As Second Amendment policy returns to the national spotlight under a second Trump administration, one provision buried in a massive reconciliation bill could spell the beginning of the end for suppressor regulations under the National Firearms Act. The House version removes them from the tax scheme entirely, while the Senate version goes even further—potentially gutting the $200 tax on other NFA-regulated items. Joining us is Knox Williams, president and executive director of the American Suppressor Association, to unpack what's in the bill, what could derail it, and how his organization is fighting to end suppressor bans and taxes across the country. Also discussed: the Biden-era legacy of regulatory overreach, Trump's executive order to review federal actions against 2A rights, and what gun control nonprofits like Giffords are doing to push back. Melissa Hortman, a Democrat, and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed at their home by a man impersonating a police officer. The attack comes amid a rise in political violence. Last year alone, Capitol Police investigated more than 9,000 threats against members of the U.S. Congress. Former U.S. Congresswoman Gabby Giffords knows the horrors of gun violence only too well. The Arizona Democrat was shot at a constituent event in Tucson in 2011.Now a leading gun safety advocate, Giffords speaks with host Mary Louise Kelly about how she is handling this moment and her thoughts on addressing the problem of gun violence. Send us a textThe communist-controlled Connecticut State legislature is attempting to pass yet another civilian disarmament law that they suppose will allow them to circumvent the PLCAA (Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act). Meanwhile, 19 of their fellow communists in Georgia were arrested in April for child sex trafficking, one of them being a former candidate for Georgia's 139th House District, who was lauded by the civilian disarmament cartels (Everytown, Commie Mommies, Giffords, etc.) as a "gun sense candidate", who also made online threats and calls for assassination against President Trump, while citing the 2nd Amendment as being the justification for his actions. The irony being that he was calling for the Secret Service to shoot Trump. But these are the people that want us to give up our guns to them? Contributing writer Jake Fogleman and I cover the big races where the national gun groups are pouring their money into before polls close on election night. We also discuss an interesting new ruling upholding Washington DC's magazine ban on unique grounds. We wrap up by covering Kamala Harris' recent comments in a podcast appearance attempting to cast Donald Trump as a threat to the Second Amendment. This week, we're discussing the final fundraising numbers we're going to see from the gun groups ahead of the election. To do that, we've got Hot Air's Ed Morrissey back on the show. He said he isn't surprised to see the gun-control groups outraising the NRA and its allies. He argued it would probably take several more cycles for former NRA donors to be comfortable enough to give to the movement again. He was skeptical the money advantage will translate to a big electoral advantage at the end of the day, especially in the highest profile races. And he said gun-control ads leaning on abortion issues, while potentially understandable, is a sign the groups don't think gun control is a top priority. Although, he also said the ability of the gun-control groups to spend big in local and state races could have a significant impact. He also gave his view of the effectiveness of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump's gun messaging in 2024, which was different from the views outlined by our previous guests, David French and Tim Miller. While neither Ed nor I make endorsements of candidates, we did briefly discuss our differing views of the dangers of either candidate. Gabrielle Giffords' new column for Newsweek is full of praise for Kamala Harris's work on "gun safety," but you won't find any mention of their support for a ban on so-called assault weapons, "red flag" laws, or Giffords' own call for "no more guns" that she made to a Time reporter last year.
We discuss the VP's stance on gun control and an editorial from former Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords as we wonder aloud which of our rights may be taken away in the future.

In a softball interview with Vanity Fair, Giffords' new executive director Emma Brown laid out a false narrative about the gun control movement and Second Amendment supporters, while laying out her group's plans for the future.
Every Saturday, we revisit a story that's in the news again. This originally aired on June 6, 2022. None of the dates, titles, or other references from that time have been changed. Mass shooting after mass shooting, Americans cry out for gun control, but more often than not, nothing is done. Why? Many Americans, including President Joe Biden, blame the gun lobby. We hear how America's most influential lobbying organization changed tactics in the 1970's and secret recordings that throw back the curtain on how they get business done. Bryan Strawser from the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus joins Cam with a firsthand report on a slanted symposium hosted by the University of Minnesota Law Review and sponsored by the gun control group Giffords, where anti-gun academics and activists were on hand to bemoan the Bruen decision and chart a way forward for their anti-rights campaigns.
Giffords executive director Peter Ambler is stepping down after ten years at the helm of the anti-gun group, and an exit interview he gave to Politico provides some interesting nuggets about how the gun control lobby operates, including its strategy of "radical incrementalism."

