In episode 272 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Rose Rowkins. Rose is the Founder of Start The Conversation.uk, a suicide prevention training organisation. Rose has had a hugely varied career and has worked in the mental health space for over two decades. She started by working at Samaritans in her early 20s and progressed rapidly to become a trainer of other people to become Samaritans. As a long-time Brighton resident, she then managed two mental health youth projects in the city, including ‘Safe Space' and the ‘Right Here' project. From there, she trained and worked as an English teacher, then later as a counsellor (working mainly with young people aged 13-25 and women affected by domestic abuse) and in 2015 as a suicide prevention trainer. Last year she was the volunteer lead for the Brighton leg of a seminal campaign called ‘Baton of Hope' run by Baton of Hope UK. The campaign travelled to 12 cities across the UK in 12 days, where 90 people affected by suicide or had personal experience of suicidality themselves, carried the baton across the city in a 27km route, which culminated in a showcase event at the Brighton Dome. Now, alongside providing suicide prevention training to a host of organisations, she is a Director of ‘Speak Their Name' (STN) which allows users to create digital memorial pages for loved ones who have died by suicide and provide them with a permanent legacy, like a digital patchwork quilt. In this episode we chart Rose's career and how it led to her involvement from Samaritans to Safe Space to Speak Their Name - and everything in-between. We then do a deep dive into the work that STN does, what it wants to achieve in supporting those bereaved by suicide and reducing the stigma. For Rose's mental health journey, we discuss: her perfectionism and people-pleasing she did in her childhood, the suicide of a family friend when she was a teenager and the impact that had on her career, her mental health struggles whilst working out in Australia and the suicidality that accompanied it. We finish by discussing motherhood, Covid-19. the importance of community and in Rose's words, ‘finding your tribe'. There's a video from last November featuring Billy Bragg speaking to the camera outside the Brighton Dome. He's nearly drown out by the sounds of chants – antivaxxers come to protest venue mandate. The singer is patient and thoughtful, laying out his own nuanced take on the situation. It's hard to imagine too many artists in his position being so generous with their time. This month, Bragg returns to the U.S. It's his first time touring the country since 2019 – his longest break since his began traveling across the Atlantic nearly 40 years ago. Many of the songs are new, but the messages are the same – empathy and compassion in an effort to spread hope during an era that can desperately use it. Hosted on Acast. The first-ever robotic surgery without a human surgeon guiding it has been successfully performed at Johns Hopkins University. The Smart Tissues Autonomous Robot (STAR) completed a keyhole procedure called intestinal anastomosis – the sewing together of two sections of soft bowel - on pigs. More than a million of these surgeries are performed each year in the US alone and they need to be carried out very precisely and accurately to avoid potentially fatal complications. Professor Axel Krieger, the mechanical engineer on the team, tells Gareth how this is a major advancement in robotic surgery. Singapore Surveillance Singapore often introduces innovative tech to its citizens, but there is a lack of transparency about the way the data is collected and used. As public tech becomes more affordable it is becoming increasingly available. While the hope is it will solve complex social problems there is no transparency over the algorithms used. This means we don't know the kind of prejudices, privileges, and assumptions being built in. Without intervention, societal prejudices will continue to be perpetuated. Peter Guest from the Rest of World website has been looking into the dangers of public tech in Singapore and beyond. He tells us why tech companies need to be more transparent. unReal City Backstage at the Brighton Dome looks more like the technical suite of a TV studio than a theatre, as technicians watch multiple screens showing the audience and actors in different rooms - and showing a variety of feeds from their VR headsets - because this piece of immersive theatre, unReal City, takes place in both physical and virtual reality. Reporter Claire Jordan has been meeting with the Director and disabled artists from Access All Areas - a learning-disabled theatre company - behind the production, which explores if it's easier or better to connect in the flesh or as an avatar and if links are stronger in reality or could the Metaverse allow us to re-invent ourselves. The programme is presented by Gareth Mitchell with expert commentary from Bill Thompson. After Corona? - FESTIVALS

