Malcolm Gladwell may be one of the most widely read—and, with his Revisionist History podcast, listened to—journalists of our time. A New Yorker magazine staff writer and the author of seven New York Times bestsellers, including The Tipping Point (2000), Blink (2005), and Outliers (2008), he has myriad awards and honors to his name. But this impressive trajectory has never been some planned-out or preordained journey; in fact, as Gladwell says on this episode of Time Sensitive, he has never been one to try to overly plan for or divine the future—of his career, of his life, or of anything, really. “Expectations are a burden and wherever possible should be abandoned,” he says. Gladwell's radical receptiveness is perhaps what has led him to become one of today's most prolific and eclectic writers, reporting on topics ranging from office design and french fries, to dog fighting and Steve Jobs, to automobile engineers and marijuana. Across all of his writing, Gladwell exhibits a rare sleight-of-hand ability to take certain intellectual or academic subjects and leap-frog them into popular culture, and, in doing so, make seemingly esoteric phenomena entertaining and widely accessible. On the episode—recorded in the Pushkin Industries outpost in Hudson, New York—Gladwell talks about the disappearance of what he calls “the critical enterprise in America”; and how A.I. is complicating his famous “10,000-Hour Rule.”Special thanks to our Season 10 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Malcolm Gladwell[4:36] Revenge of the Tipping Point[5:06] The Tipping Point[13:43] Unsafe at Any Speed[22:52] Anand Giridharadas[24:00] Revisionist History[25:39] Blink[31:07] The Holocaust in American Life[43:16] “10,000-Hour Rule”[43:16] Outliers[56:06] The Bomber Mafia (Podcast Mini Series)[56:06] Pushkin Industries[59:56] John Grisham[1:06:56] The Bomber Mafia (Book)
Send us a textMuch of what we understand about global trends is filtered through the lens of the United States. What happens there often shapes thought, culture, and society worldwide. And when it comes to shaping thought, few have had the impact of my guest today: Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell, the bestselling author of *The Tipping Point*, *Blink*, and *Outliers* joins me to discuss his new book, *Revenge of the Tipping Point*. This latest work re-examines the ideas that made him famous—sometimes expanding on them, sometimes rejecting them outright. We delve into the *Broken Windows* theory, one of the concepts at the heart of *The Tipping Point*. It famously inspired crime-prevention policies in New York City, but also led to the controversial practice of stop-and-frisk. Just last month, Gladwell publicly apologised for his role in promoting these ideas, and today, we unpack that apology and the lessons learned. In *Revenge of the Tipping Point*, Gladwell takes a hard look at the dark undercurrents of societal change. It's a fascinating conversation about the power of ideas, their unintended consequences, and how they continue to shape the world. Let's go.ABOUT MALCOLM GLADWELLMalcolm Gladwell is the author of seven New York Times bestsellers: The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, What the Dog Saw, David and Goliath, Talking to Strangers, and The Bomber Mafia. He is also the co-founder of Pushkin Industries, an audio content company that produces the podcasts Revisionist History, which reconsiders things both overlooked and misunderstood, and Broken Record, where he, Rick Rubin, and Bruce Headlam interview musicians across a wide range of genres. Gladwell has been included in the Time 100 Most Influential People list and touted as one of Foreign Policy's Top Global Thinkers. Previously, he was a staff writer for The New Yorker. We have a legend on I'd Rather Be Reading today, friends. None other than Malcolm Gladwell is here to talk about his latest book, Revenge of the Tipping Point: Overstories, Superspreaders, and the Rise of Social Engineering, which is out October 1. Revenge of the Tipping Point comes nearly 25 years after Malcolm's 2000 book The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, a bestseller that took his career to the next level and ushered in a new genre of books. Today on the show we talk to Malcolm about what made him want to return to the concept of The Tipping Point and if there was unfinished business there; what a tipping point is, exactly; and how, as he writes in Revenge of the Tipping Point, “the very same tools we use to build a better world can also be used against us.” As he puts it, Revenge of the Tipping Point is a study of the underside of possibilities he explored a quarter century ago. We talk about social engineering, social epidemics, monocultures, overstories, his process, and how we can use tools necessary to control an epidemic to build a better world. So much here, and I'm excited to dig into all of it with you listeners today. Malcolm Gladwell is someone I've mentioned on the show before — I've read all of his books, and I'm a big fan. He is a journalist, author, and public speaker who has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1996. In addition to publishing seven New York Times bestselling books (and I have no doubt his latest, his eighth, will become a bestseller, too), he is a podcaster — his show “Revisionist History” is a must-listen. His work is in the realm of sociology and psychology, social sciences, and after the success of The Tipping Point in 2000, books like Blink, Outliers, What the Dog Saw, David and Goliath, Talking to Strangers, and The Bomber Mafia followed. His books are massive bestsellers, he's one of the forefront thinkers of our time, and has even been named one of TIME's 100 most influential people. Revenge of the Tipping Point marks Malcolm's eighth book, and I'm thrilled to chat with him about it today. I also want to throw this in here for good measure — he has a cat named Biggie Smalls, so that's absolutely amazing. Take a listen. Revenge of the Tipping Point: Overstories, Superspreaders, and the Rise of Social Engineering by Malcolm Gladwell
