Al Porter - "I've the whole rest of my life to live as a good person"

Al Porter was everywhere......TV, Radio, Newspapers, Pantos and filling theaters all over Ireland until one day when it all came to a grinding halt. In a very honest and open conversation, Al has said alcohol played a large role in his behavior in 2017 when he was accused of inappropriately touching men, leading to a complete end to his career overnight. The comedian, who is now sober for over three years, said he had a sense that the wheels were coming off and that he was far too immature for the speed of his rise to fame. After some very dark days, feeling suicidal and spending time in hospital, he accepts that people had every right to call him out. Whilst he didn't think he was being a bad person at the time, Al has since learned that his actions were inappropriate. After working on himself for 6 years, Al never wants to repeat the past and as he says himself, he has the rest of his life to live as a good person. Al admitted that he is trying to make amends with people over time, and has written letters to some, but some people didn't want them. This is a very raw and difficult conversation. Al tells us in great detail every thought and emotion he was feeling at the time and also explains all the work he has done over the last 6 years to become a better person. Al says "no matter how bad things are in your life, it's never too late to turn things around and it's never too late to reach out for help" Hosted on Acast. Meet Dave Pantos As an attorney who has worked tirelessly for a fair and equitable justice system, I have a passion for service and good government. I have had the honor to serve the Omaha community in many ways over the last two decades. Now, I want to build on the progress that so many others have made in this city and county and bring meaningful change to our system. This mission has been at the core of my career as an attorney, nonprofit leader, and advocate for people who haven't gotten a fair shake. And it is why I am running for County Attorney in Douglas County. As almost everyone would agree, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” But Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous words resonate so loudly today because we still have so much work to do. As County Attorney, I will draw on the wide range of experiences that I have in both judicial and administrative courtrooms. For example, as a Legal Aid attorney, I secured key victories on behalf of people with disabilities in federal court. I later served as Executive Director of the Legal Aid program in Nebraska, and I currently teach law and policy at the University of Nebraska at Omaha to the next generation of environmental science professionals. I am in court downtown every week representing tenants facing homelessness in eviction court. Every case I can get dismissed is a victory for a family that won't end up on the streets. During my tenure as Legal Aid's Executive Director, I helped to initiate the statewide health law project, the Access to Justice Centers in Omaha and Lincoln, and, in partnership with other local organizations, the Nebraska Immigration Legal Assistance Hotline. My nonprofit service also included a term as Executive Director of Autism Action Partnership. Under my leadership, we debuted the Partnership for Autism Career Employment. As a nonprofit leader, I was Board Chairperson of both the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands and the Domestic Violence Council. Recently, I served a term as one of the two District 3 Board Members on the Metropolitan Community College Board of Governors. Currently, I serve on the Board of Omaha Permaculture and the Nebraska Lawyers Trust Account Foundation and also serve on the Event Committee of Kids Can Community Center. Of course, family is the center of my life in Omaha. I am married to the incredible Jill Pantos, who has served our country through her work in the Navy--including several years overseas--and is now a nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Omaha. My twin sons Miles and Lyndon are first-year students at Millard North High School. We have a blended family which also includes my step-daughter Rowan and step-son Cooper. As County Attorney, I will focus on crime reduction strategies through three principles: justice, fairness, and transparency. It's time for criminal justice reform in Nebraska, and it's an outside, independent voice who can make that happen. Please vote Pantos for County Attorney in 2022! Justice for James Scurlock. https://saytheirnamesmemorials.com/james-scurlock --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/midwest-misfits/support

Simply put, the answer is yes. You should definitely go to a pantomime! Commonly known as “panto,” pantomime is a kind of comedy show that is a crucial part of British Christmas tradition. Pantos are intentionally silly and over-the-top. All the characters wear outrageous costumes and the actors typically dress in “drag,” meaning that the men dress as women and the women dress as men. No matter what the story is, there is always a bumbling hero, a clumsy villain, and the promise that the hero will fall in love. Audience participation is vital. The most famous line in all pantos is, “He's behind you!” The audience yells this at the hero, trying to warn him that the villain is about to pounce on him. The hero always replies, “No he isn't!” The tradition of comedy theatre at this time of year goes back to the Victorian times. It was similar to modern day pantomime with an emphasis on comedy of the ‘slap-stick' kind. But its origins were in political satire that poked fun at the establishment, often using characters that had many similarities with well-known and disliked nobles, or even the monarchy. This is less the case now with pantomime taking modern stories and well-known tales and putting a humorous spin on them. We need such escapist nonosesen more than ever.

Pantos are at risk this year (oh yes they are!). Which is your favourite? And in a bid to move out of our comfort zone we have decided to jump out of a plane for charity! Sometimes we experience anxiety or trepidation when taking our first steps in counselling, so we have decided to reconnect with that feeling on a grand scale! Ross lives out on a farm so the time spent stuck at home hasn't been cramped. For someone who's all about live gigs, that's been missing of late. Probably the longest Debrief episode ever and there were very short odds it would've been with Ross Noble.   Ross Noble podcast here! It's a special day in studio at West of Broadway! We are joined by the amazing Becky Lythgoe to discuss the 10th anniversary of Lythgoe Family Panto! Listen in as we discuss the upcoming presentation of A Snow White Christmas. In England, the holidays just aren’t the holidays without a trip to a classic Panto. Lythgoe Family Panto’s fun spin on Snow White brings all the slapstick fun and audience participation that Pantos are known for — and even features a pre-recorded video illusion of the Magic Mirror played by (how’s this for perfect casting?) actor-magician Neil Patrick Harris. Additional cast members include Garrett Clayton as The Huntsman, Disney’s Olivia Sanabia as Snow White and Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams as The Queen. Lythgoe Family Panto returns to the historic Pasadena Civic Auditorium with their 10-year anniversary production of A Snow White Christmas, December 13-22, 2019. In 2016, Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield produced its first ever professional pantomime, Cinderella, written by one of the UK’s leading pantomime writers, Andrew Pollard, who has been brought back to write this year’s Jack and the Beanstalk. Andrew is taking a year off from playing Dame at Greenwich Theatre to tour in Around the World in 80 Days as Phileas Fogg. However there are still 6 of his panto scripts in production this Christmas around the UK. In this episode, Andrew speaks extensively about his views on what pantos should contain, the qualities required for good panto performers and how to deal with changing requirements, demands and attitudes to keep panto fresh and entertaining for new audiences. Jack and the Beanstalk by Andrew Pollard will run at Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield from 8 December 2017 to 6 January 2018. Andrew’s other pantos this year include Cinderella at Greenwich Theatre from 17 November 2017, another Jack and the Beanstalk at Salisbury Playhouse from 2 December 2017 and Beauty and the Beast at Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch from 30 November 2017, all finishing on 7 January 2018. Andrew can be seen on tour in Around the World in 80 Days until January. (Photo of Andrew Pollard as Long Joan Silver in Peter Pan at Greenwich Theatre credit Robert Day)
