In this special instant take, Will Ashton dives into Robert Eggers' latest film, Nosferatu, unpacking its deep ties to the 1922 horror classic and its fresh take on the Dracula mythos. He breaks down Eggers' distinct artistic style, highlights standout performances from Willem Dafoe and Bill Skarsgård, and praises the film's jaw-dropping production design and cinematography. Will also reflects on how Nosferatu fits into the modern horror landscape, sharing why it’s such an exciting year-end release that horror fans won’t want to miss. Nosferatu opened in theaters on December 25 through Focus Features and has a runtime of 132 minutes. The rest of the cast includes Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney. More about Nosferatu: Set in 19th-century Europe, Nosferatu follows Thomas Hutter, a real estate agent who heads to the eerie, isolated estate of Count Orlok to close a business deal. Sounds straightforward, right? Not quite. Things take a dark and sinister turn when Hutter realizes Orlok is no ordinary recluse: he’s a full-on vampire with a thirst for blood and an unsettling interest in Hutter’s wife, Ellen. As the danger escalates and Orlok’s shadow creeps closer to the village, the story unfolds into a chilling mix of gothic horror, psychological tension, and devastating stakes. Robert Eggers brings his trademark grit and authenticity to this retelling, delivering a film that feels both classic and refreshingly new. Director and actor Simon McBurney, one of the founders of the ground breaking theatre company Complicité, reveals his creative inspirations and influences. For over four decades McBurney has created innovative and experimental works, from immersive staging to the reinvention of classic texts. His works include A Disappearing Number, The Encounter and Mnemonic, a landmark production which has been recently revived at The National Theatre. Simon McBurney tells John Wilson about his childhood in Cambridge where his father, an archaeologist, helped foster an early fascination with time and memory. For This Cultural Life he chooses the 1969 Ken Loach film Kes as a formative influence, offering an insight to a childhood very different to his own middle class upbringing. He recalls seeing the band The Clash whilst at Cambridge University, an experience that had a profound impact on his own creativity and political engagement through the arts. He also chooses the writer and critic John Berger as an inspirational figure, and recalls collaborating with Berger on the immersive Artangel project The Vertical Line in 1999. Simon McBurney also describes how the experience of meeting indigenous Amazonian people inspired his 2016 Complicité show The Encounter. Carlo Rovelli is no ordinary scientist. With a genius for revealing the mysteries the universe to those of us without his gifts, he is the heir to Hawking, Sagan, and Feynman; and alone among the leaders of theoretical physics, he draws as much upon art, philosophy, and myth as equations and experiments to illuminate the splendour and strangeness of reality. Now he joins one of the UK's preeminent theatre practitioners, the wildly innovative actor, director, and founder of Complicite, Simon McBurney, to explore the most exhilarating questions in science and art. Welcome to BookShook! This episode is all about the second half of September's book, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin published in 2022 (from Chapter 5 'Pivots' on page 211 if you're reading alongside). The idea of the episode is that I take a book I've never read, split it in two and discuss each half in consecutive podcasts. I'll do a first impressions summary alongside my thoughts and reactions and then raise any interesting ideas so far in the novel (be aware - there may be spoilers.) Of course, you don't have to read the book, you can listen to it, or just follow along without doing either since I'll be summarising what happens (but be aware! - there will be spoilers). You can leave a comment or start a conversation at youtube.com/@BookShook or send an email to bookshook@yahoo.com. Going forward with the podcast, I'd like to read books that you suggest. So if you have one, let me know and I'll do a podcast on it. Send an email to bookshook@yahoo.com. So the next podcast will be about a book you suggest. Can't wait to hear your suggestions.Content Warning: There are adult themes throughout the first half: suicide, violence, sexism and misogyny. I don't use any foul language in this podcast. Welcome to BookShook! This episode is all about the first half of September's book, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin published in 2022 (up to Chapter 5 'Pivots' on page 211 if you're reading alongside). The idea is that I split a book into two equal halves — a book that I and perhaps you have never read. In the first episode, published on the second Friday of the month, we'll