We realize that not every child is going to grow up to be a world class musician or standout singer. Or even be inclined to join their church's choir and go to the symphony every weekend. However, we wholeheartedly believe in music's important place in a child's education - both learning to make good music and learning to appreciate good music. Throughout history, the free societies of the world have valued music education, and for good reason. As we approach our anticipated Christmas Concerts (and Christmas caroling season, of course) this is an excellent time to listen to a conversation with our three music teachers - Sarah Smith (K-2nd grade music), Lindsey Stauffer (upper grammar and secondary music and choir director) and Jennifer Petry (orchestra director) - about why music education enriches a student for life in their future families, churches, and communities at large. Links for Further Listening Here are links to some of the music pieces mentioned in this episode, for your family's further listening enjoyment: Vivaldi Four Seasons Haydn Surprise Symphony Bach Toccata and Fugue in d minor Berlioz Symphony Fantastique 5th movement

This week's podcast is a throwback to last year but just as important! During these crazy times we know only one for sure about Advent this year: it will be different. Without the things we are used to, like Christmas Concerts and large family gathers, it might be tempting to just let the season pass us by, but I'm here to challenge you to make this Advent something very special for your family. As a mother of 5, I know how hard it can be to do something that will engage the hearts of every family member, but I have some fun ideas to share with you so that you family can really get Advent right this year. Nancy Bandzuch started Catholic Sprouts two years ago out of a desire to help her own family! She was struggling to find a way to teach her kids the faith every day in spite of busy schedules, distraction and the craziness of life. She was looking for something audio-based because her kids really responded to that, but there was nothing out there that was short, simple, and super easy to use; so she decided to make it herself! And the podcast was born! The response was immediate and overwhelming and sparked ideas for other products to help families teach the faith in a way that is easy, practical and beautiful. They discovered their passion for helping parents evangelize their children. This is a replay of an episode I recorded in 2012. Excuse the sound quality. Many of you may not even be doing ANY concerts this year, much less a Christmas concert. In this very short episode, I just wanted to share some of my thoughts on why I chose many years ago to not have Christmas concerts. Maybe this will give you an idea for the future, when concerts return and the pandemic is a thing of the past. Disclaimer - I do set students up in caroling groups and we go around the school, often with the choir. Easy - fun - very well received! This is the last episode of 2020. I look forward to bringing you more content next year. I'd love to hear from you! Send me a question or comment at jamesthedivine@gmail.com. www.jamesdivine.net

As schools start their annual winding down for the year, these last few weeks of term can be very stressful, due to end of year events, Christmas Concerts and added pressure on teacher who are often in the report writing stage. This is mean that not only are kids, parents and teachers tired, but for some children who are living with autism in particular, this time of year can feel so overwhelming. As the Mum of a, now young man, living with Autism, this was always the time of year when things could get very overwhelming.
