In Slaves and Highlanders: Silenced Histories of Scotland and the Caribbean (Edinburgh University Press, 2021), Dr. David Alston shows how Scots were involved in every stage of the slave trade: from captaining slaving ships to auctioning captured Africans in the colonies and hunting down those who escaped from bondage. This book focuses on the Scottish Highlanders who engaged in or benefitted from these crimes against humanity in the Caribbean Islands and Guyana, some reluctantly but many with enthusiasm and without remorse. Their voices are clearly heard in the archives, while in the same sources their victims' stories are silenced – reduced to numbers and listed as property. Dr. Alston gives voice not only to these Scots, but to enslaved Africans and their descendants – to those who reclaimed their freedom, to free women of colour, to the Black Caribs of St Vincent, to house servants, and to children of mixed race who found themselves in the increasingly racist society of Britain in the mid-1800s. The book pays special attention to the new colonies of the southern Caribbean, including Grenada and Guyana, and to Suriname in the years to 1863. As Scots recover and grapple with their past, this vital history lays bare the enormous wealth generated in the Highlands by slavery and emancipation compensation schemes. This legacy, entwined with so many of our contemporary institutions, must be reckoned with. This book therefore contributes to the debate on reparation by reappraising the idea of Scots complicity in the slave trade. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In Part 2, farmer's son Col Gordon explored the ways in which the colonisation of Highland Scotland destroyed a rich pre-colonial culture and relationship to the land. But in Part 3, he learns that the story of Scotland as the victim of colonial practices is just one part of a much bigger narrative. The Highlands is one of the least racially diverse parts of the UK, and it would be easy to think of the area as far removed from the UK's grim colonial history – a place where racial justice and reparations have no direct relevance. But, as Col discovers, this would be far from the truth. Col traces the connections – some indirect, others very concrete – between the rural landscape he grew up in and global patterns of displacement, exploitation and enslavement. To dig deeper, he speaks with Josina Calliste, co-founder of Land in Our Names (LION) – a Black-led, grassroots collective committed to reparations in Britain by connecting land and climate justice with racial justice – and explores what it means to be a person of colour in rural Scotland today. In 1994, a group of activists tried to blow up a statue on Ben Bhraggie, overlooking the town of Golspie in Sutherland. In November 2011, some more activists tried to bring it down with chains. Neither attempt was successful, but each represented the deep rooted hurt that highland communities feel due to the brutality of the Highland Clearances. Last week I examined the Clearance story and picked apart the misconceptions, and discovered what the age of Clearance was really about. But this week I delve deeper, discovering how the British Empire and its horrific trade in slaves has connections to the Clearances, how our culture was made illegal by that same Empire, and how those ideologies may still exist today - forcing us perhaps into a new era of Clearance.Interviews in this episode:Dr Nicola Martin, historian from the University of the Highlands and Islands, specialising on British imperialism and highland culture.Dr Domhnall Uilleam Stiubhart, senior lecturer at Sabhal Mór Ostaig at the University of the Highland and Islands about Gaelic culture and highland history.Dr David Alston, historian and author with a research interest in highland history and Scotland's involvement in the slave trade.Dr Iain MacKinnon, historian and researcher for the centre of governance and land reform at Coventry UniversityMeg Bishop, National Secretary for Living Rent, Scotland's tenants unionAndy Whightman, Green MSP for Lothian and land reform activistRaoul Curtis-Machin, Operations Manager at Culloden Battlefield See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In 1746, thousands of Jacobite soldiers were killed during a battle against the British at Culloden. One hundred years later, the clans are virtually gone, towns and villages have disappeared, and the highlands are owned by a handful of monied gentry. Today, only a pitiful few people own the millions of acres of land in Scotland, so what happened, and why? In the first of this two-part special, let's examine the Highland Clearances to find out the history of this extremely emotive part of Scottish history, what it means, and who, if anyone, is to blame.Interviews with:Dr Nicola Martin, historian from the University of the Highlands and Islands, specialising on British imperialism and highland culture.Dr Jim Hunter, historian from the University of the Highlands and Islands, and author of fourteen books on highland history and clearance.Dr Domhnall Uilleam Stiubhart, senior lecturer at Sabhal Mór Ostaig at the University of the Highland and Islands about Gaelic culture and highland history.Dr David Alston, historian and author with a research interest in highland history and Scotland's involvement in the slave trade.Dr Iain MacKinnon, historian and researcher for the centre of governance and land reform at Coventry University See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Huddle editor Mark Leger has chatted with many business leaders on “Home Office” bullish about their views to safely open up the economy as the Covid-19 caseloads have dropped across the region.   On our first podcast, Marcel LeBrun and David Alston presented a plan of their own, a week before New Brunswick rolled out the official one. Then we talked to business leader and columnist Don Mills, who didn't want to see Nova Scotia left behind and was an early advocate for the “Atlantic Bubble.”   This week Mark chats with Halifax Chamber CEO Patrick Sullivan, who says our cities are hurting, particularly the downtown cores where restrictions need to loosened so the workers can repopulate the largely empty office buildings and eat at area restaurants again.

