Interesting one today, with the only real through line being public golf. Cabot Karoo is a high dollar project in South Florida whereas Champion Hill is a mom and pop sort of golf course outside of Traverse City, Michigan. While these 2 courses don't really have a ton in common, that in essence is what house theory is all about. We can evaluate golf holes essentially against themselves and decide which one is the best version of itself vs comparing one hole to another. Hope you all enjoy this conversation. fWotD Episode 2551: Battle of Grand Gulf Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Monday, 29 April 2024 is Battle of Grand Gulf. The Battle of Grand Gulf was fought on April 29, 1863, during the American Civil War. Union Army forces commanded by Major General Ulysses S. Grant had failed several times to bypass or capture the Confederate-held city of Vicksburg, Mississippi, during the Vicksburg campaign. Grant decided to move his army south of Vicksburg, cross the Mississippi River, and then advance on the city. A Confederate division under Brigadier General John S. Bowen prepared defenses—Forts Wade and Cobun—at Grand Gulf, Mississippi, south of Vicksburg. To clear the way for a Union crossing, seven Union Navy ironclad warships from the Mississippi Squadron commanded by Admiral David Dixon Porter bombarded the Confederate defenses at Grand Gulf on April 29. Union fire silenced Fort Wade and killed its commander, but the overall Confederate position held. Grant decided to cross the river elsewhere. The next day, Union forces crossed the river at Bruinsburg, Mississippi. A Union victory in the Battle of Port Gibson on May 1 secured the beachhead and forced the abandonment of the position at Grand Gulf, which became a Union supply point. Grant's command moved inland, and after defeating Confederate forces in the Battle of Champion Hill on May 16, began the Siege of Vicksburg two days later. Vicksburg surrendered on July 4, marking a major Confederate defeat and a turning point in the war. The Grand Gulf battlefield is preserved in Grand Gulf Military State Park, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Monday, 29 April 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Battle of Grand Gulf on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Nicole Standard.

This week we have 3 more battles until the official start of the Siege Of Vicksburg. Up first, on May 14th, Grant decides to take the strategic town of Jackson Mississippi. After Jackson is occupied, Grant sets his sites on Champion Hill on May 16th where Confederate General Johnston retreated. William Aspinwal was many things. A child soldier. A ladies' man. A mechanic. A tramp. A drunkard. A husband married five times. Each of these descriptions capture an aspect of his life, yet none do him justice. And they don't explain how he became one of the most unlikely folk heroes of pre-World War One America.Known later as “Roving Bill,” Aspinwal's story begins when he was severely wounded and left for dead while fighting for the Union in the Battle of Champion Hill, one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War. He recovered from his wounds but lived the next 60 years with shrapnel embedded in his brain and right arm. After the war, due to what we recognize now as PTSD, he wandered throughout the United States for the rest of his days, amiably making friends, working hard, and then pulling up stakes when it all became too comfortable. To discuss his story, one that is left out of Reconstruction narratives, is today's guest, Owen Clayton, author of Roving Bill Aspinwall: Dispatches from a Hobo in Post-Civil War America. Beyond travelling the states, Aspinwal spent 24 years writing letters to temperance advocate and professor, John McCook. His letters give a lucid account of the realities of living on the road as well as the challenges Bill faced dealing with his lingering war injuries both mental and physical.

We are continuing our narrative on the siege of Vicksburg. In this episode we concentrate on the key moment in this campaign - Grant crossing the Mississippi River and capturing the capital of Mississippi, Jackson. In three weeks, Grant's army was able to cut off the primary supply line and communication corridor from Vicksburg to the rest of the Confederacy. In addition, Grant beat back General Pemberton's only attempt to meet Grant outside of the city, the battle of Champion Hill. This was one of Grant's stellar campaigns and would set up the siege of Vicksburg. Have a question, comment, or compliment? Contact us at americawarpodcast@gmail.com. Located in Northern Lower Michigan, Champion Hill Golf Course and Pinecroft Golf Course are both within a 30-minute drive of the world-famous Arcadia Bluffs and Crystal Downs. Champion Hill and Pinecroft are public, affordable, well-designed, and—here's the key—owned and operated by one family. Is this the ideal business model for affordable golf? Andy Johnson and Garrett Morrison address that question in this episode, but first they spend some time chatting about the Solheim Cup, which took place at Inverness Club this past weekend. After Andy and Garrett finish up, they throw it to a conversation Andy recently had with Lee Stone, the owner of Champion Hill and Pinecroft, and Jim Cole, the longtime superintendent of both courses.

With that comes the return of Dolph Lundgren, hence why the former playboy has decided to suit up here. This isn't the first time we've seen "The Hood" in flashbacks, but it is the closest Oliver has come to being the Green Arrow in the show's flashbacks. From here, it seems as if we should now expect to see his journey back to Star City begin as it looks like the vigilante is going to take the gangster down. Join us for a Dulwich Hamlet home game as we give you an insight into a Saturday spent at Champion Hill. Enjoy pre-match build up, clips from the match itself, and post-match festivities.
This week's show features interviews with striker Harry Ottaway and manager Gavin Rose. We look back at Dulwich Hamlet's games against East Thurrock, Harrow Borough and Kingstonian, with match reports from Darren McCreery and Michael Bessel, and there's update from the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters Trust on the future of Champion Hill. Produced and presented by Jack McInroy II.
At the turn of the century there was a Gaumont Film Company studio on Champion Hill in Camberwell. There's nothing left of it now, but the Friends of Dog Kennel Hill Wood hosted a screening of films produced by the studio on the spot the sound stage was located this past Saturday night. We talked to the organisers about putting this extravaganza of Edwardian cinema together and have a chat about the films themselves as well as the innovation and creativity that still shine through.
In this episode we are joined by Mark Panton, who is researching the relationship between big football club's stadium redevelopments and the local communities affected by them. We discuss Tottenham Hotspur's ongoing attempts to build a bigger stadium amidst local protests about housing and facilities, how their plans contrast with Arsenal's earlier development (itself controversial), Liverpool's 'tinning up' of local homes & the issue of 'state aid' in East Manchester and beyond. More deeply, we consider how positive community relations can be a source of pride for a football club beyond the myopic obsession with success on the pitch. Finally, we turn to the flipside of stadia redevelopment - where smaller clubs' grounds are at risk from developers, looking at the example of Dulwich Hamlet's Champion Hill and a supporters' attempt to have it listed as an Asset of Community Value.
We visited Champion Hill to find out what makes Dulwich Hamlet Football Club so special.
