The holiday season is upon us, and everyone's misbehaving! This week, Trevin kicks things off with a festive TV show recommendation perfect for any Christmas binge, while Amanda shares her struggle after buying an Elf on the Shelf so small it could hide in a snowflake—meet Frost Pips! Before diving into the chaos, the crew exchanges Christmas presents, where Amanda receives a fun surprise, and Trevin delivers a gift so huge it might just steal the show.Next, the crew unwraps a Top 5 Holiday Edition filled with bizarre and petty Christmas facts. Was there a prequel to The Grinch Who Stole Christmas? What's the surprisingly petty history behind Christmas caroling? And did someone really write a Christmas song about... pooping presents?Story Time delivers two shockingly selfish holiday crimes. Amanda tells the tale of Shaina Hudson, a mother of five who woke up to a Grinch-like thief stealing her family's Christmas gifts. Trevin follows up with the story of a mischievous South Carolina kid whose quest for a GameBoy Advance SP takes a hilariously selfish turn. Both stories reveal just how far people will go to steal—from themselves—during the holidays.Don't be a ho ho ho this season! Were you aware that the Nutcracker Ballet was not much of a hit when first performed in 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia?  While the music was well received, the ballet itself was not an instant fan favorite.  It didn't grow to high popularity until the 1940s when it began to take off in the United States.  Over the years it has become a quintessential part of the Christmas season in America.  Come take a listen and see how and why it took off.

Synopsis It's strange to read the doubts Tchaikovsky expressed in letters about many of his greatest musical works, which he first would dismiss as failures, only to change his mind completely a few weeks later. Take, for example, his ballet The Nutcracker, which had its premiere performance on this day in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. Tchaikovsky described working on the ballet as a "dread-inspiring, feverish nightmare, so abominable that I don't think I have the strength to put it into words." At the time, Tchaikovsky was MUCH more optimistic about an opera he was writing titled Yolanta—only to abruptly changed his mind, writing "Now I think that the ballet is good and the opera nothing special." This time, Tchaikovsky got it right—although initially the opera DID prove more popular than the ballet. Another—and deliberately nightmarish—Russian composition had its first performance on this same day 70 years later. This was the Symphony No. 13 by Dmitri Shostakovich, subtitled Babi Yar, based on poems of Yevgeny Yevtushenko. This choral symphony was first heard on today's date in 1962 at the Moscow Conservatory, but was quickly banned by the Soviet authorities. Its title poem, Babi Yar, called attention to Soviet indifference to the Holocaust and persistent anti-Semitism in Soviet society. Yevtushenko later softened these lines so the symphony could be performed in the U.S.S.R. How much time do you have to learn a new song? Two weeks or months? Two years? If you are a beginner and want to reduce learning time consider E-Z Play Today published by Hal Leonard. If you recognize this composition by Peter Tchaikovsky, you're way ahead of the game already. E-Z Play Today sheet music contains easy arrangements for melodies on the right hand and chords for the left hand. Written in C major, you'll be given a sightreading workout for Dance of the Reed-Flutes. Performed by orchestras all over the world this music is now at your fingertips and accessible for music students who want to play it. Within a day or one week, you'll amaze yourself with a little practice and anyone who hears you anywhere including your backyard. The neighbors are listening, trust me. The ballet debuted in 1892 in St. Petersburg, and Tchaikovsky's Suite of the eight most popular songs (like the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and the “Russian Dance”) quickly became a hit internationally. Hoffmann fantasy story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, about a girl who befriends a nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve and wages a battle against the evil Mouse King.

