I enjoyed having my bretheren Sean on the podcast. Sean is an A & R at Cinematic Music Group and also runs his own management company Mula Group; where he manages artists like: Bankroll Got It, Yungeenace, and Ola Runt. He's a great dude, a real grinder, and I think he's on his way to making a quick billion. Hearing the come up stories of people on the executive side of entertainment has been fascinating for me. Growing up on the East Side of Cincinnati, life wasn't easy for Roadrunner TB. Brought up by his grandma, TB lived in the infamous Saint Ledgers Apartment Buildings. From a young age he knew that his only options were to either play sports or sell drugs, making it inevitable for TB to get involved in the streets. Gifted in basketball and football, he soon realized his chances to go pro were slim after tearing his ACL. As a kid, TB began freestyling and recording with friends and collaborators from his neighborhood. While balancing minimum wage jobs and college, TB began “road running” hoping to carve out a better life for his young daughter. Being the realist that he is, he became conscious that rap would be his only way out of Evanston. TB locked in the studio and completed “STL Stories" and dropped the viral hit “33”. As one of Cinematic Music Group's brightest stars, TB hopes to put Cincinnati and his “blender music” on the map. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theprogressreportpodcast/support

Today’s guest is one of the most in-demand rap producers of the decade. He’s produced entire projects and hundreds of thundering, wildly different beats for critically-acclaimed rappers like Rico Nasty, Vince Staples, Freddie Gibbs, Denzel Curry, Key!, 03 Greedo, JPEGMAFIA, and Ski Mask the Slump God. Today, the 29-year-old’s signature tag (“Woah, Kenny!”) is virtually inescapable. Born and raised in Connecticut, today’s guest inherited his eclectic ear from his father, whose tastes ranged from Sheryl Crow to Dr. Dre. He played drums and guitar throughout his childhood and began making beats in high school, imitating idols like Timbaland and Pharrell. While studying music business at Berklee College of Music, he interned for renowned rap label Cinematic Music Group and began placing beats with rappers like Schoolboy Q (“Party”), Smoke DZA, and Ab-Soul (“Hunnid Stax”). During his senior year, he moved to Los Angeles and made a brief but successful foray into EDM. Once he’d accrued enough funds DJing around the world, Kenny returned to rap and opened The Cave, one of the most vital studios in contemporary rap. He is also a member of D.O.T.S. (Don’t Overthink Shit). A tight-knit and ever-evolving creative team, D.O.T.S. assists artists with every aspect of their careers, whether that’s beats and music videos or merch and art direction. They are creative midwives, helping musicians birth all their gestating ideas. And The Writer Is… Kenny Beats!Artwork: Michael Richey White See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Enter the Wu-Tang. Return to the 36 Chambers. People listening to these albums by the Wu-Tang Clan and its members likely never knew about Sophia Chang: a Korean-Canadian woman who worked with members like RZA, ODB and Method Man. Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest called Sophia Chang “an integral part of the golden era of hip-hop.” The Baddest Bitch in the Room (Catapult, 2020) charts Sophia Chang’s life, from her childhood in Vancouver, through time in New York’s hip-hop scene and travels between the United States and China managing martial arts, through to the present day. Sophia Chang is the music business matriarchitect who managed Ol’ Dirty Bastard, RZA, GZA, D’Angelo, Raphael Saadiq, Q Tip, and A Tribe Called Quest as well as working with Paul Simon. She did marketing at Atlantic, A&R at Jive, A&R Admin at Universal, as well as serving as General Manager of RZA’s Razor Sharp Records, Cinematic Music Group, and Joey Bada$$’ Pro Era Records. Sophia is currently a screenwriter and author developing numerous TV properties, including a scripted series at FX based on her memoir “The Baddest Bitch in the Room”. She trained with and managed a Shaolin Monk, who became her partner and father of her children. She produced runway shows for Vivienne Tam and "Project Runway All Stars," and recently created Unlock Her Potential, a program that provides mentorship for women of color. In this interview, Sophia and I talk about her life: her time in the music business, her relationship with hip-hop, and her transition to martial arts and other cultural activities. Joey grew up around the corner from the Macy projects in Brooklyn. Initially he had his sights set on becoming an Actor and was enrolled in the drama class at his school. There he met up with his future Pro Era collaborators and they would rap at lunch, in class, after school pretty much all the time. He knew about Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole before 99% of the world did and studied them as they were coming up. He would find success early when a video of him rapping at 15 would catch the attention of Jonny Shipes from Cinematic Music Group.
