In 2022, roughly 3 billion people, or one in every three people in the world, regularly played computer games, either on their phone, computer, or some kind of gaming console. Analysts predict that the video game market will bring in over $200 billion in 2024. If you think about it, people are wired to play games, it's actually something that's helped us evolve as a species. The Arsht Rockefeller Foundation has put together an initiative to share climate-change-resiliency solutions by 2030. Their goal: to reach one billion people. Video games have shown they not only bring people together, but also help mobilize collective action. But what about the environmental impact? We take a look at what digital games can cost the planet as well as the benefits of designing climate-resilient video games. Rosemary Mann leads video gaming strategy at the Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center. Chance Glasco is the creative director of Good Dog Studios and a nonresident senior fellow at the Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center. We had the pleasure of interviewing Ben Abraham over Zoom video!award-winning singer-songwriter Ben Abraham recently released his sophomore album Friendly Fire (which has already done almost 10 million streams!) The album is a really beautiful + deeply personal body of work that highlights Ben's almost decade-long odyssey navigating both his sexuality + spirituality following the release of his debut album Sirens. Another Falling Star is based on a conversation Ben had with Kesha about “getting high in Hollywood” and about the countless artists who move to LA with high hopes + big dreams. (The two also co-wrote her double-Platinum, Grammy-nominated smash single “Praying” together). As for the inspiration behind the album -- following the release of Sirens, while engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Ben became romantically involved with another man – ending the relationship and resulting in a huge crisis of faith for him as a devout Christian. He detailed this in a powerful note to fans last month. Sirens was met with critical acclaim upon its release in 2014, including from the New York Times who heralded it as “a debut of remarkable depth.” The record catalyzed his career as an in-demand songwriter for artists like The Chicks, Gallant, Ben Platt & Demi Lovato. In 2014, Australian artist Ben Abraham released his debut album, Sirens to critical acclaim. Riding high on his professional success, Abraham was blissfully unaware of the impending heartbreak and faith crisis that would rock his personal life. However, like a phoenix, he rose from the ashes and coped in the best way he knew how, music. Abraham began pouring some of his most personal thoughts over a baby grand piano. In 2022, those honest lyrics and soulful melodies have culminated with his sophomore album, Friendly Fire via Atlantic Records. We chatted with the award-winning singer-songwriter about the new album, how a conversation with Kesha inspired a lyric in his introspective new single “Another Falling Star,” and more! Our regular podcast host Mattie Brice needs a bit of extra time for her latest interview, so we've dug into our archives again for yet another heretofore unheard Critical Distance Confab episode. In this installment, Eric Swain interviews our very own founder and former head curator Ben Abraham. Part of the original games blogger boom in 2007-2008, Ben Abraham has always found himself focused on the community of critics. It led him to try and bridge many of those working unknown and segregated by the internet's distance to eventually founding a curation site (this one!) to bring all the best writing. Also in this podcast, we discuss some of his other notable projects and his obsession with Far Cry 2, the focal point of a few of those projects. In our most puerile episode to date, Joel reveals that he doesn't know anything about DMC: Devil May Cry, Vick tries to convince us to start playing Candy Crush before it's too late, and Dave apologizes for maligning The Blockheads which as it turns out, is a pretty good game! Oh and Lisa has a blue hat. This week we examine the topic of in-game Tutorials. Along the way we make reference to Temple Run 2, Zookeeper and Half Life to name a few. We also highly recommend watching Egoraptor's seminal (hurhur) work, Sequelitis - Mega Man Classic vs. Mega Man X. What do you guys think? Are in-game tutorials really necessary? Can we live without them? Tell us what you think via email or tweet us @StaringScreens. Don't forget, if you get your friends to listen to the podcast and follow us on Twitter, we'll send you something awesome. /InvisibleCarrotDangle Links: The #Objectify event planned by Leigh Alexander and Ben Abraham… … and why they (rightly) decided to call it off.

Of course, we here at the Moving Pixels blog are fans of the work done over at the Critical Distance web site, a site interested in serving in a curatorial role in highlighting and maintaining various discussions in video game criticism. Conceived by Ben Abraham and launched in 2009, Critical Distance provides a weekly update of some of the best video game criticism published around the internet. Additionally, they provide a number of critical compilations of writings done by various critics, journalists, and academics on significant game titles.   We wanted to sit down and talk with Ben and fellow Critical Distance contributor, Eric Swain, to talk a little bit about the site, what purpose they see it serving in the emerging conversation about games, and how they manage the Herculean task of locating and managing such a vast array of voices.

VGHVI Latest Thoughts Podcast with Michael Abbott, the Brainy Gamer. Roger and Michael discuss the state of academic discourse about games in relation to the "middle circle" of game criticism, and the table we think VGHVI brings to the conversation. Features Roger Travis and Michael Abbott. Produced by Randy Ma.(Here's a direct link to the podcast.)Apologies for the lowness of my voice both in frequency and in volume. Critical Distance Confab

Welcome to Episode 1 of the Critical Distance Confab. The CDC podcast is a weekly discussion with a cast drawn from an irregular pool of videogame bloggers and contributors to the Critical Distance website. We discuss issues of design, culture, art, and the industry viewed through the lens of videogame criticism. In this, the first of a tentatively scheduled weekly podcast, we have an extended discussion about the daunting topic that is Games Criticism. Our cast for this episode includes: Ben Abraham, Randy Ma (aka demonicmurry), Travis Megill, Alex Myers, David Sahlin, and Eric Swain. I apologize for the audio quality as this is our first attempt at a podcast - rest assured that the quality of the recording will improve in subsequent episodes. With that in mind we hope you enjoy the first episode and stay tuned for more in the coming weeks.