Next week, Malcolm Gladwell will be on the show to discuss his new book "Revenge of the Tipping Point: Overstories, Superspreaders, and the Rise of Social Engineering." In anticipation of that conversation, we're revisiting our 2021 interview with Malcolm about "The Bomber Mafia" — the story of a group of pilots who met on a muggy airbase in central Alabama and hatched a plan to revolutionize warfare.
In this latest episode of the Anatomy of Leadership podcast, David Levy, Professor of Management at the United States Air Force Academy, explores the concept of leadership and the importance of every interaction as an opportunity. The dialogue delves into an array of intriguing subjects such as the Air Force Academy's unique design, the “Masters of the Air” series, and Malcolm Gladwell's book, The Bomber Mafia. David Levy also discusses the importance of belonging, agency, and efficacy in leadership and how these concepts can contribute to the well-being of individuals and organizations. The conversation explores the importance of competence and context in performance, as well as the critical need for belonging in organizations. It introduces the concept of the Lens X, which consists of the needs of belonging, agency, and efficacy, and the narratives that shape our experiences. David emphasizes the power of micro exchanges in tending the garden of belonging, agency, and efficacy, and highlights the importance of framing and reframing our narratives. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the relevance of these concepts in various contexts, including the military, healthcare, and personal relationships.Guest -David Levy, Professor of Management at the United States Air Force AcademyHost -Chris Comeaux, President / CEO of Teleios Collaborative Network and Teleios Consulting Grouphttps://www.teleioscn.org/anatomy-of-leadership/caring-for-others-with-david-levy-every-interaction-is-an-opportunity
The renegade WW2 pilots who tried to end war as we know it ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Much has been written about World War II in the seven and a half decades since it ended in 1945. But as writer Malcolm Gladwell shows with his new book "The Bomber Mafia," some incredible stories and perspectives have been largely forgotten. A group of pilots, led by Brigadier General Haywood Hansell, earned the derogatory nickname Bomber Mafia because of a not-widely-shared dream that they could use a few strategic bombings to lower the death toll and have a "clean" war. "But that's not what war ever is," says Gladwell. "It never has that kind of fairy tale ending." A few failed attempts led to a changing of the guard, the invention of napalm, and a summer of attacks on Japanese cities that Gladwell says was at "a scale of destruction almost unmatched in human history." ----------------------------------------------------------------- MALCOLM GLADWELL: Malcolm Gladwell is bestselling author and host of the Revisionist History podcast. His latest book, “The Bomber Mafia: A Dream, a Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War” tells the story of a group of pilots with an idea that, had it succeeded, would have reinvented warfare as we know it Read Malcolm Gladwell's newest book "The Bomber Mafia: A Dream, a Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War" at https://amzn.to/3gUrhmf ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRANSCRIPT: MALCOLM GLADWELL: Anyone who came home from the trenches of World War I came home permanently traumatized. The war was mindlessly brutal. There were battles in the First World War where hundreds of thousands of people, there was a battle in the First World War where a million men died. That experience could not be repeated. On the eve of the Second World War, there's a remarkable group of pilots who thought they could reinvent warfare and make war a more humane exercise, a kind of clean war. But that's not what war ever is. It never has that kind of fairytale ending. My name is Malcolm Gladwell. I am a writer, host of the podcast "Revisionist History," and the author of the new book "The Bomber Mafia." The story of the Bomber Mafia begins with a group of renegade pilots in central Alabama in the 1930s. They have become convinced that new technology, this new class of bombers, can make it possible to conduct a war where only a handful of people were killed. This is something that no one else in the military thought was even a remotely good idea. The term, "the Bomber Mafia," was not intended to be a compliment. They would always joke that if the people back in Washington knew what they were doing, they would all be fired. