Mike Benz, executive director of the Foundation for Freedom Online, joins James Poulos to discuss protecting digital liberties and the growing government control over censorship and access to information. As conflicts like Russia and Ukraine unfold, censorship on social media platforms further complicates the discourse, hindering efforts toward constructive dialogue and peace. While the U.S. government limits online free speech domestically, it continues to hold a weakened global position compared to China (Huawei) and Taiwan (chip manufacturing), both of which have technological superiority.   Sponsors: Join the New Founding Talent Network. Qualcomm Update: Did China & Huawei Just Force Qualcomm (QCOM) and Apple (AAPL) Into A Chip Deal? 5G Stock Analysis

Qualcomm and Apple just announced that they have extended their multi-year agreement for Qualcomm to supply 5G modem-RF systems to Apple for future iPhones. The new agreement covers the supply of Snapdragon 5G modem-RF systems for products that will be released in 2024, 2025, and 2026. This agreement is a significant development for both companies. For Qualcomm, it means that it will continue to be a supplier of 5G modems for Apple's most popular product. This is a major win for Qualcomm, as it validates its technology in the 5G market. For Apple, this agreement means that it will continue to have access to Qualcomm's leading 5G modem technology. This will help Apple products offer the best possible 5G performance and experience for its customers, even as it reportedly continues working on its own 5G modem chipsets. The two companies have had a long and contentious history, but perhaps they're working to mend fences. It's undoubtedly no coincidence that this deal was inked right after the recent pressure placed on the companies from Huawei, with its release of the Mate 60 Pro, and China's new restriction on government employees' use of the iPhone. "You're right. Now the US is trying very hard to get TSMC to move to the US and they're throwing money out - TSMC is going to Arizona. The CHIPS Act has been passed. That'll throw a lot of money around, but that won't be enough. In the currently announced plans - just purely what's been announced so far - I ran the numbers and estimated that TSMC's global capacity, only less than 5% would be in the US based on the currently announced plans. Now, I expect those plans to expand and broaden. They seem to have enough land and the possibility of up to four factories instead of two. They could even go to six, who knows? But even if they were to expand to the maximum of what might be possible in Arizona, I think still we'd get maybe 7% of global capacity in the US may be up to 10%. And it won't be the leading edge. The leading edge will still be in Taiwan. And that's not just for protection reasons. I think a lot of people think that all the Taiwanese don't wanna have the best in America because they're trying to hold onto it for themselves - which is true - but it's also an issue of practicality." - Tim Culpan   Fresh out of the studio, Tim Culpan, the Bloomberg columnist, joined us to discuss how the tech giants from China (Huawei, YMTC) and Taiwan (Foxconn, TSMC) are navigating a fragile global supply chain. Starting our conversation, Tim examined how Foxconn and TSMC are making key moves to ensure the resiliency of the global supply chain from contract manufacturing to semiconductors. As we moved on, Tim provided a glimpse into how the Chinese tech giants, Huawei and SMIC are addressing the same challenges and examined the key strategy for China to develop its own semiconductors. Last but not least, Tim broke down the amount of money that Warren Buffett from Berkshire Hathaway had left on the table after retreating from his recent position in TSMC. Welcome to episode 179 ("Harbinger of the Tech Correction") of the EdTech Situation Room from May 27, 2020, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) discussed the intersection of safety, security, medical needs and privacy when it comes to COVID-19 contact tracing. Developments around Twitter's attempts to counter U.S. Presidential misinformation, "the human cost of misinformation" in the age of neo-coronavirus, and the challenge to mainstream media credibility posed by news outlets republishing Amazon press releases repackaged as "news" were also highlighted. A recent Forbes article on Chrome browser security was also discussed, along with the opportunity articles like this provide to practice web literacy / media literacy strategies like SIFT. (s/o @holden) The escalating battle over 5G infrastructure between China / Huawei and the United States was also discussed, along with reported issues relating to Apple iOS software updates as well as Microsoft Windows10 updates. A recent report by the U.S. Copyright office encouraging Congress to revisit "safe harbor" provisions of the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) in favor of rights holders was explored. The digital future will be shaped by the next, fifth generation of wireless technology, commonly known as a “5G.” With key aspects of this new digital infrastructure already rolling out, Huawei, a controversial government-connected Chinese firm has taken the global lead in critical areas of 5G technology. This has sparked an intense debate among members of the Five Eyes intelligence sharing alliance (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the U.S.) and beyond about the national security implications of future digital technology infrastructure and the need to develop new tools and authorities to defend against new national security threats in a rapidly-evolving environment. This debate has already produced new investment screening mechanisms in several Western capitals and new efforts to reject or better scrutinize proposed Chinese investments. Where do we go from here? Will all members of the Five Eyes ban Huawei equipment? If one member does allow Huawei to develop their 5G infrastructure, how will that affect intelligence sharing? Will the Five Eyes seek to develop alternatives, including promoting Huawei’s competitors, and how will that affect the market? What further steps must the democracies take in order to secure their digital futures? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
