition to the creation of a commercial surrogacy market here in Minnesota. Plus, in the mailbag we answer questions about the "Equality Act" and why the U.S. bishops have come out strongly against this bill. And, we round out the show with our bricklayer segment. We're discussing how you can make your voice heard through writing on important policy issues that are impacting life and dignity.
In the United States, major movements for social change – from civil rights to freedom of expression – have drawn inspiration, participation and momentum from children. The case of Juliana v. U.S., in which 21 young plaintiffs are suing the federal government over its knowing perpetuation of a fossil-fuel driven energy system that causes climate change, is based on the needs and rights of the youngest Americans. The latest episode of No Ordinary Lawsuit explores the legal evolution of children’s rights in the context of this case and those that came before. What are "children's rights" and how do they overlap with the world of self-directed learning? Margie Sanderson, a 24-year-old board member of the National Youth Right Association (youthrights.org), talks with me about the different conceptions of children's rights (also called youth rights), the many ways of empowering young people to participate in society like adults, lowering the voting age, competency tests, letting students enroll and unenroll themselves in school, and the strange idea of forcing unschooling upon a child. If you have further questions, Margie invites you to email her directly: msanderson@youthrights.org.
