In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing WICKED LITTLE LETTERS (2023), from director Thea Sharrock with a screenplay by Jonny Sweet.  Scandal and outrage tear the small English town of Littlehampton apart as extremely vulgar letters begin first appearing and targeting the Swan household, and in particular, Edith (Olivia Colman), and rowdy Rose (Jessie Buckley) is soon charged.  But once the bawdy letter writer targets more of the local's mailboxes and suspecting there's more here than meets the eye, a gaggle of the town's women - Gladys (Anjana Vasan), Mabel (Eileen Atkins), Ann (Joanna Scanlan) and Kate (Lolly Adefope) - are soon on the case to solve this mystery.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 40 m, is rated R and is currently streaming on Netflix.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. This episode of the podcast goes out to a very formidable woman, colleague and friend - HBD Christina D! #WickedLittleLetters  #Thea Sharrock  #JonnySweet  #OliviaColman  #Edith  #JessieBuckley  #Rose  #TimothySpall  #Edward  #GemmaJones  #Victoria  #AnjanaVasan  #Gladys  #EileenAtkins  #Mabel  #JoannaScanlan  #Ann  #LollyAdefope  #Kate  #AlishaWeir  #Nancy  #MalachiKirby  #Bill  #HughSkinner  #ConstablePapperwick  #PaulChahidi  #ConstableSpedding  #StrangerThanFiction  #TrueStory  #FemaleFilmmakerFriday  #FridayFamilyFilmNight --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jokagoge/support

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 11, 2024 is: scapegoat • SKAYP-goat • noun A scapegoat is a person who is unfairly blamed for something others have done. // The CFO was made the scapegoat for the company's failures. See the entry > Examples: "It's a lively, funny movie, as more of Littlehampton's locals start getting aggressive letters packed with the same redundant profanity, and respond to them with absolute horror—and a certain amount of glee at having such a deliciously transgressive scandal to chew over, and such a perfect scapegoat as Rose to blame for all of it." — Tasha Robinson, Polygon.com, 27 July 2024 Did you know? On Yom Kippur, the ancient Hebrews would sacrifice one goat for God and lead another one, over whom all the sins of Israel had been confessed, into the wilderness to bear the sins of the people away. The ceremony is described in Leviticus, where it is said that one lot shall be cast for God and one for "Azazel." Modern scholars usually interpret Azazel (ʽazāzēl in Hebrew) as being the name of a demon living in the desert, but ancient biblical translators thought ʽazāzēl referred to the goat itself, apparently confusing the word with the Hebrew phrase ʽēz 'ōzēl, meaning "goat that departs." Thus, in a 16th century English translation, the word for Azazel/the goat was rendered as scapegoote—that is, "goat that escapes." The extended senses of scapegoat we use today evolved from this biblical use.

Natalie welcomes renowned British writer Simon Brett, known for his mystery and crime thrillers, including the humorous whodunit "Bones Under the Beach Hut." Simon shares insights into his writing process, the inspiration behind his characters, and his own experiences as a beach hut owner in Littlehampton. The conversation explores the quirks of beach hut communities, the challenges of writing, and the joy of creating engaging characters. Simon also discusses his latest book, "A Messy Murder," which explores themes of decluttering and personal struggles.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Background of Simon Brett: Simon Brett is a prolific British author known for his mystery and crime thrillers, having published over a hundred books since 1975. He has also written humorous works and was awarded an OBE for his contributions to literature. Inspiration for "Bones Under the Beach Hut": The book was inspired by the beach hut community in Littlehampton, where the author became a beach hut owner after writing the novel. The setting allowed for a humorous exploration of the quirks and dynamics within beach hut associations. Character Development: The characters Carol and Jude in the Feathering series reflect different aspects of the author's personality. Carol is portrayed as self-conscious and anxious, while Jude is more laid-back and adventurous, creating ongoing conflict and depth in their interactions. Writing Process: The author emphasises the psychological challenges of writing, including feelings of self-doubt and the struggle to maintain momentum. He likens the writing process to carpentry or Lego, where structuring the plot is essential before allowing characters to take over. Latest Work - "A Messy Murder": This book features a declutterer as the main character and addresses more serious themes such as mental illness and bereavement. The inspiration came from a real-life declutterer who shared intriguing stories, leading to the creation of a new series. BEST MOMENTS "I thought, oh, that'd be a really good background for... a crime novel about a beach hut." "It sounded like a body in the library or somebody, you know, decluttering and accidentally stumbling upon a body." "I mean, the prices of beach huts are just amazing... If you're shrewd, it's a good way of investing." EPISODE RESOURCES A Messy Murder (The Decluttering mysteries Book 4) - Kindle edition by Brett, Simon. I was waiting at the KL airport on my way to Vietnam. I met a Vietnamese woman who spoke fair English. We talked about Jesus as we waited to catch our flight. We kept in touch via email, always talking about Jesus. Now she and her family live in Adelaide… Today I was waiting at the supermarket checkout in Littlehampton. A busy week in non league so we start with the Non League paper round-up. Jon Couch helps go through a vast array of stuff including the FA Trophy final, The FA Vase final and the National League Play-offs which get underway on Monday. Before all that though on Saturday its the National League Step 2 play-off finals as we find out who will join Gateshead and Maidstone United in promotion to the top tier for next season. Plus we chat about some of the many managerial changes and swaps that have happened this week. Phil Annets gives us the stats on the FA Vase final with his @FAVaseFactFile hat on and next up is a Chairman of one of those club's in Sunday's final. Sounding relaxed and ready, Rob McAlees is the kind of Chairman you would think most managers and players would want to work under. They clearly do as his joint management team seem on point and firmly part of the club and the thriving community at Littlehampton Town hoping to make further history this season. Back on the show for the second time, this season is a manager involved in one of those play-off finals on Saturday. He's switched clubs since we last spoke and got his new club into the play-offs making history already and now is one game from leading the club to a return to the top level of non league football. Paul Cox has had the necessary impact on Boston United since his arrival in January and with plenty of success and experience on his CV he is confident of a result but also has his feet firmly grounded.

Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools

Today we focus on EYFS with Ben Case from the Foundation Stage Forum and Tapestry - An Online Learning Journal. The Foundation Stage Forum is a gathering place for anyone involved in Early Years and Primary teaching and learning. Tapestry builds a very special record of a child’s experiences, development and learning journey through their early years and primary education. Using photos, videos and diary entries, a teacher or early years practitioner, along with the child’s parents, ‘weaves’ the story of the child and how they are growing and developing. As a Reception teacher at a school in Littlehampton, Ben was one of Tapestry's early customers. He made good use of the helpful Product Support Team, sending them lots of emails. Eventually, he was invited to come and meet everyone at ‘Tapestry Towers’. He must have made a good impression because a few years later he found himself at his very own desk at the new Tapestry HQ. Ben now uses his experience of teaching 4 year olds to help him adjust to working in an office - he finds it comes in handy with his colleagues, as well as making him a knowledgeable Education Advisor! He also tweets (a lot!) and runs the Tapestry Support Group on Facebook. www.eyfs.info/ (www.eyfs.info/) Social Media Information @EYFSF 'Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire' Show Sponsor  The National Association for Primary Education speaks for young children and all who live and work with them.