In this episode with Bunny Holmes, discover an inside look at the workings of a family-style circus troupe, The Vespertine Circus, and their latest production - The Rocky Horror Circus Show! Bunny Holmes has been casting and putting on shows since preschool – first plays for the neighbors, then DIY dance recitals for friends from school, and by fourth grade, she was enrolled in before-school choir, after-school drama classes, and briefly missed school outright because she was touring as a toy-soldier in a youth ensemble Nutcracker Ballet. In high school, she started street performing around tourist attractions in San Francisco as a living statue. Alongside circus & performing arts, Bunny studied music history, humanistic psychology, and religious studies at UCSC. There she gained a reputation for coordinating large all-ages events both on and off-campus – often designed with an absurd, whimsical or humorous concept. Needless to say, her love of the stage has never diminished and when she told her friends she was going to start a circus, they believed her and some joined the cause. “The more we are proud that the Bethlehem story is plain enough to be understood by the shepherds, and almost by the sheep, the more do we let ourselves go, in dark and gorgeous imaginative frescoes or pageants about the mystery and majesty of the Three Magian Kings.” - G.K. Chesterton   For our last episode of 2021, Phoebe is back again to discuss the wonderful paradox in celebrating Christmas that calls for both humility and extravagance. We discuss the mystery of the Christmas story, and the deep humility that Christ demonstrates to us in coming as a child in a manager, as well as our responding call to humility and generosity. We also discuss our need for splendour in our liturgies but also in our culture and our surroundings. We delve into the magic of The Nutcracker Ballet and the splendour to be found in our own Christmas decorations.   We hope you enjoy the episode and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and blessings for the new year ahead.   Music: Ashton Manor by Kevin MacLeod Hosts: Rachel Sherlock, Phoebe Watson Follow me on social media: @seekingwatson Follow the podcast on Instagram: @riskingenchantmentpodcast Find out more at www.rachelsherlock.com Sign up for our email list at www.rachelsherlock.com/podcast   The Nutcracker - Royal Opera House “The House of Christmas” by G.K. “Every holiday season, throughout the land, Mirlitons, Candy Canes, and other treats bounce briskly through The Nutcracker's Kingdom of the Sweets.” (_The Ballet Companion_ p.158) “The Nutcracker” ballet is such an epic part of Christmastime, and though I can't possibly provide an exhaustive account of such a dancing phenomenon, I'd like to share some of the history and my own fascination with the music, dancing, costumes, and magical story. Hopefully it sparks a bit of your own childlike wonder, dreams, and fantasies as well as your grown-up appreciation of music, storytelling, and the art of dance. “The Nutcracker is a Christmas holiday favorite and the most popular ballet in America. There are more than 2,000 performances of it every year around the country. You will probably have a chance to see it someday–and maybe even dance in it yourself, since it has a lot of roles for young dancers.” (_A Child's Introduction to Ballet_ p.47) I share insights from George Balanchine on "The Nutcracker," the literature origins of the story, authors ETA Hoffmann and Alexandre Dumas, The Dance Channel's "History of the Nutcracker Ballet" video on YouTube, psychological elements in Barishnikov's "Nutcracker," themes of vengeance, Matthew Donnell's _The Boy with the Patch_ children's book about Drosselmeier's story, the ballet's debut in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre, Petipa and Ivanov, Tchaikovsky, Sadler's Wells, Ballet Russe, San Francisco Ballet, NYCB... Here are some music favorites, and those I use in creative dance interpretations of the story are included in the'Nutcracker' Story for Creative Dance playlist on Spotify: Scene 1: Overture, Party Scene, Children's Dance Scene 2: Godfather Drosselmeier's arrival, Dolls dance Scene 3: All go to bed, Battle Scene, Marie/Clara's role in winning Scene 4: Snowy Forest, Waltz of the Snowflakes Scene 5: Kingdom of the Sweets, Sugarplum Fairy/Pas de Deux, Waltz of the Flowers, Arabian, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Mirlitons/Marzipan, Mother Ginger/Polichinelles/Candy Canes divertissements. Scene 6: Marie's return home, Finale For a full ballet or dance class, I have arranged tracks from the ballet in my “Nutcracker” Ballet Class playlist Questions for reflection: What versions of “The Nutcracker” have you seen? Which is your favorite? Have you performed in “The Nutcracker” ballet or other wintertime productions? What holiday traditions will you enjoy this year? What music fills you with the spirit of the season? More resources will linked in the blog :) Thanks for listening and happy holidays! Most Americans know Tchaikovsky as the composer of the delightful dances contained within the Nutcracker Ballet. As Fr. John Strickland shows, however, there is much more to be heard in their melodies, and little that was delightful about the emotionally agonized life behind them. Using selections from a variety of works, he explores how the romantic agony came for Tchaikovsky in his boyhood and thereafter never departed. Special attention is given to an analysis of the famous Sixth Symphony, nicknamed Pathetique. First performed just days before the composer's abrupt death, the work brings the generation of the romantics to a heart-rending and emblematic conclusion.

