Grammy Winning Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Matt Sorum shares his experiences as the drummer for iconic rock bands such as Guns N Roses, The Cult, and Velvet revolver. Sorum discusses his journey from drug smuggler to rock star, the peaks and valleys of his career, life on tour, and settling down to become a family man. On this episode, the Matts talk about: How Ringo Starr inspired him to get into drumming, his early career, and meeting his idol His early years drumming for many as 10 bands at once, playing up to 5 gigs a night Playing with other legendary musicians such as Slash, Axl Rose, Ian Astbury, and Scott Weiland Getting sober with Velvet revolver and how a return to partying derailed the band His transition from the hustle of Hollywood to the calm life of Palm Springs The importance of gratitude How becoming a father pushed him to quit smoking And more Sorum's tell-all book: Double Talkin' Jive: True Rock 'n' Roll Stories from the Drummer of Guns N' Roses, The Cult, and Velvet Revolver is available now. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, MusiCares operates a Mental Health and Addiction Recovery Program that recognizes those issues unique to music professionals at any stage of their career, offering eligible individuals financial assistance and resources for psychotherapy, coaching, and psychiatric expenses, inpatient and outpatient treatment, detox and sober living costs. About Matt Sorum Matt Sorum speaks through the drums. Each hit or kick that Sorum has committed to tape or knocked out on stage can be felt by anyone within earshot. Whether it's the epic percussive backdrop behind Guns N' Roses' "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" or the propulsive punked-out beat fueling Velvet Revolver's "Dirty Little Thing," Sorum's playing remains unique, undeniable and unforgettable. Matt Sorum is a Grammy-winning musician whose skills at the drum kit have earned him induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and helped to define the soundtrack to the City of Angels: from the propulsive wail of The Cult, to the wild excess of Guns N' Roses and the bellicose grit of Velvet Revolver. His reputation as a musician's musician has placed him squarely at the center of Hollywood's A-list community of artists. From Camp Freddy to Kings of Chaos, his side-projects have drawn a staggering number of fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famers — from Alice Cooper, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry (Aerosmith), to Billy F Gibbons (ZZ Top), Joe Elliott (Def Leppard), Robin Zander (Cheap Trick) and Brian May (Queen). The Long Beach native and his wife, Ace Harper, recently became parents to a daughter, Lou Ellington Sorum. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rick Beato is the kind of guy who will make you hopeful for humanity. After decades producing and teaching music, he's found a way to spread knowledge and joy to millions of people from his basement studio by showing us What Makes This Song Great. In the past few months, he's come to the attention of amazing musicians such as Brian May (Queen), Larry Carlton (Steely Dan), Pat Metheny, and Sting -- all of whom have sat down to talk about their musical lives with Rick, after realizing that he's not a journalist trying to understand music, he's a fellow musician who speaks their language. Carmine Appice on his early days with Cactus, Beck Bogart & Appice, Vanilla Fudge and eventually working with Rod Stewart and co-writing "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band‘s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. The Fudge had no precedent. The band was totally unique. No rock group, up until that point, had ever so lugubriously s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out well-known pop tunes like the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby” and “Ticket To Ride,” Curtis Mayfield‘s “People Get Ready,” Sonny & Cher‘s “Bang Bang” Rod Argent‘s “She‘s Not There” and, most famously, The Supremes‘ Motown classic “You Keep Me Hangin‘ On” to such hippie heights. With Mark Stein‘s mysterioso wash of Grand Guignol keyboard theatrics, Tim Bogert‘s amazing and trippy bass runs, and guitarist Vince Martell‘s era-happy soloing, Appice boomed like no other drummer in rock history. Their debut album still stands today as a Hard Rock classic. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act. Source CarmineAppice.netLegendary drummer Carmine Appice's GUITAR ZEUS is a compilation album featuring a who's who list of the best and world-renowned guitarists on the planet backed by his core band featuring Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder) on bass, Kelly Keeling (T.S.O., M.S.G) on vocals / keys / rhythm guitar, and Appice on drums.Originally released as two separate albums in 1995 & 1997 featuring Brian May (Queen), Slash (Guns N Roses), Neal Schon (Journey), Vivian Campbell (Def Leppard) Dweezil Zappa, Mick Mars (Motley Crue), Zakk Wylde (Ozzy) and many more! This new re-mastered album combines both releases as one complete version for the first time. It also features 5 brand new songs with Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, Pat Travers, John Norum, and top Japanese guitarists RaiZi and Char.“The Guitar Zeus project was an amazing experience that has never been done before by a drummer, especially with so much talent on one album!” – Carmine AppiceSource CarmineAppice.netThis episode is from an archive from the KPFK program Rock Profiles adapted for podcast. Andy Timmons Picks The Essential Brian May Andy Timmons shares his 10 Essential Brian May and Queen songs. Andy has been a lifelong Queen fan, even crediting Brian May with his discovery of harmony while studying songs from A Day At The Races as a young guitarist (a story he shares in this episode for the first time), but it was the recent success of the Bohemian Rhapsody film that inspired him to revisit the entire Queen catalog for a very serious, deep dive. Through sharing his ten essential Brian May/Queen songs, Andy tells great stories about connecting with these songs personally, the talent behind them and what sets these songs apart, the unique qualities of Brian's guitar tone, playing, and singing, even personal experiences of playing with a 1947 King George Sixpence - the same coin Brian famously uses to play his Red Special. We close out the episode with Andy's gorgeous solo guitar rendition of Queen's You Take My Breathe Away/Bohemian Rhapsody - a MUST hear!!
