Today we sit down with the incredible Cait Flanders to explore what it really means to live an intentional life. Cait, author of The Year of Less and Adventures in Opting Out, shares her journey of opting out of societal norms, creating life on her own terms, and learning how to navigate her way through sobriety, minimalism, and self-compassion. Cait opens up about her decision to quit drinking, her shopping ban that led to a massive decluttering of her life—both physically and emotionally—and the tough but necessary journey of finding clarity through less. This is an episode about finding peace in simplicity, courage in self-awareness, and learning how to let go of what no longer serves us. Episode Highlights:[02:27] - Letting go of relationships and finding peace with personal boundaries.[06:12] - Societal pressure and opting out of the social “noise”.[06:30] - Welcoming Cait as she joins us to share her story firsthand.[07:55] - Cait's shopping ban: how decluttering and minimalism started her journey.[11:34] - Evolving from financial goals to a deeper emotional transformation.[15:37] - Navigating sobriety and finding healthy coping mechanisms.[18:26] - Facing raw emotions during the year of less and embracing vulnerability.[24:15] - Cait's dad on sobriety: “It's so much better on this side”.[26:35] - Self-compassion and letting go of shame for past choices.[31:20] - Cultivating resilience and self-trust through intentional change.[35:49] - Embracing emotional growth and self-connection to enrich relationships. Connect with Cait Flanders:Website: https://www.caitflanders.com/ Newsletter: https://caitflanders.substack.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/caitflanders  For more on this topic visit our website insightsfromthecouch.org If you have questions please email us at info@insightsfromthecouch.org we would love to hear from you!If today's discussion resonated with you or sparked curiosity, please rate, follow, and share "Insights from the Couch" with others. Snippet From the Show “When it comes to our spending habits, sometimes the most important thing we need is information.” Whether it's because of inflation or your growing family, as we look ahead to Thanksgiving and Christmas, many of us are facing tighter budgets this year. Danielle is sharing some reminders of simple ways that we cut back a bit and save some money this month: No-Spend Challenge Challenge yourself to not spend money (beyond essentials) for a set period of time. You might try a week, 10 days or a month. An inspiring book on this topic is The Year of Less by Cait Flanders. Wait If you think you want to buy something non-essential, just wait 30 days before purchasing it. You might be surprised to find you no longer want it. Use an app Whether you use an app that automatically moves some of your money into savings, one that finds bargains for you, or one that shows you what subscriptions you can cancel, technology is a great tool for saving money. De-clutter and sell Go through your closets and garage, find items you no longer need or use, and sell them on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Bonus is that you get free clean space in your home! Meatless Mondays If you usually eat meat, pick a day of the week to plan one more meatless meal and save on groceries. Plan meals Do a little work ahead of time to plan budget-friendly meals and reduce the number of times you go to the grocery store or order take out. Check out the library Many libraries offer more than just books! Stop by and see what free offerings you might be missing. At the end of today's show, Danielle shares a voice message from listener Lisa who listened to our recent episode 5 Ways to Make Every Day More Catholic and has an idea of her own to share. "I actually want this (Substack) to be something that other people truly do see themselves in. Like, it's outside of me. Yes, I'm managing it, and I'll still write stories, including personal stories, but it's not just about me. It's more about topics that I have personal experience with."Cait Flanders✨Welcome back to the Sparkle on Substack podcast where we explore what it means to be creatives who also write. In this episode, I'm joined by , a super talented writer, author and editor behind the newly renamed Substack publication Cait takes us on a journey through the evolution of her publication here on Substack (and what came before) and shares incredibly generous insight along the way. It was a JOY to spend time with her at the end of summer… I feel like I also got a beautiful mentoring session as part of the pod recording too. I adore her approach as you can tell and I think you will too!In this episode... We dive into Cait's decision to change the name of Substack from Hi Friend to Explore Within, and the profound implications it has on the content she creates and the community she fosters. As Cait explores the direction of her publication, she reflects on a previous job as a managing editor and how it influenced her approach to working with writers. I loved hearing Cait share her vision of creating a publication that resonates with others, encouraging them to see themselves reflected within its pages.Cait also delves into the challenges of managing contact methods and cutting off social media platforms to alleviate burnout and focus on her writing projects. We chat about our (sometimes complex) relationship with ‘ Notes' too. I loved hearing more about Cait's past experiences, including the release of her first book, "The Year of Less," and the impact it