In the latest episode of the Hospitality Hangout podcast, Michael Schatzberg “The Restaurant Guy” and Jimmy Frischling “The Finance Guy” sit down with Phil Crawford, the chief technology officer of CKE Restaurants, to explore the ongoing digital revolution in the restaurant industry.CKE Restaurants is a Tennessee-based, privately held company that runs and operates Carl's Jr. and Hardee's. The two regional brands combined represent over 3,800 franchised or company-operated restaurants in 44 states and 43 foreign countries and U.S. territories.Crawford moved from New York City—having previously served as the chief technology officer for Godiva—to Nashville to join CKE in the fall of 2020.“Nashville and New York City are two parts of the spectrum. But the exciting part is that when it comes down to hospitality and technology, there's a lot of synergies within both cities and corporations,” says Crawford. “They both have a desire and drive to be the best they can possibly be… it's all about scale and size, and ensuring that we have the guest experience in mind.”Restaurants—looking to adapt to evolving operational and consumer needs—are moving away from POS systems. Most systems and processes have entered the realm of mobile technology, leading to the creation of more cloud-based systems, direct-to-consumer interactions, analytics, and artificial intelligence to better reach customers.“Any kind of digital ecosystem that's out there that you can infuse the guest experience is where everything's going,” adds Crawford. “It's all about trying to bridge that gap between what we think our consumers know and what they do know, and making it a personalized journey. That's the kind of tech incorporation that we need to be thinking of to become technology evangelists and to have that competitive edge in our industry.”Key Takeaways:[02:22 - 05:36] Introducing Phil Crawford, Chief Technology Officer at CKE Restaurants (Carl Karcher Enterprises)[04:12 - 05:33] Phil's background in hospitality started at 16 at Carl's Jr., to Shake Shack, to CKE[05:53 - 08:42] Phil's take on regional food differences between Nashville and New York City[06:30 - 07:38] New York City and Nashville are different parts of the spectrum, "The bigger we get the smarter we have to act"[07:44 - 08:42] "Being the health conscious Southern California, yoga, acupuncturist freak I am..."[08:46 - 10:13] Talking about Red Burrito and Green Burrito businesses[10:14 - 12:50] The Tech Stack and POS, new innovations in personalization and mobile technology[12:52 - 15:31] Revisiting the pandemic and the adoption of new technology[15:32 - 18:04] Maintaining 3,800 and all the training necessary to run new stores, an education opportunity for franchises[18:05 - 20:31] The pain points in the restaurant operator business, too much technology can be a detriment[20:47 - 22:48] Diving deeper into the digital transformation and education of what drives your business. In the aftermath of the latest escalations of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including Hamas' attack on Israel and Israel's subsequent retaliations in Gaza over the past week and a half, many American corporations have been hesitant to make public statements, including most of the restaurant industry. However, both the Starbucks union and multiple Middle Eastern McDonald's franchisees have expressed firm stances on the conflict, which led to social media boycotts on both sides.During other times of international strife on a global stage, like the Russian attacks on Ukraine last year, or more homegrown conflicts, like the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement and protests during the summer of 2020, restaurant companies were more confident in expressing support for victims and condemning wrongdoers. However, many of these same companies — several of whom have a strong presence in the Middle East — have largely remained silent or declined to comment over the past couple of weeks. Both Papa Johns and Yum Brands' representatives did not respond to multiple requests for comment on the violence in Israel and Gaza, while representatives for Domino's and CKE declined to comment.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: [Linkpost] Solving Quantitative Reasoning Problems with Language Models, published by Yitz on June 30, 2022 on LessWrong. A new paper from Google, in which they get a language model to solve some (of what to me reads as terrifyingly impressive) tasks which require quantitative reasoning skills. The abstract reads as follows: Language models have achieved remarkable performance on a wide range of tasks that require natural language understanding. Nevertheless, state-of-the-art models have generally struggled with tasks that require quantitative reasoning, such as solving mathematics, science, and engineering problems at the college level. To help close this gap, we introduce Minerva , a large language model pretrained on general natural language data and further trained on technical content. The model achieves state-of-the-art performance on technical benchmarks without the use of external tools. We also evaluate our model on over two hundred undergraduate-level problems in physics, biology, chemistry, economics, and other sciences that require quantitative reasoning, and find that the model can correctly answer nearly a third of them. Some of the results are quite relevant to forecasting AI progress. From @bneyshabur: Recently @JacobSteinhardt (whose group created MATH dataset) published the result of a project where commissioned professional forecasters predicted (at 2021) that 15% acc on MATH will be achieved in 2022 and 50% would be achieved by 2025. ....Steinhardt wrote: "If I imagine an ML system getting more than half of these questions right, I would be pretty impressed.” indeed gets more than half the MATH dataset questions right Some further information (excerpted from across the paper): Minerva is based on the PaLM general language models that are further trained on... the arXiv preprint server and from web pages that we carefully process to minimise the loss of mathematical content. The main novelty of this paper is a large training dataset that juxtaposes natural language with the correct use of formal mathematical language, such as equations and diagrams. ...We evaluated Minerva 62B on the National Math Exam in Poland and found that it achieves a score of 57%, which happened to be the national average in 2021 (CKE, 2021, p. 23). The 540B model achieves 65%. the prevailing errors of the 8B model were related to incorrect reasoning or calculations. Many of the calculation errors were relatively benign arithmetic mistakes. Solutions that were too short were relatively rare (in these cases, the model immediately produces an incorrect answer without any intermediate reasoning steps). Finally, in a few cases, the model hallucinates an equation or mathematical fact that is not real. When examining model solutions, we find that memorization of intermediate facts, such as numerical values of square roots or trigonometric identities, are crucial elements of model solutions. Truly strong performance would combine recall of intermediate facts with genuine solution synthesis...Overall, we find little evidence that the model's performance can be attributed to memorization. Limitations: First, we have no automatic way of verifying the correctness of the model's answers. This is in contrast to formal approaches, for which automatic verification is intrinsic. Second, our model has no access to external tools such as a calculator or a Python interpreter. [!!!] It is therefore limited in its ability to perform quantitative reasoning tasks that require complicated numerical calculations. ...The model's performance is still well below human performance, and furthermore, we do not have an automatic way of verifying the correctness of its outputs. If these issues could be solved, we expect the impacts of this model to be broadly positive. A direct application could be an acces...

