March 3rd: Steven Fisher and Melissa Gregory's Bodies Found (1983) Not all cases can be wrapped up with a bow and confidence that justice has been served. On March 3rd 1983 the bodies of a young man and young woman were found on a Ranch in Iowa. Though investigators were pretty confident they knew who killed the pair and why, the case lacks answers and, above all, justice for those who were killed. https://cold-justice-franchise.fandom.com/wiki/Copper_Dollar_Ranch, https://iowacoldcases.org/case-summaries/melisa-gregory-and-steven-fisher/, https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/crime-and-courts/2017/02/21/theresa-supino-cold-justice-copper-dollar-ranch/98193736/, https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/crime-and-courts/2014/03/04/arrest-made-in-newton-cold-case/6002029/, https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2962426/Mother-57-charged-grisly-Iowa-hammer-claw-murders-husband-girlfriend-31-YEARS-not-guilty.html, https://who13.com/news/former-owner-testifies-about-drug-dealing-at-copper-dollar-ranch/, https://www.cbsnews.com/news/woman-arrested-in-1983-iowa-horse-ranch-double-murder/, https://www.kcci.com/article/authorities-announce-arrest-in-31-year-old-double-homicide/6889794 Learn more about your ad choices. Randy Klein is a multi-award-winning composer, pianist, record producer, author and music educator. He is the composer of For My People, a song cycle featuring the poetry of American author, Margaret Walker. For My People was featured at the Furious Flower Poetry Festival at James Madison University and the University of Kansas. The music premiere of the renowned poem by Margaret Walker ‘For My People' was April 2, 2011 at the Forbes Center for the Arts, James Madison University, VA. His compositions, Facing It and Dear John, Dear Coltrane, based on the poetry of Yusef Komunyakaa and Michael Harper premiered at the 2014 Furious Flower Poetry Conference featuring the combined James Madison University and Morgan State Chorales. His musical, Black Swan Blues, in collaboration with Joan Ross Sorkin, bookwriter and lyricist, inspired by the ballet “Swan Lake,”. Black Swan Blues explores white privilege and racism in America in the South in the early 1960's. Set in New Orleans, a rich, idealistic journalist and a poor, vulnerable blues singer's true love is challenged when secrets from their tangled past involving race, murder and the Ku Klux Klan are revealed. Only through the magic of voodoo do they find eternal love. The score is timeless and contemporary evoking the period.

Matthew Fisher always felt like an outsider. He struggled to make friends and was overcome by mood swings. By age 13, he turned to drugs and alcohol to cope. His father, Steven, watched from the sidelines, desperately trying to help his son. This is the story of how a father and son found recovery and healed their rocky relationship. Dr. Steven Fisher was a well-respected physician who practiced medicine in New Salem. On this date in 1928, Fisher's friends and neighbors were shocked to learn he was wanted for murder. The sheriff arrived in New Salem to arrest Fisher, but the good doctor had disappeared.
Today we talk to friend of the pod, Steven Fisher, about the crimes he was willing to discuss. We also talk with him some about the topic for the episode. We've got crime big and small and it's all crammed into as small a package as I could get it into. Hope you like it. On March 3, 1983, two bodies were found near the Copper Dollar Ranch in Iowa. 20-year-old Steven Fisher and 17-year-old Melissa Gregory, both employees at the ranch, were found beaten to death. Police had their suspicions but it took them 31 years before they arrested Steven's wife Terri Fisher for both murders. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the murders of Steven and Melissa at the Copper Dollar Ranch. The rumor around the ranch was that Steven and Melissa had been having an affair. Steven separated from his wife Terri just weeks before the murders. You can see why police may have thought she had a motive for murder. But, it took them 31 years to arrest and charge Terri with the murders. The authorities thought the evidence they needed to convict her but the jury didn't see it that way. #031. How does a choir director react when a stranger tells him he has blood on his hands? Or when a post to his choir's facebook page asks, "Where's the remorse?" Dr. Adam Burdick honesty and poignantly answers these questions and much more. Part 6 of Steve's conversation with Adam is the culminating episode of a podcast journey to know Adam, and the widely known story of his Skagit Valley Chorale's March 10th rehearsal that resulted in almost all of the attendees becoming infected by the corona virus - including Adam and his wife. Two of Adam's choristers succumbed to complications from Covid-19. Adam lets us know how Skagit is making music now, and gives his firm advice to other choirs that are contemplating making music in the same room. A video version of this episode can be found on Fisher Mann Podcasts' Youtube channel. It's a powerfully intense episode, but not without its lighter moments, including fun Ben Folds and Enya tidbits around the topic of virtual choir options. Visit these SHOW NOTES for links related to this episode. You can also visit coronachoir.org for more resources and an opportunity to tour South Africa all expenses paid.