Summary:In today's episodes of The Tragedy Academy, Jay is joined by Brazilian actor and dancer Glauco Araujo. Glauco walks us through his life growing up in remote farmland in Brazil and how he turned his internal struggles into beautiful art for all to consume.Key Points: Glauco tells his backstory growing up in a remote farm area in BrazilTransitioning from a field outside of Rio to an accomplished dancer and actorGlauco's first contact with balletFavorite ballet dancer Rudolph Nureyev and relating to his struggleMoving to New York wanting to something moreSeeking therapyCharity: Disciple Actors GuildEpisode Highlights:[02:23] Glauco tells us his experience growing up on a farm outside of Rio De Janeiro and his aspirations of wanting something more [05:05] Glauco shares where his passion for dance was born. Starting with performing at Carnival, to working in the Paralympics, and also working for Modern Dance in Chicago.[07:20] Glauco expresses his awe every time he visited Rio as a kid, comparing it to being in Times Square for the first time. [09:47] Glauco gives us a rundown of his initial contact with a ballet which was getting his first job in a dance company in Rio where he was lucky enough to have a director who believed in him. Although he does admit that he hated ballet at first.[12:49] Glauco begins to immerse himself into the ballet by studying its history which is where he discovered his favorite dancer, Rudolf Nureyev.[17:37] Glauco reveals how he relates to Rudolph's struggle; the diversity he had to overcome by being gay, the humble beginnings, his grit in following his dreams. [19:36] Glauco shares the difficulties growing up in Brazilian culture that is traditionally machismo and suppressive, and evangelical.[21:51] Gluaco expresses his relief and gratitude for finally living in a place that allows him to be free and is encouraged to live out his dreams.[26:00] Glauco moves to New York where he feels a burning desire to do more than dance, something that allows the human connection. [29:14] When moving to New York, a director sees Glauco perform and offers him a role in a short film about dancing. [31:02] Glauco reveals that most opportunities that have come into his life have been through connecting with people.[34:37] Staying out of trouble is Glauco's #1 advice to his younger self, but through this, he recognizes that his aggressions as a kid acted as a way to protect himself. [38:46] Glauco and Jay discuss how people don't change without new experiences which also means you cannot judge people without people having a chance to be confronted in what they believe in.[40:30] Glauco confesses how therapy was his savior in overcoming and accepting past trauma. He feels that the only way to help others in seeking mental help is by setting the example.[42:58] Charity: Disciple Actors Guild; helps performers pay their rent and bills [46:01] Glauco shares heartwarming messages he has received on social media [48:34] Jay and Glauco discuss the very prominent body dysmorphia in dance and how we judge ourselves to the worst degrees.[51:00] Plugs: 2 short films that will be out in June. In Rio, Glauco danced with the Rio Dance Company (modern dance), as well as with the integrated dance company ANDEF (disability dance). In 2012, Glauco represented Brazil in the closing ceremony of the Paralympic games in London. And from 2015 to 2017 Glauco acted and danced lead roles at Momenta Dance Company with a repertoire including Doris Humphrey, Martha Graham and Charles Weidman, as well as classic choreographers like August Bournonville, Mikhail Fokine, Jules Perrot and Marius Petipa; and disability choreographers Alice Sheppard and Ginger Lane. At Momenta, a dance piece entitled Meloudious Marco was created for Glauco in which he was featured in the lead role of Marco. Glauco was drawn to NYC in early 2017 and was given a scholarship in at Alvin Ailey from 2017 to 2018. In 2018, he was the featured dancer in Aria, a duet choreographed for him by Pedro Ruiz, with live accompaniment by the Camerata NY Orchestra. Glauco danced and acted the following year in Sasha Spielvogel's new musical Come Back Once More So I Can Say Goodbye — a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. Glauco's next featured role was in Joshua Bergasse's musical A Crossing, performed with Barrington Stage Company. Glauco has teamed several times, beginning in 2018 to the present, with the award-winning German dancer/director Severine Reisp. Their films have been recognized in a number of international film festivals: A Tango to Remember– Best Romance Film, Los Angeles Film Awards; Best Woman Filmmaker, The Atman Film Festival; Cinematic Award Winner, Cyprus International Film Festival; Ruminate– Best Musical and Best Dance Choreography, Oniros Film Awards; Best Musical/Dance Film, Los Angeles Film Awards. Another film, Lucid, written and directed by Juan Wang has received a Best Film award from The Heibei Television Artists Association. Glauco costarred in this short film with the beautiful and talentedactress and formerAmerican Ballet Theater dancer, Elina GoldeMiettinen. Another film project that Glauco and Elina collaborated on Stop What You're Doing(Music Video), directed by Severine Reisp. This music video won Best Music Video at the Athens International Digital Film