Last week, on In the Kitchen with Bret Thorn, Thorn spoke with celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito and the team went into what it means to be a celebrity chef and how it impacts your restaurant and your world. The team also discussed Panera’s new prototype in Chicago that’s to-go only. The fast-casual restaurant known for soups and salads and a more sit-down friendly atmosphere is following the trends and where its consumers are – 80% of the chain’s orders in 2021 were made through off-premises channels. Also, the team talked about Chipotle’s new walk-up windows. The chain is creating “human lanes” instead of drive-thru lanes in urban environments where drive-thru lanes are not possible. The team, mostly based in urban areas, discussed how they like the idea. Finally, the team discussed the new addition to the Wendyverse, Sunrise City. The new element in the metaverse for the quick-service chain allows the user to play games based on the breakfast daypart. The team discussed how Wendy’s is far ahead of other companies when it comes to the metaverse. This week’s guest is Owen Klein, head of menu development for CKE, parent to Carl’s Jr and Hardee’s, who spoke with Thorn about menu development for the chains’ new Jurassic Park-themed menus.

This week on the Extra Serving podcast, a product of Nation’s Restaurant News, NRN editors Holly Petre, Sam Oches, Leigh Anne Zinsmeister and Bret Thorn spoke about the upcoming CKE rebranding efforts, which will cost half a billion dollars. CKE Restaurants — parent to the Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s quick-service chains — earlier this week announced a $500 million rebranding that will focus on the exterior of its restaurants, because most customers are interacting with the brand via the exterior and not the interior. Stay tuned to the Extra Serving feed in the next few weeks to hear an exclusive interview with Owen Klein, the vice president of global culinary innovation for CKE. Also, the team discussed the week in restaurant earnings. There were fewer earnings reports than last week, but it was still jam-packed with financials from fast-casual companies like Shake Shack and Sweetgreen and full-service brands like First Watch and Texas Roadhouse. First Watch, as Zinsmeister pointed out on the podcast, was one of the only chains in 2021 not to increase menu prices. It did increased menu prices early in 2022, which is paying off as same-store sales soared in Q1. Zinsmeister also gives a recap of her recent trip to Baton Rouge, La., where she spent 24 hours fully immersed in quick-service Raising Cane’s unique culture. Lastly, this week’s interview is Felton Jones, the head roaster of PJ's Coffee. Thorn and Jones spoke about the intricacies of coffee and the chain’s newest flavor, Wedding Cake.

That's the kind of tech incorporation that we need to be thinking of to become technology evangelists and to have that competitive edge in our industry.”Click here for more recovery and relief information for restaurant, hospitality and food service operators.
