Conversation Takeaways Co-teaching involves working collaboratively with another teacher or instructional coach to create dynamic and effective lessons. Successful co-teaching partnerships require planning, communication, and the establishment of essential agreements. Co-teaching can benefit both teachers and students by providing opportunities for professional growth, shared expertise, and differentiated instruction. Technology tools such as learning management systems and digital whiteboards can support co-teaching practices. Administrators play a crucial role in supporting and facilitating co-teaching initiatives in schools. Tips for Effective Co-Teaching: Regular Planning: Allocate time for regular planning and reflection to ensure lessons are cohesive and both teachers are on the same page. Clear Communication: Establish open lines of communication. Discuss roles, responsibilities, and expectations clearly to avoid misunderstandings. Mutual Respect and Trust: Build a strong professional relationship based on mutual respect and trust. This helps in managing the classroom effectively and in supporting each other's teaching style. Flexibility: Be open to switching roles and trying different co-teaching models to see what works best for your classroom. Focus on Student Needs: Always keep the needs of the students at the forefront. Adjust your approach based on what will best support their learning. By choosing the right co-teaching model and implementing it effectively, educators can create a dynamic and inclusive classroom environment that benefits all students. Co-teaching in a preschool setting is not a common configuration, but one that is extremely powerful when attempting to meet the needs of a classroom that spans many ages and developmental needs. As there has been a push toward serving young children with disabilities in typical early learning environments, rather than special education classrooms, co-teaching has become an increasingly important strategy for ensuring a full continuum of services for preschoolers with disabilities. Today, we're thrilled to speak with two educators in Barberton City Schools about how to make co-teaching magic in early childhood: Sheila McGhee, Barberton Preschool Director, and Raetina Giovanini, Barberton Preschool Intervention Specialist. Co-Hosts: Mike Kaschak and Tracy Mail, SST8 Educational Consultants
In this episode we meet Jamie Lormeau, former building principal with Cloverleaf Local Schools in Medina. She shares her personal experience with us and a principal's "recipe" for successfully implementing co-teaching as a building leader. Many of the "ingredients" she shares will sound familiar to those who are familiar with the work of Gately and Gately. With any great recipe not only are the ingredients important but how you prepare the recipe is important too. Jamie shares with us the structures and the systemic pieces needed for a successful co-teaching implementation as well. Co-Hosts: Tracy Mail and Mike Kaschak, SST8 Educational Consultants
In this episode we meet Amber Smith & Paula Funfgeld - a co-teaching team at Cloverleaf Elementary School in Medina County. They are joined by building principal Karen Martin. This team, and their fearless leader, share with our listeners their journey in co-teaching, and how they leverage each others' strengths. One of the best compliments to co-teachers is when a classroom visitor can't tell who is the general educator and who is the special educator, because this shows a true integration of their roles. Paula and Amber are a great example of this! Co-Hosts: Mike Kaschak and Tracy Mail, SST8 Educational Consultants
Medina High School's award-winning co-teaching team has been recognized by the district for the great work they are doing. Anne Fortney and Kelly Miller are the the two stars of the this dynamic duo, sometimes referred to by their colleagues as the Wonder Twins. They share with us what their superpowers look like in the co-taught classroom. They are joined by Ronda French, Medina City Schools' Assistant Director of Pupil Services and Katie Hartung Coordinator of Special Education. SST8 Co-Hosts: Mike Kaschak and Tracy Mail, Educational Consultants
We are continuing to capture the ups, downs, ins, and outs of co-teaching… and we're back today with two co-teaching teams from Wadsworth High School, “living the co-teaching dream” as our co-host Tracy Mail says, to support math and science. This week's episode really highlights the alchemy of co-teaching. Personality dynamics, curriculum, student needs, and educator skills and preferences all have to come together to make something almost magical. And despite how challenging that sounds to come together, one of the Wadsworth co-teaching pairs has been a team for over 40 years - how is that even possible? Take a listen and find out. Co-Hosts: Tracy Mail and Mike Kaschak, Educational Consultants
Erica shares her journey from being a high school biology teacher to becoming a chief academic officer and eventually transitioning into entrepreneurship. During our conversation, she talked about her new book titled "Teaching in InSync." She challenges the common analogy of co-teaching being like marriage and introduces a new framework called "Insync".This framework focuses on identity, interaction, shared plans, yielding results, investment, and collaboration and can be applied to co-teaching and working with paraprofessionals. Listeners will learn about the pre-order bonus, and upcoming book study included with the book purchase. In this conversation, we explore strategies for effective co-teaching and rethink the concept of collaboration in the classroom.
Co-teachers Kyanne Obrock and Carrie McSwain share how they saw a significant increase in student effort and motivation when they started designing lessons that shifted from planning for individual students to planning for learner variability. They created a learning environment where students worked individually, in groups, and checked-in at prescribed time so they could receive individualized feedback.
Welcome to the 9th season of the 8 with 8 podcast: The Co-Teaching Chronicles. The big idea behind co-teaching is that when general and special educators pair up to co-plan, co-instruct, and co-assess their students, it should provide instruction and support that is substantively better than what each teacher could provide on their own. But, like many collaborative endeavors, co-teaching is HARD to do well. So SST8 has been working like crazy over the last two years to create a range of supports for co-teachers in our region. In doing so, we have met dozens of teachers and leaders throughout our region with inspiring stories and unique angles on the art and science of co-teaching. In this season of 8 with 8, you'll hear from teachers in a variety of settings and circumstances - from traditional districts to community schools to career centers - and across all grade levels. Regardless of what role and position in education YOU listen from, we're confident that this season will bring you stories that ring true and ideas that will inspire. So get ready for a new season of 8 with 8 - The Co-Teaching Chronicles - coming to Anchor and all other podcast platforms on Friday, December 1. See you soon! A meta-analysis of co-teaching showed that it benefits students to have more than one adult in the classroom, regardless of the specifics. We reflect on what it could mean to successfully build a co-teaching classroom based on trust among the teachers and students. Later, we read another meta-analysis that is sharply critical of the current research on growth mindset. We consider what their critiques mean for our past support of growth mindset research and what elements of growth mindset we want to keep (for now).
Co-Teaching is a well known term in the special education world. It happens when two teachers are in the same classroom, one general ed and one special ed teacher, working with students with disabilities and students without. There are 6 different methods of co-teaching, all of them work in different situations. Finding what works can be daunting, but allowing students to learn in the least restrictive environment is what is best for everyone. In this week's episode we have Meredith from Meredith Mitchell Methods sharing all things collaboration and co-teaching. She is sharing tips and strategies on how to make almost any co-teaching situation work. In this episode you will learn: The benefits of co-teaching for your students. The 6 different methods of co-teaching. How to work with your co-teacher instead of separately. Where to find resources that will make things smoother. Working with our students in the least restrictive environment, allowing them to learn there, should be the goal for us all. Co-teaching allows for those moments to happen. Co-teaching in a special education setting is a collaborative approach to teaching where a general education teacher and a special education teacher work together to plan and instruct a class that includes students with disabilities. This typically takes place in the general education classroom with regular peers. "I'm The Best There Is At What I Do:” This statement while being a catchphrase of X-Men's Wolverine, might also be the mantra many of us general classroom teachers subconsciously bring into our spaces. The GLG has you covered by bringing you a two-parter that balances both the light and the dark in co-teaching.
