Show #807 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 12th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. FORD-VW JOINT VENTURE DETAILS FINALIZED Two years ago, Ford and VW announced they’d explore the possibility of jointly developing vehicles. A year later, they expanded their partnership, and today, the two detail the specifics. As early as next year, we could see the two commercial vans arrive, too. The smaller city van will be based on the latest VW Caddy model, while the one-ton cargo van is likely a replacement for the Ford Transit." reports Motor1: "Ford will also build an electric vehicle for Europe using Volkswagen’s electric MEB platform. Eight million vans and trucks could be produced over the products’ life cycles, according to the companies. That doesn’t include the estimated 600,000-plus EVs Ford could build every year, either." https://www.motor1.com/news/428019/ford-volkswagen-finalize-joint-venture/ VW E-GOLF #1 IN MAY IN NETHERLANDS, TESLA MODEL 3 LEADER IN 2020 " last month we saw the veteran VW e-Golf win its first monthly best seller title in 15 months, with 221 deliveries, just edging out April’s best seller, the Kia Niro EV (217 units) and its cousin, the Hyundai Kona EV (212)." says CleanTechnica: "Other surprises last month were the #6 Volvo XC40 PHEV and #7 Ford Kuga PHEV, with the Swede being last month’s best selling PHEV while the American crossover registered its best score so far, with 118 units, the highest score for a Ford in this market since December 2015, when 538 C-Max Energi (remember this one?) were registered. And why is this interesting? After years of Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV domination, the PHEV race is now more open" https://cleantechnica.com/2020/06/10/vw-e-golf-1-in-may-in-netherlands-tesla-model-3-leader-in-2020/ CANADIAN SHOP CRACKED TESLA'S ACCELERATION BOOST The Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD and Performance versions are engineered similarly, with Tesla previously saying motors which tested to have higher performance were to be used in the faster version. However more recently there are reports that the cars are identical. And if you do own a LR AWD you can go back to Tesla anytime, pay $2000 and they'll unlock more performance. "What if you could bypass Tesla entirely and get your performance boost for just over half the price? a shop in Quebec, Canada called Simon André figured out how to swap a single-motor Tesla Model 3 to a dual-motor setup, and part of doing that meant busting into the power inverter's software to reconfigure it. Once the shop hacked its way through Tesla's IP, it found that switching to dual motors wasn't the only thing it could do. It could also add Tesla's 50 horsepower Acceleration Boost without clearance from the Tesla mothership." writes CNET: "Acceleration Boost usually would set you back $2,000 -- that's one hell of an in-app purchase -- but once this shop figured out how to unlock the boost itself. Now, the shop's owner spun off a new (and likely short-lived) company called Ingenext that offers an increase of just $1,100 as the "Boost 50" upgrade. even a full conversion from Model 3 Dual Motor to Performance spec which it calls the Ghost upgrade and adds 150 horsepower to your car." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-shop-hacks-acceleration-boost-model-3/ HYUNDAI AND KIA HONING HEAT-PUMP TECH "Hyundai and Kia, which share their parent company and some research and development resources, began using heat pumps in 2014 on the first-generation Kia Soul EV, and now most (but not all) of the two automakers' electric cars use them. As with other automakers, the heat pumps in current Hyundai and Kia vehicles turn refrigerant from a liquid to a gas, which is used to heat the cabin. This is more efficient than the resistance heating used in traditional systems, and minimizes the amount of energy drawn from the battery pack." says Green Car Reports: "The latest system is able to scavenge heat from a wide array of components, including the drive motor, inverter, onboard charger, and the battery pack itself, according to Hyundai. That heat is what turns the liquid refrigerant into a gas. A recent test of 20 EVs by the Norwegian Automotive Federation (NAF) appeared to prove Hyundai and Kia's point. In that test, a European-spec Hyundai Kona Electric not only recorded the longest range in cold weather, it also came closest to its European WLTP range rating, achieving 91% of that figure. Hyundai and Kia said they are continuing to test and refine their heat-pump tech, hoping to make additional improvements for next-generation EVs." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1128440_hyundai-and-kia-honing-heat-pump-tech-for-next-generation-evs ALL-ELECTRIC CITROEN E-C4 CROSSOVER DEBUT ANNOUNCED FOR JUNE 30 "The C4 Cactus was one of the quirkiest looking recent Citroens that really hearkened back to the wacky character of older models sold by the dual chevron brand. Now it’s going to be replaced by an all-new model that ditches the Cactus from its name and is also available with a pure electric powertrain for the first time ever. This all-electric model is going to be called the e-C4 and Citroen has now confirmed that it will be officially unveiled on June 30" reports Yahoo! News: "What we already knew about the model was the fact that it is going to be underpinned by the same CMP platform atop which smaller models like the Peugeot e-208 and e-2008, as well as the DS3 Crossback are built. And the electric e-C4 variant will most likely feature the exact same battery pack and motor setup. This means it’s going to have 136 bhp and 260 Nm (192 pound-feet) of torque and it will draw from a 50 kWh battery pack. The similar-size e-2008 has a claimed WLTP range of 310 km (193 miles), and we expect the e-C4 to be very similar in this respect." https://uk.news.yahoo.com/electric-citroen-e-c4-crossover-130000396.html LG CHEM HAS BEGUN MASS PRODUCTION OF NCM712 BATTERIES IN POLAND "LG Chem began mass production of NCM712 batteries in the 1st quarter of 2020. These batteries dramatically cut down on the use of cobalt in electric vehicle batteries (7 parts nickel to 1 part cobalt to 2 parts manganese), thus helping to cut costs. These batteries also have greater energy density than previous batteries" says Clean Technica: "The Wroclaw LG Chem plant is the largest EV battery production facility in Europe and mostly produces batteries for the Renault Zoe and Volkswagen Group vehicles (such as the Audi e-tron and Porsche Taycan). These particular batteries, “LGX E78” batteries, are reportedly being used in the Volkswagen ID.3 and new Renault Zoe." