In just two weeks, students attending Franklin & Marshall College will be back on campus for the fall semester. F&M President Dr. Barbara Altman says the start of a new academic year is the highlight of her year. “We're expecting a first-year class of about 500, which is pretty much what we planned. I know we might want to talk about the various things going on in higher ed these days, but we're delighted with a very, very talented class of 500”. In addition to serving as President, Dr. Altman is the Board Chair of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (AICUP) of Pennsylvania. AICUP is the only statewide organization that serves exclusively the interests of independent, nonprofit higher education within the Commonwealth and exists to complement and support the work of campus leaders. She also recently led the largest fundraising program in the college's history. “We closed that campaign about two years ago and we came in over about 10% over goal. It takes a long time to do a capital campaign like that. Among our most important priorities was raising money to support financial aid for students. We give very generous aid, and we commit to fully meeting a student's aid for all four years there with us. So that's a big part of our budget”. Dr. Altman has been at F&M since August 2018. She says the location in Lancaster, and the reputation of the college is what led her to Franklin & Marshall. “Being in Lancaster is an unbelievable privilege and advantage for Franklin and Marshall. Many schools like us are located in quite isolated places, but we have this wonderful, vibrant, busy, exciting city to work in and we're an open campus, so our our boundaries just meld right into the neighborhoods around us. Our students volunteer, work for paid, do internships, right in Lancaster City and Lancaster County. We love to bring the community to our facilities, as they just came for the Lancaster International Piano Festival, which was held in our beautiful little jewel of a concert hall. The bars are a concert hall, and we're just so lucky to be in the fabric, right in the fabric of a really happening little city. That is a great place for our students to live and work. I'm happy to say that we have about 1400 Franklin and Marshall grads working in the immediate area. It's our third largest alumni group, actually.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this week's Industrial Hemp Podcast, we talk to the organizers of the Lancaster County Hemp Circuit: Sarah Mitchell, Steve Groff and Alyssa Collins. The circuit, an event centered on growing and processing industrial hemp in Pennsylvania, is scheduled Aug. 20-21. “It's called the circuit because we actually have four different sites and they're all in a radius of Lancaster City,” said Mitchell, hemp specialist at King's Agriseeds, which is hosting the first leg of the circuit at the King's research farm in Christiana on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 9 a.m. “We have 28 varieties to show off from several different continents, all by breeders who are intending to either offer certified seed varieties or are breeding for certified seed varieties,” she said. From the farm in Christiana, the event moves to the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum for an afternoon educational session, including a welcome address from Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding and a history lesson from Pennsylvania hemp historian Les Stark. “We also have six hemp entrepreneurs from Pennsylvania,” Mitchell said, “and these are businesses that are actually generating revenue from hemp. And so these are people who are not just talking about making it happen, but they're actually making it happen.” After the Landis Valley Museum and a dinner break, the circuit continues at Penn State's Southeastern Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Manheim, where Collins, its director, has been overseeing Penn State's hemp research since 2018. The evening portion of the event starts with introductions in the barn. Attendees will then head out to the field to see the variety trials and ask questions, before returning to the barn for more discussion. “This is a great opportunity to meet some of the next generation of hemp scientists, because we're going to have some of the students there to share their work that they've been working on the last couple of years on, specifically hemp disease and hemp processing and insect ecology in hemp,” Collins said. For those traveling from outside the county, Mitchell said a block of rooms is available at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Hotel in Lancaster. The second day of the event takes place from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., entirely at Steve Groff's Cedar Meadow Farm in Holtwood, Lancaster County, where Groff has over 50 acres of fiber hemp in the ground. The day will be full day of expert speakers, educational opportunities and equipment demonstrations from chopping and baling to no-till planting into cover crops. There will also be a soil pit, so attendees can see the difference regenerative hemp farming has on the soil. Groff said he is excited to unveil his four bar hemp cutter, essentially four sickle mowing bars that allow for easier harvesting of tall fiber hemp. “And we'll be able to cut 12 feet hemp into four sections, and make it manageable then to windrow and dry it out,” he said. Lunch will be served both days, but attendees are on their own for dinner. Space is limited, so please register soon. The Fulton Theatre's decision to dissolve its IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) committee has sparked discontent among some of its members. Kareena Rios, a former committee member, shared her insights on the matter during an interview on The Spark. Rios expressed disappointment, suggesting that the committee, tasked with addressing diversity and equity within the theater, was doomed from the start. The dissolution of the committee raises questions about the theater's commitment to inclusivity and representation within its operations. Rios's commentary sheds light on potential shortcomings in the theater's approach to diversity initiatives. The decision to disband the committee comes amid broader conversations about equity and inclusion in the arts and entertainment industry. It underscores the complexities and challenges inherent in implementing meaningful change within institutions. The theater's move has not only disappointed its former committee members but also prompted reflections on the efficacy of diversity initiatives in the entertainment sector. As stakeholders and observers continue to grapple with these issues, the incident at the Fulton Theatre serves as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to foster genuine inclusivity and equity within cultural institutions, and Lancaster City.