#030. Part 5 of Steve's conversation starts out with Steve asking Adam a question he's always wanted to ask of someone who is trans/gender fluid. Steve also reveals a recent encounter he had when a person of color in an overwhelmingly white neighborhood noticed Steve notice his presence. The conversation winds its way to why the brains of lonely locusts shrink and the insight they offer us during the pandemic, which then leads to Adam discussing his reason for wearing eyeliner on Zoom chorus rehearsals. Don't miss tomorrow's video podcast for the final part of Steve and Adam's 6-part conversation. It can be found on Fisher Mann Podcasts Youtube channel. It will focus on Adam's March 10th choir rehearsal that resulted in almost all of the attendees getting corona - including him and his wife. Two of Adam's choristers passed away from complications of the disease. Visit the SHOW NOTES for links related to this episode. You can also visit coronachoir.org for more choral goodies.
#028. Never estimate the power of a smile. Today is Part 3 of Steve's conversation with Skagit Valley Chorale artistic director and conductor Dr. Adam Burdick. What is the power of smile? Adam knows. And you should too - for the next time you encounter someone who is different, and they catch you looking. Visit the SHOW NOTES for links related to this episode. You can also visit coronachoir.org for more choral goodies.
#027. Steve's conversation with Skagit Valley Chorale artistic director and conductor Dr. Adam Burdick continues. The Chorale, based in Mt. Vernon Washington, made international headlines when its March 10th rehearsal resulted in most of the attendees getting sick - including Adam and his wife. Sadly, two Singers passed away. Today's dialogue includes Adam talking more about his journey of gender fluidity, which began at age 11. Him agreeing to have a conversation with Steve on Zoom represented another step in this journey - appearing gender fluid in a media setting. Part 6 of Adam and Steve's conversation will be a video podcast and focus on the now infamous March rehearsal. But you are strongly encouraged to listen to the first five parts of the conversation in audio only as well. Gender is of course important to Adam, like for all of us. It is, like his experience last March, a part of Adam's story. But they do not define him either. Visit the SHOW NOTES for links related to this episode. You can also visit coronachoir.org for more choral goodies.
#024. Is your choir being told you're not allowed to sing? Are athletic teams at your school or in your area being allowed to do things that your choir isn't? Like...meet? Or not adhere to social distancing and masks. Then this episode is for you! High School Choir Director Brett joins us again to talk about his ongoing journey with his administration to get permission to sing beyond chanting. Wanna go to South Africa with Commonwealth Youthchoirs in 2022 - ALL EXPENSES PAID? To be entered to win, sign up for the CORONA CHOIR email list at coronachoir.org. #018. Room ventilation and in person choral singing. It's not easy to understand the science, let alone how that applies to our own choral spaces. If you have questions about it, this episode is a must. Wanna travel with host Steve Fisher and Commonwealth Youthchoirs to South Africa in 2021 - ALL EXPENSES PAID? Sign up for the Corona Choir email list at coronachoir.org. Because SOMEBODY is going to South Africa! You'll find this episode's show notes at coronachoir.org as well.
#012. Recently, The New York Times declared the U.S. college campus as the new covid hot spot. When Texas Christian University cancels its opening football game, you know it's serious. To-date, there have been approximately 88,000 college covid cases across America. Only 27% of colleges tested students when they first arrived on campus. Because it's expensive - as much as $100 per test - it's no surprise that there is a strong correlation between the size of the university's endowment and the amount of testing. Spend some time with Dr. Elizabeth Cassidy Parker of Temple University's Esther Boyer College of Music where she is an Associate Professor in Music Education to hear how Temple's coping. Her message is a hopeful one! Today's featured choral music is "No Time," arranged by Susan Brumfield, as sung by Pennsylvania Girlchoir under the direction of Dr. Parker. Wanna travel with Steve Fisher, Dr. Parker and Commonwealth Youthchoirs to South Africa in 2021 - ALL EXPENSES PAID? Sign up for the Corona Choir email list at coronachoir.org. Because SOMEBODY is going to South Africa! You'll find this episode's show notes at coronachoir.org as well.
#013. Today we're talking to Kym Scott, the inventor of Sing-Safe masks. Kym has designed two masks, what she calls the Performer's Mask to accommodate and protect the Singer while performing, and the Teacher's mask that eliminates the muffled speech challenges when lecturing associated with regular cloth. Kym is uniquely qualified for this unexpected entrepreneurial adventure in several ways. She is the Director of Choral Activities at West Virginia University. She developed another major qualification for the job as a child in Queensland Australia, as you're about to hear. Talk about zero to singer masks. What wondrous times these are indeed! We're all finding ourselves doing things we couldn't have imagined six months ago. Wanna travel with Steve Fisher and Commonwealth Youthchoirs to South Africa in 2021 - ALL EXPENSES PAID? Sign up for the Corona Choir email list at coronachoir.org. Because SOMEBODY is going to South Africa! You'll find this episode's show notes at coronachoir.org as well.
