Miles Van Der Molen, CEO of CemAir, discusses the controversy surrounding FlySafair's admission of overbooking flights in South Africa, which he claims violates local laws. He explains that overbooking is a common international practice but illegal here due to consumer protection regulations. The issue raises questions about industry ethics and enforcement. Van Der Molen spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg.

Irish-owned Safair, which dominates South Africa's domestic airline sector with a 60% market share, is facing a life-threatening challenge. Cemair founder and CEO Miles vd Molen explains in this interview that after being found guilty on the same charge a decade ago, Safair is once again accused of breaking SA's local ownership rules. International regulators, which recently found Safair guilty, will deliver a sanction before the end of next week, opening the way for the local authorities to follow suit. Van der Molen spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg.
Accounts publicly available in in Ireland's Companies Office show that since 2019, SA's dominant domestic airline, Safair, has been 75% owned by European operator ASL Holdings - contravening South African regulations stipulating a 25% foreign limit. Cemair founder and CEO Miles van der Molen believes sine May last year its Irish parent has been subsidising Safair by some R100m a month. In this hard-hitting interview, Van der Molen says it's no innocent oversight by Safair, which was taken to task on the same issue in 2014. After initially complying, records show the airline quietly injected the shares into an SA shell company owned by its Irish parent. He spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg. Catch up with the latest news and insights from the aviation sector, plenty of bro science, hearty motivation and some horrendous financial advice. Quite possibly a waste of your valuable time. Listen at your own peril.
Airline entrepreneur Miles van der Molen shares an insider's perspective of the local aviation sector where SAA continues to fly despite losing a bundle (so who's funding it?) and how, despite having less than 10 aircraft, the State-owned airline wants to open a route to Brazil. Cemair's founder and CEO explains the implications of a growing shortage of skills locally after SA pilots and engineers are being sucked into a global industry desperate for staff as volumes return to pre-Covid pandemic levels. He spoke to Alec Hogg of BizNews.
In the past four years, 21-year-old independent airline Cemair has trebled in size to now sit snugly in SA's number three spot behind Safair and Airlink - a position that is comfortable for founder and CEO Miles vd Molen. In this update on the SA aviation sector, vd Molen shares his insights into the best (and worst) days for price-conscious flyers; retaining the culture in a fast-growing business; and how Cemair is coping in SA's turbulent sector where global players Swissport and Air BP are in the process of divesting. ✈️Cemair adds to their already impressive route network, SARS implement a new travel pass system
During the worst of the insanity in SA's airline sector, Miles vd Molen's Cemair stopped servicing the industry's Joburg/CT/Durban 'golden triangle' as it realised how first taxpayer (SAA) and then creditor's capital (Comair) was used to subsidise travellers in an attempt to bludgeon competitors into bankruptcy. Now that those market's distortions are over, Cemair has invested heavily and with a significantly increased fleer recently returned to servicing SA's three biggest airports. Its capacity has risen four-fold (1m passengers annually) from the pre-Covid number of 250 000. And there is lots more growth to come, not just in SA, but also in neighbouring countries as it secures licences to expand flights into neighbouring countries. Entrepreneur Van der Molen, a pilot himself, explains how Cemair waited seven years for the market to normalise and is now expanding aggressively (but he says sustainably) into the vacuum left by the demise of Comair and dramatic down-sizing of SAA. For Cemair founder Miles van der Molen, today's reality was unthinkable when the independent airline launched 15 years ago. In addition to numerous other routes, the company now has five flights daily from Johannesburg to Cape Town - and is the country's third largest airline, moving more passengers than (slimmed down) SAA. With the ending of subsidies that benefitted subsidies the SA aviation market's two biggest players, van der Molen's entrepreneurial approach positions his airline for strong growth. He explains why in this interview with Alec Hogg of BizNews.com.

Yesterday, the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) suspended the operation of Cemair. The Civil Aviation Authority says the suspension was necessitated by concerns over the systemic failure of the airline's maintenance controls. Elvis Presslin spoke to South African Civil Aviation Authority, Phindi Gwebu...
Airline CemAir insists that it did comply with the regulations of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SAACA) but claims that the organisation did not cooperate when it had questions around its reasons for grounding the airline. CemAir has been given until airline CemAir until 5pm today to give information regarding its safety measures regarding the weight of the plane and how it is calculated. This comes after a court order which lifted a temporary suspension by CAA which also stated that the parties must find a solution themselves after the company's planes were grounded for failure to comply. The Aviation Authority discovered this when it conducted an audit of the company's planes last week. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SA Civil Aviation Authority' s Executive: Corporate Services Phindiwe Gwebu.