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 2: While appearing on MSNBC with host Jose Diaz-Balart, former presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke compared Donald Trump's pledge to secure the U.S. Southern border to “something you could have expected from Adolf Hitler in the 1930s”—no wonder Beto lost three elections in a four-year span. On Good Morning America, ABC's unbiased journalist George Stephanopoulos suggested it is a foregone conclusion that the U.S. Supreme Court would rule against Donald Trump and his claim of having presidential immunity from prosecution for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2020 election. Dave McCormick—Republican Candidate for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania & former Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs during the George W. Bush Administration—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to talk about his campaign to unseat Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D-PA). McCormick is calling on Lancaster City Council to rescind their recently approved Lancaster Trust Act which ends cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The puzzling decision comes as thousands of migrants unlawfully enter the country everyday under the Biden Administration's relaxed border policies. In a recent report conducted by Tern Bicycles, the state of diversity within the cycling industry has been brought to the forefront. The findings reveal a stark gender disparity, with men predominantly occupying the majority of roles in the cycling sector. Shockingly, women represent a mere 8% of bike workshop roles and 19% of customer-facing positions, reflecting a significant underrepresentation in these crucial areas of the industry. Delving deeper into the gender dynamics, the report notes that women fare slightly better in administrative roles, holding 40% of such positions. However, despite this presence, the progression to senior leadership roles remains limited for women within the cycling industry. This raises questions about the systemic barriers that may hinder the upward mobility of women in this field. Moreover, the report sheds light on the ethnic diversity gap in cycling participation. Among urban ethnic minority groups, a staggering 74% do not currently engage in cycling, despite 55% expressing a desire to start. This underscores a notable disparity between interest and actual participation, pointing to potential barriers that prevent certain communities from fully embracing cycling. In response to these findings, we turn to Adriana Atencio, the Executive Director of The Common Wheel in Lancaster City. As an expert in the field and a leader in an organization dedicated to promoting biking accessibility, Atencio brings a valuable perspective to the conversation. Her insights could provide a nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by women in the cycling industry, as well as shed light on initiatives aimed at addressing the ethnic diversity gap in cycling participation. The Tern Bicycles report serves as a call to action for the cycling industry to address these disparities head-on. Achieving gender and ethnic diversity within the sector not only fosters a more inclusive environment but also unlocks untapped potential for growth and innovation. With Adriana Atencio joining the discussion, there is an opportunity to explore practical solutions and strategies that can be implemented to create a more equitable and accessible future for cycling enthusiasts across diverse communities.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In a remarkable response to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Cherise Hamblin and her dedicated team at Patients R' Waiting orchestrated a dynamic initiative to bring vaccines directly to the community. As the vaccine became available, they wasted no time and initiated pop-up vaccine clinics in unconventional locations, including churches, parking lots, community centers, and even the Clipper Magazine baseball stadium in Lancaster. The success and positive reception of these pop-up vaccine opportunities inspired Dr. Hamblin and her colleagues to think beyond traditional healthcare outreach. This led to the creation of the Health Equity Music Festival, a groundbreaking event spanning six weeks. The festival serves as a unique platform to promote vaccination, emphasize the benefits of healthy living and eating, and connect attendees with an array of service providers to address their personal needs. Now in its third year, the Health Equity Music Festival has become a staple in Lancaster City. Dr. Hamblin and her team have seamlessly blended the realms of health advocacy and entertainment, using creative interaction and engagement to deliver crucial health messages to the community. The festival's innovative approach not only promotes vaccination but also educates attendees on the importance of incorporating healthy habits into their daily lives. The festival's diverse lineup includes musical performances, interactive health opportunities, food, and opportunities for attendees to connect with various service providers offering support in different aspects of their lives. By combining entertainment with essential health information, the Health Equity Music Festival has proven to be an effective and engaging method of reaching a wide audience. As the festival enters its third year, the impact of Dr. Cherise Hamblin and Patients R Waiting's initiative continues to resonate in Lancaster City, fostering a sense of community and collective well-being in the ongoing battle against Covid-19.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Most ten-year-old kids find interest in things like the Roadblocks app, Tik Tok, and tv shows. But a ten-year-old resident of Lancaster City had a different kind of interest: to make a positive difference within his community and abroad. Lucas Kreider and his mom, Lauren Kreider, created Peace Kids to the Rescue Art Show and Silent Auction, that they will host on Friday, Sept. 2 at Millersville University's Ware Center, 42 N Prince St. The 4th annual show will feature art donated by over thirty children between the ages of 6 and 18 and will include four artists from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Central Africa, who received donated art supplies to create pieces for the art show. All proceeds will be donated to Church World Services and Lancaster County Homeless Coalition. To date, they've raised over $10,000 for those two organizations and hope to raise more. Lauren said when Lucas was 6 years old during breakfast, he said: "Mom, I want to have an art show for children to raise money for people who don't have as much as I do." Today, Lucas and Lauren are keeping that dream alive and are looking forward to conducting their 4th annual Peace Kids to the Rescue Art Show and Silent Auction.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
