Dorington of Lypiatt Park, Stroud he was educated at Windlesham House School, Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. Dorington was returned to parliament for Stroud in a by-election in early January 1874. He lost his seat almost immediately in the general election commencing in late January 1874. However, the election was declared void in April 1874 and Dorington was returned again in the subsequent May by-election. He again lost his seat when this election was declared void in July 1874. He has created a baronet, of Lypiatt Park in the parish of Stroud in the county of Gloucester, in January 1886. In July of the same year he was once again returned to parliament, this time for Tewkesbury, and held the seat until his own death in 1911.In December 1886 he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Gloucestershire. He was appointed a Privy Councillor on 11 August 1902, following an announcement of the King's intention to make this appointment in the 1902 Coronation Honours list published in June that year. He continued to represent Tewkesbury in parliament until 1906. His death in April 1911, aged 78. The British Conservative government has for some time embarked upon a project to make life difficult for ordinary Muslims. We have spoken previously about its policy of Prevent, an extraordinary state plan to compel all public servants to monitor Muslims in their midst and report on them if they showed signs of extremism. This project has enveloped the community within a cloud of suspicion, spread fear and self censorship and led to a series of malicious or ignorant allegations that has scarred thousands. The project has failed to root out violent extremism and has alienated a large number of Muslims, yet the response of the government is to tighten the screws. It's failure is because it is not punitive enough according to the Home Secretary. This is where the new Shawcross review comes in. William Shawcross, known for his anti-Islamic opinions was cynically commissioned to lead an independent review into Prevent and suggest a way forward. The report suggests that normative Muslim positions should be viewed with suspicion, including believing that Islam should be the basis of one's identity. Dr Layla Aitlhadj, my guest today, has been a tenacious campaigner to expose the extent of to which the government has violated the most basic rights of ordinary Muslim citizens. Her organisation Prevent Watch has helped countless Muslim families that have been caught up in this net of accusation. The 18th century British parliamentarian and philosopher Edmund Burke is routinely referred to as "the founder of modern conservatism", and at a glance it's not hard to see why. He believed in the authority of tradition and inherited values, staunchly opposed the French Revolution, and was in many ways out of step with the Enlightenment humanism of his day. But on closer inspection, Burke can look a little different. This week we're considering Burke as a reformer, even a progressive - and someone who would probably take a very dim view of the modern British Conservative party.

Essex police said a 25-year-old man was quickly arrested, after officers arrived at the scene on suspicion of murder and a knife was recovered. A sympathetic, if problematic, account of Chamberlain’s life written by a British Conservative minister that explores in detail Chamberlain’s early reforms. -Frank McDonough, 'Neville Chamberlain, Appeasement and the British Road to War' (Manchester, 1998). A classic account of Chamberlain and his political career. It presents a very different view of Chamberlain to Macleod. -Peter Neville, 'Neville Chamberlain: A Study in Failure?' (1992). Peter Neville’s book a short but enticing introduction to Chamberlain’s life and is particularly suited for A-Level students. At the end of each chapter, Neville offers a series of exercises designed to explain some of the issues Chamberlain faced. -Jonathan Schneer, 'Ministers at War: Winston Churchill and his War Cabinet' (London, 2015). With enviable style, Schneer produces a history of high politics that reads at times like a well-written political thriller and he brings to life many of the rich personalities that clashed so frequently during the war. Of course, Churchill’s own account of events is worth reading (even if it requires a slight pinch of salt). For his account see his 'The Second World War: Volume II: Their Finest Hour' (1951).

The British Conservative grassroots have voted Boris Johnson for leader in large numbers because they believe he has the charisma, showmanship and, incidentally, views on Brexit to ensure Britain leaves the European Union successfully on October 31. As a result, the Tory rank-and-file members believe their re-born party will win the next general election handsomely. However, Simon Heffer has serious doubts. Such has been the British Conservative government's attempts to leave the European Union by April 12. Meanwhile, the Tories under Prime Minister Theresa May plunge into one melodrama after another. The British Labour Party under socialist Jeremy Corbyn has vacillated and equivocated over Brexit. As for the British public, their trust in Westminster has dissipated dramatically since the 52%-48% referendum to leave nearly three years ago. A NEW CAREER. George Osborne is a British Conservative politician who was a Member of Parliament from 2001 to 2017. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer under David Cameron from 2010 to 2016. When he left politics George Osborne didn’t want to walk away from the national conversation and he has been editor of the London Evening Standard since May 2017.