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/06/11/lg-chem-began-mass-production-of-ncm712-batteries-in-poland-in-q1/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK How far does a plug-in hybrid need to drive on EV power only? At that time we had a company car, a 1968 Mercedes-Benz 200D, which is very stately classic 4 door sedan, with a 4 cylinder 1.9 liter diesel engine. It was a very well built and beautiful car that I have fond memories of. It would be amazing to see it back on the road as an electric vehicle. Cameron Hall I would convert the 1986 Toyota Celica GT-S I once owned. The 'S' stood for the suspension which was from the Supra! Jim Myers My 1962 E type Jaguar. Spun a rod bearing 2 weeks after I bought it and took 3 shops and 2 years to find someone who could rebuild the engine. I live in Washington State. Loved driving that car. Victor Wood I would convert my old Toyota MR2 Roadster. Benjamin Ford I would convert my Peugeot Partner. Such a versatile vehicle for a family. Cheap to buy, had ours from new, lasted 13 years before becoming too expensive to repair. With a decent motor and battery it would still make a good vehicle for our needs. Love our LEAF! D Whatley EV Conversion? My 21 yr old 1999 Mercedes SLK230. I loved this car and didn't trade it in but now it sits undriven since buying my 2018 M3 David Guerriero QUESTION OF THE WEEK. I currently drive a 2012 Audi A5 convertible, bought used with low miles. LOVE IT! Will they ever build a convertible EV? I buy my cars lightly used. My next car will be an EV or high ev miles PHEV. I can not afford to buy a brand new car/EV that I like. My EV will be used unless I hit the lottery! JIM PARTRIDGE I answer the Citroen ID-19 (also owned a couple DS-21’s so they would be fine. Back “in the day.”) I currently stretched my budget and bought a Model 3 (last September.) Love all the electric parts, but I thought the Citroens rode better and were narrower. Definitely the ride (I would guess the: inboard disk brakes, comfortable seats, and space packaging don’t count anymore vs. the Model 3) The Hydro-peunmatic Ride system and a bit narrower car are the important parts. SERVULUS BILLY It was 1984 in Indianapolis when I drove by the dealer with no intention or previous thought of buying a new car..... and there she stood elevated above all the other cars as if to say here I am! Hahaha. I was hooked an immediate made a uturn.... a lil negotiation and a new line of credit and we were together .... a 1983 Chevy Camaro with T-tops in metallic blue I was in love. Hahaha. Yes given the option this would be my electrified car. Sadly she was totaled by a drunk driver in 1988. I cried like a baby....really!...... love lost. RIP my Chey. I surely enjoyed my time with that car....great memories indeed. PHILIP TRAUTMAN This just about the first QOTW that required no thought whatsoever. I owned a Honda Element from 2005 until 2019 when we gave it to our grandson. Despite having the aerodynamics and styling of a toaster, I loved that car. The utilitarian inside swallowed almost anything I tried to put in it without getting destroyed, and rugged exterior panels meant less to worry about on the outside too. Even when I bought the car in 2005, I remember thinking there was plenty of room for a battery and hoping for a future EV version. Now we’re moving, and I miss the utility of that car. Honda stopped making it in 2011, and even gas versions are hard to find. An EV model, of course, never materialized. MARK, MAINE USA I wish my current car, a 2014 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid could be a full electric. I love the AWD and ground clearance. It’s not much of a hybridwith a 7kwh battery but I’d love it with an all electric drivetrain. QUESTION OF THE WEEK …we take a break for a week and QotW is back on Sunday 10th May I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 233 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Citroens avhopp, Hur ser det ut i Toyota 2020 och lite till
Ryan and Tony preview East African Safari Rally which RC flies off this week to do. Twice Roger Albert Clark winner Marty McCormack previews the classic event starting in the UK this week and team time American Rally Champion and hall of fame inductee David Higgins talks his season and his story of various manufacture supported seats over his career and Subaru USA. Also we have a late entry from Jack Benyon for his AOB! We recorded this week prior to the announcement of Citroens departure from WRC, we will discuss this fully next week.
After talking about petrols cars with reseve fuel tanks and how far you can drive once the gauge goes past "empty", Max called up with a wealth of knowledge on one particular make of vehicle. LISTEN TO THE FULL AUDIO ABOVE.
Lite smått o gott, Citroens avhopp, Hur ser det ut i Toyota 2020?, och hur ser ut för Tidemand säsongen 2020
In this mildly biased podcast, Mike, Jim and Phil discuss the merits of 100 years of Citroen. Ok, they aren't entirely positive, but it all comes from a good place.... Littlehampton! The upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed, Ford Europe's "changes", and things that you didn't know before you had to transport children in your car are also talked about, as is a charity event that Phil is involved with to raise money for Cancer Research UK. L'Xagone Challenge 2019 will see a group of 20+ year old Citroens each drive over 3000 miles around France. "Challenge" is the word! Today we are joined by guest and automotive photographer extraordinaire, Josh Hway. We discuss Citroens at Pebble Beach, the new "Eclipse" Cross, automotive keys over the years, and a special Porsche engine.
We have GoPro photographer Sean Custer "SHIROKUROSTREET" on instagram, in the studio to talk to us about his love for Citroens, Volvos and Lincolns. Sean is a really cool guy with a passion for cars that are a little outside the box. Lane's VW has a major problem, bryan's boat isn't running, and more project updates, including bryan's update on his quest for a car cover for the Mercedes. As always, we end the show with some trivia. Thanks for listening! Please share the podcast with your friends and rate and review the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher.