This episode is dedicated to the extraordinary Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her remarkable contributions to health, safety, humanity and the human spirit. Bonnie Lautenberg is an artist, photographer and writer. Her works have been featured in gallery shows, museums and art fairs throughout the country. In 2022, Lautenberg was appointed by the White House to the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts. Lautenberg is the type of artist who seamlessly communicates her seasoned life experiences through the lens of her camera and her digital canvas. Currently, she divides her time between New York and Palm Beach ‒ retaining the ties she nurtured in Washington, DC while she was the wife of the late Senator Frank Lautenberg. She has been described as “having enough Washington insider stories to fill a book.” Giffords Senior Advisor Debbie Mucarsel-Powell was the first South American-born immigrant ever elected to Congress. Debbie immigrated to the United States at the age of 14 with her mother and three sisters. When she was 24, Debbie's father was murdered, which led her to dedicate her life to advocating for commonsense gun reform. Debbie was elected to Florida's 26th Congressional District in 2018. In Congress, she focused on foreign affairs, education, healthcare policy, environmental sustainability, and gun violence prevention. She sat on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism & Homeland Security and served as Vice-Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, where she led efforts to pass the first gun safety legislation in 25 years. Debbie came to Congress with more than 20 years of experience at the FIU College of Medicine, FIU College of Health & Urban Affairs, FIU College of Social Work, Justice and Public Affairs, and Miami-Dade College, as well as experience at nonprofits providing social services, education, and environmental sustainability. Fluent in Spanish, Debbie is also available for Spanish-language media. As someone that has spent her life's work on expanding access to quality healthcare – impacting the lives of thousands, she knows that it's inconceivable that politicians in D.C. would consider ripping away healthcare access from our families. Debbie understands we must continue to improve on what's working and fix what's broken in our health care system, not abandon people who need it the most. Giffords (www.Giffords.org) is a leader in the movement to end gun violence in America. Led by the former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, the organization brings decades of political, legal, and policy expertise to the fight for gun safety. Nearly 50,000 people died from gun violence in the U.S. in 2021. This uniquely American crisis leaves no community untouched — but it doesn't have to be this way. From universal background checks to community-based violence intervention strategies, we know that there are proven solutions that will make our country safer. In statehouses and courthouses across America, we're taking on the gun lobby and winning. Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook in December 2012, the organization has helped pass more than 525 gun safety laws in nearly every state and Washington DC. Gun violence is a complex problem, and ending this epidemic will require a wide range of solutions. Giffords is committed to seeing this fight through, until the promise of a safe and just country is a reality for every person and community in America. The New York Times (with an assist from the gun control group Giffords) is hinting that gun owners shouldn't be allowed to purchase firearms or gun parts using "buy now, pay later" options by highlighting the case of a California man who was the victim of identity theft when crooks used his information to purchase thousands of dollars of parts and accessories.
Friday evening, just an hour or two after this show featuring a conversation with Leon Schagrin, an actual survivor of the Holocaust who was liberated at Auschwitz 78 years earlier, we saw the video of a group of police officers beat an innocent young man to death. Whether at a concentration camp in Germany under the orders of Hitler, or on the streets of the United States, we have witnessed the seeming unlimited capacity for cruelty that one human can inflict on others. I still had Leon's words swimming around in my mind, having a tough time reconciling the stories he told with this lovely old man talking with us over Zoom, unable to comprehend that level of brutality, savagery, of sadism, and thinking about how important it is that people listen to that interview. We must share the stories of Leon and the other survivors, and pass them down to future generations to insure that nothing like this ever happens again. But atrocities like those that emanated from Hitler and his followers do continue in places and sizes and permutations that civilized minds can't comprehend, and occasionally the tormentors, torturers and murderers are caught in the act. And that's what we witnessed Friday night when the video of the gruesome, horrific beating of Tyre Nichols was released. As this is our first gathering since we saw those images we can now never un-see, I thought we should open the phones and talk about it. 954-889-6410 is the number (or you can Skype in to nicolesandler). Meanwhile, in another corner of the unthinkable, mass shootings are back in the news and in our peripheral vision again. So of course, the fascist governor of the state of FloriDUH takes this opportunity to push for no-permit needed open carrying of weapons. Yes, that was introduced today in Florida's legislature. I'll talk with Samantha Barrios, the new Florida state director of Giffords.org, the organization founded by former Rep Gabby Giffords and her husband Sen. Mark Kelly to combat our big problems with guns.

Thursday, October 13th, 2022 Ryan Busse is a former firearms executive, Senior Policy Advisor to Giffords, and author of Gunfight: My Battle Against the Industry That Radicalized America. We discuss how guns are intricately interwoven through our democratic division and radicalization in our everyday lives and in our politics. The assault weapons ban helped codify societal norms. In the years after the legislation lapsed, the culture of hatred, division, fear, and conspiracy became widespread. In fact, this culture became useful to the NRA to drive political outcomes. Legislation that re-establishes norms of responsible behavior is critical to controlling radicalization. Busse argues that we can start with outlawing open-carry armed intimidation across the nation. A bipartisan group of Senates say they have reached a deal on a package of safety and gun-related measures. The deal is not yet done, but lawmakers say they are closer than they've been in a long time. The package includes measures to enhance background checks for gun buyers under 21, incentivize states to pass so-called "red flag laws," and fund school safety and mental health initiatives. Is it enough? We put that question to Gabby Giffords, a former congresswoman who was injured in a 2011 shooting. Since then, Giffords has dedicated her life to calling for action on gun control, co-founding Giffords, an advocacy group that promotes gun safety. The group's executive director, Peter Ambler, also spoke to NPR. Help NPR improve podcasts by completing a short, anonymous survey at npr.org/podcastsurvey. Today's episode is all about the debate surrounding gun violence and the path ahead for gun safety legislation. Jason, Ravi and Grace reflect on the tragedy in Uvalde, Texas and the gross negligence of the police response. They assess where Democrats falter on this issue, the revisionist history given to the Second Amendment and the unnerving future of states' rights on this issue.
