"Take their mics, take their PCs, take them where there are no podcasts, they don't care, they'll still watch movies, you can't take the cinema from them." If you ever watched the very short-lived, but super beloved TV show Firefly you tried terribly to match those lyrics to the theme song. The Mikes are podcasters, not lyricists. Speaking of podcasters, the Mikes are joined by fellow podcaster John Amenta of https://www.stitcher.com/show/pint-o-comics (The Pint) podcast, long-time friend of the show and first-time guest (though the Mikes have taken over The Pint a couple of times and you should check those episodes out). Mike Butler, Mike Field, and John take a look at the Firefly spin-off film Serenity. A fantastic sci-fi film in its own right; this crew will discuss some of the small gripes they have with the plot and dated special effects, whether the film can be watched without having seen the TV show, as well as the fantastic writing, phenomenal performances (especially by https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0252230/?ref_=tt_cl_t_3 (Chiwetel Ejiofor)) and story. For those that don't know, Serenity is about a group of outlaws on the outskirts of a distant solar system aboard their ship, Serenity. After ex-military officer-turned outlaw, Captain Malcolm Reynolds (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0277213/?ref_=tt_cl_t_1 (Nathan Fillion)) and his crew takes in Simon (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0536883/?ref_=tt_cl_t_8 (Sean Maher)) and his psychic sister, River (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1132359/?ref_=tt_cl_t_9 (Summer Glau)), whom he has just rescued from the treacherous Alliance forces, they are pursued by the Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor), an Alliance agent who will stop at nothing to find them. It's not easy to find freedom in an unfree world. So much of what's happening seems to be out of our control. Kent McManigal reminds us that authentic freedom starts in our minds and hearts and flows outward from there. One of the greatest lines ever spoken is from the film Serenity when Captain Malcolm Reynolds declares: "I aim to misbehave." Larry L. Beane has a great take on what that means to people of faith in our time. With all eyes focused on the Electoral Collage which will meet next week to cast its votes, Thomas Luongo has a message worth considering: "Less Electoral Collage? No, More Electoral College" Many of us have watched with concern as our police have been slowly transforming from peace officers into militarized enforcers. Brad Polumbo lays out the facts that all that military equipment finding its way into our local police departments isn't reducing crime or making us safer. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support

Dave and Ian kick off 2019 with a new show: Joss Whedon's Firefly. In "Serenity," Captain Malcolm Reynolds and the crew of his ship, Serenity, struggle to scrape a living. After they are nearly caught while pulling an illegal salvage operation, Mal is forced to trade the goods on a remote moon with someone who shot him last time they met. Things are made even more complex when several of the ship's passengers turn out to be more than they seem. In "The Train Job," Mal agrees to pull a heist for a very dangerous gangster, but after having pulled it off finds that he can't handover the goods because it's much-needed medication. They also commit to making the character of Jayne sound more British, and Ian finds himself unable to distinguish between River Tam and Summer Glau.

In this episode, we get a look into the journey of Spiritual Entrepreneur and Successful Podcaster, Lauren Gaggioli. Lauren is the founder of Higher Scores Test Prep & Host of The College Checklist Podcast After graduating from New York University with her B.F.A. in Theater, Lauren moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. To make time for auditions during the day, she called upon her academic roots from her high school days and began tutoring the SAT and ACT. She quickly fell in love – not with the exams, but with the feeling that she was helping students put their feet on a firm path towards a big, bright future. (Ok, maybe she fell a little bit in love with the exams too. Her dad didn’t nickname her #2 Pencil Nerd for nothing.) After 7 years working as an in-home tutor with a large test prep firm and then in her own independent tutoring company, Lauren distilled her experiences into the personalized ACT prep courses that are now available through Higher Scores Test Prep. Lauren’s love of teaching and compassion for what students are facing in today’s complex, competitive college admissions landscape allows her to bring a little bit of calm to her corner of the college admissions process. Lauren is also the host of The College Checklist podcast. On the podcast, she interviews college counselors and other college admissions professionals, bringing timely, relevant information to today’s college bound families. You can subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts! Lauren lives in Carlsbad, CA with her husband Mike and their two energetic “babies” – Giada the Chihuahua and Captain Malcolm Reynolds their mischievous cat. When she’s not teaching, she can be found creating content for her fellow entrepreneurs, training for her next half marathon, or whipping up a new recipe in her teeny-tiny kitchen. Everything’s shiny on SERENITY (2005)! As part of my lead-up to Star Wars, I'm releasing film commentaries for my favorite space opera movies. My Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014) and Star Trek (2009) commentaries have been big hits, but I now bring you the best film of them all: SERENITY (2005) - Joss Whedon's magnum opus finale to the cult hit FIREFLY series and my favorite space "opera" (comedy) since the original Trilogy. With characters/actors who had a season of TV to develop all time great chemistry, SERENITY feels like coming home, a band of lovable pirates who form a very strong family while making you fall over laughing with classic Whedon-esque A+ humor. Nathan Fillion kills the comedy as Captain Malcolm Reynolds, but Summer Glau steals the movie as the psychic/assassin/adorable River Tam. And I can’t neglect Chiwitel Ejiofor as one of the greatest and most charismatic psychotic villains ever. Enjoy, humans. Serenity's crew reunites with Badger who now needs Captain Malcolm Reynolds and the respect he affords so that he can work a deal to move cattle off planet. Crossing paths at a fancy Southern inspired ball, Malcolm and Inara continue to battle, though in the end, they both come to the other's aid. And finally, we get to see the feminine side of Kaylee as she accompanies Mal to the ball, which, not surprisingly, produces a duel to the death involving the captain and Inara's client.
On the outer edges of the solar system, Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his crew straddle the line between law and order as they do whatever they can to survive. Serenity takes on its most enigmatic passenger to date, and the nine person crew establishes itself as they try to stay one step ahead of The Alliance.
Nathan Fillion, Captain Malcolm Reynolds himself, joins Stan and Jenna to talk about crazy fans, Castle, comic books, Comic-Con, and more!

Here' the deal, loyal listener. I have no idea what this cast is about, cause I wasn't a part of recording it. I'm sure there will be reprisals from bagging on Jim last week, so no matter what cock-and-bull story they come up with, know this: instead of casting, I was spending quality time with my progeny; introducing Star Wars to him for the first time. Try holding that one against me. Try it! You can't. You can feel your black shriveled heart swelling 3x too big just thinking about it. (Actually, I did that the night before, casting night I took him to his first Pacer's game. Decidedly less geeky, and less forgivable. But I can't lie to you guys. At least for more than one paragraph at a time.) Anyway… the other guys inform me that this week's cast contains Jim has a break through seeing colors from the Anime spectrum in Beebopian shades for the first time (don't get the reference? Check our Geek Colorblind cast, it's awesome…), discussion of my latest TV passion, “The Wire”, NBC's , “Community”, Captain Malcolm Reynolds latest vehicle, “Castle”, and Peter's take after 24 hours with the 3DS. Enjoy!
