What work can genre do today? And can the genre system become more than a method of reductive containment and market segmentation—can it be a generative source of imaginative chaos? Few are as qualified to address these questions as Lauren Beukes, whose simultaneous embrace of genres from science fiction to crime to horror and refusal to abide within their borders—what she calls her “Big Fuck You Energy”—has rendered her, by her own account, “basically un-shelve-able.” Beukes is joined by crime fiction scholar (and novelist) Andrew Pepper of Queen's University Belfast for a conversation that dances across her oeuvre's many genres. They delve into how Beukes first encountered genre through the allegories that writers used to navigate the apartheid state of South Africa; how Beukes' experiences of femicidal violence and police apathy inspired her work in genre-bent crime (“At least in novels I get to have justice,” she tells us); the inflection of dystopia from different global perspectives; and the role of speculative fiction in helping clarify political enemies in an age of obfuscation. Pepper and Beukes also think about genre in more practical terms, from the logistics of keeping track of plotlines when crafting time travel or multiverse novels to what it means to be a “high concept” author in a market designed for distracted audiences. Mentioned in this Episode Lauren Beukes, Moxyland, Zoo City, The Shining Girls (and AppleTV adaptation), Broken Monsters, Bridge Margaret Atwood and speculative fiction China Miéville and the New Weird Kazuo Ishiguro Lauren Berlant Ivy Pochoda, These Women Danya Kukafka, Notes on an Execution Hannibal Lecter Crooked and Obscene Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho Charles Dickens, Great Expectations Rick and Morty Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Everything Everywhere All At Once E.L. Welcome back to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we discuss a popular request from our listeners about traveling with watches. We've discussed this topic before, but it's been a while since we last did so. For our listeners, we begin the watch content after 32 minutes. Traveling with watches is a typical topic on forums and boards. Some may think it's a tired subject, but with new collectors always entering the fray, the theme deserves more attention. Plus, with new schemes arising to defraud watch wearers, it is constantly on some folks' minds.HandgelenkskontrolleTo kick off this episode, we have a lengthy chat about Burns Night, television, movies, and shoes. Balazs mentions one of his favorite Scottish comedians, Kevin Bridges. We've been watching or awaiting titles such as The Night Agent, Nosferatu, Cross, Shining Girls, Paradise, Landman, and a documentary on Kimbo Slice on the VICE channel. Regarding shoes, the latest Nike Air Tech Challenge 2 retro tennis shoes worn by Andre Agassi are about to launch. We discuss the anniversary of Kobe Bryant's tragic death and mention the upcoming Nike Kobe V Protro "Year of the Mamba" shoes. For the Handglenkskontrolle, Mike is wearing his newly repaired Movado Curviplan with a black dial and an 18K gold case. Balazs is sporting a new release, the Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Diver in green. The piece is limited to 75 pieces with a date and the same number without the function for €956. Expect a review soon!Traveling with watchesSeveral people in our Discord group have asked about traveling with watches. It seems that the new year will bring heavy travel, and with watch friends all over the world, it's fun to bring a few watches to show and tell. However, is this the best idea? We discuss the pitfalls of packing precious timepieces for the trip. Safety, forgetfulness, how to pack, and more enter into the discussion. We hope you enjoy the episode and thanks again to our community for the topic suggestion! If you have ideas for future shows, please feel free to let us know!

Episode 102 - Stranger Things and Shining Girls And X-Men, Oh My! Or Andrew Learns About Mad Libs Back to their slightly less structured selves this week, the guys burn through an extended "what they've watched" segment. This, as you'd imagine, leads to some tangents and general shenanigans. It also leads to a remarkably interesting talk about the X-Men films. In the second half, they guys play some games of Pete's design that once again lead to some fun tangents. The show finishes off with a fun game of Mad Libs which, somehow Andrew has never experienced before. Canadians, amirite? As always, thank you for watching. We hope you enjoy this one and leave us a comment or two to let us know how great we are. Pete really needs your support. Andrew is great, so maybe you don't have to remind the other guys how much cooler he is. Kevin's a pain in the ass and probably needs your affection, but he'll never admit and will probably mock you for it. Andy wasn't here this week so you or your mom are welcome to leave a comment about how that effected either of you on an emotional level. It was probably traumatic one way or another. Oh and dont forget to like and subscribe!!
On today's episode we discuss our thoughts and feelings about Elizabeth Moss (most specifically because of Shining Girls on Apple TV+), Ms. Marvel's low viewer count, Drag Race All Stars Season 7's non-elimination setup, and dip our toes into the finale of Kenobi!