There were 241 music festivals planned for 2020, but in the end fewer than 5% actually took place. We are a festival-loving country - from vintage car rallies, to the entire book world descending on the tiny village Hay-on-Wye, community carnivals and colourful civil rights celebrations to big multi-disciplinary months of culture like the festivals in Edinburgh and Brighton - the British know how to party. And here we are in 2021. We know that Glastonbury is out, but Reading and Leeds are in. Festivals might be only accessible to the vaccinated, but that's presuming people will want to get up close and personal at all, after a year of learning how not to. And it is not just the organisers, the venues, the contributors and technical crew impacted - but festivals are a clear marker of place and of identity. For some more remote places, like Shepton Mallett and Lulworth Castle, the annual calvacade of resellers might be welcomed through sometimes gritted teeth - but festivals are not just huge economic drivers for these beauty spots, but they connect tens of thousands of people with landscapes and parts of England they might not otherwise see. And they leave with good memories. Our desire to gather and collectively revel in shared interests will never die - but the economics of risk, and the sheer logistical apparatus of convening mass events have been rocked. Festivals cost a huge amount of money and take months and months of planning. What we understand festivals to be, may not actually be for some time. In this After Corona? episode, we're looking at the impact on UK festivals, how people have responded and what comes next. The special guests you'll hear recorded their contributions at different points over the past year - and I wanted to get a sense of mood and response to the changing landscape. Andrew Comben is the Chief Executive of both Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival, and 2020 would have been his 12th festival - working with guest Director Lemn Sissay. As I speak the 2021 festival is now launched - as a hybrid of digital, physical, outdoor and spectacle - but back in spring last year, when Andrew spoke to us, absolutely nothing was certain. Ros Green is the Director of the Essex Book Festival - a key cultural landmark every March in the East of England. I was working closely with Ros last year when the festival was curtailed whilst in full swing - yet innovation led to some surprising new ways of working. Joanna Hedges - who has since got married and changed her name to Goodey - is part of the always possible team as well as an extraordinary festival producer and events management expert with lots of hats on. She reflects here on what happens to a grassroots community when its big annual get-together is pulled. And Marion Leeper, is joining us from the East Anglian Story-telling Festival. And whilst the planned events of last year needed to change last minute, our need to share stories was not diminished one bit - so, perhaps, we just find new ways... --- Useful links: https://essexbookfestival.org.uk/ https://brightonfestival.org/ https://southwestfest.org.uk/ http://www.eastanglianstorytellingfestival.co.uk/ --- For more information on how you can get involved with The Possibility Club – an inclusive community of professionals working out what's next, have a look here > www.thepossibilityclub.org You can also receive Finding Chances, a free weekly letter from Richard Freeman, looking behind-the-scenes at business, culture, community and education by signing-up at www.findingchances.substack.com/ We'd love to know what you think of this podcast. Following a distinguished career in classical music, with both senior artistic and executive management credits, in 2008 Andrew was appointed Chief Executive of both the Brighton Dome arts complex and the Brighton International Festival. The Festival is now only second to the Brighton Fringe as the largest arts festival in England and brings an eclectic programme of dance, film, comedy, cabaret, music, theatre and visual arts to the south coast each May. Andrew is widely acknowledged to be one of the most influential cultural leaders in the UK, and he spoke to The Possibility Club podcast a few days before the opening of the 2018 festival to have a chat about his vision for the arts and place-making in these uncertain times. We talk about the evolution of the festival since its inception in 1967 and how every year Andrew programmes alongside a guest director - in the past this has included Anish Kapoor, Ali Smith, Brian Eno and Kate Tempest. We talk about the Dome and Corn Exchange as changing spaces for performance and community - and I reflect a little in my personal affinity with these hallowed halls. But then we then put this in the wider context of the identity of a city like Brighton & Hove. Can a place squashed between the sea and the South Downs, so defined by its mythology of music, politics and fashions every really live up to the