Dr. Zullo and Laura discuss some of the first-ever Superman comics; Superman's early focus on fighting social inequities vs. super villains; how creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster came to dream up the famous superhero; Brad Ricca's entertaining and exhaustive literary biography Super Boys; legal battles surrounding the rights to Superman; and today's expanded Superman universe, including a look at Supergirl: Being Super by Mariko Tamaki and Joelle Jones. In this episode we discuss Supergirl Season 4, Episode 13, “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?”. We talk about The Elite and living in life’s grey areas. We all agree Lena should be queer. We see Ben Lockwood and his friends oozing crazy and toxic masculinity and evidently that leads to getting appointed to the president’s cabinet. Sounds like art imitating life. We have strong feelings regarding Supergirl and Alex’s budding friendship. Erin’s cat, Ollie, is back to weigh in on another episode! The Gilmore Girls gets a shout out. We also talk about our fears and eyeballs. Gwen and Derek are back with another Previews episode. And since February is Super Bowl time, in the super spirit of that super day they present a super long show. We try a Pineapple Rum from Plantation this week. I learned that this isn't just rum flavored with Pineapple, but that pineapple is actually used in the distilling process instead of cane sugar. Super fascinating, you should look into it. Also, Jeigh gives talks about Supergirl: Being Super #3, Adrian talks about Iron Fist and his history of the Marvel/Netflix shows, and they both talk about a podcast called S-Town.
Something old (the retro vibe of Wonder Woman '77 Meets the Bionic Woman #1), something new (the youthful protagonists of Nova #1 and Supergirl: Being Super #1), something borrowed (Murd's copy of Scooby-Doo Team-Up #23), and something blue (Blue Rider, the Led Zeppelin wannabes seen in Rockstars #1): a perfect marriage of elements for a great Off the Racks episode! Reviews: Hulk Vol 4 #1, Supergirl: Being Super #1 Jimmy is joined in studio again by the Jon-uary co-host, Jon Hoche! They wish you a happy new year and gush over the Wonder Woman trailers. Jimmy also laments how a friend will try to keep talking about an episode of a show they both watch even when Jimmy says he hasn't seen the one from the previous night yet! The nerve! News includes: Geoff Johns will write some Watchmen comics, Grant Morrison's Multiversity kind of returns, Rob Liefeld has sold the film options to more of his comic endeavors and The Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln promises more levity when the show returns. This week James and Nick talk about Marvel's Netflix shows, flip through Previews, and more! It's our longest description yet. Correction: Bruce Lee was not created by comic creators, he was the son of Lee Hoi-Chun and Grace Ho. Nick was too eager to jump into his main point to recognize this mistake. With Seth out sick, Michael invited his childhood friend Ronald P. Tramp to the studio to fill in. What followed were a lot of laughs, some inappropriate sound effects, a few near-fistfights, and a shocking revelation even Michael didn't know about his origin that we can only refer to as "Crisis on County Road 10." Combine that with breaking news about an insane DNA-thieving lawsuit involving the comic industry's greatest heel, the Perfidious Perlmutter, and you have all the makings of a classic episode of Ka-Pow: The Pop-Cultured Podcast.Length - 01:22:47Language - PG-13. This starts with probably too much talk about a toilet. That leads, naturally of course, into the building of our new Back Issue boxes. This is the last week we’ll bring up our “C” logo t-shirt Kickstarter. Barnes & Noble is having a rough go of book-selling and that leads us to other retailers and their reasons for a perceived economic downturn. Their reasons surprise us. Clowns! DC sales are up. Marvel’s are down. We’re looking forward to: Supergirl: Being Super, Green Valley, Moonshine, Shade the Changing Girl, Wonder Woman: The True Amazon. Brian Azzaerllo is joining us for Local Comic Shop Day!
