What's up, dudes? “Gremlins” is a classic holiday horror, and I've got artist and author of the Banned Book Club series Ryan Estrada here to talk about! Yes, we really get into the “Gremlins” original script by Chris Columbus and its novelization by George Gipe!In the original script, Billy is fantasy author and sticks up for himself much more. Of course, the gremlins themselves are also more vicious. Gone is the good mogwai character of Gizmo. In fact, they kill and eat the dog, decapitate Billy's mom, and eat some McDonald's customers (rather than the food). Thankfully, Joe Dante lightened the tone and brought in some humor. In contrast to the mysterious thriller of Columbus, Gipe expands the backstory of the creatures. In his origin, the mogwai were genetically engineered by an alien named Mogturmen to be gifts and peace offerings to neighboring worlds. Unfortunately, he miscalculated, and the gifts turned out to be mischievous and murderous pests. Can't win ‘em all, I guess.Medieval sword replica? Check. Alien geneticist? Yup. Gremlin in a toolbox thrown into a lake? Only if you want to setup a sequel! So grab your sword, save your crush, and kill some little green monsters to this episode on the “Gremlins” original script and novelization!RyanEstrada.comIG: @ryaneatradadotcomFB: @RyanEstradaGive us a buzz! We're back from our holiday break and things are… weird. Right? It's weird and scary to be here again, with Trump about to step into the office of President. It's like some terrible episode of The Twilight Zone.If we're going to get through the next four years, we need to take care of ourselves, plug into our local communities and above all, find ways to stay resilient. And luckily, this week we're joined by Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, a suburban mom whose resilience we can all look up to.Her father was an Ojibwe activist, and if anyone knows how to keep fighting in the face of overwhelming odds, it's an indigenous elder. Lt. Gov. Flanagan shared his wisdom about not giving up our power in advance and remembering to find the joy in our lives. It's ok to be afraid — how could we not be? — but if we take care of ourselves and drown out the political noise, there is still so much good work we can do.Even if she didn't get to be the first Native American woman to serve as governor, Peggy Flanagan is certain that whoever that woman will be, she's already on her way. There is plenty of light in the darkness if we just keep looking for it. We're more resilient than we might think. If you're interested in joining Red Wine & Blue's "Banned Book Club," next week we're reading Timothy Snyder's "On Tyranny." Oh my! It's a fascinating look into true events!Kim Hyun Sook is in college, and she's being eyed as the new leader of the Banned Book Club. To top it off, it's Christmas Eve, so traditionally this is when the Dance Club heads up the mountain to par-tay! Speaking to the true story that inspired both books, Hyun Sook said, “Banned Book Club is a story about the harsh realities we faced while living under a dictator. But at the time, we did not think about ourselves as living in a dystopia. We dealt with many problems and tried to make the world a better place, but we were still living our lives, making friends, falling in love, and having fun. I wanted to make a book about finding the joy in life when the world doesn't seem to want you to be happy. About discovering yourself in a world that seems hostile toward your very existence. Banned Book Club was about the sacrifices we made, the truths we hid, and the dangers we endured. I want readers of ‘No Rules Tonight' to understand that the most important step to make the world a better place isto be your true, authentic self.”Give us a buzz! Each story is inspired by my own travels, but turned into an action-adventure comedy! Readers can solve the mystery along with the character using real fun facts about the world. The Missing Dragon covers a kidnapping in Korea and Japan, while The Silver City is a monster mystery in the mines of Mexico. Both feature amazing art by the great Axur Eneas!Ryan Estrada is an artist, author, and adventurer. His books include Banned Book Club, Occulted, No Rules Tonight, and the Student Ambassador series. He has worked for Star Trek, Popeye, Flash Gordon, and Garfield. He was a gator wrangler in America, an ambassador to Australia, an undocumented animator in Canada, a ghostbuster in South Korea, a Bollywood voiceover actor in India, wandered Kim Jong Il's secret tunnels to North Korea, slept on a bench in a typhoon in Japan, dug toilets in Thailand, did an accidental illegal border crossing into Burma, made road comics in Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Vietnam and The Philippines, documentaries in Colombia and Ecuador, and podcasts in Malaysia, ran with the bulls in Mexico, barely escaped being eaten by lions in Kenya, fainted atop Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, got caught in a Peruvian coca war, lived in a Costa Rican rainforest and a Panamanian volcano.RANDOM FACTS-Ryan started pitching comics to newspapers when he was six. He bothered the same newspaper until they finally hired him at age sixteen.-Ryan accidentally invented the word normcore. He'd been the official cartoonist of LiveJournal before Putin had the company bought out so he could move the servers in Russia and use them to shut down activists. He forgot that Ryan still had the legal and technological ability to make comics about their mascot speaking out against this and post them to the official site.-Ryan does free virtual workshops and author visits for any school, library or book club that asks! A Lasting Passage: Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square. Somehow, it was hotter then: a Black dog suffered on a summer's day; bony mules hitched to Hoover carts flicked flies in the sweltering shade of the live oaks on the square. Men's stiff collars wilted by nine in the morning. Ladies bathed before noon, after their three-o'clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum.People moved slowly then. They ambled across the square, shuffled in and out of the stores around it, took their time about everything. A day was twenty-four hours long but seemed longer. There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb County. On this week's Out d'Coup LIVE we bring you a pre-recorded interview with Joslyn Diffenbaugh. Joslyn is a 10th grade student at Kutztown Area High School. She is the founder of the Teen Banned Books club and an outspoken student advocate against book bans in her school district and school districts all around the region. This past spring, the Kutztown Area School District school board canceled a grant-funded, "One School, One Book," program that planned to read Alan Gratz's new book, Two Degrees. The reason? Because a few outspoken conservative parents didn't want students reading about climate change! We had Alan Gratz on this program to talk about the controversy and Joslyn had an opportunity to interview him at the Firefly Bookstore during his visit to Kutztown University for last year's Children's Literature Conference.  