Festival Award. On TV, Glauco most notably had a featured comic role in a promo commercialfor Betty in New York, and last January Glauco played the devious Pawnbroker on The Investigation Discovery Channel in Homicide City: Charlotte. Drawn to the New York theater scene, Glauco has worked nonstop onstage for the past three years, working often with Triangle Theater and The Snarks, ACC and EAG. His New York debut was as the romantic lead, Peter Latham, in Pierre Barillet's Forty Carats. His comic turn was followed by his hilarious performance as the effete Bob Lamb in Tina Howe's Museum. In a series of scene nights, Glauco's range has covered the hot-headed role of Ken in John Logan's Red, the sweet-hearted Cornelius in Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker, the deceptive Morris Townsend in Ruth and Augustus Goetz's The Heiress, and the diabolic Adolf Eichmann Raul Wallenberg's Saved Me. In Soledad Bailada y Casi Compartida, presented at the University of Seville, and on tour around Spain. Glauco has been thrilled to work alongside Broadway and West End actors Anthony Newfield, Alison Fraser and Karen Archer in Richard Alleman's new play Adrift, playing the Brazilian, and provocative Zumba instructor, Flavio. Glauco has been honored to be part of special performances to benefit the Episcopal Actors' Guild and the Cape May Stage. Reviewed in the Times Square Chronicles, “Betsy (Alison Fraser) longs for something more, alongside interactions of the less virtuous kind with the handsome and sweet-talking Flavio, played seductively by the appealing Glauco Araujo (Spielvogel's Come Back Once More).” Recently, Glauco performed in a short bio-pic entitled Dance for Freedom directed by Severine Reisp, highlighting the challenges people of color face today, and which has garnered recognition as the First-Place Recipient of the Dr. David Milch Foundation/CCNY Award in short film competition. In her review, juror Timberkly Whitfield, program executive and producer for A&E, as well as a host on the History Channel and A&E, wrote: “Glauco Araujo is a beautiful dancer and you capture him in such a way that really moved me. I felt inspired by his story that even in the face of racism he doesn't see himself as a victim. Strong production values. You checked all the boxes on this one — FANTASTIC!”  Link from past Interviews  http://diversityrulesmagazine.com/2021/02/28/march-feature-interview-glauco-araujo/http://www.ourtownny.com/news/the-universal-language-of-the-arts-YE1547010https://elespecial.com/glauco-araujo-el-bailarin-que-ha-conquistado-de-brasil-new-yorkhttps://www.noticiali.com/glauco-araujo-sobreviviendo-a-traves-de-la-creatividad/

Mitzi Heath, Co-Artistic Director of the Lafayette Ballet Theatre, provides a delightful take on why she has the most wonderful job in the world.  On this episode of Discover Lafayette, Mitzi speaks about the theater and its conservatory, as well as upcoming tryouts for the 2018 annual Nutcracker Ballet performance to be held December 8-9, 2018 at the Heymann Center. Lafayette Ballet Theatre (LBT) was founded in 1982, filling the need for a classical ballet company in our community. Its official school, Dance Conservatory, was established the previous year and supplies 90 percent of the company's dancers. Lafayette Ballet Theater is run by sisters Shannon and Mitzi Heath, both of whom were professional dancers. Their mother, Patty Heath, designs and creates the costumes: with tutus running up to $5,000 each, any talented young dancer has access to the appropriate costume no matter their financial situation. Committed to their craft, the Heaths pour their hearts, souls, and talents into LBT in order to sustain opportunities for classical ballet training and performances in our area. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, funding for LBT is generated through community financial support, grants, and tuition from the Dance Conservatory. If you've never seen a live performance of the Nutcracker Ballet, please add this to your bucket list of life's beautiful experiences. Guest artists from the Pacific Northwest Ballet and the entire dance community present this classical ballet in two acts, based on the story of E. T. A. Hoffmann's "Nutcracker and the King of Mice" with original music of Peter Tchaikovsky. More than just dance, the Nutcracker is a tradition for many families who view this as the start of the holiday season. Mitzi explained that with over 150 young dancers needed for this year's Nutcracker Ballet, they are reaching out to invite all area dancers who are at least 8 years old, have completed one full year of ballet study, and be currently enrolled in an established dance program. Auditions take place Sept. 8-9 for two performances of the full-length classical ballet, “The Nutcracker.”  