discuss the first half. And then in the second episode (published on the last Friday of the month - $Part2EpisodeDate$ September), we'll look at the second half of the book (in this case from Chapter 5 'Pivots' on page 211). We'll see together how the novel concludes and decide whether it's a book we'd recommend to a friend - or not. Of course, you don't have to read the book, you can listen to it, or just follow along without doing either since I'll be summarising what happens (but be aware! - there will be spoilers). You can leave a comment or start a conversation at youtube.com/@BookShook or send an email to bookshook@yahoo.com. The book we'll be reading for October is The Machine Stops by EM Forster (so get that ready if you're going to read alongside). Thanks for listening to BookShook! Kit and Steve's mission - if they choose to accept it - is to rate and review every single movie in the Mission: Impossible franchise on Mission: Impossible: Mondays! This week they review Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. It seems Tom Cruise has finally found his soul mate in director Christopher McQuarrie. The connection between music and human beings runs deeper than you might think. Humans are innately musical beings - and our relationship with music has been deeply intertwined since the homo sapiens first emerged. Our guest today is Michael Spitzer, who boldly makes the case that music is the most important thing we ever did; and is in fact a fundamental part of what makes us human. Michael is a British musicologist and professor of Music at the University of Liverpool. He is the author of four books including his most recent, The Musical Human: A History of Life on Earth. The book is the first 'Big History' of music, a colossal history spanning cultures, time, and space to explore the vibrant relationship between music and the human species. He joins us from Liverpool, England. Learn more about Michael at https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/music/staff/michael-spitzer/ where you'll find links to his research and publications. Look for his book The Musical Human: A History of Life on Earth from Bloomsbury wherever you buy your books, and listen to the serialised version on BBC Radio 4's Book of the Week, read by Simon McBurney. ... Johan Eklöf is a Swedish bat scientist on a mission. In The Darkness Manifesto (translated by Elizabeth DeNoma) he warns how light pollution is threatening the ancient rhythms of life. Many creatures across the world come to life at night – with bats specially adapted to fly using echolocation. By keeping the lights on we are disrupting entire ecosystems. But darkness can appear alien and frightening. The writer Kate Summerscale explores the phobias that haunt the imagination as the lights go off: nyctophobia, xylophobia and hypnophobia – intense and morbid fears of the dark, of forests and of falling asleep. But why do bumps in the night sound so much more unnerving than during the day? The neuroscientist Professor Geraint Rees focuses his research on seeking to understand the neural basis of consciousness and he explores how our different senses are integral to the way we perceive and experience the world around us. The forces of light and darkness are pitted against each other in the classic children's story The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper, now adapted for BBC World Service radio, starting on Tuesday 20th December. Producer and co-adapter Simon McBurney creates a spine-tingling winter soundscape with the use of binaural sound, giving listeners using headphones a unique immersive experience. Producer: Katy Hickman
Peter Brook and Richard Wolinsky. Peter Brook (1925-2022), visionary director, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky. Peter Brook was one of the greatest theatrical directors of the twentieth century. Artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company for twenty years from 1962-1982, he transformed how the English speaking world looked at the plays of William Shakespeare. He is perhaps best known, during those years, for his production of “The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade,” also known as “Marat/Sade,” which later became a film and turned Glenda Jackson into an international star. His other films include “Lord of the Flies,” “Meetings with Remarkable Men” and a version of “King Lear” starring Paul Scofield. His 1985 nine-hour adaptation of the Indian epic Mahabharata is probably his masterpiece. At the age of 92, he and his collaborator Marie Helene Estienne went back to the Mahabharata with a short theatrical piece, “Battlefield,” which played at ACT's Geary Theater in May, 2017. This interview was recorded on April 24, 2017 in a rehearsal studio in the ACT offices in San Francisco. Included in the podcast is a brief commentary on Peter Brook by actor and director Simon McBurney.