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Last summer, Cardiff interviewed Malcolm Gladwell for another podcast that he hosts called The Next Chapter, by American Express Business Class. On that show, Cardiff interviews bestselling book authors (like Gladwell) to find out what they've been up to since their earlier book was published, and to learn what they would add to it now that some time has passed—hence the “Next Chapter” of the title. And in the case of Gladwell, what he's been up to in the last few years is podcasting. Specifically, he co-founded Pushkin Industries, a podcast production company for which he hosts his own excellent show, called Revisionist History, and has written an audiobook, The Bomber Mafia. As it happens, Gladwell and Cardiff have the same favorite dead economist, Albert O Hirschman. And since Hirschman comes up a few times in their chat, and because the chat also covers a number of fascinating economic themes generally, it's the perfect episode to also air on The New Bazaar. The chat was recorded at Gladwell's offices in Hudson, New York, last year. And if you like the episode and want to hear more of these interviews, please consider subscribing to The Next Chapter on your podcast app of choice. There you'll find other interviews hosted by Cardiff with guests like Adam Grant on how to think creatively; David Epstein on why it's good to be a generalist; Susan Cain on introversion; and Mashama Bailey and John O Morisano on entrepreneurship and partnership in business. I have mentioned before, I am a fan of Malcolm Gladwell and his podcast "Revisionist History". His last book "The Bomber Mafia" was about the race to use strategic bombing to end World War II. This was before the "Manhattan Project" which yielded the first atomic bomb that was built and used to change the course of history. The book discusses the desire to "Drop a bomb in a pickle barrel" with precision targeting. The problem was its theory was not practical with weather, and other factors. The only thing that worked was using napalm to firebomb Tokyo at low altitudes, and then drop the two BIG ones! You may or may not view business marketing as a war, but it does have a lot in common. It takes strategy, research, and recognizance missions to identify targets. It demands clear vision and boots-on-the-ground intelligence to get to the right person, with the right message, at the right time. We have weapons that act like laser-guided knowledge bombs or weapons of mass distraction. Your marketing content is the ammunition you need to convert business intelligence into sales. You can actively create content that targets the wants, needs, and desires of your budding relationships. Social media is forever changing. It gets noisy out there. B2b marketing is different from business-to-consumer marketing. Relationships and data should be at the forefront of your efforts. "The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting." - Sun Tzu In this episode, we will discuss how your content is like Knowledge Bombs... How they land depends on how you aim them. He is the co-founder and president of Pushkin Industries, an audiobook and podcast production company that produces the podcasts Revisionist History, Against the Rules with Michael Lewis, The Happiness Lab with Dr. Laurie Santos, and Broken Record.Guild CEO Rachel Romer and best-selling author Adam Grant speak to Malcolm Gladwell on the importance of reinventing oneself later in life, the impact of logistical challenges on the economy and education, the inefficiency in identifying talent, career uncertainty, and occupational identity.Key takeaways from our conversation with Malcolm:Reinvention and career exploration is key: Malcolm Gladwell discusses how his mother's successful career change later in life inspired him to think about the power of reinvention. He raises the question of whether people need permission to have openness about reinventing themselves instead of staying stuck in their current course. There is a huge significance in encouraging individuals to explore different career paths and embrace the possibility of change throughout their lives. There is an inefficiency in identifying talent: Gladwell highlights the concept of capitalization, which refers to the percentage of people with a given ability who are actually able to use it. He says society often fails to efficiently identify talent, with the availability of teachers and mentors being a limiting factor in developing skills. Talent exists everywhere, but it requires a serious effort to find and cultivate it, emphasizing the need for accessible opportunities and supportive environments to nurture potential.Addressing occupational identity and access: Rachel Romer shares her perspective on the importance of occupational identity and access to diverse professions. She discusses how privileged students have more freedom to explore their options, while others are expected to declare a major early on. A mindset shift that encourages a career-first conversation is key and allows individuals to explore their occupational identity before committing to a specific major. Join us for a provocative conversation that will expand your knowledge on the topics of investing in young talent, developing a wide range of skills, and employee recruitment and retention. Very often, our minds are actively focused on different things—events that have already happened, have yet to happen, or something we judge as either positive or negative. We rarely find our minds neutral, and that, in turn, affects how we interact in the present. A neutral mind leaves us fully in the moment, allowing us to accept what is, not wishing it were something else. Presence enables the mind to focus on what we can control. Our guest today is going to help you and