Aaron Kindle, the Director of Sporting Advocacy at the NWF, hails from Wyoming. His previous tenure at Trout Unlimited saw him deeply involved in public lands issues. A graduate from Gunnison, Colorado, with an M.S. from the University of Montana, Aaron, now based in Salida, CO, is an ardent outdoor lover. His role at the Federation zeroes in on hunter/angler conservation efforts, emphasizing the preservation of public lands, endorsing responsible energy practices, and fostering pro hunting and angling directives. Bill Cooksey, the Sportsmen Outreach Coordinator for the NWF, has his roots in the river bottoms of West Tennessee. His early years were marked by a fervor for hunting and fishing, having explored duck hunting across all flyways and fishing from East Tennessee to the Pacific. His hunting escapades as an adult spanned from prairie Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and from the Chesapeake to the California Delta, with the Mississippi Flyway holding a special place in his heart. Bill's professional journey in the outdoor sector saw him evolve from selling duck calls to being the Marketing Director at Avery Outdoors, and subsequently, the Managing Editor of the Mid-South Hunting & Fishing News. Captain Chuck Ragan From lakes and rivers of Texas, E. Tennessee & N. Georgia., bayous of SW Louisiana or the inshore/offshore salt and freshwater of Florida, Ragan grew up chasing fish. With a Cajun mother and Florida boy father, both avid anglers, he held a rod early on and though the Ragans moved often due to his father's profession as a Veteran PGA pro, teacher and coach, the road always ended in water. Aside from their parents, Chuck and brother Paul fished aside paternal grandparents on the intercoastal of Daytona Bch. and maternal grandparents around Holly Bch. In Louisiana and along the Blanco River outside of Kyle, Tx. Fishing became a way of life in the family. Father Dave Ragan always seemed to relocate the family around prime fisheries whether he meant to or not and having a mama born and bred into it didn't smother the flame one bit. As a teen, he fished bass lakes, beaches, inlets and canals in Sarasota on the Gulf of Florida. With itchy feet in 94, he left for Gainesville, FL. unknowingly continuing what would end up being his music career. As his band Hot Water Music became an international touring machine, Ragan saw the world. Moving to Gainesville followed by Micanopy in early 2000, he learned from Kip Street & Bill “The Gill” Sorton, new methods of angling and woodwork. When not working, you'd find him off the coast of Saint Augustine, Cedar Key or Shellmound chasing Redfish, offshore winching grouper or poling lilies after heavy bass and striper on Rodmans, St. Johns or the Suwannee River. In early 2000, Ragan left the South for California to marry Jill and continued a trade in carpentry, songwriting and fishing Pacific waters. He kept touring, this time with fishing rods in tow. As an angler and traveling musician, Ragan takes advantage of being in prime zones to fish and share music across the globe. Relocating to Grass Valley, CA. in 07, he continued his career in music and began exploring the waters of Northern California through the end of a fly line. Encouraged by peers Matt “Gilligan” Koles, Hogan Brown, Clay Hash and Tom Page, Ragan became a licensed guide and vowes that it was the organization called Cast Hope that was the driving force behind finally taking that step along with having kids in the scope for the future. Ragan began slowing down on touring with his music and began guiding for the non profit organization Cast Hope www.casthope.org to help give a new perspective to kids who've yet to find the passion and reason to protect our naturalresources. Always positive and fired up, he lives to see people light up when their rod bends and believes in giving others the knowledge of the outdoors, fly fishing, teamwork, independent confidence and the importance of respect and conservation for all to carry and pass on themselves. Jill and Chuck had their first child and future deck hand, Grady Joseph in May of 2015 and began slowing down even more in the touring world and focusing mainly on guiding. Now as a USCG licensed Inland OUPV Captain and California fly fishing guide that focuses on Sacramento Valley Rivers, lakes and reservoirs in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range and The California Delta, Ragan loves sharing fun and joy on the water. Always in pursuit of largemouth, smallmouth, striper, spotted bass and shad on the fly as well as the wild trout and steelhead of the Yuba and Feather Rivers, Ragan is just as eager to put people on a fish as he is to catch them himself. Previously, she was the Director of K-12 Advocacy at UNCF (United Negro College Fund), the nation's largest and most effective minority education organization. There, she focused on national education initiatives and community engagement efforts to ensure more African-American students are college and career ready. Ms. Shelton also spent several years working in Washington, DC's Executive Office of the Mayor and in several District agencies. She spearheaded efforts to improve online access to city services and greater efficiency between departments. A life-long resident of Washington, DC, Ms. Shelton also worked in the private sector, providing project and crisis management, and public relations counsel. About Lorenza Wine TWELVE YEARS AGO… Lorenza Rosé was founded in 2008 by Melinda Kearney, a wine industry veteran from Napa Valley and her daughter Michele Lorenza Ouellet, an international fashion model. Sharing a love of the beautiful Provençal Rosé, they set out to create in California a wine of intention that was vineyard driven, delicate, dry, low alcohol and full of light. In 2008 they hit the road, destination Lodi with a phone number of someone they hadn't yet met. Old vines they believed would lend the wine complexity and authenticity and would feed their desire to create a wine of substance–something real. Strangers became friends and doors generously opened to the outstanding vineyards that have been the source of Lorenza True Rosé. The sandy soil of the California Delta is home to the old vineyards that provide the grapes from which Lorenza is made. The Bechthold Vineyard Cinsaut was planted in 1847. Spenker Ranch, the original source of Carignan was planted in 1906. Head trained, own rooted vines, weathered and with stories to tell, these vines are central to the blend which was inspired by the Bandol icon, Domaine Tempier. Hand picked, direct to press with fermentation in separate stainless steel tanks allows the individual lots to develop and express their beauty fully before the final blending. The first vintages caught the attention of sommeliers who were looking for an American-made, Provence-style Rosé. The wine continues to deliver a consistent flavor profile with a sun-kissed mineral driven palate, 11% alcohol and pale hue. https://www.lorenzawine.com/purchase --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/support

