I'm back!! I share some of the stressors I've had and much of the stories I've been reading these past few weeks. These stories include (roughly in order of discussion): Consider Phlebas by Ian M. Banks, The Long Earth series by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter, House of Suns by Alistair Reynolds, and the webfiction Ar'Kendrithyst by Arcs. And I forgot to talk about A Half-Built Garden by Ruthanna Emrys... which is a shame because it was my favorite novel of the lot! Definitely have to get into it in the next episode.
In the best of all possible worlds, this podcast would always be on time...but we're not there yet, are we. You know what comes close, though? The Culture, the star-spanning utopia depicted in Iain M. Banks's novels such as Consider Phlebas and The Player of Games. In this episode, Philip and I take a dive into the possibilities of benevolent godlike AI, post-scarcity economies, stellar-level constructs and utopian societies, and ask...can we truly conceive of a better world? What, and who, is even REAL? Bailey finds out when she reads the new horror novel IMAGINARY FRIEND by The Perks of Being a Wallflower author Stephen Chbosky. Meanwhile, Toby travels across the galaxy following a shape-shifting secret agent in Ian M Banks' seminal sci-fi CONSIDER PHLEBAS. Plus, we hear how The To Read List is making things happen in Hollywood, what movies baby Maggie tolerates, and envision a delightful world where Carson Daly hosts a show about the ten hottest books on the NYT bestseller list.
We survived, and yet like all Culture protagonists we've been fundamentally changed by the experience. Can we return to the safety and normalcy of other sci-fi after this? Will we eventually succumb to ennui and ask to be frozen in stasis until Banks is reincarnated and starts writing again? Guess we'll have to do another culture book to find out. In the meantime, here's a discussion of what happens when you try to just war theory at a scale that precludes the idea of mere survival as an objective. We come to an end of the journey for the first of The Culture books. Fear not we shall return soon for The Player of Games.
A book so big we barely manage to cover even a piece of it in three episodes. Don't be deceived by the vaguely unsatisfying nature of the narrative on first reading, this book is a culture ship packed with philosophy. In part two our minds reel as we attempt to grasp the scale of the Culture and the space it inhabits. It's a big episode with a big body count! But finally we finish up in these goddamn tunnels!
A book so big we barely manage to cover even a piece of it in three episodes. Don't be deceived by the vaguely unsatisfying nature of the narrative on first reading, this book is a culture ship packed with philosophy. We start out, as the book does, with an attempt to steelbot the argument against the culture. We get to learn a lot more about Idirans, and trains, in a chapter that spends a lot of time setting up the finale!
The drone makes some jokes, the Idirans are mean, and Yalson has a big surprise!
The KFC ventures deep under Schar's World, while through Fal's musings we learn the history of the Culture.
The KFC on the CAT finally makes it to Schar's World and Horza's misspent youth catches up with him.
A madcap escape, the arsenal of the end of the universe, a plucky drone, and the immense drag of being a galactic warlord with a young dude hitting on you.
How much damage can a game do? We finally see the game up close and very personal, Horza and Kraiklyn settle their scores, and the scale and glory of a General Systems Vehicle is revealed.
Horza goes to a very bad place... some might say he's lucky to escape...
In the staggering vastness of the Vavatch Orbital Kraiklyn's Free Company try their hands at maritime salvage. But what is this Damage game Kraiklyn's really thinking about?
Things go as you might expect for Kraiklyn's Free Company in combat. And we finally get a look at the Culture on its own turf.
Horza, floating in deep space, is found, and fights for his life. Is this an allegory for patriarchal capitalism? And who is Yalson?
In this chapter we get to know the Idirans, big conversations are had, and Horza steps outside for a long walk!
In which we meet Horza, get our first glimpse of the culture, form views about the Gerontocracy of Sorpen, and become acquainted with Idirans. A short chapter, but a key one for getting this story on the road.
Welcome to the start of The Culture Books Club, a read-along exploration of Iain M. Banks Culture novels. In this episode some special guests give us a taste of things to come and we try and unpack the dizzying first few pages of the book that started it all; "Consider Phlebas". Special thanks to The War Nerd himself, Gary Brecher AKA John Dolan, and Mel Bicket of the Podmoot - Enteresting Tales from Tolkien podcast.
Poet Andrew Heaton joins us to wrap up our thoughts on Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks. Plus, the greatest zombie film in the world and totally metal T-shirts to show your support of Octavia Butler and other awesome authors.
Episode 4 is the first Bookstabber double feature! Gene and Willow discuss Gene's favorite space opera, Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks, and then talk about When We Were Vikings by Andrew David MacDonald, a YA-ish novel with an unusual narrator. As usual Willow questions Gene's taste and his mental state.

In the second half of our discussion of "Consider Phlebas" by Iain M. Banks, Jared makes plans to build his own Culture warship, Erin is displeased by one character's ending, Adam thinks up some sips that the others missed, Tony name drops his favorite SF authors, and everyone hopes our author treated female characters better in his later years. -----Music: "Fuzzball Parade" by Kevin MacLeod - incompetech.com
In the inaugural episode of Drunk Queer Bitches Talk Books, we use January's Sci Fi Week as a perfect excuse to cover 'Consider Phlebas' by Iain M. Banks. Join us, as Adam revels in the "uniform ridiculousness" of the Damage players, Erin find lesbian subtext that even the male gays can see, Tony defends his hard-earned nerd cred, and Jared reminds everyone that he controls the editing. Also, we all have stern words for our book's main character. -----Music: "Fuzzball Parade" by Kevin MacLeod - incompetech.com