your team find neutrality so that you can achieve your personal and professional goals. Josh Lifrak has been in the coaching field for 18 years. He has worked with elite athletes and corporate leaders in achieving peak performance and contributed to optimizing many organizational cultures for growth. He is the current Director of Performance and Coaching for Limitless Minds, a health and wellness technology company founded by Denver Broncos quarterback, Russell Wilson and the acclaimed Trevor Moawad, the author of “It Takes What It Takes.” Josh is also the president of Lift-Up Consulting from 2014 to 2019 and has worked in Major League Baseball with the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, helping both teams with mental performance—even helping the Cubs win a World Series. Today's episode delves into the importance of a neutral mind and understanding our internal narratives, providing strategies and habits used by elite athletes to excel. Join us! Key Points: The importance of having a neutral mind There is no single factor that yields good performance. It is the accumulation of several things that you can notice by building self-awareness. Achieving a neutral mind through (1) distancing yourself from what is occurring, and (2) noticing your behavior, what contributed to it, and the things you are grateful for Episode Highlights [00:00] Introduction to the episode [05:02] Josh's work with Limited Minds and the power of a neutral mind [08:46] Why Josh got into sports psychology and why he decided to leave it [15:52] What drove Josh in his previous and current work [21:39] What contributes to high performance in both sports and business? Overview of “Outliers: The Story of Success” A very brief description of “Outliers”Journalist and researcher Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers" - the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful - from software billionaires to soccer players to Asian math prodigies. His goal is to find the answer to the question: What makes high-achievers different from regular people? What Gladwell sets out to do / Purpose of the bookThe real meat of the book is Gladwell's discussion of our misunderstanding of how highly successful people achieve their greatness. The modern media pays too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. The intended audience of the book / Who will benefit mostPeople who love biographiesPeople who want to understand how to become successfulPeople who want to know that unspoken truth about great success - that it often requires great luck as well as great workPeople who want to become world famousPeople who like reality TV shows Who probably WON'T like this book?People who need deep, scientific analyses of case studiesPeople who believe in overnight successPeople who aren't willing to commit 10,000 hours to their thingHow does this book specifically benefit Men? All Men aspire to greatness but most men do not understand everything that is required to achieve it. Outliers will help to fill in the gaps in a man's education so he can realize the skills, the work, the creativity - and the serendipity that is required to rise to the highest level of achievement. Is this book Easy, Average or Difficult to read? / How long is it? The book is easy reading although it may be difficult to accept how much work is required to achieve greatness336 pages, Audiobook is 7 hours and 18 minutesWhat are the overall book reviews? His mother is Joyce Gladwell, a Jamaican psychotherapist. His father, Graham Gladwell, was a mathematics professor from Kent, England. When he was six his family moved from Southampton to the Mennonite community of Elmira in Ontario, Canada.Gladwell's father noted Malcolm was an unusually single-minded and ambitious boy. When Malcolm was 11, his father, who was a professor of mathematics and engineering at the University of Waterloo, allowed him to wander around the offices at his university, which stoked the boy's interest in reading and libraries. The University of Waterloo granted Gladwell an honorary doctorate in 2007.He graduated with a bachelor's degree in history from Trinity College of the University of Toronto, in 1984 but although he wanted to attend graduate school his grades weren't high enough so he decided to pursue advertising. After being rejected by every advertising agency he applied to, he accepted a journalism position at American Spectator and has spent almost 40 years to date writing and working in investigative journalismGladwell was a national class runner and an Ontario High School champion. He was among Canada's fastest teenagers at 1500 meters, running 4:14 at the age of 13 and 4:05 when aged 14. In 2014 he ran a 4:54 mile - when he was 51 years old!He has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1996. He has published five NYT bestsellers (and seven books overall): The Tipping Point (2000); Blink (2005); Outliers (2008); What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures (2009); David and Goliath (2013); Talking To Strangers (2019) and The Bomber Mafia (2021). Breakdown of Themes in "Outliers" Our culture celebrates the myth of the “self-made man.”Once you reach a certain threshold, increased abilities no longer help you succeed. World-class mastery of anything demands around 10,000 hours of practice – no easy feat. The month you're born in can have a huge effect on what you achieve. How you're brought up can radically impact how successful you become. The year you're born in can make or break you.