CheapWineFinder Podcast
Beringer Founders Estate Pinot Noir 2017

CheapWineFinder Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 18, 2019 11:11

The StoryThe Beringer Founders Estate Pinot Noir 2017 is the #1 wine on Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Best Buy Wines of 2019. And that is somewhat remarkable. Beringer is the oldest (since 1876) continuously operating winery in the US and they produce a lot of wine, from $400 bottles to $4 bottles, they run the gamut. The Founders Estate Pinot Noir is not the typical wine that leads best-of lists (I have not tasted it yet, I do the tasting notes in real-time). First, it is a Pinot Noir that I found on sale for $7.99, second, most of the grapes (along with a smaller portion of grapes from coastal Central Coast AVA) are sourced from multiple vineyards in the California Delta region. The California Delta region is basically the Clarksburg AVA and the Lodi AVA, they are about 100 miles from the Pacific Ocean. They are wine grape growing regions because of the San Pablo Bay, which is the bay north of the San Fransico Bay and is far enough inland that its influence can reach those areas through rivers and valleys. Neither AVA is known for Pinot Noir.Value-priced (cheap) labels from giant wineries, featuring grapes from non-buzz-worthy Pinot Noir growing regions and nothing out of the ordinary production techniques. It is aged for 5 months "on" French oak, what does "on" mean in this setting? I thought you aged wine "in" barrels, is "on" some winemakers term or does it mean something else. Actually, I don't expect a sub-10 buck wine to see oak barrels, it does happen from time to time, but the oak influence can come from oak staves or chips with inexpensive wine.I am not trying to be negative, because I am intrigued. #1 wines on Top 100 lists tend to be some wine from France or Italy that you can't find in any wine shop. Not that the Beringer was easy to find, I figured since it hit the top of the Best Buy 2019 list every store would feature it with a sign saying #1, but I had to visit 5 shops to find it and it was on the bottom shelf behind a kiosk of some other wine. I guess accolades don't count for much anymore, but when I read it took the first spot, I knew I had to see what was what. The alcohol content is 13.9%.The Tasting NotesThe color is crystal clear, see-thru garnet red. The nose is ripe fruit and funky herbs, there is ripe cherry, mushroom and a distinct herbal scent, oak spice, vanilla, slightly sour cranberry, and a faint hint of smoke. Ok, I kind of get it, it has a distinct mouthfeel, smooth, but with an edge and interesting flavor. It tastes of black cherry, spice, a little black pepper, chocolate powder, and ripe plum. The mid-palate shows tart cranberry and vanilla cream, along with soft herbs and orange zest. The tannins stay out of the way and the acidity does a good job of allowing the ample flavors to unfold. The finish is soft and does linger for a while. The Summary First of all, we at Cheap Wine Finder have known for some time that on the best, if not the best, inexpensive red wine was California Pinot Noir. In the last few years, cheap Pinot Noir has blossomed. Is the Beringer Founders Estate Pinot Noir 2017 my personnel #1 wine of 2019? No, but I am glad I gave it a try. It is more on the Meiomi side of Pinot Noir, which I like, but it isn't my favorite style of Pinot Noir. If you like your Pinot Noir full of ripe and juicy cherries, herbs, and spice, yet nicely focused, then the Founders Estate might be your #1 wine.                                                         Check out the companion podcast below