#014. Charles Dickens said, "At the end of your life, you will not regret the things you did do, but the things you did not do. The world is your home. Go forth." This resonates with choirs folks and our tradition of touring. With the pandemic, our tours for the spring and summer were cancelled. And like everything else, we're wondering when choirs can tour again. Today, we head out on a virtual tour to an extraordinary city at the very tip of South America... Punta Arenas, Chile. The warmth of the Chilean people, their love of music, and their national beverage of choice - the pisco sour - make it an amazing country to visit! Today listeners spend time with the charming Jorge Sharp, an engineer by day and a choir director by night. Chile is still really struggling with the pandemic. One of the ways many Chileans cope is through their great tradition of making music in the home with family members. Illustrating that point so poignantly is what happens spontaneously during host Steve Fisher's conversation with Jorge. Wanna travel with Steve and Commonwealth Youthchoirs to South Africa in 2021 - ALL EXPENSES PAID? Sign up for the Corona Choir email list at coronachoir.org. Because SOMEBODY is going to South Africa! You'll find this episode's show notes at coronachoir.org as well.
#016. Jenny Mazzola is a Garden State Girlchoir choir mom. And she is a chorister in her own right as a member of the fledgling Sparrow Women's Chorale. Jenny has been singing in choirs since she was the age of her own daughters, both of whom are serious choristers. Grace and Megan come by their love of choral music honestly! Grace, a senior at Pitman High School, has already decided she wants to be a choir director. Not a solo performer who is going to major in music education as a "back up." Grace is going into choral music, because choral music is in Grace. Megan is in her own right an extraordinary young woman and chorister. Today, Friday, is NOT "Let the Choir Kid Talk." It's let the Choir PARENT talk. We'll discover what the conversation is at home about whether or not to let choristers sing in person outside, or inside, when the weather turns cold. These are tough questions for choir parents. One thing is certain. Without Choir Parents, there would no children's choirs. If there weren't children's choirs, there'd be no university choral programs, no adult choirs, and no audience members at choral concerts. So today's episode is dedicated to Jenny and all choir parents, who are normally the unsung heroes of children's choirs. But not today! Introducing Steven Fisher Steven Fisher's LinkedIn profile calls him a creative leader, a seasoned entrepreneur, a sci-fi filmmaker, a soon to be published author, a budding craft beer maker, a slow runner, and a fast eater. With an introduction like that, you know there is a ton we could have spoken to Steven about. To save time, Greg and Dave talked to him about his upcoming book, “The Startup Equation” and his experience making his crowd funded sci-fi fan fiction flick, “Browncoats: Redemption”. Steven brought up an important statistic that he discovered from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, which is that one in six people on this planet will be entrepreneurs of some fashion by the end of the decade. With over six billion people on Earth, that means there could be over a billion entrepreneurs by 2020. Where can all of these go-getters discover their keys to success? One way is to follow the path beaten down by the successful business people before them. This was the inspiration behind Steven's new book, which is co-authored by his wife, Ja-Nae Duane. Steven noticed that most books about startups were exclusively about the tech space. Though this space is included in the book, he wanted to speak to people regardless if they were planning to start the next earth-shattering technology or the next tasty food truck in Houston. He found the common elements that seemed to be part of a larger equation from interviewing entrepreneurs from all over the world, in many different types of businesses, including our very own David Alston from episode two. At a very basic level, three things are important for any startup: the entrepreneur, the team built around him or her, and funding. While there is a number of parts to the startup equation, for which you will need to buy the book, Steven points out three x-factors which are passion, determination, and drive. Entrepreneurs who exemplify those x-factors, will find it difficult to fail over the long haul. In 2008, Steven used his own passion, determination, and drive to develop a new model for crowd funded fan fiction. Steven is a fan of the ill-fated Fox sci-fi series, Firefly, which was cancelled during its first season, but developed a massive cult following. The series had such a cult following that there was also a feature film titled, Serenity. However, after Serenity, Firefly was over and left its fans starving for more content. Steven couldn't come close to paying the licensing fees that would have been required to re-launch the series, but he was inspired by what he was seeing in fan films, so he got to work in starting the process of making “Browncoats”. A friend of his wrote the script and they made a group on Facebook, from which 80 people came from numerous states for the first table read. Steven knew he was on to something, but did something very interesting to fund the film. He set up a non-profit which allowed the film to be made without licensing. He then chose five charities that were supported or created by the original cast and crew of Firefly, to receive any profits from the film. This engaged both the fans of the series and the former members from Firefly. In the end, Steven and his crew were able to raise $150,000 for charity and college scholarships, in the time before Kickstarter and Indiegogo. What a novel model for fan filmmaking that created content for the fans and by the fans while touching the lives of others. In this episode We hear the tales from Steven interviewing entrepreneurs from around the world for his new book including Jonathan Fields from the Good Life Project. We become browncoats (Firefly fans) and get inspired by the fan film story. Greg is empowered by the idea of building something people want and those people will embrace and support you. Dave is energized by the statistic that one in six people will one day be an entrepreneur and asks Steven a question inspired by Jonathan Fields.