Sept. 8 auditions are for advanced to professional dancers, ages 15 through adult. Sept. 9 auditions are for dancers ages 8 through 14. Auditions are scheduled to take place at Lafayette Ballet Theatre, 201 Petroleum Drive, Lafayette LA. The cost is $35 to audition, and performers selected will incur a $300 charge which covers their costumes and all related expenses for the performance. Through the support of the community, LBT has sustained its place as Acadiana's professional ballet company, offering 28-week contracted positions to local artists, and a long-term student scholarship program. LBT currently maintains an extensive complimentary ticket program, providing underprivileged children and adults, A Night at the Ballet, as well as supporting all of its educational programs that reach over 2500 children annually in schools and at the theater. LBT students have gained acceptance into the School of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Houston Ballet and many more. Mitzi shared that the ideal age for an aspiring ballet dancer is age 8, and training takes about 12 years for a serious student. Similar to a ball player, ballet is an athletic endeavor and not for the undisciplined! Maestro Classical podcast: episode 7, a holiday celebration feat. Tchaikovsky and J.S. Bach. 1. The London Symphony Orchestra "Nutcracker Ballet Suite: Waltz Of The Flowers" (mp3) from "Tchaikovsky: Nutcracker Suite / 1812 Overture" (Everest Records) Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a Russian composer of the Romantic era. While not part of the nationalistic music group known as "The Five", Tchaikovsky wrote music which, in the opinion of Harold C. Schonberg, was distinctly Russian: plangent, introspective, with modally-inflected melody and harmony. Despite the compositional efforts of The Five, Tchaikovsky dominates 19th century Russian music as its greatest talent. While his formal conservatory training instilled in him Western-oriented attitudes and techniques, his essential nature, as he always insisted, remained Russian. This was true both in his use of actual folk song and his deep absorption in Russian life and ways of thought. His natural gifts, especially for melody (what he called the "lyrical idea"), give his music a permanent appeal. However, it was his hard-won though secure and professional technique, plus his ability to use it for the expression of his emotional life, which allowed him to realize his potential more fully than any of his major Russian contemporaries. The Nutcracker is one of Tchaikovsky's best known works. While it has been criticized as the least substantial of the composer's three ballets, it should be remembered that Tchaikovsky was restricted by a rigorous scenario supplied by Marius Petipa. This scenario provided no opportunity for the expression of human feelings beyond the most trivial and confined Tchaikovsky mostly within a world of tinsel, sweets and fantasy. Yet, at its best, the melodies are charming and pretty, and by this time Tchaikovsky's virtuosity at orchestration and counterpoint ensured an endless fascination in the surface attractiveness of the score. The Nutcracker, Op. 71, is a fairy tale-ballet in two acts, three scenes, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, composed in 1891–92. Alexandre Dumas père's adaptation of the story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" by E.T.A. Hoffmann was set to music by Tchaikovsky (written by Marius Petipa and commissioned by the director of the Imperial Theatres Ivan Vsevolozhsky in 1891). In Western countries, this ballet has become perhaps the most popular ballet, performed primarily around Christmas time. The composer made a selection of eight of the more popular numbers from the ballet before the ballet's December 1892 premiere, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, intended for concert performance. The suite was first performed, under the composer's direction, on 19 March 1892 at an assembly of the St. Petersburg branch of the Musical Society[1]. The suite became instantly popular; the complete ballet did not achieve its great popularity until around the mid-1960s. Among other things, the score of The Nutcracker is noted for its use of the celesta, an instrument that the composer had already employed in his much lesser known symphonic ballad The Voyevoda (premiered 1891).^ Although well-known in The Nutcracker as the featured solo instrument in the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from Act II, it is employed elsewhere in the same act. Bach: Weihnachts-Oratorium - Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248" (Musica Omnia) The greatest musical setting of the Christmas story, compiled by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1734. Based on the Gospel of St. Luke, the text describes the nativity of Jesus and is adorned by some of Bach's most colourful and beautiful music. In modern performance, the piece is generally either presented as a whole, or split into two equal sections. The total running time for the entire work is nearly three hours. Scored for an Evangelist, four vocal soloists, four part chorus and full baroque orchestra, including trumpets, timpani and horns, the Christmas Oratorio is among Bach's best-loved works. The Boston Bach Ensemble was founded in 1992 by Julian Wachner and Peter Watchorn, and performed principally at Boston University. It has performed cantatas, oratorios and masses by J. S. Bach, and features a choir of twenty young professional singers and a period instrument orchestra comprising some of the leading specialist musicians from the US, Canada, Australia and Europe. In 1998 the BBE recorded a celebrated live performance of Bach's Christmas Oratorio, which featured distinguished vocal soloists, including the celebrated Dutch baritone, Max van Egmond.
