Today is a book review and the first volume of Ted Naifeh's gothy teen book 'Courtney Crumrin' is up! If you think having a new friend eaten by a goblin or babysitting a changeling that's sitting in for a baby sound like fun, then this episode is for you.
Gwen and Derek are back with another Previews episode. And since February is Super Bowl time, in the super spirit of that super day they present a super long show. That's right, there were so many titles that the two wanted to highlight this month, that this episode inadvertently turned into (we think) the longest Previews show ever recorded on The Comics Alternative. History in the making, or an annoyingly long experience? You decide. Among the many comic books and graphic novels that Gwen and Derek highlight are: Dark Horse Comics - Xerxes: The Fall of the House of Darius and the Rise of Alexander #1, Black Hammer: Age of Doom #1, A Study in Emerald, Hellboy: The Complete Short Stories, Vol. 1, Resident Alien: An Alien in New York #1, Space Boy, and Michael Chabon's The Escapist: Pulse-Pounding Thrills DC/Vertigo - Action Comics #1000, Super Hero Girls: Out of the Bottle, Supergirl: Being Super, and Astro City #52 IDW Publishing - Sonic the Hedgehog #1-4, Eight Million Ways to Die, Black Crown Quarterly #3, Antar #1, Alack Sinner: The Age of Disenchantment, Jerome K. Jerome Bloche, Vol. 2: The Paper People, and Cloud Hotel Image Comics - Analog #1, Skyward #1, Crossroad Blues: A Nick Travers Graphic Novel, Pervert, and Clover Honey: Special Edition Aardvark-Vanaheim - Love and Aardvarks #1 Abrams ComicArts - The Bridge: How the Roeblings Connected Brooklyn to New York and The Best We Could Do Action Lab Entertainment - The Ghost, The Owl Aftershock Comics - Her Infernal Descent #1 Alternative Comics - Comics for Choice: Illustrated Abortion Stories, History and Politics Arsenal Pulp Press - Forward Big Planet/Retrofit Comics - Big Planet Comics Red Bloomsbury Publishing - What to Do When I'm Gone: A Mother's Wisdom to Her Daughter BOOM! Recorded at the FACTS in October of 2017, this is an hour-long interview with famed writer/artist Ted Naifeh. I was joined by my good friend, scholar and Naifeh enthusiast Eva. Ted is the author of Courtney Crumrin, Night’s Dominion, Gloom Cookie and Heroines. Come back soon for the final FACTS foray of 2017 as we officially welcome 2018 and start our own nerd academic year.
Eva is back and she’s kicking ass and taking names. I’m always thrilled to find comics that focus on female characters, so this week’s interview with Courtney Crumrin creator Ted Naifeh was a real pleasure! He’s the creator of Princess Ugg, a fun new ongoing series from Oni Press. The second issue will hit stores this Wednesday, so be sure to pick it up and issue #1! We discuss how the project came to be as well as how this series relates to real life, and even how great it is to have books paying attention to women characters! I relate a lot to this title, and you should check it out to see if you do as well! You won’t want to miss what Mr. Naifeh has to say, so be sure to tune in! Things get spooky this week, though it has less to do with The Night Things and more to do with the tales told by this week’s guest, sketch comedy writer Kerry McGuire. Actually, not “spooky” so much as dark. We discuss Nicole’s pick, the first Courtney Crumrin series from Oni Press. The book inspires a little bit of talk about childhood alienation and a lot of talk about pupils. Eye pupils. Newly colored versions of Courtney Crumrin & The Night Things #1-4 can be found on Comixology and on Amazon. Kerry McGuire is a writer for the sketch comedy team Charlemagne, who perform in New York City as part of Maude Night at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. There’s a lot of business to cover in this episode! Up first: Nicole makes her first pick! We’ll be reading Courtney Crumrin & The Night Things #1-4 by Ted Naifeh, from Oni Press. Download it from Comixology where the first issue is available for free! Next, Matt and Brett reveal the top secret show they’ve been working on for the past few months: SPIDER-MAN 4! On Thursday, August 2nd, the podcasts Left Handed Radio and Matt & Brett Love Comics present a special one-time-only performance of the darkest, sexiest, best movie you’ll never see. Spider-Man 4 is happening at 7:30 PM on Thursday, August 2nd, at UCB Theatre East in New York City. Reserve your tickets now!