Introduction: Minutes 0 to 6:45 We'll have an episode out next week and then we'll be off on June 25th and July 2nd. We'll have one episode on July 9th and then we're taking off the 16th and the 23rd. Chandra worries we'll miss Prince William's birthday extravaganza on June 21st. I saw the Downton Abbey movie and liked it. There were weird filters on some of the actors though. Chandra finished Shining Girls on Apple and recommends it. My favorite show, P-Valley, is back on Starz. Chandra mentions that Megan Thee Stallion might make a guest appearance. (We know she did an original song for the show.) Royals: Minutes 6:45 to 25:00 Last week we talked about the Sussexes' triumphant appearance at the Jubilee service on Friday. It turns out that was all they did during the Jubilee apart from being behind the scenes during the balcony appearance. On Friday they met privately with the Queen and on Saturday they had a garden party for Lilibet's birthday. People magazine had a story with quotes from an insider who said the Sussexes "paid their respects and went home. They were really here to see the Queen." The Sussexes have shown that to be the case. There were so many think pieces about how the Sussexes were brazen for leaving quietly on Sunday and not going to any public events other than the service. They were called “detached” and “cold” by Dan Wootton in the Daily Mail. The Telegraph had quotes from an insider that there was no interaction between the Cambridges and The Sussexes. An insider said “a line was crossed” with the Oprah interview, that the Sussexes hadn't acknowledged the hurt they caused and that “someone needs to be steely in this.” Chandra says that the palace's messaging is out of kilter. It's clear that the Sussexes were the ones saying no to the invitations and keeping their heads high. She also says that there was a deliberate effort to keep the brothers apart. At the Jubbly parade on Sunday Kate wore a white belted coat and skirt, which was somewhat like Meghan's light lilac belted coat dress at the service. The Cambridges got the most headlines for little Louis, four, trying to shush his mom and pushing her hand away during the parade. Mike Tindall, who was seated behind them, said the kids were hopped up on sugar. George and Charlotte were in Wales with their parents for the Jubilee and did not look happy to be there We got an adorable photo of Lilibet on Monday afternoon, tweeted by a photographer at her birthday party named Misan Harriman. Chandra mentions that we haven't heard who else was at the party. After that photo came out we heard that Harry and Meghan were “banned” from taking any photos with the Queen when they saw her Saturday. There was another story in the NY Post that said the Sussexes just enjoyed a private moment with the Queen and that they didn't ask for photos. Harry and Meghan could set the record straight at any time with a quote or interview, and then the press would freak out about that too. I play a segment from Zoom where we talked about the royals. Harry and Meghan handled the Jubilee like bosses. Chandra thinks their security situation is still messed up. The big stories from the Jubilee were the Sussexes being unbothered, Kate and William being disconnected and Kate being flustered by their kid. The monarchy is boring without Harry and Meghan and will be boring without the Queen. We don't think Charles will be a terrible king though. Many commonwealth countries, like Australia, will leave when the Queen passes. Comments of the Week: Minutes 25:00 to end Chandra's comment of the week is from Miranda on the post about Kate being William's most trusted advisor. My comment of the week is from smegmoria on the post where Adam Sandler got a black eye from his phone. We talk about our random dumb injuries. Thanks for listening bitches!

We've got a HUGE episode for you this week with June and Melissa joining Kova, Spoiler Steve and Stephanie to discuss Netflix's Operation Mincemeat, Hulu's The Valet and Alex Garland's latest film, MEN! Introduction: Minutes 0 to 6:30 We recorded on Wednesday this time due to my schedule. We'll be off next week and back on June 4th and 11th hopefully. Chandra is watching Shining Girls on Apple+ and really likes it. She's also watching The Essex Serpent but is not sure about it. Royals: Minutes 6:30 to 25:00 On the Friday after we last recorded, the Sussexes confirmed through their spokesperson that they would be attending the Jubilee and would be bringing their children. Chandra was surprised that they're coming but not that they're skipping the balcony. Just prior to that announcement there was an official statement from the Queen that the balcony would be reserved for working royals. It's very likely this was Harry's idea so they could avoid that media circus. Omid Scobie reported that sources have long said that Harry doesn't want to be on the balcony. There's been a lot of hand-wringing about how the Sussexes are going to pull focus from the Queen along with the concern that they're going to bring Netflix cameras with them and will film at Frogmore Cottage. Chandra thinks the Sussexes will be respectful, but that they are filming a docuseries about their work, which was reported by Page Six after we recorded. The Queen did not go to the opening of Parliament this year due to mobility issues. That was attended by Prince Charles and Prince William. William had to walk behind Rose Hanbury's husband due to his role holding the Crown. William looked really mad but he always looks like that. There have been assurances that The Queen is in control of her faculties and is still making decisions, however it's unclear how much of her Jubilee she'll attend. She first canceled her appearance at the Royal Windsor Horse show last weekend, but she eventually showed up and was using a cane. She went on both Friday and Sunday to see the events. On Tuesday she was at Paddington station with Edward to open a new line called the Elizabeth Line. Queen Elizabeth was the first person to buy a ticket for the line during that appearance. A Black transit worker came to help the Queen use a touchscreen. When the man came close to her Edward touched him on the arm and told him to step back! It was demeaning and rude. Prince William went to the Football Association Cup final at Wembley Stadium last weekend. He was booed loudly by the crowd as he shook hands with the teams to open the match. Omid Scobie tweeted that some Liverpool fans blame the FA for mishandling the investigation of the Hillsborough disaster, which was a fatal overcrowding of an FA final in 1989 resulting in 97 deaths. Liverpool people also hate Tories for good reason and William is a Tory stooge. Some MPs condemned Liverpool fans for booing William while Liverpool's manager said the fans “wouldn't do if there was no reason.” Charles and Camila are now doing their whirlwind tour of Canada and there's not much interest in them. They seem to be trying to fly under the radar. There was a report on MSN that has now been pulled that Kate and William are separated. It's based on a translated report from a European tabloid and is likely just speculation based on what we've already heard, but it rings true given what we know about their living situation. The British tabloids have been building a case that they are separated. Comments of the Week: Minutes 25:00 to end My comment of the week is from Love Gossip on the story about Elon Musk making excuses about why he can't move forward with the Twitter purchase. Chandra's comment of the week is from Valerie on the same story. Thanks for listening bitches!
