That doesn't include lobbying expenses for state legislation.  Just in the last year, gun rights groups spent a record $15.8 million on lobbying in 2021,  and $2 million in the first quarter of 2022.Then there's the campaign contributions.  Gun rights groups, including the NRA, use their Super PACs to elect gun-friendly candidates. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2021, marks the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. But it may very well be its last. In a few short months we face the likelihood the Supreme Court will overturn Roe. Already, 2021 was the worst year for abortion rights in almost half a century. We know it is time again.  (To add your name to the petition for safe, legal and accessible abortion and birth control, go to MsMagazine.com)In this episode, we discuss the relaunch of the iconic “We Have Had Abortions” petition, the history of the evolution of abortion access in the U.S. and the future of abortion rights in a possible post-Roe world.Joining us for this episode is a friend to Ms. and a signatory to the petition:Amy Brenneman, an Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor and producer best known for her extensive television work in shows like NYPD Blue, Frasier, Private Practice, The Leftovers, and Judging Amy, which she co-created and starred in. David Bohnett founded GeoCities in the 1990s, well before the internet attained its current ubiquity.  GeoCities became publicly traded on NASDAQ and was acquired by Yahoo! Inc. in 1999. In a 2007 article, the Wall Street Journal described it as a Facebook prototype and noted, “Back then, entries were known as home pages, not profiles. But the basic, expressive elements of today’s Facebook and competitor MySpace … were all right there.” David found himself wealthy with the ability to do whatever he wanted for the rest of his life. He became a philanthropist and social activist. In addition to serving as Chair of the David Bohnett Foundation, he is the Chairman of the Executive Committee on the Board of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Vice Chairman of the Board of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and Trustee of the Brookings Institution, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and the University of Southern California (USC). Since 1999, the David Bohnett Foundation has focused on several funding areas: The Fund for Los Angeles, supporting a broad spectrum of arts, educational and civic programs including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, LACMA and CicLAvia; LGBTQ-related causes; graduate school leadership programs at the University of Michigan, UCLA, NYU and Harvard; voting rights and registration initiatives; supporting research and public policies to reduce the toll of firearm violence; and animal research and rights. Grants totaling over $115 million to date have supported the work of a wide range of organizations including the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, The Wildlife Alliance, the ACLU Foundation, Equality California, and the David Bohnett Gay & Lesbian Leadership Fellows program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. The David Bohnett CyberCenters are another major undertaking — currently at over 60 LGBTQ centers nationwide, they offer business, educational, research, and recreational opportunities to the local gay and lesbian community via access to the Internet.   David Bohnett Foundation.  http://www.bohnettfoundation.org/   Something Ventured  https://somethingventured.us/

In this episode…Professor Allen Rostron, the Associate Dean of Students, William R. Jacques Constitutional Law Scholar and Professor of Law at the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Law, explains the First Amendment as it relates to freedom of speech and provides an outstanding analytical framework for those challenged with answering a free speech question on an exam or the bar. Some key takeaways are... 1. Speech is both verbal and non-verbal communication and includes images, instrumental musical communication or even tattoos. 2. The Government can regulate speech in certain instances.3. The government may always regulate obscenity. 4. In order to understand whether the government can regulate non-verbal speech one must look at intent and understanding5. The government can regulate Commercial speech, student speech and spending limits in limited instances. About our guest… Professor Allen Rostron teaches and writes in the areas of constitutional law, tort law, products liability, and conflict of laws. Before becoming a teacher, Rostron worked in Washington, D.C. as a Senior Staff Attorney at the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, where he was part of a nationwide litigation effort that included lawsuits brought against gun manufacturers by several dozen major cities and counties. Rostron began his career working as a law clerk for Judge Thomas S. Ellis III of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and then as a litigation associate at the Cravath Swaine & Moore law firm in New York City.Professor Rostron’s research and writing has had a significant impact on several areas of law. The Supreme Court of Wisconsin relied on one of his articles in a decision in which it became the first court in the nation to impose proportional or “market share” liability on manufacturers of lead paint. In another article, Professor Rostron suggested a new approach to regulation of high-powered sniper rifles, and that approach was subsequently enacted into law in the District of Columbia and incorporated into proposed federal legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate.