On today’s episode, there is celebration in heaven over the just destruction of Babylon, the great prostitute. By contrast, the marriage supper of the Lamb is announced, and His bride is dressed in fine linen, representing the righteous acts of the saints. The beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, and the false prophet are all thrown into the lake that burns with sulfur. Satan is bound in the abyss for a thousand years, then released in order to deceive the nations and gather them for battle against the saints, but they, too, are handily defeated. After the great white throne judgment, John sees the New Jerusalem, a city of glorious prosperity and security, illumined by the glory of God.:::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by Eric Williamson.facebook.com/commuterbibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org:::Thanks to the members of our Patreon team for support in 2019: Austin Womble, Beth Salesky, Bobby and Julia Brown, Brooke Ann, Clint Walters, Daniel Mechtly, David Alston, Derik Duley, DR Woods, Eric Williamson, Gary and Rachel Atwell, Hayden Wickland, J. Introducing Steven Fisher Steven Fisher's LinkedIn profile calls him a creative leader, a seasoned entrepreneur, a sci-fi filmmaker, a soon to be published author, a budding craft beer maker, a slow runner, and a fast eater. With an introduction like that, you know there is a ton we could have spoken to Steven about. To save time, Greg and Dave talked to him about his upcoming book, “The Startup Equation” and his experience making his crowd funded sci-fi fan fiction flick, “Browncoats: Redemption”. Steven brought up an important statistic that he discovered from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, which is that one in six people on this planet will be entrepreneurs of some fashion by the end of the decade. With over six billion people on Earth, that means there could be over a billion entrepreneurs by 2020. Where can all of these go-getters discover their keys to success? One way is to follow the path beaten down by the successful business people before them. This was the inspiration behind Steven's new book, which is co-authored by his wife, Ja-Nae Duane.  Steven noticed that most books about startups were exclusively about the tech space. Though this space is included in the book, he wanted to speak to people regardless if they were planning to start the next earth-shattering technology or the next tasty food truck in Houston. He found the common elements that seemed to be part of a larger equation from interviewing entrepreneurs from all over the world, in many different types of businesses, including our very own David Alston from episode two. At a very basic level, three things are important for any startup: the entrepreneur, the team built around him or her, and funding. While there is a number of parts to the startup equation, for which you will need to buy the book, Steven points out three x-factors which are passion, determination, and drive. Entrepreneurs who exemplify those x-factors, will find it difficult to fail over the long haul. In 2008, Steven used his own passion, determination, and drive to develop a new model for crowd funded fan fiction.  Steven is a fan of the ill-fated Fox sci-fi series, Firefly, which was cancelled during its first season, but developed a massive cult following. The series had such a cult following that there was also a feature film titled, Serenity. However, after Serenity, Firefly was over and left its fans starving for more content. Steven couldn't come close to paying the licensing fees that would have been required to re-launch the series, but he was inspired by what he was seeing in fan films, so he got to work in starting the process of making “Browncoats”. A friend of his wrote the script and they made a group on Facebook, from which 80 people came from numerous states for the first table read. Steven knew he was on to something, but did something very interesting to fund the film. He set up a non-profit which allowed the film to be made without licensing. He then chose five charities that were supported or created by the original cast and crew of Firefly, to receive any profits from the film. This engaged both the fans of the series and the former members from Firefly. In the end, Steven and his crew were able to raise $150,000 for charity and college scholarships, in the time before Kickstarter and Indiegogo. What a novel model for fan filmmaking that created content for the fans and by the fans while touching the lives of others.   In this episode We hear the tales from Steven interviewing entrepreneurs from around the world for his new book including Jonathan Fields from the Good Life Project. We become browncoats (Firefly fans) and get inspired by the fan film story. Greg is empowered by the idea of building something people want and those people will embrace and support you. Dave is energized by the statistic that one in six people will one day be an entrepreneur and asks Steven a question inspired by Jonathan Fields.     Links  Steven's Twitter Learn more about your ad choices.