Are they truly self-made or are they a product of their circumstances, families and external environment? Is success a product of innate talent, preparation, or opportunity? StoryShot #1: Success Isn't LinearSuccess doesn't come from one factor. There is a multitude of things that go into making someone successful. Grit and determination aren't the only factors to consider. Someone's environment or upbringing also doesn't predict success. There's no way for you to predict or guess what may make you successful. Several factors are working in harmony for someone to become successful.Success doesn't just hinge on having one thing that sets you apart from others. It's about having many things that set you apart...
This week we discuss the evolution of air warfare from World War I into World War II through the work of Malcolm Gladwell in his book The Bomber Mafia. One daring group of Air Force personnel attempted to change the strategy of bombing to be more precise and effective while keeping casualties down, but what ended up happening was quite the opposite. The result was one of the most deadly bombing runs in history as well as the two nuclear bombs dropped in Japan. Malcolm Gladwell (@gladwell) has written multiple bestsellers that are probably on your shelf right now, including The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, What the Dog Saw, and Talking to Strangers. His latest book is The Bomber Mafia: A Dream, a Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War. What We Discuss with Malcolm Gladwell: Why you're probably worse at detecting when other people are lying to you than you think you are (but at least it's for a good reason). We judge people's honesty based on their demeanor, but not everyone's behavior matches what is expected of them -- which often leads to false impressions. Why do we trust some institutions and people in authority almost without question, and what happens when that trust is (or is perceived to be) violated? How does Malcolm decide what to explore and study for his next book or podcast, and what happens to the ideas that get discarded along the way? Why Malcolm finds storytelling that assembles an imperfect puzzle more satisfying than a flawless conclusion. And much more... You can hear the excitement in Mike's voice as he welcomes legendary author Malcolm Gladwell, host of Revisionist History & author of Outliers as well as his latest The Bomber Mafia. Malcolm brings Gladwellian theory to why the re-telling of jokes is never as funny. They riff on evil golf courses, evil search engines, & where that YMCA pool smell might actually come from. Even Malcolm's mom Joyce makes a cameo. This may just be the tipping point for Working It Out. https://www.yesscholars.org/

We discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly in Malcolm Gladwell's newest book, The Bomber Mafia. And its mostly bad!
Have you ever noticed that we jump very quickly to the idea that certain foods, movement, and decisions are either "good" or "bad"? And then we get ourselves in a little predicament where we've done everything we're supposed to be doing, but we aren't feeling better? That we maybe did too much, without questioning whether or not we actually felt better? That maybe, just maybe, your health plan shouldn't be defined by what worked for someone else, and instead by what feels and works best for your body? This episode was inspired by Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History's deep dive into the Little Mermaid. Malcolm, if you're wondering, I'm happy to jump on board and discuss how this impacts our health with you. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! Our Ask Me Anything is starting in September. A Thursday short episode answering your hormone, burnout, and health questions. Leave us your question in a review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or the like and we'll pick one a week to answer! Malcom Gladwell says "The Bomber Mafia" marks a departure for him stylistically as a writer as he has never told a story before that was just one narrative with no social science. But there is a common thread across Gladwell's books, which is his fascination with how the human psyche deals with conflict; and this book has that in spades. The Bomber Mafia follows the competition between the two men in “one of the grandest and consequential stages of the Second World War,” Gladwell says hoping the book will invite people to look at how society operates along similar lines of division now.