hype - and what role does someone like Andrew have in steering the conversation? --- Useful links www.brightonfestival.org/ www.brightondome.org/ --- Please tell us what you thought of the interview on our iTunes and Soundcloud pages. Their joyous menagerie of past and future styles immediately put these hardworking musicians on ‘band to watch’ lists worldwide and sent their debut self-titled album into charts worldwide (eventually going Gold in the UK). Formed in 2013 by childhood friends J and T, they have expanded to a powerhouse seven-piece band to perform the music live, creating a spectacular on-stage effect. Our reporter Jack Claramunt went along to see them perform live at Brighton Dome. www.chrisgarrick.com   Christian Garrick is an improvising violinist, a composer and a bandleader. He is active on the international concert circuit and on the London studio session scene. He is a professor of jazz and non-classical violin at three of London's major music conservatoires. He has worked with artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Nigel Kennedy, Julian Joseph, Bireli Lagrene, Dolly Parton, All About Eve, Van Morrison, Luka Bloom, Martin Taylor, Brian Ferry & Caro Emerald. He has made tours of the Far East and Australia with guitarist John Etheridge in a tribute to Stephane Grappelli and in 2001 he toured Israel with Dame Cleo Laine and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. His performance at the Genius of the Violin Festival in 2004 led to invitations to perform Piazzolla's Seasons with Barry Wordsworth at the Brighton Dome and then in London, at the Royal Festival Hall, in 2008. He has toured and recorded extensively with Parisian guitar virtuoso Angelo Debarre and is a member of Alec Dankworth's Spanish Accents.  He formed the band Spirit O' Stephane to celebrate the music of Grappelli. He works frequently in film and television for composers such as Danny Elfman, Anne Dudley, Howard Shore, George Fenton, Rachel Portman, Stephen Warbeck, Mark Thomas and Rob Lane.   I sat and chatted with Chris in the house he was staying in just outside of London. We covered mainly his musical upbringing by his jazz pianist father Michael Garrick and his outlook on music and life in general! Chris is a lovley dude and I had a great time chatting with him. Hope you enjoy listening.     The intro music  is Garrick and David Gordon playing 'Broadway/Afternoon in Paris' (William-Henri-Woode/John Lewis) From their album Paper Jam. The outro music is Benny Golsons 'Whisper Not' recorded by me and my band Latchepen

Writer Lady Antonia Fraser; comic and actor Stephen K Amos; travel writer Christopher Somerville and poet Inua Ellams join Libby Purves. Stephen K Amos is a comedian and actor. His Radio 4 series What Does the K Stand For? tells the story of his teenage years in 1980s South London. Stephen's parents came from the same town in south-west Nigeria, but met as adults in Lagos and emigrated to the UK in the late 1960s. Stephen is currently performing his new stand-up show. He has performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe every year since 2003, after making his début in 2001. During the 2006 Fringe, he performed the revealing solo show All of Me, in which he publicly acknowledged his own homosexuality to his audience for the first time. What Does the K Stand For? is broadcast on BBC Radio 4. Antonia Fraser is a writer and award-winning biographer. In 1978 she made a trip to Israel with her late husband, the playwright Harold Pinter. In her book, Our Israeli Diary, she recalls their experiences visiting the country during the 30th year of its founding - the first time either of them had travelled to Israel. She writes about the underlying tensions facing the country and their experiences spending time at some of its historically significant sites, revealing insights into the couple's relationship along the way. Our Israeli Diary - Of That Time, Of That Place is published by Oneworld. Christopher Somerville is a travel writer and the walking correspondent for The Times. In his latest book, The January Man, he retraces the paths he first walked along with his late father, John. His father was a senior civil servant at GCHQ in Cheltenham who never spoke about his work or his wartime experiences, but was a great walker. It was through their shared love of walking that father and son developed a bond that lasted until John's death. The January Man - A Year of Walking Britain is published by Doubleday. Inua Ellams is a poet and playwright who won the Edinburgh Fringe First Award in 2009 with his play The 14th Tale. Born in Nigeria to a Muslim father and a Christian mother, his latest one-man show, An Evening with an Immigrant, tells his story - of leaving Nigeria to performing solo shows at the National Theatre, all the while without a country to belong to or place to call home. An Evening with an Immigrant is touring the UK beginning at Brighton Dome. Producer: Paula McGinley.