This interview was conducted on October 1, 2023 as a featured event during the PA Climate Convergence in Harrsiburg. Joslyn was supposed to interview Alan Gratz, but Alan unfortunately got COVID just a few days before the event. Karen Feridun from the PA Climate Convergence asked if I would be willing to step in and interview Joslyn. I was more than happy to step up. This week, we're celebrating libraries! Not only do librarians help kids (and adults) find the books they need, libraries are a vital “third space” in our communities. They provide resources and information, they promote inclusivity, and they're a place where we can spend time with one another. Our hosts are joined by Carrie Wardzinski, a librarian and mom in Pennsylvania, who shares why she was drawn to the profession and what we can do to support our local libraries. After that, Jasmine gets the chance to sit down with amazing best-selling author Jodi Picoult. Many of Jodi's books are facing bans around the country, so she and Jasmine chat about why book bans are so dangerous and what's really behind them. Jodi also shares where she gets the ideas for her novels and why she thinks fiction is such a valuable way to tackle big issues like abortion, school shootings, and trans rights. Finally, Amanda, Rachel and Jasmine raise a glass to powerful stories, family hikes, and new experiences in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”Speaking of banned books, next month's Banned Book Club is all about Jonathan Evison's book Lawn Boy - one of the most commonly banned books in the country. We'd love for you to join us on June 7th at 7:30pm Eastern for this free virtual event. Today Jo Carducci is filling in for Rachel Vindman. In this episode, Jo, Jasmine, and Amanda chat about how right-wing extremists are trying to distract us and exhaust us. Whether it's refusing to focus on anything but the trans identity of the recent school shooter in Nashville, or pretending that a children's book about Rosa Parks is “pushing Critical Race Theory on kids,” we can't let our focus waver from the things that really matter: standing up for equity in our schools and communities. This week, we hear from Revida Rahman, a mom in Tennessee who co-founded OneWillCo, an organization that supports students of color. Revida shares some of the troubling racial incidents that led her and her friend Jen to found their organization, why book bans are so dangerous, and what white parents can do to stand up for racial equity in their school systems. And after that, Jasmine gets the chance to talk to Angie Thomas, the award-winning author of books like “The Hate U Give” and “Concrete Rose.” Angie chats about writing a novel about Black Lives Matter from the perspective of a teenage girl, and how she wanted to approach writing the book not just from anger, but also from love. We're very excited about her new book for middle-grade readers, “Nic Blake and the Remarkables: The Manifestor Prophecy.” It's so important not for young girls of color and for everyone to see some Black Girl Magic. Finally, Amanda, Jo and Jasmine raise a glass to awards, historic downtowns, and supportive co-workers in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”If you want to hear more from authors of banned books, you can check out our Banned Book Club events on Instagram Live. And if you aren't able to join us live, you can always watch the interviews later on our YouTube channel. We also carry those banned books in our online bookshop, because one of the best ways you can support authors is to buy their books! For a transcript of this episode, please email theswppod@redwine.blue. Stop Right-Wing Censorship of Library Books

Sometimes, stupid political ideas beget even stupider political tactics. For example, a faction of right-wing Republicans want to stop public discussion and actions involving two ideas they hate: (1) racism always has been and still is a systemic problem in American society; and (2) LGBTQ people are a normal and welcome part of... well, of us – America's richly diverse society. Aside from the raw ignorance behind the GOP's denial of these realities, consider the boneheadedness of their current campaign to impose their bigotry on America: Book banning. At least 50 extremist groups are roaming from city to city, funded by deep pocket right-wingers like the Koch brothers' political network, to demand that books they don't like be removed from schools and libraries. Worse, their open assault on knowledge and our freedom to read includes the nasty tactic of demonizing and threatening librarians who resist their dictates. Librarians! As a group, these truly helpful people are a national treasure, serving the common good – yet they're getting physical threats and being fired by these little right-wing mobs. The good news is that their surreptitious attacks are being exposed, and local folks are rising up against the book banners and partisan thugs spreading their ignorance and usurping people's freedom to learn. For example, when two high school girls in Leander, Texas, asked to check out a few books from their library, they were stunned to learn that the school district had banned all the titles they requested. Students had not been informed of this censorship much less consulted. Rather than whine, the two feisty girls organized the Banned Book Club in their school, reading “prohibited” titles as a group, then meeting twice a month to discuss the books, including the ban. This is Jim Hightower saying... To get more information and to fight this right-wing repression, contact American Library Association: ala.org.