had on managing ‘presence' online. I quiz Cait on online boundaries, managing viral energy and “versions” of ourselves online. You can buy Cait's BRILLIANT books wherever you are in the world via her website. Author Cate Flanders visits Google to discuss her book “The Year of Less”. In her late twenties, Cait found herself stuck in the consumerism cycle that grips so many of us: earn more, buy more, want more, rinse, repeat. Even after she worked her way out of nearly $30,000 of consumer debt, her old habits took hold again. When she realized that nothing she was doing or buying was making her happy, she decided to set herself a challenge: she would not shop for an entire year. "The Year of Less" documents Cait's life for twelve months during which she bought only consumables such as groceries, toiletries, and gas for her car. Along the way, she challenged herself to consume less of many other things besides shopping. She decluttered her apartment and got rid of 70 percent of her belongings; learned how to fix things rather than throw them away; researched the zero waste movement; and completed a television ban. At every stage, she learned that the less she consumed, the more fulfilled she felt. This challenge became a lifeline when, in the course of the year, Cait found herself in situations that turned her life upside down. In the face of hardship, she realized why she had always turned to shopping, alcohol, and food—and what it had cost her. Unable to reach for any of her usual vices, she changed habits she'd spent years perfecting and discovered what truly mattered to her. Blending Cait's compelling story with inspiring insight and practical guidance, The Year of Less will leave you questioning what you're holding on to in your own life—and, quite possibly, lead you to find your own path of less. This week, I get really vulnerable about current life events and my emotions surrounding them. Some deep reflections revealed that my current cashflow plan does not align with my core desired feelings of feeling energized, calm, and connected. After reading The Year of Less by Cait Flanders for our community book club, I recognize that the clothes in my closet were bought for the woman I was- these clothes no longer fit me or my daily life. In fact, these clothes are restricting me from the life I want to live. So, I'm taking my own advice- I'm investing in the person I am today so I can live the life of my dreams. Part of that means, buying clothing for the woman I am- in the body I have. Since my expertise is in cashflow plans, not style, I'll be investing in some time with @katieallenstylist for help. Whether she is adventuring through the experimental changes in her everyday life or adventuring around the globe, Cait Flanders has created a life led by bold choices. Luckily for us, she has chronicled it all in her newest book, “Adventures in Opting Out” and is chatting with me today about what happens when we reframe our choices as adventures.  The majority of self-help books may assist in inspiring you to make significant changes in your life. They might even detail precisely how to execute them. But then what? What happens when we get the sinking feeling that maybe we made the “wrong” choice? Or when those closest to us don't understand or respect what we're called to do. What if life is just fine and yet we feel called to change it anyway? Cut to Cait's book and today's episode, shedding light on these doubts and helping to embrace the discomfort that may show up, even when we're moving in the right direction.  Resources mentioned:  Read The Year of Less: How I Stopped Shopping, Gave Away My Belongings, and Discovered Life Is Worth More Than Anything You Can Buy in a Store by Cait Flanders Read Adventures in Opting Out: A Field Guide to Leading an Intentional Life by Cait Flanders Follow Cait on Instagram Get on the early-bird waitlist for Grown-up Gap Year! The Meaning Movement: Helping You Find Your Calling, Create Your Life's Work, and Make Career Change

When Cait Flanders decided to stop spending money for a year, everything changed.  What started as a personal experiment with money, turned into a transformational journey and ultimately a book deal. Today on the podcast, I dig into that experience with Cait, along with things like money, debt, and how important it is to define success for yourself, your work, and especially your money. I was floored by Cait's honesty at so many moments in the interview— as I'm sure you'll hear.  She speaks the truth with humility and courage.  I left feeling very moved and inspired, and think you will too.   In this episode you'll learn: What Cait does? How she gets to do the amazing things she does How to be a great freelance writer Her journey to become a full-time freelancer What she did before writing How to talk about finances with family How she looks at debt and having debt Reasons why we don't talk about debt How she faced her debt head-on How to start the journey of dealing with debt Cait's view on a balanced approach towards saving Why she doesn't save 20% of her income How writing her book shaped her thoughts about spending money How Cait deals with money now Important questions you should ask yourself before spending What are the things Cait buys now that differ from the past Why and when to buy things What do calling, career, and passion mean for Cait? What is the sense of writing of what it is she has to say? What is her advice for people who are facing personal debt? Show notes at: https://www.themeaningmovement.com/cait/
